Skyfire - The next big browser? - XPERIA X1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Skyfire is a free, downloadable mobile web browser that allows you to experience the internet on your phone exactly like on your PC. Now, you can use the full web from your mobile phone with unprecedented speed and simplicity – without the typical restrictions and limitations that current ‘mobile web’ efforts offer. It’s “The Web”, not some mobile web. (Taken from their site)
The best feature in this? "Unlike other mobile browsers, Skyfire supports the desktop version of Adobe Flash applications so sites, including those that serve-up video and music, are rendered exactly as you would expect - just like your PC."
Now... Will Opera support flash or not, we can always install this on Xperia - or any windows mobile - to get flash support for sites...
NOTE: I just read in the main forum the following: "Please note that this board does not tolerate cracks, serials, pirated versions or the posting of software that should have been aquired by legal means and we will remove (delete) them when found. Please help us keep this site clean by posting links of that sort in this tread as well as telling us if you have found anything on the ftp site."
So in light of that, i have removed the link to download Skyfire via RapidShare from here. Anyways, i'm sure if you register on the site, you'll get your hands on it - since even i got it and i am in Pakistan!
Best regards.

This is all well and good, but currently, skyfire doesn't support VGA or WVGA devices!!! Is there a fix/workaround to this?

It doesn't? Well it's a Beta, so hopefully will soon.

Wow thanks for telling me about this. I installed it and it looks very promising. Not to mention the pages load really fast.

Awesome!!!!

Well after using it for a few days I switched to Opera Mobile bet 9.6. I actually like it quite a bit better then skyfire. Yes skyfire load pages faster then anything I've seen but zooming on those pages takes time and trying to scroll is bad. Opera's new program takes full time to load the page but once it's loaded the scrolling and moving is very good.

In case you can't download this, then i just updated the first post with a rapidshare link to download this.

Skyfire has shut down nonUS winmo 1.5 server access as of July1, 2010. Android v2 still works in Australia. Have found an alternative but costs ~$30 after a 7 day trial, Mach5 Web @ www.netacceler.com. This is a Hongkong based server and may encounter some geolocking by some sites (such as ABC.net.au iview). This is the only video enabled browser for winmo that I'm aware of. It doesn't 'remember' usename and passwords as Opera does.

in the past , i used to LIKE skyfire. Why? because it supports flash and other stuffs. it plays videos on other sites not just youtube. What I don't like about it TODAY is that it does not allow other countries, like the Philippines to use it. now I'm stucked at old opera. so sad.

And it still suffers from the very issues that have been there since it's introduction (checkboard issue, slowness of scrolling and zooming...). Sadly one more app among many others for which development has been stopped due to the imminent lauch of Windows Phone 7. I think now we definitely have to face the fact that our platform (Windows Mobile) is dying.

openning xda-devs on the device

hi all,
i'm really frustrated with my htc s730, has anyone tried to open forum.xda-developers.com on their device?
fast openning of the page but as soon as i start scrooling it takes me two minutes to get to the bottom of the page.
maybe that's beacuse the missing drivers.
But i think it's not acceptable to sell a device with so low performances. I feel cheated, s710 my previous phone performs alot better.
i get the ideia that the device slows down when openning pictures...
???
use Opera...
i usualy don't like to use something just because the original software doesn't work but i guess it will be the case.
anyone has a beta of opera 9.5?

Wasn't released yet.
I use Opera v8x, i guess, this is the best PIE replacement (yet).
There are some others out there, too.
Just read Menneisyys Windows Mobile Web Browsing Bible ..
i'm downloading the 9.3 beta to try it...
Yes this forum take aaaaaages to view on the S730.
Strange as it is that this site is about mobiles but has no mobile friendly version?!
open www.xda-developers.com and you will see a pda version link on the left of the page.
The problem is that the post are not arranged by last post, what makes that version loose all of it's funcionality... :S
Not sure as I have never tried coming here from my phone yet, but I know with some other sites IE has some default display options that will either keep the origional website layout and look, or modefy it for "easier" use. I have been to a few sites that were useless and took ages to navigate unless I changed how IE displays the page. Might be worth a try. (not that opera isnt good, use it on the PC and the phone )

Tilt Web Page Rendering

O.K. Guys and Gals: Long time reader, very infrequent poster. Anyway, Tilt with latest AT&T stock ROM. Seems incapable of rendering one web page that I cannot live without:
http//adds.aviationweather.noaa.gov
I've gotten some good suggestions around the web, but so far no joy. My VZW 6700 CAN render this page very clearly using PIE.
Tried:
IE 6.1 cab
Opera 9.5
Cingular disable proxy
Open to any suggestions as I hit the road Monday and want to like this handset. This issue is a definite deal killer as I need to be able to check weather wherever I happen to be.
Couple of screen grabs for your viewing pleasure. As you can see if you look at relative file sizes, there is a LOT less data in the Tilt grab.
TIA,
Bob Duckworth

