GUIDE! your diamond or other wm6.1 device as the main internet access via your router

Hello This guide is made up from the knowledge i have build up from advice given on XDA and information on other sites.
I have found this very useful in my home and hope you do to.
First off, this guide explains everything you need to do to use your diamond as the access point to the internet at home for all devices. (PC's, PS3, XBOX360, Wii)
It is highly recommended that you have a unlimited data allowance!!!!! Otherwise you could have a hefty bill at the end of the month.
Right what you will need :
A Diamond with an unlimited data allowance tariff,
A WiFi router (i have used an old router that was installed with Tiscali BB)
WMWifiRouter version 0.80 (please find this your self i will not provide it)
and some basic knowledge of networking on PC's and your devices.
Thats it. Please don't be put off by the networking side of things its really easy to do.
Right first off we need to get your diamond taking to your router.
switch on your router and let it do its thing for 2-4 mins
Connect your diamond to the wifi router by switching on your wifi in settings, communications on touchflow, when prompted, connect to your router and enter your network key.
THIS IS THE SAME PROCESS AS CONNECTING TO A WIFI HOTSPOT.
Its that simple.
Next switch off your wifi in settings, communications.
Install WMWifiRouter version 0.80 (Simple and stable)
once installed open WMWifiRouter and press connect.
This should then setup your phone to be used as a access point and connect to your wireless network all at once.
Once it says connected you can turn off your phones main screen by pressing the off switch at the top and put your phone where there is best signal! HSDPA is needed to get up 7.2mbps (little H in signal area)
Right now you need to setup your laptop or device to talk to the phone via your router!
So here are the settings you need to setup in either TCP/IP (manual connection) or a manual connection on your device (PS3, Wii, XBOX360).
I will use a laptops connection as a example because all you need to do is to copy the settings to another device using a different IP address.
If you use wifi or a hardwired connection, right click the telly with the wifi connection in the bottom right of the screen and click open network connections (XP only dont know for vista), Or if the telly is not displayed in the bottom righthand cornner of the task bar then click start, control panel, network connections.
Click on the connection you wish to use i.e local area connection or wireless network connection (you can setup both connections by repeating these steps on each connection)
this should bring up a general tab of this connection, click properties.
This will bring up another box with the network properties, all you need to do is manually enter your IP settings and DNS settings so double click on "internet protocol [TCP/IP]"
Another box appears.
Click "use the following IP address"
In IP address type "192.168.0.xxx" xxx being the unique 3 digit code of your choice, write this down for your firewall settings on other devices if you run a networked drive etc. Each new device will need its own unique 3 digit code ie PC = 192.168.0.100, XBOX360 = 192.168.0.200, Wii = 192.168.0.123 etc.
In Subnet mask type "255.255.255.0"
In Default gate way type "192.168.0.1
Now click "Use the following DNS server address"
In preferred DNS server type "192.168.0.1"
Thats it, press ok and ok on any other boxes still left open.
Your network device will rest your IP and DNS settings to the ones you have just entered, thus allowing you computer to access the mobiles phones internet connection via your router
On all your devices Manually setup all your connections using these settings and they will all use your mobile phone to connect to the internet.
Using DHCP to configure your network is not advised as its unreliable at finding your phones connection.
Now if you want to start using your phone as a phone again, open up WMWifiRouter again if its not already and click options Quit.
To get internet access on other devices via your phone again all you need to do is to start WMWifiRouter and press connect. Start using the internet!!!
If you wish to use your laptop on another hotspot, you will need to reset the TCP/IP settings back to automatic, otherwise it will not work.
Using this process sometimes causes the phone to disable its own internet connection, so a soft reset after exiting WMWifiRouter is recommended.
Have fun, im sorry if its all a little messy but i have never been very good at writing these guides.

Yes i know you can connect your phone to your laptop by USB, Bluetooth, but this method allows multiple devices to use the same phone to access the internet at the same time and via a access point at the highest possible speed, so games consoles can use it!!! Brilliant if you get a good HSDPA signal and live in the country.
Oh one last thing! if you are a youngster and wish to try this, please do so on other equipment, don't use your family's main router and laptop or PC unless its no longer in use!!!

