I purchased a Seidio mini-usb to audio cable and I cannot get output in both ears no matter what headset or combination of stereo adapters I use. If I hold a stereo adapter half way in the audio cable I can hear in both ears, but that hardly suffices.
Does anybody else own one of these? Do I just have a defective one or is there some secret I don't know?

I know that my room mate has a pair and they work fine. I would assume that it is just a defective pair, or your port is messed up.
I have 2 pair. One worked fine, but the cable is so cheap it started to break after 1 week, and only an hour or so of use. I bought another, and only get sound out of one ear. I think you might need to by one of the HTC remotes if you actually want something with quality.

I bought this one, and it works great. Problem is that it's a bit bulky, but the cable quality is great. I bought one that just outputted audio only and it was small and skinny. broke in 20 minutes of use...
Look for one with a REALLY thick cable. The one above probably has one. The ones with "normal" looking cables on ebay actually have thread-thin wires that will snap in a week.
i have Seidio's 2-in-1 isolators, and they work fine for me, but it does take some doing to make sure the jack is fully pushed in. it goes in farther than the usual sync/charger cables. the main problem is the way it bends out at the jack, which prevents me from taking out my stylus easily.

Hey anyone know of a 3.5mm headphone jack - Ext-USB that works with this phone? I've been searching everywhere, but haven't found anything that works.
i got one with the phone well it was a 2.5 i think and i got an adapter from Radioshack... it's very ugly and dangles i really wish phone companies would just put 3.5 mm jacks right into the phone -
you can also google mini-usb to 3.5 and can find some.

If you got to your local T-mobile store you can get an HTC branded 11-pin mini usb to 3.5 mm headphone jack for around ten dollars. I've been using it for a couple months and it works great since it was made to work with the Android HTC Dream. It's a little more pricier than you can find it online, but it's definitely reliable, the connection is sturdy, and it's not terribly overpriced.

Which rubber part breaks off? (So I can be careful and elongate the time my cord exists)
I gotta admit, if I wasn't paranoid about buying stuff over the net, I would buy that. It's exactly what I was looking for originally, something sturdy (mainly the one piece connection that is likely to break) and simple.

Im just using the adapter for my Dream. Works great, has a built in microphone and hang up button that the ones online DONT have. Connection is fair, sometimes you gotta tighten it a bit.

It looks like it's bigger but I like it because it's got more cable, which to a degree makes it more flexible in where I can put it. The little block includes a mic, and also has the connector for charging and 3.5mm output. So I can charge and listen to music, or charge and talk using standard headphones/earphones with the built in mic.

I used my TD2 this way, connected audio to my car's AUX, and then used the TD2 for both navigation and music.
Today I have a passive holder, but I really don't like the hassle with connecting/disconnecting two cables each time.

I think it is not necessary, because without this fixed connectors you can connect your charger or audio connector directly to your phone.

I want a holder with fixed connectors.
As far as i have seen they are not available on the market.
but i have seen a thread with pictures where a fellow member has glued an audio connector in i think it was the active brodit holder.
read through the treads for car holders.
This is almost exactly what I want. I have an iphone and used the Griffin Autopilot. I connected to the car via 3.5mm (I dont want/need an FM transmitter). It also plugged in to the cigarette lighter and charged it (AND had nice FWD/REWIND/PAUSE/PLAY buttons on top.
Anything out there...?

I have been looking for a while also. I did see someone on XDA mod a Brodit active holder by gluing a 3.5mm jack at the base of the holder. But as the Brodit holder is already a bit pricey I kept looking.
I have found a device that looks like it is sold under three different brand names although they all look to be the same. The one thing I am unsure of is if the 2.5mm jack will output the audio for music, GPS and voice calls or if it is just restricted to phone related audio.
I have ordered the active car kit below and will post back with my findings once it arrives.