Guess I should try Mini then. Mini uses a proxy server to render before shipping to the handset??
Dumb question, but which version does one choose for the 8925? Its not listed.
Thanks,

Netfront 3.5 beta blows them all out to Pluto
Checkout my screenshots below. Netfront 3.5 rendered the site within 3 seconds or so. I'll do a video of that loading as well in a few minutes.
I'm absolutely floored by Netfront 3.5s capabilities for a month or so since I've been using it. Only gripe.. its a crazy resource hog (which is ok on my Tilt as its got ample RAM) and causes most other resource intensive apps/functions to not run smoothly.
But.. no biggie. Its flick browsing is just sooooper butter smooth. And best of all it DOES NOT pre-cache/render any site on some remote server before displaying on your device..
I absolutely love it... love it love it love it..
actual video of your specified site loading on NF 3.5 beta
download the .rar (750k) or the .zip (5mb) and the video is in .avi format (19mb). Check it out.

Kaiser and the Internet "pda friendly"

Hi All,
Has anyone else noticed that the Kaiser / IE seems to redirect you to a "pda friendly" version of a website.. I found this alot with News Sites and its nothing like the site you get from a standard PC/Desktop. I dont know how it knows I'm searching from my Kaiser and dont like the "pda friendly" pages, is there anyway to override this "feature" - After all I like to think I am getting to the actual website I want and not what "they" want...
It isn't the Kaiser that takes you to the PDA site. When you access the webserver that hosts the site it checks what browser you are requesting the page from.

You can avoid this and see the 'real' web by downloading and installing Opera. There is a setting in opera 9.5b's options to see the full web page rather than the mobile version.
Thanks there - I guess I should have known it was the Sites server etc and not the Kaiser.... So IE can't do it then, not had any experience with Opera so will give it a go (assuming I can find it) also I hear there is a Firefox version around called Minimo but again not used it before and dont know if it can do what Opera can....
Many thanks, will let you know how I get on.
Minimo was abandoned somewhere in 2006 at v0.2, was pretty unusable compared to today's browsers like Opera.
Hi,
Thanks for all the advice, yes I can see the pro's of Opera. Very sleek and lets me see the "proper" web page as opposed to the "pda friendly". Shame about Minimo tho as I like Firefox.... Here's to happy web surfing.

PIE isn't that great... but in these cases the owners of those particular sites have set it up to give a special version of their sites.
Its possible to get to the real version by messing with the user agent... but Opera does it soooooooo much better there isn't really any point. Opera mini 4 is free and works on any java enabled mobile phone (including the kaiser)
Opera Mobile 9.5 is available as a free beta version for windows mobile devices. Eventually they will release a commercial version which they will charge for and this is the one you really want on your kaiser (and should be worth the money!)

Mozilla Fennec on WM

Hello
As far as I know, that Mozilla Fennec is nowadays available only for desktop emulated or Linux Nokia N810 version.
Now,I have read this new...
http://www.msmobilenews.com/windows...refox-named-fennec-and-released-in-alpha.html
You can see the screenshot up-right taken from WM device(seems to be as our, depending on scheme).
So my question is:
How can we start it under Windows Mobile? I didn't found any WM installation.
if you ever find out please pm me.
On the wiki of the mozilla website, it looks like the release is somewhere next week. link.
i read about it. It has to release in a week.
Here is an article you can read:
http://www.wmexperts.com/firefox-mobile-may-be-touch-pro-next-week
They are targeting an Alpha release in the first week of Feb. I can't wait to try it out.
Ask of now, there are no offical downloads, yet.

i understand the hype about it and everything,
but you know skyfire is based of firefox's source code right?
i dont know how much dif it will be

Skyfire is a SERVER application; a server processes websites and returns data to your phone via the client application. Your phone never directly browses websites, everything goes through Skyfire servers. This is similar to how Opera Mini works.
Fennec is a true client browser, like Opera Mobile, IE, NetFront.
In otherwords, Fennec and Skyfire are completely different.
oh ok, i did see it has tabbed browsing does anybody know if it will have flash?

I dont see anything thats says it supports flash. I would imagine that if it did support flash it would be made very clear as it would be a great "selling point"
New Skyfire build
In the mean time: there is a new Skyfire build 81xx which now seems to is realy VGA compatible. Yust brose with IE to get.skyfire.com, chose touch based wm 6 and off you go. Have fun, screen looks much better now.

I thought the only browsers that contacted the websites directly was IE and NetFront.

just go to skyfire.com with IE and download it from the screen that comes up, i wish i would have told me there was a new version availible
exactly, they claim that you get a new menu item if there is an update, never seen it though.
Runs quite nice, true flash support including youtube direct play. Just a litle bit slower as Opera mini.
For me the third browser when you realy need flash support.

