charge port cracked - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hey Guys,
so i bought my phone in december online and it worked great. I love the phone and think its an unbelievable investment. But just last week, I tried to plug in my mini-usb upside down and I cracked the small chip that the miniusb plugs into.
The phone does not charge, and seems pretty much ruined. I tested alternate batteries and went to the at&t store and they said that because its cracked it wont charge.
Does anyone know of any reasonably priced repair centers? Or has anyone ever had experience just shipping it back to them and getting a new one?
I called them and said it would cost $300 to repair, cost me $250 to buy....
Thanks a lot,
Greg

Search -- there's a place in the US that will repair it for about $80

The same thing happend to my tilt. I would recomend you try charging it using the adapter. It seems the adapter aligns the pins on the mini USB port.
Hope this helps.

There is always the option of getting a second batter and a cradle to charge it I have one just so i can take the spare battery on the go
Here is a good example of what to look for
Its not a fixed USB port but this should get you back in business. Also, If you have Hard-SPL , you dont need the USB port to flash or mod another rom. Just use the Micro-SD card. Its faster and easier anyway
Hope this helps

Excellent repair work from: www.ppctechs.com
I've had two tilts repaired.

I need some assistance (Battery Problems)

I'll start from the top, I broke my phone's screen so I had it replaced by HTC. I shipped the phone (without a battery) to HTC like they wanted and got a new phone back. I installed "HD_III_BlackStone WWE" rom, and it worked fine for about 4 days or so. but eventually it wouldn't charge, I figured my battery was finally shot so I bought a new one, it worked fine for awhile but now it won't charge at all.
my computer doesn't even recognize my tilt, never says anything is connected. it does have the checkbox unchecked for computer charging, so that should be fine.
and I've tried 2 different computers with 3 different cables, as well as my car charger and 2 wall chargers =/
I've searched around but I haven't found any information regarding this, I have a feeling my car charger might've some how killed my USB port on my phone.
can anyone point me in the right direction on this? I am pretty tech savvy but I just don't know where to start troubleshooting this any deeper.
any help will be greatly appreciated, i'll be checking this frequently.
Some options

Maybe this stickied WARNING: Active Brodit Carkit thread in the Kaiser accessories forum may be of some assistance. What car charger kit have you got? Of course your replacement Kaiser should have a warranty as long as it has an official configuration. Without a working USB port you'll have difficulty restoring the original configuration as not all required steps can be done with the microSD card method - one of the risks with running custimised ROMs on devices still under warranty. If you have that particular car charger then maybe you can get some comeback from that company and a cheap Kaiser battery charging cradle will keep you going in the mean time - it just means swapping batteries to charge them. You can still use bluetooth for activesync (buying a dongle for the PC if reqd).
Thank you so much for the reply... I'll have to do the MicroSD way then, thankfully i have one finally.
but I'm not using a Brodit Carkit, the issue seems identical though so that's probably why isn't it? =/
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=448467
give this a read and hope it works sounds better than above
nope, I researched as best as I could and thats not the issue either, the first reply seems correct.
I get no indication that its charging or connected through my PC or phone, that includes lights
nothing changes.
what kind of cradle will charge just the battery?
Clarification

My point about that is you WONT be able to fully restore everything via the microSD card method - the SPL reversion has to be done using the USB connection.

Well whatever version you are using, if you check your port for physical damage as maxblaster linked to and thats all clear then hopefully your car kit supplier will be some help. At least the methods I suggested (battery charge cradle and bluetooth activesync) are cheap workarounds that can keep you going in the mean time. Good luck

I wanted to post a picture of one at the XDA-DEV shop (out of loyalty to this website) but cant find it anymore.
If you google Kaiser charging cradle you should find some results that have a flat recess at the back and that come with a mains adapter, the idea being you put a spare battery in the back, plug it in to the mains and it'll charge that battery. They also have a dished recess for the phone itself but you don't have to use that part to charge a battery. I have one of these devices and highly reccommend them for Kaiser users (along with a spare battery or two) as the devices are very battery hungry if you want to take advantage of all the features. PM me if you're still stuck and I can point you to a link.
thank you so much, looked around and ordered one
i appreciate all the help you've given me.
PS HTC is freaking trying to say they never repaired my phone

You're welcome. It sounds like HTC didn't repair your phone, they replaced it instead but I'd assume any replacements they provide would still be warrantied, even if only for a short period. The problem is you've customised it's ROM and while it's not in exactly the same ROM/Radio/SPL state as they supplied it to you in (or using an approved HTC 'upgrade' ROM) then they don't need to honour a warranty (restoring what you can would give you the best chance). If it is your car phone charger that was responsible for the damage then why not contact the supplier with your complaint.

