When i use WLAN the 3G/GSM connection is lost after a few minutes and i have to reboot the phone to get it back. Does anybody know why this might be? Could it be the Radio?
I think its turning it off because your connecting to the internet through the wifi, when you disable wifi it should re-enable the 3g connection, but if it doesnt you can turn on the data connection...
thats what it sounds like is going on from your post. When I turn on wifi it will drop the data connection but has always reconnected to it once I disable wifi or I go outside of my wifi's range and something try's to connect to the net...
Yes, it is logical, you could not have opened two types of connection concurrently. One type closed another one.

What Wifi allows you to do us connect wirelessly to another connection, at home its my DSL, which is much faster than the edge network, and if I did not have an unlimited data plan wouldnt add to my phone bill. In that way its very usefull. Seeing how its faster and available at home or in places where your cell signal might not be strong or available you can use it to get online.
But you need to tell it your no longer using wifi for it to reconnect through the network to deliver data to you again.

ok so when it comes to wi-fi im a big newbie, i have a tmo wing and have flashed (upgraded) rom...i also have dsl at home how is it i can connect and access this...when i search for wi-fi it usually only picks up my neighbors connections never my own...?
If you have a wifi router or your modem has a build in wifi option you go into your modem to set it up. Most modems / routers come with it broadcasting the SSID so you should see something (usually the default is the name of the manufacturer)
If you have your paperwork you can open your web browser and type in the address to open the internal OS and make changes as you see fit. For example mine is a linksys and its default address was http://192.168.1.1, most routers used to default to that but since a lot of modems are coming out with build in os and firewalls they have that IP so routers can be changed like mine. Once in the OS you can set up your pw so no one else can play with your settings

Then changed the chanel for some of my other devices, if you dont have anything that requires this leave it alone. Then enable WEP or other protection, 128 bit wep is pretty decent and anyone hacking through it will probably be disappointed with your lack of juicy goods.

The web will be a 26 or so string of letters / numbers that will equal the password you set. If all that goes through open IE on the phone and hit up google or something, if it loads your online.
Thats a jumbled and messy tutorial, I can fix it to be more user friendly if you need me to do it, but with you not seeing any SSID but your neighbors your wifi is either non existant or disabled...

Its no problem, the biggest thing will be weather or not you have a wifi router or modem. Then depending on the brand the IP you have to type in to log into the modem. Each router / modem will have paperwork with it that tells you how to do it, some are different but thankfully most are the same.
The un is usually blank and the pw is usually admin, sometimes now they dont even put one unless you specify it. Once your in the OS its pretty self explanitory, there are lots of things to not mess with, but in the wifi area you can look over my post and figure most of it out,
if you get hung up on somethin just post what it is and ill see what I can do

Not sure. Perhaps there is some sort of time out on your work network for inactive devices, or dhcp ip releases or something weird and "networky" like that?
Or perhaps your phone is going into a power save mode if you are not using it?
Just general ideas, I don't have this particular problem
I dont think many people have this issue! you must not have a setting correct, try downloading KaiserTweak and adjusting the timeout and also take a look at the routers settings I find it strange that a business would have an open network for security issues

I work at the university, and the network is unsecure. You have to enter login and pass at a webpage to gain access.
I cannot reconnect at all once ive been disconnected. So it should have anything to do with kaisertweak or timeouts.
I have tried every setting and combination. I have tried to select work/internet settings. Ive tried to tell the phone its a hidden network / not hidden network. I have tried to use power save / performance mode. Ive tried to turn off 3g, bluetooth, phone (everything basically).
When I tap connect, it says connecting and then it immediately goes to "active" and tries to connect to another network (which I dont have access to).

I have worked out the problem.. first if its a WPA enterprise connection, make sure its set to WORK and not INTERNET setting. it will work. my only works with schaps versions not duttys
on my old pda (Acer N50 premium) I had the same problem with my unis network... it would only work (if at all) for a few minutes then nada... but at home it was absolutely fine, quick stayed on and totally responsive... I wonder if it has something to do with the rubbish way unis run their IT...?