Is there a new skyfire that supports VGA? I went on the site but doesn't show the version..
I have read about pre-release build of Fennec, but experiences are very bad for now. We will see next week, how it will be. I want to try Skyfire as well, but it is available only for US as my informations are. Or is it working in EU as well?
It is available in EU to, just go to "get.skyfire.com" and download the WM 6 version. Go there with IE as you need a WAP browser.
Yes, the pre release of fennec sucks...

Anyone Try Out Iris Browser?

Looks pretty cool. I'm downloading now.
http://on10.net/blogs/sarahintampa/Iris-A-New-Browser-for-Windows-Mobile-Emerges-from-Beta/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpX5JZWtu-g
http://www.irisbrowser.com/download/
The Iris Browser is a new, Webkit-based web browser for Windows Mobile devices running versions 5 or 6(+). The company recently released an updated version (Iris Browser 1.1.0) which is a very different piece of software than the one that was being used by beta testers. In the latest update, the company says they’ve merged a year’s worth of WebKit development into the browser while also re-auditing all their work, addressing performance issues, and making the browser capable of viewing almost any website on the net.
Most notably to end users, the refreshed browser now provides Flash support by way of a plugin that converts the Flash Lite ActiveX control into an Iris Browser plugin. The end result is that when you browse to Flash-enabled pages, you will see a black image with a play button which you can click to optionally see the Flash content.
The new Iris browser is highly compliant, too, scoring a 100/100 on Acid3 with only a couple of minor rendering glitches. Those glitches are related to fonts, where they deliberately cut some corners for better performance. Iris is also highly compatible with iPhone websites, the company reports.

Hey pretty good! I'm just apparently having some trouble to click on certain links that don't respond, and can't get flash videos to work, but the rest works impressively well!

For flash support, install the official Flash player 3.1 to your device, (not memory card), and unzip the attached file (NPFL3ppc.dll) to \Program Files\Iris Browser\Plugins Flash should now work in Iris Browser.

Well sorry but to me it's skyfire that "sucks balls"....
For comparable "speedy" browsing I much prefer Opera Mini, now as sometimes a "full" browser with local rendering is needed I was still looking for one and it seems Iris does the job.
And it's also supposed to supplrt flash if you read above. I didn't manage to get it wirking with those instructions though... not that I care much actually.
a little help
apparently, i am a moron. the download is not in cab format, and i do not know how to install it. i did not see any instruction on their site.

Didn't work for me. Trying to play a video at YouTube, I get an "could not create ActiveX object" error.
Where did you get the Official Flash 3.1? I installed the redistributable developer flash from the Adobe site.

I'm so supprised more peeps don't use Mini as defacto browser as it's so fast, also keeps my data costs down, there is times i use fully fledged browser but Mobile does the trick.
Have found evey iris release slow to render page and then even when rendered "or so you think" you move the page down and get grey squares, just like Skyfire.
Just my opinion.
Yea for me Mini does 95% of the job, but I have a couple of sites I visit that don't appreciate the whole going through a 3rd party server thing. I ditched Mobile as the full-fledged alternative because all the versions I tried had very annoying bugs (from SIP bugs to Mobile switching the phone to reverse landscape when quitting it if i had been using it in landscape mode for example). That iris version seems to be a bit faster rendering too.
dont get me wrong opera mini is my main browser built in but for tubin' and myspace theres nothin better than skyfire.
I just installed 1.1.3 and this thing is *AMAZING*
Best browser I've ever used on windows mobile.
Stuff just looks ... *right*
I'm so happy winmo is finally get a browser to rival Safari. THIS IS IT.
Personally, i don't think it is great ...there are alot of bugs and the biggest one for me is the HUGE memory consumption and ungracefull UI. People Like opera becaus you have a full screen to work with... and this right now is not cutting it for me.
I'll watch its progress i guess, its not quite "up to speed" for me yet....

I completely agree...although I must say this version is much better the previous, much less buggy, even though there are still some bugs. and the UI could have been a bit more pleasent...I will stick with Skyfire

hmm... haven't tried NetFront; haven't even heard of it up until you mentioned it... does it have OOB flash support? i've tried opera and skyfire, and the new version of IE shipping with wm6.1/wm6.5... so far, Iris seems to be the best browser for me... features like g-sensor (accelerometer) support, touch wheel (HTC Diamond/Touch Pro devices) support, mouse emulation, etc.. really make it the best choice for me.
anyone
Has anyone got iris browser 2.0(latest) version? Torch mobile is no longer there. RIM has taken over and it is no longer available for download. I am using 1.1.9 at the moment.
If anyone has it please post it.