[Q] mini USB jacked

Back in September I found my USB cable no longer fits snugly and will fall out of the Hero's mini USB port unless I position the phone on an angle. Has this happened to anyone else, and if so were you able to fix it? I don't feel like sending it in for repairs, and as much as I'd like to upgrade there doesn't seem to be any new phones I'm set on until Q1 2011.
Any help?
yes, this has happened to me... the problem is with the 'cheap' cable youre using... get another one (cable)... the jack on the phone is fine... gl, h.
I found a random mini USB cable and it seems to fit much better but not perfect. I plan on selling my phone back to best buy when a new phone I want comes around so I'll need a new cable, luckily I found an OEM replacement for cheap online.

[Q] Charging plug broken

Last july, I took my Milestone on a hike and fell on it, breaking the glass. I sent it for repairs and got it back after a nice 120$ bill.
When it came back, the charging plug was loose, but still worked well. Considering this was my only phone (I'm in an appartement without landline), only MP3, acted as my agenda, adress book and GPS, and that I knew that sending it back in would take another 4-6 weeks, I decided to keep it anyways. It was still charging, right?
Well it progressively got looser, and now it won't charge unless it's in the dock, at a certain angle forward, and the 1-year guarantee ended 3 weeks ago... So it's useless as a GPS, and I have to mess with it for a minute everytime I plug it in to make sure it's at the right angle...
Besides sending it back to Motorola, waiting 6 weeks and paying 120$ (again), does anyone else have found a solution to this issue? Is this a part that can be bought myself and replaced by someone skilled?
Thanks!
PS: Here in Quebec, the Consumer Protection Law states that a product should be covered for a reasonable time period... I'm thinking of putting pressure on them by saying that a reasonable time period would be the length of the contract with the carrier, and so that they should repair/replace it under guarantee. Opinions on that?
Buy a battery charger off eBay, they are cheap

I'm talking about the charging port. The microUSB on the phone itself.
He knows, thats still what I would do. You also need a microUSB reader or use wifi to transfer stuff.
If its loose, then it may be just a torn wire, not my forte in small electronics.
If its 120, buy another one. You can get one off ebay cheap, or get one for parts.
Well, the phone just completely died, and won't power on at all-no matter what's the battery I used. I guess that won't be necessary now, lol.
Well, you should take it to repair, maybe you battery has died and some one need to weak-up it.
IMHO is better then buying another one.
I would do what the second poster was sayin and by a battery charger put it to good use again.

Possibly dead USB port

Arg.
So my otherwise adorable 1 year old somehow got his hands on my Captivate this weekend. When we finally caught him, he was chewing and slobbering on it pretty much right where the USB port is. After getting the phone back out of his grubby little hands, my wife and I took it completely apart and have had the whole works soaking in rice for a day or so.
When I put it back together, it booted just fine, and everything seems to be in working order. Except...when I plug a cable into the USB port, it doesn't charge, and it doesn't connect to my computer for storage mounting/flashing. This would be a bit of a problem.
I've checked for obstructions in the port itself and there don't seem to be any. I can get by for now without charging because my wife and I have the same phone (so we can periodically swap batteries...), but she's leaving town for two weeks at the end of this week. I really don't want to have to buy a new phone...so any ideas on fixing this would be greatly appreciated.

Once the USB port is gone its gone, you would need to get an external wall charger for it and a wifi file browser.
there might be some moister in it yet, but generally the captivates had issues with the USB port just flaking out like that. Its a common problem for this phone, and also has happened to mine.
Or you can just pay ~35$ to get it fixed, look in my sig. They are good!

Hmm...I didn't even realize that was an option. I'll be looking into that. Thanks!
They fixed mine and it works great. I would also order a new cable from them for like 7 bucks. It is all well worth it!
interesting, didnt know about that one either
Update:
It's apparently not *quite* as dead as I thought. It's still not recognizing my computer or telling me that it's charging...but apparently it is actually charging my battery. I plugged it into my computer just to see and left it. It never said that the phone is charging, but when I came back a few minutes later the battery meter had gone up, and it's still doing that fairly consistently.
That's at least good news for now. Even if the USB transfer is dead, I'm still OK as long as I can charge. As long as I don't have to use download mode...
That sounds like a bad cable, just buy one of those first, cheaper and easier to check!