I have not used it extensively but here are my impressions so far:
The device is made from a very 'light' plastic not from metal as I had optimistically hopes for. The build quality is pretty good!
Inserting the phone into the device for the first time was a frightening experience. It is a very snug fit, and I was more than a little concerned about the pressure required to seat the HD2 over the 3.5mm jack and the microUSB, thankfully no damage was made to either jack on the HD2 and the alignment of said ports appears to be very good.
The 2.5mm headset jack that is on the speaker/car charger part does indeed pass the audio (in stereo) to a car head unit. So it will pass all audio when plugged in. Exactly what I wanted.
The pickup answer button on the speaker/car charger worked somewhat intermittently for me. I will have to play around with it a bit more to see that the behavior was not due to operator error as I suspect. But it is not a crucial part as it is easier to reach the HD2 than this tiny button.
The suction mount sticks well to the windscreen, but the actual 'neck' of the mount is very short with minimal adjustment. I am now looking for a way to fix it to a Brodit vent or dash mount for something a bit more robust and unobtrusive. The curly cord is also on the large side and it is captive so can not easily be replaced
The holder does NOT swivel into landscape orientation. If it were connected to a swivel mount the HD2 would most likely fall out as it is high up over the center point of the mount and the is nothing other than the tight fit holding it there. But I have not really investigated this yet. Maybe I will test it out when I get a swivel Brodit mount. eXpansys list it as being compatible with the Herbert Richter Gooseneck Suction Mount so hopefully we have some other mount options.
There appear to be a number of stores selling what appears to be the same device under different branding like Kidigi and eXpansys have versions also. My advice is to buy the cheapest from the store that you trust the most to honor any warranty issues. I have never purchased from newTimes before so apart from the shipping in a good timeframe, I have no grounds to recommend them over other stores that sell this dock, like eXpansys.
All in all it is great value but I still have some concern about the long term affects on the microUSB port. I really do wish that Microsoft had specified a standard dock connector for Windows Phone 7. This is one area Apple has it over Windows Phone.
I've been searching since November for a 3.5mm Aux cable to plug my Focus into my car stereo. The problem I've run into with a bunch of them, is with the hole in the top of the case I have. I have the red (pinkish?) and black CaseMate case from the AT&T store and it seems to be blocking all of the cables I have from making an ideal and secure connection. Just wondering if anyone has had any luck with one and where I could get it.
I'm assuming the head (not the pin) of the cable just needs to be a little smaller to fit into the cutout of the case. Thanks in advance!

Have you tried one of the retractable cords from Monoprice? The ends on those seem fairly small.
Figured it out
My case wasn't lined up correctly with the headphone jack. After a little wiggling, the holes line up a little better and any cable or headphone designed to fit into a recessed headphone jack work. Thanks

Picked up the HTC Vivid yesterday, came from the Galaxy SII(gave to fiance) has anyone else noticed a problem with the headphone jack in that you have the really PRESS the headphone jack in, then if you just slightly twist the connector it will tell the device you've disconnected the head phones and disables the music?
This has happened with multiple headphones and is a major downer for me as I am very active when I have my headphones in, mostly this will become a problem while riding my motorcycle to work.
How are your headphone jacks????

I've had my Vivid since launch and haven't noticed any issues with the headphone jack yet. You might take it back to the store, compare against the floor model, and if yours definitely has an issue then show the AT&T employee and they should swap you out for a new one.
I have a specific pair of headphones that goes in the jack very easily until the last bit, then I have to push pretty hard.
I have not experienced any disconnect when twisting the connector so far. That would seem to be a hardware problem worthy of a return.

yea.. mine also seems very tight when i was testing the FM radio.. luckily i never use headphones so i dont really care.

otherwise, its an awesome phone, very similar to evo3d/4g with the obvious differences.
My headphone jack is very tight. Love that factor. I use standard iPhone headsets. It seems to hold the headset in tight so as to not lose connect unless it is wanted.
Tightness with HTC earphones
I'm using the earphones that came with my HTC HD2. While testing the Vivid FM radio, I realized I was getting sound in only one earphone. I pushed on the plug and suddenly got sound in the other. I removed the earphones and re-inserted them. I could definitely tell an initial stop and then a second audible click when it went all the way in.
checked 4 different display models in 2 different stores, and had a guy go through a half dozen new phones in the box and all of them had headphone jack problems.
For what it's worth, I've discovered different headphones make the difference.
My Sennheiser canal earbuds disconnect easily if I'm not careful. My Phillips wrap-arounds are rock solid on the same phone.
Tested with my wife's Vivid and had the same results.

