Battery Powered USB Hub

I haven't tested it yet. Reading through the forums, I found out that the x7500/Advantage may not be able to power some external attachments without a powered USB Hub. I don't care to carry around a powered hub with a bulky power plug so I started looking around and found this...a battery powered 4 port USB hub. Perfect companion to the x7500/Advantage if you use external devices that require more power than the x7500/Advantage can provide.

I am not sure that simply using a self powered usb hub all USB-Host problem connection are solved.
In fact I already tried it connected to a normal powered usb hub (with external power supply) and the result has been the same: no USB device connection detected by my Advantage.
I tried with USB Flash drive (2 and 4 GB), USB keyboard and USB optical mouse.
The result always the same: no detection of USB device.

USB 1Gb flash works fine here.
Mouse didnt work, nor keyboard. Not sure on printers etc.
Does anyone have a list of what "should" work?

- USB 1.1 host (supports USB low power): Plug USB accessories into the USB standard A female port. The host can support these accessories:

3. USB keyboard
4. USB mouse
- VGA output: Connect the Advantage to output the screen contents to a projector or PC monitor
- TV output – S-video: Connect the Advantage to output the screen contents to a TV through the S-video interface
- TV output – Composite Video: Connect the Advantage to output the screen contents to a TV through the composite video interface (AV cable)

OTA ICS: USB Disk mount?

when looking at the storage control panel, it lists internal, sdcard-ext, and then "/mnt/usbdisk_1.1.1" and says "insert an [sic] USB disk for mounting".
so if i were to come up with some sort of adapter, could i plug a thumb drive into my phone's micro usb port to move files between the phone and the thumb drive? i can think of plenty of times that would be useful!

Tried. OTG cable works with Samsung galaxy S2 devices (Skyrocket using either SKY ICS or rooted OTA) but haven't got it to work on our Droids...(Bionic ICS leak, RAZR ICS OTA, Droid 4 ICS OTA...all rooted).
But if someone can prove me wrong I'd be happy to "eat my words" ...

OTG works, BUT only in a very cumbersome way, since external power is needed.
A powered USB hub does not suffice, since it only powers the slave devices, not the host (= phone). The phone must be in charge-mode, which requires a Y-cable.
You need:
- an OTG adapter
- a USB hub with mini-USB in
- a USB Y cable with 2 normal USB plugs and one mini-USB out
Then
1. Connect the OTG adapter to your phone's micro-USB input
2. Connect the 'middle' USB plug of the USB Y cable into the OTG adapter
3. Connect the 'outer' USB plug of the USB Y cable to a charger (can be a portable battery as well)
4. Connect the mini-USB plug of the USB Y cable to the hub output
5. Connect any device you want to use to the USB hub

Edit: I verified it for Droid 4 last week, but didn't take my own picture yet. Works with ICS .215 leak, no 3rd party apps (like 'StickMount') seem to be needed.
Edit2: According to some other posts in this forums (search for 'OTG') it will only work for FAT32 formatted drives. Didn't check this in detail but my drive was already FAT32. Also I found it did not work for my cheap wireless keyboard's USB dongle, but connecting a wired keyboard worked fine.

[Q] OTG with USB hub instead of Y cable?

Hi friends,
I want to attach to my touchpad memory card reader and external hard drive.
I wonder if it will be possible instead of buying Y cable and connect it to the OTG, to use my existing USB hub and connect to him the devices and the external battery bank.
Will it work?

im assuming youre talking about doing this in android 4.0.x +. if so then yes you should be able to connect an externally powered usb hub to the OTG cable and connect more than one device at a time.

I have normal usb hub which I will connect him the power with usb battery bank device.

Yes. You need to give power to the periphal usb devices. I tried the same yesterday, without problems.