Its does work, In my home i no longer have a land line or cable broadband i just have one bill a month which is my phone bill of £41 including insurance on my device and i get every thing, i have saved my self a fortune per year doing this, that was my reason anyway hehe L8rs

I also havent tired it because i have broadband at home, but i am moving out soon and so will have a period of time where i have no internet so will use this guide.

Because the data going through the phone will really heat up the phone, as a side benefit you'll be able to use it as both a heater, and a stove until your appliances are hooked up.

I tried out wmwifirouter with my laptop and I must say it's quite slow compared to connecting the phone with USB and using internet sharing, any clue why? Nice guide btw, will be used when needed

your are correct, if you use WMWfiRouter directly with with your computer it does seem slow and you also get a lot of drop outs as well for that reason i stopped using months ago and was using bluetooth edr. But using this method respose times are much much quicker (to be honest i dont know why) and it is just as fast as using with USB, i know i have tested it. Im on orange UK, i get constant 1.6mbps down and 360kbps up with two bars connected the HSDPA network.
Im using it right now to reply to this thread, i got rid of my land lane and broadband connection because this is that stable and fast!
As for heating issues (poster above) once its connected and you turn off the screen, i have never had a issue. i even keep it in its HTC pouch in case it falls of the shelf its on lol.
The only problem i have come across which is more of a annoyance than anything is that when someone phones you it can slow your connection not always though, a soft reset fixes the issue.

Internet sharing dilemmas...

This is a 2-part dilemma...
1.) is there a way to use my Wi-fi and data plan as a gateway for internet access with the computers in my home? I want to be able to turn on the Wi-fi, and the phone will become an access point and its internet connection comes from my data plan... I guess this can be done with a T-mobile G1.
2.) the way I do it now is that I hook it up via USB to a computer, and that works pretty well. Problem is, if I disconnect it via software function on the phone or just yank the USB plug out, I have to re-boot my phone before the internet sharing will work again. This gets annoying. Anyone else experience this and/or know if there's a fix?
Or am I just dumb and want everything on a silver platter?

are these computers connect in a network. I am sure it can easily be done by internet connection sharing just have all the computers connect to your pc for a connection.

I thought about doing that--basically an internet share to an internet share. That WOULD work, but I was hoping for something a bit simpler. i am not a hardcore computer user like I was back in the day where I had to have at least 3 computers running 24/7 in order to cope with life. LOL. I was hoping for a setup where I can just walk in the door from a crappy day at work, plug my phone into the charger where it gets its best signal, and just leave it there and the rest will take care of itself. I am close to being able to do that with my Xlink bluetooth cellular gateway. Once I am home, there's no reason why I have to carry my phone around the house, as my hard-wired phones in the house ring through my cellular and I can make calls from them
The other option is to quit being a cheap turd and get a $30/mo internet connection for my computers, which is faster than the EDGE service I get here at home. But I live alone and don't download big stuff anymore or play multiplayer games, etc

I think the concept in question is one that has been batted around here for some time: Can the Kaiser be used as an access point with an internet connection?
As far as anyone's been able to tell, no. The phone's wifi chip(or part of a chip that does wifi) would need to support AP mode (access point mode) where in it receives and routes multiple wifi connections' data between each other and the GPRS hardware. As far as anyone's been able to tell, the wifi capabilities in the phone are limited to single-connection only, so allowing multiple devices to connect (or even 1, unless the desired device can get internet via adhoc or bluetooth) is not possible.

You can use the WiFi connection sharing. What it does is take your EDGE or 3G connection and set your phone up as an "access point". I put that in parenthesis because it creates an "ad-hoc" network that only certain devices can detect and connect to. Ad-Hoc is a device to device network, where the normal is infrastructure mode. Also being the device it is, I'm not sure if it's going to be an intelligent network device, IE.. iTunes music sharing between local connected clients. But you can most certainly share your connection with your laptops or desktops if they have WiFi. I'll see if I can find the cab for you and post it here.