I have exactly the same result, have 3 headphones and one of them getting pulled out a bit easily, while other 2 works perfectly fine.
Gotta say, this is getting a little frustrating. Who's got a decent pair of canal earbuds that they like AND that don't disconnect and stop my music every time I put my phone back in my jacket pocket.
This is a little stupid really. I'm not using cheap headphones, and I don't have any problems with any other phone, my nook tablet, etc. A crap headphone jack on a phone like this is highly disappointing.
I have some house of Marley jammin buds and some Skullcandy FMJs that work fine. Only ones I have had trouble with are the blackberry ones.

Mine has the same issue. I do remember that my son's HTS came with headphones but they were the kind with the microphone and had 4 contacts on the connector instead of 3 that a regular set of headphones have. I will come home and will try my son's headphones to see if that is the reason.
Headphone jacks should be a known technology. I've used my Sennheiser headphones in a ton of devices, and never had an issue till my brand new phone.
That being said, yes, the phone has the ability to take an extended jack for microphone compatibility, so I ordered a well reviewed cheap pair of phones that happened to be on sale today for half off and include the in-line microphone. ($10 bucks, yes indeed!)

What I've noticed is that when you twist the headphone jack, it'll come out a little bit. The headphones with shorter jacks that are almost completely concealed in the phone will stay connected still, because it won't pop out far enough. The headphones with jacks that are slightly larger disconnect more easily, since more of it sticks out. Not really sure if that's just coincidence or not, but it's just what I've been seeing.
Have some problem here with my Shure headphones. The quick and easy fix that seem to work well for me is to use a different (short) extension cable that snaps in well to the jack...
...having said that, still sux to have paid $200 for a high-end phone and get such a crappy jack.
Count me in as someone with headset jack problems on their Vivid too...
My Sennheiser HD280's slip in and out of the jack, causing it to think it has a microphone connected (and pausing playback)
My car's aux-in cable just won't stay connected-- there's plenty of friction, but just rotating the cable alone causes it to think the headphones have vanished.
My cheapo headphones work, so long as I keep the cable perfectly still and allow no rotation/pull on the cable.
This is rather frustrating, I must admit.
I'm going to go to the ATT store tomorrow and see if their demo unit has this same issue also.
(Side note: MHL doesn't work on my phone either, but I'm not sure if that's a side effect of the way I rooted my phone)
i noticed this problem with my 3.5mm in my car. I was stumped because my sony canal earbuds were working perfectly and my gaming headset (turtle beach hpx) was working perfectly as well (the jack on this is pretty big). I went to radioshack and tried a different 3.5mm and it fit perfectly. Im guessing certain plug-ins dont work for some reason.

Just got ROG 2 yesterday... While testing all the spec and accessories, i felt that my 3.5 jack port is not that good. Every headset that i tried was very loose and easy dropped.
Am i the one feeling like this or do any one face the same problem?
Maybe a little once it's in, but getting it in is tight! 1st time I tried, I use Bluetooth ones mainly....
Mine has a solid connection. not loose at all. After plugging in my earbuds, I can suspend the phone by the cable and it doesn't come undone. I can even jiggle it with it only secured by the 3.5 mm jack. When inserting the cable, i can feel it click solidly.

I tried lil hard inserting but no its not getting in, I don't wanna break the pon inside so i just left it alone..

Yea the headphone jack on this phone is super tight compared to the LGs and Samsungs I've had.

maybe check other jacks, some are tight. worst case scenario is you have a defective one.
Mine is fine I use it every weekday when traveling to and from work. No complaints here
No issues here also. Tested with Oneplus Bullets, Audiotechnica M50x and some cheap FiiO headphones.
