Broken screen- how to replace? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

So someone crashed into my son at a football game and broke the screen on his 2 week old Tilt...
Anyone know if it's worth trying to fix myself or should I just go for a warranty/insurance repair?
How hard is it to replace the screen? Are there any drawbacks (warranty/insurance voids, etc)? How much does it cost to get a new screen on the Tilt and how long does it take to install?

I would go for the warranty if it's still good.I took apart my Tilt and put it back together with guidance:
http://www.pdacenter.ru/razborka/razbor_htc_kaiser/

Well the warranty doesn't cover broken display, unfortunately. And my insurance deductable with AT&T is somewhere around $150 (can't remember exactly how much, but I know it's around $150). So I am thinking I might want to try to fix it myself and if I fail, then use the insurance...
Thanks for the link!

will i just replace my sceen about a 1 week ago, i got the sceen off ebay for $45 take about 1hr. yes it going void warranty because u going brake the seal, but ya it not that hard change it up.

Where is the seal? Is it possible for me to do it very carefully so the seal can be put back unbroken?

Is it "obvious" that the phone took a fall? If not, then you could probably get it replaced by calling AT&T's handset repair department (800-801-1101, I think) and just lie to them.
I never had a screen issue with my 8125, but I did brick around 7 of them from various issues with flashing custom roms. As long as I was careful with how I worded it, I got a new phone each time.

Screens don't just crack. They'll sniff out the lie.
and another one...i do feel better now after i broke mine, since it is a tilt u should be able to go through service see how much that will cost, if its over $200 u might be better off doing it urself by getting a screen elsewhere
My screen was cracked after 4 days of having it :')
It was inside my pocket without any further protection and i walked against something. Did cost me 136 euro to fix the screen.

where did you get yous fixed?
Unless you insured it somehow, you're going to have to pay to replace it. I don't see why anyone should pay for your accident if you didn't arrange coverage for it somehow.
they don't allow you to get insurance on it.
AT&T might not, but you can add it to your homeowners/renters policy or secure outside insurance from a third party (Safeware is one that I'm aware of). Mine is covered under my homeowner's insurance at a very low cost.
aite. but what do i do?

You go buy a replacement or get the screen fixed. They're not going to believe that you didn't break it yourself. I believe PocketPC Techs advertises that they can fix the screen.

I cracked my screen just s few days after getting it. I just repaired it this morning.
Contact njbridges here on the forum, or go to www.phoneystore.com and order the LCD from him. You have to get the whole LCD, as the digitizer portion is not available as a separate component. It cost me $120 + shipping to the US. He even included all the tools you need to make the repair. It literally took me 15 minutes to do. There are 4 torx screws under the display to remove, and then you use the separator tool that is included to remove the top housing. Once you've done that, unplug the LCD, slide it out, slide the new one in, reconnect the LCD, reassemble the top plastics, replace the screws, power back on, and you're done.
It's really simple to do. Why pay someone else to do it (especially if you're given the correct tools for the job).
Regards,
Jeff
Send it to at&t just don't tell them that the screen is broken tell them that it doesn't turn on, it worked for me and my 8125.

Me, too.
I just got back from Panama City, Panama where I was without my screen for a week. I talked on my phone while leaving the mall, put it in my pocket and pulled it out 15 minutes later after getting out of a taxi and the screen was broken. I'll be calling AT&T as this is my business' corp account. I had insurance on my Treo and my 8125, but think I may have dropped it on this one.
It does suck. The phone was three weeks old. I've gone back to my 8125 that's gone through hell and back without any problems....
I've got my fingers crossed or else I'll just order the screen myself.

Any time. One thing to note, putting the outer plastic cover back on is a little bit of a bear - it's a tight fit. you will need to put some serious pressure on the housings to snap them together. It's especially difficult on the power button side of the phone. I used a small flat screwdriver between the top and the keyboard to support the carrier plastics on the top and then used thumb pressure to snap the top plastic to the carrier.