If it were all networks; your device, settings, equipment or rom would be the common denomenator. Since it's one network, it's that network.
Just because a network is or appears to be available, that doesn't mean that you can connect to it.

no, it could be the phone software. Lets says that a string is added to the registry if the network you are connected to disconnects you; a string that makes the phone cancel connections to the network. And lets assume that the network disconnected you because there is a hidden firewall in the phone software that blocks ping requests, thus making the network believe that the connection is lost and thus disconnecting you. Then we have a moment 22, which is basically something wrong with the phone.
As some readers already pointed out in this "wasted thread", when changing the rom (in one case) or when changing settings from "internet" to "work" (in the second case) there is a great possibility that this problem in fact has to do with phone software and not network.
In my case, it just happens to be neither of the mentioned solutions or any solution that I have found in other threads.
One thing you may want to check is that your wifi is set to max performance. The issue may also be that there is a DNS cache issue, in most cases it can be resolved by manually reconfiguring the connection.
I have been successful in configuring my phone's WLAN to connect to everything from open APS's, WEP, WPA, RADIUS and AP's with proxy redirects, so I can tell you that as with most cases, it's human error.
I have tried max performance.
How do I resolve a dns cache issue? Manually reconfiguring the network did not help (only thing that helps is a reboot).

I recently bought my s730. Quite pleased with it, but one thing bothers me.
When i connect to my wlan at home (zyxel_2602hw_d1a WPA-PSK TKIP) i'm able to connect to the router, but I don't seem to be able to get an connection to anywhere outside my own network. I tried using Live Messenger, IE, Opera and Skype, but nothing happens.
When I'm using GPRS or EDGE it all works smoothly.
Any suggestions?
Do you have your connection set to automatic or only through your phone network? I have seen a few problems with that.
Also, double check that you are entering wep or any other security protocol correctly, took my 6 tries before it would work, it looked like it was connected to the network but it really wasnt (just personal experience with this phone.)

I do have the connection settings in both IE and Opera set to automatic. I's there somewhere else I have to change settings?
I'm quite sure i typed the password correctly. I also checked the client list on the router and the phone showed up correctly.
Gah, cant remember where I saw it but there was a setting in the phone itself for what to connect to.
Another thing to try under the wifi connection open your saved connection and go into it and see if you have it set to connect to the internet or just to the private network under "network type" in the Wi-Fi sub menu of Wlan settings. Its late and I cant think right, i'll see about checking more into it later...

I tried removing security for my phone MAC address, but there dosn't seem to be any options on my router allowing this. So I'm still stuck;-/

Did you check network settings? I mean e.g. if you don't use DHCP server and you didn't fill in right settings phone may connect to network but may not get outside. I know it can look like "lame" question, but sometimes even a master can do a newbie mistake..

usually it is in section WLAN Advanced setup - WEP Encryption - disable and in WLAN MAC Filters - active + allow asotiation with table of adress your Wings - aply . I have Zyxel Prestige 660HW.
I'm sure that DHCP is active, and that I get an IP.

Your DNS are also provided automatically? Or could you ping (through some app) to any IP address of any server on the internet? If you succee, then we can look for a mistake with DNS.

Power management. under WLAN-settings i changed power setting from power save mode to best performance...

hello everybody,i have tried several times to connect to my router at home but no chance at the end i got this warning saying:
cannot log on to the wireless network this network requires a personel certificate to positively identify you.

I have a Netgear DG834T router as provided by Sky. I have one wired and two wireless connections running into it (let's call them WD, WL1 and WL2 respectively).
On the connections page I can see all of them under "attached devices"...but now I want to connect using my Kaiser (actually an O2 XDA Stellar)
What happens...
On the Kaiser, I get an IP address (assigned by DHCP) as normal - but can't access the internet - or at least, can only access it very rarely - http://www.google.com can't be found, but http://www.bbc.co.uk can. No idea why.
On the router, under "attached devices", not only can I NOT see the Kaiser, but WL1 and WL2 also disappear. WD remains visible. The router cannot ping the IP address of the Kaiser (timed out). If I disable WiFi on the Kaiser, then WL1 and WL2 are immediately visible again. Internet connection on WL1 and WL2 works, even when they are not visible.
I HAVE connected to this network before without any problems.
What the hooting heck is going on, and how do I fix it?