Cool. I will look into that! I pretty much only have one computer running at a time these days, and the EDGE connection isn't all that fast to be sharing it among multiple computers anyway.

$ 30.00 for your phone data connection + $ 45.00 for your home cable/DSL connection = $75.00 per month, as opposed to just $30.00 for both.
To some people $ 45 dollars a month is a lot of money to save no matter how slow the connection is.

I am no expert but I found this software here a while ago and really liked it. There is an older version that is legally free but the new one is pay, try the trial.

Or you're like me and cant get anything but satellite internet where I live, which is way more expensive. Yet I get 3G just fine =)

WMWifiRouter
I like WMWifiRouter pretty well. It drains my battery like crazy, but when I have my phone plugged in, it's okay. Without being plugged in, my battery loses about 20% over ten minutes. Also, the free version doesn't really come with any admin features. The router is public and there's no way to see who's connected. Other than that, it's great!

How I got tethering to work (3 different type of methods)

Hey all, I been reading all kinds of methods to tether with the Nexus 5 (also during the Nexus 4 prime), and helped a couple of members here at XDA how I got to tether my T-Mobile's truly unlimited data with 5 GB sharing (it used to be 500, then 2.5GB, now 5GB) connection to my PS3, PC, and other smartphones. Many have PM'd me to explain it further for them how to get it to work, and I figured "I should just make a thread on how I got it to work". In this thread, I will explain to you how I got tethering to work on my phone using T-Mobile's service (it might work for At&T and other carriers). I will tell you the three apps I use and the pros and cons of each app when it comes to tethering a specific device.
Please note:I am not responsible for any consequences you will face with your carrier using my method, nor will I be held responsible if you use my method without having a sharing data plan. This method is for use of a sharing plan that YOU pay for. If you decide to use this method without having a sharing plan, then do what you want, it's your plan, and your money. I have spent a lot of time doing trial and error in order for my tethering to work 100%. I even went over my 5GB of sharing data and I still was able to tether. I think I know why, read the last paragraph of this post. Again, THIS IS FOR MEMBERS WHO PAID FOR TETHERING SERVICE.
Without further ado, you will first need to edit a database located in /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db. You need to add a new entry that is called "tether_dun_required" with a value of 0. Google and T-Mobile decided to team up and provide a way for T-Mobile to sniff what devices you are tethering to, thus sometimes redirecting you to the T-Mobile page saying you need to add a sharing plan. You can either edit the database with a sqlite app/program, or simply install the install zip (thanks to yakman66). There is an uninstaller if you wish to revert back. I have no idea if you should reflash the zip after you install a new ROM or update it, but I did it anyway. Now we get to the apps. The three apps I use to tether are PDANET+/Foxfi, Clockworkmod Tether, and WiFi Tether Router
PDANET+/Foxfi: Note: There is a free version of PDANET/FOXFI, but you will be kicked off the tethered connection every 20-30 minutes,and I believe there is an a limit of how much MB you share daily. Purchasing the app is only $7.97.
Download from Play Store. Link:PDANET Foxfi:Foxfi Foxfi for At&T and Sprint:Foxfi (Sprint/AT&T Only)
Please make sure you download the correct Foxfi for you carrier. PDANET is for connecting via USB and Foxfi is for bluetooth and wireless. You must install the PC program located here. This app is pretty much self-explanatory. You just set up the network name and password if you decide to use wireless, or plug your phone in PC via USB with PDANET+ for Windows installed.
Pros:
No need to root.
Tethering for your computer: Pretty much instant. Easy setup. Just to be safe install a user switch agent and change it to IE 7.
Tethering for gaming: Using my PS3, I am able to play online with my friends. I am running around 30-40 ms ping, which is not bad for wireless. Smooth.
Tethering for other smartphones and tablets: Easy setup also.
Cons:
You have to pay the app in order to use the app for its full potential.