As someone who has been through quite a few exchanges with Cingular (none since AT&T officially took over), and as a former employee of a Cingular warranty service provider, I can tell you that they do cover screen damage under very specific circumstances.
When going through the process on the phone, they will ask you basic questions like:
"Is there a pink strip under the battery?" - Indicates water damage
"Was the phone ever dropped from a distance greater than 2 feet?" - This is the important question for screen damage. Damage sustained from drops of 18 inches or less are covered.
It is a reasonable assumption that a cell phone, which is handheld most of the time, will be dropped on occasion.
The biggest question is whether or not the phone shows signs of "physical abuse". If you can answer no to that, then you should have no problem getting your phone exchanged.

AT&T Warranty Replacement

Ok i recently posted about my device being dead and getting a replacement, well i guess it was easier than i thought and they have shipped out a replacement device. The problem is is they read me the terms and in those terms was "if we find any physical or water damage we will charge you $499 unless you send back the replacement and either way they WONT SHIP BACK YOUR DAMAGED DEVICE!!!!" I think that is rediculous. And ok i have a small crack in my lcd that happened a few days before it stopped booting. Ive kept all the factory stickers and screen film on from day one (been waiting for my screen protector) so im sure they will remove the screen film but you cant notice the crack at all, only if you look very very very closely you can see like a darker area along the crack. I have a oem lcd on the way and i was planning on replacing it so i guess my questions are should i send it back as is (do they take it apart and thoughroughly inspect it) or should i replace the lcd (does replacing the lcd require you to take apart the base or just the back screws on the screen?) and if you need to take the base apart is there a way to peel off the void sticker and replace the lcd and then replace the void sticker?
Replacing the screen will void the warranty so you might as well just send it as is and see what happens if you want the warranty work done.
so i would have to start at the base and unscrew the screws around the battery? theres no way to peel off the void sticker?
only thing with that is what happens when they find the crack? you lose the phone and have to pay for another phone.I think you might come out better just looking online to buy one and see if you can get the other broken phone to work again,if nothing else you'll have a phone you can use for parts which is more than you'll have if you send the phone in.But its your call if you don't think they'll see it go for it.
do they really have the right to keep my original device? i think that is rediculous if i send theirs back they should send mine back...
Bring it into an AT&T Store and ask them if your scratch will give AT&T the right to keep your device.

I agree. Take it in to an authorized AT&T dealer ahead of time and have them check the damage.
If they say it's screwed up and AT&T would keep your phone, then you know your options.
Personally, i wouldnt even ask them about it. I'd just take my phone in with the ****ed up LCD and see if you can get someone in the store to replace the LCD for you. Tell them you will pay for them to replace it so the phone will stay under warranty. See if that works?
Don't take it to a authorized dealer becuase they have know idea what there taking about. Take it to a AT&T corporate store, because they work for AT&T.

I'm getting my tilt soon too
ok so ive heard back from htc, they quoted me that the mobo would be replaced under warranty but the lcd/housing would cost $192 (they also stated the housing of the phone needed to be replaced because "its such a tight fit that they need to break it to get the lcd out" and thats just crap!) I told the guy that that does not need to happen and im sure of that so he sent a request back to the techs to see what can be done if the phone can be sent out wit the replaced mobo and the broken lcd still inside (as i can still use the device its only a small crack). He stated that they need to replace the lcd for the purpoe of running the tests to make sure the mobo is fine so it can be covered under their 90day parts warranty. Any advice on what to say? Dont i have the right to get MY property back (the broken lcd) as is. They never stated anywhere that they would have to keep the broken parts by policy..