Time to troubleshoot! What happens with this phone on another wireless network. We need to determine if it's the phone or the network. Do you have any friends with a phone like this? Can you use their phone on your network? Do you have any ROMs flashed, has this phone ever been on the network without problems?
If the phone works on another router try looking for firmware updates for the router. Those things really do need to be updated often and it could have something to do with that.
Only have access to one network :-(. Might be a couple of weeks before I can access a hotel one or something like that.
Think next door neighbour has similar phone, but different provider...will try if he'll let me!

It connected fine when I first had it. As far as I know, I've changed nothing since then.

Neighbour's phone on my network gives the exact same problem. I've also noticed that when I click "Renew IP" on the Kaiser it doesn't work...it gives me 0.0.0.0, but will occasionally flash up the correct IP address. It's alomst as if the connection is being lost and remade every few seconds. The status ist gives me is "associated to network"...is that different to "connected"?
I've been trying to solve this on my router, but none of the settings seem to make any difference.

I get the same with the router from sky.
Kaiser says I have an IP address, 192.168.0.5, but the it doesn't show up on the attached devices on the router.
What I find that works is hit renew IP maybe twice until you get a really wierd IP address like
169.254.*.**, actually not sure if I'm picking up another network, but for some reason I don't think I am.
I can then browse the web and sync via wifi.
Really pisses me of that it says that it has an IP address but doesn't connect.
1) Make sure you dont have a proxy set up on your wifi connection on your device.
2) The 169. address is your device getting an unauthorised IP address as the router did not receive the correct encryption key from the device.
3) You can check if its an encryption thing by simply logging in to the router (192.168.0.1 in your web browser on pc) and changing the settings to turn wpa off and testing it. The routers username and password are on the card - its something like "sky" and "admin"

with my router.....i have to set the wifi power mode on my kaiser to "best performance", any other setting and i get that "associated to network" ****. been this way every since the hermes and the wizard.

No, proxy set-up as the device was bought unbranded in US.
Because there are issues with this router, encryption and media streaming devices, I have only restricted the mac addresses with no encryption.
Still don't know about the 169. ip address beacuse doesn't seem to come up as am ISP.
Now then, how wierd is this?
After all these issues and kind of giving up on it as a bad job, I also noticed that out on the road, my GPRS wasn't working either - TomTom couldn't connect to the "plus" traffic service.
I get on the phone to O2 who told me that my phone hadn't been "provisioned". After one false start where they didn't seem to do anything about it, I have just (literally) had them tell me to go to the O2 Operator settings and tell it to update the "O2 UK Post Pay_GPRS" and reboot.
GPRS now works. And magically, so does my WiFi - IP address negotiated and full access to internet and my router's setup page granted. Working like a charm again.
So - seems to me it's an account setting, and nothing to do with either me poor ol' router or me nice new phone.
For completeness, I was occasionally getting the 169 IP address too, so it sounds like we have EXACTLY the same problem - suggest you get onto your service provider ASAP.

OK so I turned on the router's 2.4GHz, but with broadcast SSID off. My N1 wouldn't even try to connect. So I turned on router SSID and it connects AES.
I do -not- want SSID broadcast on, as Windows machines' lazy active scan will find me. Sure they'll never get in, but I do not want broadcast on.

Yes, I remember connecting to a WiFi with SSID off, when I had Nexus.
It is pointless to keep SSID Broadcasting off. It is super easy to find your SSID anyway, and it causes all sorts of additional problems (like the one you are seeing above). Just keep the network secure and it makes life a lot easier.

Ok, but sure passive scanners like Kismet will still see me, however 90% of scans are done with an active scanner like Winduhs. Of course I'm using WPA2-AES, but I want to take every measure possible.
Now I find that whenever I have the phone connected to wifi, I lose -all- internet access. Just times out. 3G is still on and wifi is showing connected, but I can't get to websites. As soon as I turn off Wifi I can access the internet again through 3G.
With wifi I -can- access the wireless router's setup webpage from my phone, which tells me I am working through wifi, and I can remotely mount the phone filesystem on a LAN machine using sshfs, but I can not reach anything outside. Any idea why?