It's nothing to do with the cable. We have four USB cables and two different car chargers. It's the same thing with all of them, and they all work perfectly on my wife's phone.

My first Captivate had a USB port go bad.. I tried 10 different cables and decided for some reason it was a ROM issue and got into download mode.. well let's just say I was buying another Captivate the next day.. lol
I did resurrect it by buying a Captivate with a broken screen on Ebay cheap. Combined the two and it's actually a later production and the GPS works good compared to hardly at all before. M yold screen and new guts.. Now I have a spare phone to try new Roms on without messing up my daily driver.. (Dark Knight 4 atm)
I see broke screen Captivates for $40-80 on Ebay regularly..
My wife also has a captivate with a dead USB port. So I went on amazon and searched for captivate batteries and external charger and found a package that came with 2 extended life batteries and the wall charger that charges one separatly from the phone while you use the other in the phine . Its made by Laza wireless and both batteries and charger was 15.99 and shipped free. Got it in two days and works great and was a whole lot cheaper than a phone.

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread but, I have had the same problem for months also caused by a toddler sucking on the phone and cables. I swap batteries daily. stock/1800/2430 mah. I am curious if anyone knows of a wireless charging option. I know my wii batteries are inductive and it is just the new battery and charger on a stock remote. is there an inductive charger and battery available for cappy? is wireless charging dangerous to the phone if it wasnt designed with it in mind? for that matter is anything available for anyother phones besides the lumia 920 and maybe nexus I think?
cheapest, best option is to get the USB port repaired by mobiletechvideos.com, imho.
I know of no induction solution for captivate that works without a good usb port.
I figured and also thought the Cappy wouldn't be a device supported by a new battery developer when there is so many newer ones out.
Thx

[HELP] TouchPad fallen down. now not charging.

My touchpad was in a bicycle and was getting charged. My cousin placed the TP on a bicycly after the battery is about 43% and was charging.
He accidently shaked the bicycle and the touchpad was falled from the bicyle in the position where the charging port is connected.
Now it shows charging, but not charging. I plugged the charger at 41% and it came to 37% after 15-30 mins with the charger plugged.
Please help. Any DIY work that can fixthe touhpad or make the touchpad charge?
Thanks
Helps are appreciated.
Invest in a touchstone wireless charger. After the USB port went bad on one of my previous touchpads, it was a no brainer.

What do you think about the problem? Can I fix it in some local shops? How much do they ask?
Thanks for your INFOs.
With a donor tablet, you could probably have it fixed. In my opinion, unless its a 32gb, 4g, or 64gb model, its cheaper to just replace it. When I sold my 64gb with all the extras, I was disappointed to see how low the value had dropped. Personally I would go the touchstone route, and in the meantime, find a cell phone repair shop that isn't afraid of surface soldering and have the connector replaced. No idea on costs, but the microusb connector is about a 3$ part. Only problem would be if the PCB was cracked, thus my thoughts on a donor tablet to just swap the sub board assembly with USB port.

Ok now imagine that i am in a cell phone repair shop. I tell the repairing man that the tablet has fallen down with the charging position downwards and now its not charging. Will he fix the problem? Time duration as my father needs it in 4-5 hrs.

You are from Chennai right? Go to any cell phone repair shop and ask them to fix charging port. It is a common problem in phones, and they might even have spare microUSB ports. I repaired one in Mumbai when I was there in Jan, and since I just re-soldered my existing port, and already had the unit open, AND I knew the repair guy, he only charged me Rs. 30 (~50 cents ), ONLY for soldering.
But if you don't want to open the touchpad on your own, and dont want to mess around, you can expect them to fix it for something like Rs. 200-300.
If they ask for more, tell them it is a cheap made in china (sorry, no offense intended) replica and you didn't even pay too much for it People usually don't know about Touchpads here.
You can also try those small shops that repair TVs or Radios, sometimes they also repair for cheap.

Thank you sir. You saved my life. I went to a shop and gave a 350 Rs and repaired. I said it as a china replica as you mentioned but he said that the quality is like a U.S or U.K made. So, He got the money mentioned above. Again Thank you so much.