Just dropped my Tilt

I just set my tilt on top of a dresser, thinking it was fully on the surface, and watched it cascade down onto a solid, uncarpeted floor. Left me with a scattered battery cover, battery, and phone. After reassembling, I found that the phone "seemingly" still works ok. There is a hairline crack in the faceplate on the top right corner, and the back housing edge on the right side is skewed outwards.
Is there anything I can do to fix this? Get replacement parts and try to do it myself? Seek warranty or repair? Send to AT&T or HTC for repair? Get AT&T phone insurance incase i knocked something loose inside and my phone dies in the relative future?
I'm beside myself right now. I'm so careful with my things and paranoid about the slightest scratch on anything. I still have the first portable cd player that I bought in 1997, and it still works like a charm.
Any suggestions? Grievances? Condolences?
Thanks for any replies...

Last time I dropped a phone and cracked the case Cingular did fix it under warranty. It was a while ago though, with my old TDMA Motorola Startac. I'd at least call warranty exchange and see what they have to say.

I dont think phone insurance is available for the tilt and other expensive devices because it is not worth it for ATT, they would be losing a lot of money every time. Check ebay for spare parts...
Thanks guys, I'll take those into consideration. It's not a pressing issue until something stops working, but it'll bother me until I do something about it...
Thank you!
In the UK, HTC Europe handle all hardware facia repairs, I had a new cover for my MDA Compact (HTC Magician) and it was only £20, and it looked like new.
Screens are much more expensive!
I'd expect there to be a similar setup in the US.

help me help you (:

alrightly well i got my refurb in the mail from aspurion, sprints insurance,
so i really would like to know is it against my insurance terms to take apart my phone?
i'd really like to make a screen replacement guide, as i'd rather replace my screen then replace my phone next time i crack the screen.
so any info would be great!

Somewhere in the breakdown process there will be a seal you have to break to get it open. If you can't remove that seal without breaking it then you've voided your warranty (even with insurance) and you will be paying for that phone after it gets back to Asurion. Best thing to do would have been to reported it as totally busted (ran over by a car? lol) and then after you make your disassembly guide you destroy it and send it back.

It is a simple white sticker over one of the lower screws. Easily taken off with a razor blade and put back on when you are finished. No one will be the wiser. I have done it twice and it was very simple. Good Luck.

$100 serviced Hd2 repair goes awry

I took my shattered glass HD2 in to replace the glass today at a local store. I was quoted $100 for the glass replacement. I thought, "hey excellent price. I'd rather pay a bill than ruin my phone by doing it myself." (I have fixed all my prior lcds on my phones just FYI) Needless to say about 5 hours later they tell me that due to the damaged state of the phone the lcd was affected as well from the jarring it took when it was shattered. Apparently there were was one large tear of the anti-glare coat on the top left hand side and two other areas where it was lifted as well.
I tried calling them out by saying the technician did not take the required precautions to avoid tearing the anti-glare coat on the lcd when separating the digitizer and lcd.
Unfortunately, I had the option of continuing as is or ordering an lcd screen from them for another $100. The owner who seemed pretty nice said he would try and see if he could get the price on the replacement lcd lowered. Personally, I believe I should not have to pay for the lcd since it was NOT damaged when I took it in.
I probably don't have any recourse though since they say it's a risk associated with this phone. I should have just bought the combo together and done it myself. That's what I get for trying to save a few dollars.
Would you gentlemen have any suggestions?
theres not really much you can do unless you just want to live with it. i was going to suggest getting a warranty replacement but realized it voids warranty when taken apart. if you want things done right DIY cant really rely on shops to do anything anymore..
That sucks. I'd want to be damn sure they are replacing the screen with a genuine article too.
Unfortunately you can't really prove that the membrane wasn't damaged prior to them touching the phone so it will be hard to get out of this one without forking out extra, however I suppose you could always politely threaten them with legal action and a public flaming on a busy internet forum if they don't want to play nice.
It's worked for me i nthe past when i've had issues with car servicing.
Warranty?

No warranty for physical damage to unit. Insurance would have covered it, if insurance was purchased? I did..