The WiFi is ALWAYS preferred to 3G, which means - when you're connected to WiFi, all the internet traffic is routed through WiFi.
I don't understand then, why all data traffic stops to the outside when wifi is connected. The rest of my LAN gets outside fine, just not the phone.
If you can see LAN computers and exchange data with them - it's not the phone that's making problems. See if you have any restrictions in your router.
Oh FFS, my fault...
I set my IP statically for my LAN, and through some alert troubleshooting I found I can ping IPs outside but not DNs. I'd mis-set the DNS server in wifi settings. Now it works great!
I can now use sshdroid to mount my phone's filesystem on my LAN securely. Now, if I could only get it to wifi associate with beacon off...
It would also be nice to mount a filesystem on my LAN to the phone, although I consider the phone unsecure and question the wisdom of that, even with DroidWall running.

As someone else said, turning SSID off is pointless. It's like taking the numbers off the outside of your house and thinking people driving by won't see your house sitting there.

If nothing else, please just respect my decision in this regard, or give valid proof that active scanners are not the preponderance.
I just got my self an Asus N12 router/repeater and already set it up for repeater mode, verified with a laptop places on the house that formerly had very low signal now shows almost a full bar now the problem I have is that the Galaxy Note seems to only want to connect to the main router which gives it like a very low or even dropped signal, using an app called wifi analizer it can show both my main router and the repeater ( both have the same SSID and only shows a different mac address of some sort, the repeater is actually detected giving off good signal but then again it always connects to the main router.. I never had to setup anything on the laptop it just gets better over all signal.

To use it, open it, Menu, Preference, Access Point(AP) and choose your preferred network.
It would be nice if I could set up multiple preferred access points, but I can live with the inconvenience of choosing a network while I'm travelling. I was getting annoyed with having to keep doing it at home though.

It allows you to set connect priorities...
Or even Wif-Fi scanner wRecX(Free) where your device can connect with the retrieved access points specified in the list...

Cracked it. WrecX free in market allows you to set a preferred AP, and either allow or exclude OPEN AP should you lose signal.
Re:tasker, basically a full phone API with undocumented GUI. Complex, requires *full* permissions (not my bag!), costs 4GB£
I had the exact same problem and this fixed it. It uses just 472Kb and it works. Thanks!
To use it, open it, Menu, Preference, Access Point(AP) and choose your preferred network.
It would be nice if I could set up multiple preferred access points, but I can live with the inconvenience of choosing a network while I'm travelling. I was getting annoyed with having to keep doing it at home though.

I will try both solutions once I have my repeater up and running again, It is currently used as my primary router as it gives a better over all coverage compared to my old router but I will go back to using the repeater when I have the time to do so.

A repeater automatically configured to have the same SSID at least on the Asus repeater mode, Access Point mode on the other hand allows you to use a different SSID but you need a LAN cable to connect to it.
After setting it back up, I've already figured it out that if I needed to connect to my repeater I must have a static IP settings on my phone.. for some odd reason it does not provide any IP from the DHCP of the primary router, so when I go up a floor I just need to reconnect manually to the primary router by turning the wifi toggle off then on again.
I have exactly the same issue, Static IP works but Notes can't pick an IP while connected to the repeater only work workarounds I found 1. static ip, 2. setup DHCP on the repeater too.

Static IP is the only work around I found for this to work, my laptop though connects to the repeater with out issues and the need for static IP. Same issue with the Galaxy tab7.7 Im guessing this could be an andriod/samsung issue.
There is a known issue with some Samsung Android phones, including Note, failing to support BSSID roaming. That is were the wifi device hands over between separate APs with the same SSID.

You could set your repeater to use a different SSID, if supported. I have had success with BSSID roaming when using Imilka's CM9 build for the Note.

I cant see the option for my Repeater to be labelled differently
by definition a repeater will have the ssid that the main one

Yes, but some Asus models do have the ability to have it renamed.
