HSDPA Enable/Disable with AT&T - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hey everyone. I live in a fairly rural area but work in Atlanta. Would there be any benefit to disabling HSDPA battery wise? In the office the only connection I seem to get is Edge and at home I get 3g (Ironically)

Install Schap's Communications Manager. It has a button to turn off 3G services. You can also enable the selection if you use Advanced Configurator 3.3.

Schaps fails with insufficient permissions.
EDIT: Advanced config installed ok after the comm manager didnt so I am good to go, thanks.

funny, 2 responses (now three) but no answer to your question. I'm curious too. How much does 3g drain the battery more than Edge?

Comm Manager that has 3G toggle on/off, available?

Hey everyone, I just flashed the HTC Kaiser ROM on my Tilt and it works wonderfully, big thanks to pof and others who are making these type of things possible, donations are on the way by dinner time this evening, I give u my word!
From past experience with the TyTN, having 3G connection on at all times as opposed to just EDGE, seriously kills battery life. So I thought I could just go to the comm manager and toggle 3G off, but the option is not there. There's a Data Toggle on/off, but that seems to turn off my data connection all together. I just want the phone to use EDGE for periodically checking emails, and to use 3G when I need that type of bandwith(eg, Skype and web surfing). Is there anyway for me to have that 3G Toggle on/off switch again? It just now hit me that the ROM I was using at the time was a cooked ROM, so it might not be available until the great chefs get there properly tools.
Hmm....I was just wondering, any help on this is greatly appreciated.
DHR Bandswitch works perfekt on my Kaiser

Is there a way to get the Band Page to display on phone settings? The registry settings from the Hermes don't seen to work.
at&t tilt - stock ROM
The Advanced Configuration tool allowed me to use the 3G switch instead of the PTT setting on the Comm Manager. It doesn't have any icons though. :-(

Also if you read some of the msgs, you'll find how to use it.
I think that here is what you want.

Niiccee....that's the one. Actually, I started using the JUV comm manager that's also found on that link, thank I appreciate the help.
Or you could use start/settings/phone/band and switch "select your network type" from Auto to GSM.
This will stop 3G working until you switch back to auto!

Hi there,
I am not sure if this is due to the German MDA Vario III Rom, but indeed if you go to Communcations Manager and you can switch the Data Connection On and Off, but even better, if I go to "Settings", then "Phone Settings" I have a Tab what says "Band" and there I am able to use "Auto" (GSM/EDGE and UMTS) or GSM/Edge.
Again, this is to be found on the German MDA Vario III ROM.
Cheers

No Band page by default on the Tilt. Registry settings from Hermes (or Advanced Configuration) do not work on the Tilt.
Still hunting for how the hell you do this on the Tilt.

Why don't you just flash with the HTC Rom assuming this one has the "Band Tab"?
Mike
The 10 button with 3g in this link seems to work as well.
EDIT: You'll need the registry fix for Wifi for this to work. Details here.

Not ready to take the leap yet. Want to see how others do with it first. Also, there will be several excellent Hermes cooks flocking this way to cook for the Kaiser - some who specialize in starting with the at&t base ROMs.
Plus i would like to learn the differences in registry settings between the two.

So far I like Schen's 10 button comm manager the best.

help with getting 3g workin again

hey guys, i'm using one of dutty's 6.0 roms, and when i first started using it, i opened the comm manager and turned off the 3G. once i did that the comm manager doesnt even have that 3G icon anymore. now i'm using a friends sim card to tether, and i cant seem to get 3G on. its pretty crappy tethering w/edge, so if somebody can help me i'd appreciate it, thanks
omar
Haven't got my phone in front of me, but if you go into Start > Settings > Phone, there's an option in there for Network connection which can either be set to Auto or GSM/GPRS . This is all the 3G button in the Comm Manager does (Auto is 3G on, GSM is 3G off).
Sorry if the directions are a little vague, I'm doing this from memory and it's been a while since I had a Comm Manager without the 3G button!
Of course, if your friend's SIM or account isn't 3G-enabled, then whatever you do to your phone won't work!!

H, 3G or E

There used to be a mod that kept the phone on E always (for battery saving purposes) until data was required or being used, then it would switch to H automatically. Does that exist for the Tilt? I had it on my old 8525....
thanks

Perhaps I mis-understand what you mean but here goes... I am not aware of such a mod.
The handset can be operated in GSM (2G) or UMTS (3G). Potentially faster data connection speeds are available (at possibly higher battery drain) when you use the 3G mode (if available to you) - in this case when a 3G connection is available it may be possible to use the HSDPA data connection (automatically demanded by your hanset only when data is required) but that depends upon: whether you have that service available from your providers masts, whether they have enabled for you it and also whether your handset has the HSDPA setting enabled.
On the other hand only GPRS or EDGE (see wiki here) may be available when a 2G/GSM connection is available. EDGE is basically an enhanced version of GPRS but does not match HSDPA speeds.
So you are mixing the EDGE data indication "E" with the HSDPA indication of "H". The only way your handset can go from EDGE to HSDPA (or vice versa) is if your signal received changes to provide HSDPA from EDGE (perhaps as you change location).
Of course you can disable both 3G and seperatly HSDPA - then you are left with either G or E (use the comm manager and/or the various tweakers).
Beware - some ROMS are incorrectly showing the H instead of 3G when no data connection is active and this is a known problem.
Probably too much detail but may help .