Computer: For some reason, I get kicked off for a couple seconds from my tethered connection and then connected again. I even enable "Hide Tether Usage" on the options with Google DNS checked on the settings. I think because T-Mobile blacklisted Google DNS (idk?)
Gaming: Your NAT type will never be opened. That means if you join a party that also does not have an open NAT, expect not to be able to join that person. If anyone knows a way to port forward your carriers IP address, please let me know.
Smartphones and tablets: Haven't experienced nothing wrong.
WiFi Tether Router:
Download: WiFi Tether Router
Configure your Network Name SSID, encryption type (whatever works best for you, I use wpa2-psk)m WiFi password, and then enable the tether.
Pros:
Much cheaper than PDA/FOXFI. Only $2.50
There are more setups you can do for this app. You can change the interface, method, drivers, WiFi Mode. There are also tweaks especially for consoles like MTU adjust, enabling DMZ, DMZ Port Forwarding, and DCHP settings. Perhaps you can port forward and have your Nat open with this app, but I'm not expert when it comes to these, perhaps someone out there can find a solution? Let us know!
Computer: Haven't tested it to be honest. If someone is willing to try please let us know how it went.
Gaming: Easy setup. Works just as good as Foxfi
Smartphones and tablets: Works just as good as Foxfi
Cons:
You can only use wireless, there is no USB.
Gaming: Same as Foxfi, Nat is not open.
Smartphones and tablets: None.
Clockworkmod Tether:
Download from Play Store: Clockworkmod Tether (no root)
After that install the drivers of your phone located here
Last but not least, install the tether software on your computer.
Mac: http://download.clockworkmod.com/tether/tether-mac.zip
Linux: http://download.clockworkmod.com/tether/tether-linux.tgz
Windows: http://download.clockworkmod.com/tether/TetherWindowsSetup.msi
Once installed, allow debugging on your phone to PC via usb and start the tether connection.
Pros:
Free, you just need root.
Computers: I don't get kicked out whatsoever tethering on my PC. Not once did I get disconnected for a second and reconnected. Like I said as a precaution switch user agent to IE7.
Cons:
Gaming: Won't accept USB.
Smartphone and tablets: it only uses USB tethering.
So there you go guys, these are the apps I use to tether my devices. You can choose whatever works best for you. When it comes to me playing online or sharing my net to smartphones and tablets, I use Foxfi because it is simple to set up. WiFi Tether Router I just use it as a backup. When it comes to tethering my PC, I use clockworkmod tether because I don't get disconnected from my computer.
I have been using these apps since Nexus 4 and not one time I got temporarily banned from sharing my net. Well actually I did, but it was the first time I ever tried it. Ever since then, I was able to use my tethering to its full potential.I use my data to play online (my home net sucks), and I have not been flagged. Playing online does not consume a lot of data (about 20-30 mb an hour).Here are a couple of ways to keep using your tether without being flagged by your carrier.
1. DO NOT DOWNLOAD BIG FILES ON YOUR GAME CONSOLES. Guys, please use your home internet to update your console version or downloading a patch. As soon as you download a file on your console you will be flagged. I have not tried it with the new 5GB sharing limit but I have tried it on 2.5 and I immediately got flagged, even though I was not close to my sharing limit.
2. Don't download torrents or pronz on your PC using your data. If you want to do that, I suggest going on your phone and downloading it via your phones browser or torrent app. This way your carrier will know you are downloading straight from your phone and not from a tethered device.
Other than that, use your tether how ever you like, but with responsibility. Tethering to other smartphones and tablets seem to not red flag T-Mobile at all. I shared 10gb of data to my coworkers and all they do is stream Pandora and YouTube. I hope this will clear things up and hopefully there will be better alternatives, but I think these methods should let you use your tethering service.

Sort of confused here, I use the built in WiFi tethering in my non rooted nexus 5 on T-Mobile without issue. Why does one need this?

Wait, what?
I've never had an issue using native tethering in stock Android on my Nexus 5.
So, are you saying enabling Tethering & Hotspot in the Settings menu doesn't work for you, and apparently many others?

I use built in tethering with the hot spot fix. No redirects to T-Mobile.