I have a powered Belkin USB hub (this one: http://www.belkin.com/us/F4U040-Belkin/p/P-F4U040), coupled with an OTG cable which I know work together, as my Kindle Fire recognizes all USB devices through this setup (Keyboard, Mouse, Flash Drive etc).
I was surprised to find that my HP touchpad does not recognize any devices connected to this hub.
I did some diagnostics with USB Device Utility, and the touchpad recognizes my USB OTG cable, as it shows as a 'Qualcomm On-Chip EHCI Host Controller'.
The touchpad simply does not see anything plugged into the hub, be it a keyboard, mouse or flash drive.
Please help me here, guys!

Are you sure that's powered? The picture doesn't show any DC connectors. Is it powered by something like a mini USB to USB cable on the back? If so, that might not be enough to power the device and the peripherals attached to the ports.

The belkin does have an external dc power supply and is not powered via usb

I think you need a Y cable even with a powered hub as its purpose is to inject power back into the OTG chip in the Touchpad.

MHL to VGA

Are there MHL to VGA adapters available that are know to work with the 4x?
Or is MHL standardized enough that i can pick any MHL to VGA without any worrying about working?
I know HDMI is usually better but my HMD (tac eye) takes only VGA or SVideo (though SVideo quality really suxx, its only on for NV not for data).
Also I see some MHL to VGA adapters have a secondary USB port, can this be used only as client or could I somehow connect a pointing device to my phone?

If I were you i would take MHL to HDMI cable and then HDMI to VGA. Reason is simple. Sometime you may want to connect your phone to new TV so you will need HDMI as it is standard port.
Secondary USB port is microUSB and it is used to charge phone while conected to TV (at least thats how it works with MHL to HDMI cable).

Well, for me this would than look like: MHL-HDMI adapter connected to a HDMI-VGA adapter connected to VGA-"Proprietary HMD Port" thats in used space and weight more for the adapters than for the phone and HMD. As i intent to wear this on my body thats rather not cool. Also the HDMI-VGA adapter will want some juice what will be an additional drain on my batteries.
The "VGA-"Proprietary HMD Port" is passive, so if I like the setup I will probably cut the MHL-VGA adapter open and attache the signal lanes directly to a fitting plug for my HMD.
Also I don't own a TV just a 30" WQXGA Dell Monitor with a Duallink DVI port its one of the old models that had only Duallink DVI, no scaling no DVI no VGA and no other ports.
An other issue would be how to control the phone when it in my pocket, how can I attache some pointing device and would this even work with android OS?
Or would I have to wait for an unlocked bootloader and this cool ubuntu on phone projects that provide a full ubuntu desktop?
PS: is the micro usb port on the adapter only used for charging or is there still a USB signal on it?

If i got you right, you want to control phone, connected to PC monitor, over HDM goggles?
You can try something like this https://code.google.com/p/androidscreencast/
It is a software that enables remote control of your phone over WiFi, so if your goggles work on PC it should work here to. It does the same job as the cable connection (MHL to VGA)
As for the MHL to VGA adapter you have 4 connectors:
1) male microUSB (one you connect to your phone)
2) female microUSB (charger or power supply, so it doesn't use phone battery)
3) female VGA (for monitor)
4) 3,5 audio jack for sound

Not exactly I don't want to use a PC at all. I want to connect the HMD (Vuzix-Tac-Eye-LT-Monocular) directly to the phone and use some pointing device or mini keyboard to control the phone.

I have the adapter and a problem,
the phone is only giving out its native screen resolution, my HMD cant handle.
How can I change the resolution so SVGA ?

anyone played around with usb device support?
e.g. running a mouse and keyboard and external drive from a usb hub?

Ive been messing about and seeing what works, £1.99 adapter from ebay, awesome.
my keyboard works great, as do usb memory sticks, usb micro sd card reader, usb hard drive works with a usb hub for power oh usb hub worked great too. I just tried an old apple usb mouse and thats working lovely.
Also my usb midi adapter appears to work.
Thats all Ive tried so far, but for such a cheap price Im really happy with it

fwiw, what I'm seeking to do is to simultaneously:
- charge the phone
- drive a mouse/keyboard/external hard drive
- drive a monitor (or tv) (just starting to research this one)
essentially turn the phone into my "tower" for some desktop type computing
all this may require some creative cable splicing and fab.