He needs a program to switch between those modes automatically instead of manually though the comm manager, when he enables/disables a data connection..

yeah, that is right.
You know what I do. I use Kaiser Tweak or AdvancedConfig to tell it to Disconnect my 3G connection after 3 minutes. Then When a program needs Data it connects to The 3G network, than when It doesn't need it it disconnects after 3 minutes. Phone still works otherwise. And My battery lives for days.

Let's see if I get this..
You want to run the handset in 2G (GSM) mode for normal voice comms but when you want data you want to switch to 3G (UMTS) so that HSDPA can be used?
I personally haven't seen anything that can do that automatically and understand the problem is that to change from one band to another actually requires a cycle off of the actual phone. There are plenty of programs out there that cycle the phone mode - perhaps you should put this requirement to Dani who has developed a Comm Manager Pro program - his software does this cycling of modes but based upon time and place (for instance) rather than the trigger that you want which is when a data connection is required. Try looking at this http://www.commmgrpro.com/ and asking Dani who is always on this site with the Hermes forum here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299070
Good luck .
Gotta be careful forcing the phone to Edge/HSDPA. Particularly if you force it to HSDPA.
I took a 2 hour road trip today and it took me coming back to figure out why my phone wasn't even getting a signal; it was forced to 3G. I set it to Auto in BandSwitch and it had a signal immediately.
Whoops!
speaking of road trips and HSDPA...
i took a trip today with my wife to Washington and had perfect signal the entire time.. until my battery died of course.
but HSDPA all the way..
i live in Jersey and have travelled to the NYC, the UK and Puerto Rico and have yet to get bad reception...with my old blackberry... im damn near posivtive i woulda had lag

i manually control my data connection through comm manager. i always have 3g off too on comm manager. However, my battery sucks ass and it doesn't last longer than 18hrs with normal use. However, my backlight is at full blast because i can't see the screen outdoors if i don't have it set to 100%. Wish i could see the screen outside during the day and i wish the battery life lasted longer.

I usually cup my hand to act as a shade around the screen. I can see the screen well enough at the 3rd lowest setting.

Have you noticed any kind of lag in your device when using the AdvancedConfig auto disconnect feature? I "feel" that when I have this feature turned on the device lags a bit. So instead I have the long press end key mapped to terminate data connection and I end up having to hit that so many times during the day.
Hello
This is sort of on the same lines. I use the com manager built into the custom rom im using ( L26_Kaiser_Diamond_V9 ) and throttling back from a 3G/HSDPA connection to the Edge signal. Ive noticed a huge difference battery life. Before i would only get about 4-5 hours standby because I had an application running that kept the HSDPA active previously. If you use a messenger service like IM+ I strongly suggest upgrading to a rom like L26 that has the ability built right into its com manager. It more than doubled my battery life with 0 cost to messaging performance. If i have to hop onto the net or tether, its a simple button switch to re-enable 3g

How configure Comm Manager - 3G Button needed

Hi,
I installed the original HTC Kaiser WM6.1 ROM yesterday.
Everything works fine, but in the Comm Manager I have no Button to activate and deactivate the 3G.
I use Pushmail, and it is very fine to push only via GPRS, because the battery works with this option much longer.
Is it possible to configure the Comm Manager to get the 3G-Button?
Karl
I tried now Schaps AdvancedConfig 2.1 to enable the 3G Button. Now I see this button, but I do now have an image for this button. I only see the text "3G".

Hi Guys,
Ok I want to completely disable any 3g connection and GPRS connectivity if possible, how do I go about doing this as I have dried to locate options but only found HSPDA on of switch. The only option in the comms that is set to on is phone.
Any help would be appreciated as this is really annoying me. Thanks in advance.

Program nodata will provide your needs.
Search forum and you wil find it.
Grtzzz
Start|Settings|Phone|Band set network to GSM.
Start|Settings|Connections|Manage existing connections|Delete existing connection
You could also try Nadavi 's Improved Comm manager..
so u can switch between Auto modus (3G) and GSM only.
Thanks guys, managed to disable all connections. Its a bit annoying that the 3g or GPRS connections are always active, bills are becoming abit of a nightmare lol. Once again Thanks!
Regards
Shadow