You got tethering too work despite your network, you mean? The n5 tethers wireless, bluetooth, wired, perfectly. The restrictions of your data plan or network are another thing that is nothing to do with an unlocked n5

Using PDAnet With Galaxy S7

I installed PDAnet on my Galaxy S7 using USB tethering and it worked Great
Then I tried Bluetooth and and paired PDAnet on my phone with PDAnet on my laptop
it worked even better, as if I was using WiFi
Try it out guys no root needed, no DSL codes
Downloaded at junefabrics.com
I would like root hate the bloating.

I haven't tried the bluetooth feature yet. I use the USB tether because of the internet share feature when using USB and the PDAnet software on my laptop. I still need WiFi for other devices such as my TV and Rand McNally Truck GPS. PDAnet was a big save for me when I could not root.
Do you have any connection drops using bluetooth? I lose bluetooth connection to my speaker system about once a day.

Yes.. I have notice connection drop using Bluetooth. Not sure why? If I need phone charge I use USB tether. Your right WiFi has other benefits like for multi devices. I'm a big fan of WiFi but Bluetooth or USB tether will do for now.
I rarely use WiFi on Rand McNally Truck GPS. I use my phone app to stay up to date with the weather.

Did you know that if you use USB Tether on PDAnet that you can use the WiFi Share (beta) on the PDAnet software on your computer. It seems to work very well. Only problem I have had is it shows up for bluetooth as an option also, but I can't seem to get it to work with bluetooth. I get an error 19.
edit: I just got WiFi sharing to work with BT. Had to reboot the computer.

Awesome!! I just tried it and it work. I connected my Rand McNally truck GPS thru WiFi Share (beta) using USB tether than I tried BT and WiFi Share on my laptop worked as well. Now we have USB Bluetooth and WIFI using only PDAnet.

Did you take the update that came out the 29th (I think)? What software version are you running?

I don"t think so... Software Version is G930PVPU1APB5, Android version 6.0.1, Android Security Patch Level Feb. 1 2016. I hope that helps you any.

Ok. The most recent version is G930PVPU2APC5. This update locked down the apn settings. It would be interesting to hear if anyone on the current software version can still use pdanet for wifi hotspot.

I took the update and PDAnet still works. PDAnet does nothing with the APNs. Instead you have to install PDAnet on both the phone and PC. The wifi hotspot is on the PC side using PDAnet software to do the share.

Yes. Usb tether works this way. And to tether through a pc and use the pc to create wifi. However, pdanet will also activate the native wifi hotspot capabilities of the phone itself. When I open pdanet+foxfi and hit "Activate wifi hotspot" it turns on the wifi hotspot of my phone. No pc involved.

You are correct the FoxFi part of PDAnet does have WiFi but it only works for us if we are paying for the hotspot and it then uses our allocated hotspot data. ie. I pay for 6gb a month and it will use that up. With that being the case I might as well just use it directly from the phone and not use FoxFi. If you are not paying for hotspot I do not believe it will work. If I'm wrong I'd like to know though.

You're right. It's been so long since I have used an non rooted phone. Been getting free hotspot for years. Right now I have altered my apn settings for the free hotspot.

I tried to activate Wifi hotspot PDAnet on the phone but it gave me "Hotspot Error" You are not subscribed to the Hotspot Service. Fail to activate Hotspot. Me paying an extra monthly fee for Wifi is not going to happend. This is why we need root among other things. If your Hotspot Wifi is activated on your phone then there is no need for PDAnet

It seems to have the same problem regular hotspot does for me after update. Keeps asking me to purchase plan. Have to reboot and quickly turn on. Glad that works our I'd be sol. Anyone else have a reliable method? My APN settings are locked out also now.

I tried to activate Wifi hotspot PDAnet on the phone but it gave me "Hotspot Error" You are not subscribed to the Hotspot Service. Fail to activate Hotspot. Me paying an extra monthly fee for Wifi is not going to happend. This is why we need root among other things. If your Hotspot Wifi is activated on your phone then there is no need for PDAnet

Even if paying for Wifi, PDAnet does still help (not with wifi but with USB or BT tether) by not using up are allotted data. I go through my allotted data rather quickly. I'm an over the road driver and use internet for many things to include weather on my truck gps, normal things such as email and system updates, and for entertainment (Games and movies).

I'm OTR myself and I know what you mean. I use my laptop for everything its my entertainment system. TV, movies, software, games I rely heavily on tethering my laptop with my phone. I even D/L movies and save them for later where there is no Internet like the Rockies. Thumbs up for PDAnet 2 thumbs up when root is here.

I'm thoroughly aggravated. I have Boost mobile plan with a hotspot. As I live on a houseboat, it's very important to me and 8gb isn't enough. A Boost rep gave me foxfi info. But I get error that my provider won't allow hotspot so I must tether or bt. Now I downloaded foxfi on ex who has Boost but not a hotspot. He can use the option of Foxfi hotspot,tether, or bt. I'm thinking of buying separate phone just for this.

Please verify with me is foxfi working with sprint gs7? I am thinking of upgrading and need to know what phone to get. please advise, anyone?

I am the same. Not so much movies, but all sorts of software. If I had to rely on my laptop for visual entertainment as well, I don't think it or me could handle it. I already fill up 5 virtual desktops, switch between windows and Linux and would punch my own mother in face for, like, 500% more screen space, or even just the ability to lower the dpi or increase the resolution past 1366x768... But currently, even with an alfa 36N and 9dBi antenna, the WiFi here is just plain ****. The burger King WiFi accross the street is better, but I can't can never get the login page to come up. so my phone is my sole Internet source.
I will say one thing, I really regret going with the nougat beta. I've been meaning to revert back so I can reroot because the Hotspot was unlimited and much more stable. That and the beta is super sluggish, at least for me. Some of the newer features were cool, but not nearly worth giving up root. But I let it get to the point where backing up and making the switch back will be an a 6 hour engagement, and I keep putting it off.

Setting up chromecast without WiFi

So I'm in the army right now, which means there's a TV but no WiFi available.
I did think of just setting up a Hotspot with another phone but it gets pretty annoying having to have 2 people at all time.
So I went digging in the Internet and found someone at a random forum (can't find it now for credit..), that said that If you set up the Hotspot in your own phone and configure it with another one you don't need the other one around anymore - being the Hotspot works as being connected to it.
Now I'm pretty sure there shouldn't be any reason I couldn't set it up on my own phone (the hotspot), except the Google home app just demands I connect to the WiFi network, which I can't do because you can't connect to yourself sadly.
I think if someone made some changes to the Google home app, or made an alternative set up app it could work. I have no idea how to code an app, so I came here ?
tl:dr I Want an app that does the same as the home app for setting chromecast up, but without checking if I'm connected to a WiFi network. (I think)

I'm guessing that you have no WiFi but you do have a hard line internet connection?
The only issue with what I'm going to suggest is that base rules may prohibit creating a WiFi access point on any of their hardline connections.
But the best solution for you is to buy a Portable Router (see posts here about using CCast in a Hotel).
It's a small box about the size of a DC transformer that plugs into the outlet and also any Network to create a small footprint WiFi access point.
I suggest looking for a model that also has Repeater mode that allows it to connect to another WiFi access point to create your own private network as opposed to a hard line.
It is probably the best way to use a CCast in places where WiFi is not available without having to play with Phone Hotspot which doesn't always work due to the fact the hotspot can't control the CCast in that mode.
The other Option that is most likely to be allowed is to add a WiFi puck to your Mobile account. Then there would be no potential compromising of the Military network (which is why they might not allow the Portable Router to be used) and you would no longer need two phones to run the CCast.
CCast definitely needs Internet so that Puck might be the safest and best way forward for you.
As for what you read...The issue is that if the Phone goes out of range it stops working.

Actually, no Internet at all, just mobile data, but since I got 15 gigs it's OK for me to use it.

To be honest, it is a good idea but my I was mainly wondering if I could solve it via software which is both easier obviously and also I just wanted to know if it's actually possible since I thought of it and I wanna know if I got it right

Not really...All the hacks and such that people try simply don't work well due to the fact that the Phone can't really connect to the same subnet as the Hotspot. When you go into Hotspot mode you can't also connect to that hotspot internally because WiFi is no longer available to the phone.

That's why i suggested tempering with the app so it treats being a Hotspot as if u were with WiFi on connected to one.
Basically take off the check for being connected to WiFi.

The issue isn't the app...It's the fact that the WiFi in your phone can only do one thing at a time....BE an Access Point or CONNECT to an access point.
It can't connect to itself as the radio can't do both things at once.
So when you go into hotspot there is no way to get on the same subnet as the hotspot with the phone.
Because there is no network adapter available to connect to it. It is too busy being an access point.
Basically going into hotspot turns the Phone into a router. A router the phone has no way to connect to. So you either need another device to connect to that phone router or find some other router with internet.
Which is what the Cellular Puck will give you.

Like I said, once the setup is done, being the Hotspot is just like being connected to is. The app still doesn't recognize you're connected but if you're on the web the chromecast icon does pop up when needed, all the third party apps do recognize you as being connected.

All you managed to do with Google Home (which can't be edited by anyone but Google)on the second phone is connect your CCast to the Phone Hotspot for it's Internet. There is no way to avoid that setup....HOWEVER...
As long as you don't set it up to connect to some other Hotspot there is no need to run Home again, Just turn on Hotspot and it should reconnect.
It will even remember the password,

Yea I know, but sometimes friends take it or something and it's a pain in the ass to explain everything, and even when I do it means I gotta reconnect at my end again which is annoying just thought someone could maybe find a solution that sounded really simple for me, guess not, too bad..

Well trying to recode Home is a dead end....Android wouldn't even let you install it!
You guys should just chip in and buy the puck.
It will even let you use Tablets and Laptops as well as simplify the CCast use.

I know this is an older post; not sure if you are still interested. I read all the replies and not sure what to make of it as far as if anyone had a working solution or not. No disrespect to anyone, but I couldn't tell for sure so I'm posting a link to my solution which does work. The two important steps are included. One is using " other wifi" in the drop down list when searching for your hotspot. The second is enabling GUEST MODE.

I’m trying something similar with a Chromecast 3rd gen and iPhone 5S (iOS 12). Main issue seems to be guest mode doesn’t work at all on any apps, and pretty much every solution i’ve seen to this results in guest mode being used for the eventual casting. If you have android or iOS 13 then ymmv.
The only solution i’ve found are workarounds, the obvious being
1) don’t buy a chromecast (it’s not much of a solution but hey it’s $30).
2) use a secondary device to cast.
3) use a tethered travel router, and this can be done with only a phone and mobile data for internet, but there’s a catch:
First i’d Recommend any router by GLi.net (cheapest “mango” router is about $20) as they support iOS and android and both WiFi and usb tethering.
Also, i’ve Tried using a WiFi hotspot on the phone, and it’s the same issue - no connection to the chromecast regardless of how. However... iPhones will allow you to create a hotspot using *only* cables usb tethering, so if you set the router up to *only* accept internet via cables tether (turn off WiFi/repeater tethering), then you can have both the chromecast and iPhone connect to the routers WiFi, whilst providing net access to the router (and WiFi network) from the same iphone’s mobile data via usb. Simple howoto:
Important: Turn OFF WiFi on the phone, and turn off hotspot.
Connect phone to router via usb, accept trust settings.
Turn on personal hotspot, you’ll get a message asking whether to use WiFi or just usb (andbluetooth if it’s also turned on). Select just usb/Bluetooth.
Wait until blue connection bar shows on phone (if not, make sure routers setup properly to gain net via usb tethering).
Now, turn on WiFi on the phone, and connect to routers WiFi.
Setup chromecast as normal, selecting to connect to routers WiFi too.
Note turning hotspot off and on again whilst WiFi is running will start a hotspot on WiFi and disconnect you from router WiFi, so you’ll always have to go through process of turning WiFi off, turn hotspot on, turn WiFi on.
So you can do this with the right router and a usb connection to phone. Or maybe android and working guest mode. Otheriwse, ...fire tv anyone?
