GPS - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

I recently got a Touch Diamond and am using it without the data plan. I know this has been asked a bunch but I have yet to find a good definitive answer. What is the best way to get GPS without using the data plan?
I understand that TomTom and Garmin are probably the best ways to go, but I would like to do this as cheap as possible as I'm a grad student (therefore not a whole lot of disposable income) and likely won't be using it a ton (therefore can't justify spending much money).
Are there any good free (or very cheap) applications that would work with the internal GPS and give turn-by-turn directions without using data minutes?
If not, what do you guys think about TomTom Navigator 6? How out-of-date are the maps since Navigator 7 is out? I can get the Navigator 6 CD for about $30. Would this be a good route to go? Can you install Navigator 6 from the CD to the Diamond?
Any input would be welcome.
Thanks!!!

TomTom Maps Got One Now What?

So I have gotten my one free TomTom map and now I need some more maps. The only option seems to be purchasing the full $149 DVD version by mail? That is terrible, they should make city maps available for purchase and download at a reasonable price, like $10.00 per city or something. So is my only option to spend $149 and wait for them to ship me a DVD?
I just ordered, from Amazon, the US & Canada DVD for $92 plus shipping. Mind you it's used, but it's rated at very good by the seller who is an Amazon subsidiary. Unless the DVD is scratched, it should work fine. I'll take my chances and see.
That's another option for you.
Where did you guys get the software for TomTom? I looked on Amazon and it was $143 for the software plus maps.
He mentioned that he got it used from Amazon. If you look at product pages many times they also list sellers selling used items as well for various one-off prices.

I guess I was speaking more specifically regrading this post "gotten my one free TomTom map" -- I just wondered where they even got the one free map? It seems to insinuate that they got the software for free???

The kaiser comes with an applications CD with a 'taster' version of TomTom 6. Taster means a full version of the software and the right to download one city map. The other maps you have to pay for. They can be downloaded from the TomTom site. Some have reported that it is easy. I made a trial run - not having yet received my kaiser - and I found it to be doable but not staightforward.
I'll have to find out why I don't have my CD - thanks

Check out the unboxing video if you haven't already seen it.

It shows all of the things that come in the 'official' retail package. Ours should all be like this one as as far as I can tell they are all coming from the UK right now.
I should be getting mine on Thursday and it is a wonder i have any fingernails or hair left ;-)

Interesting thing also is that it comes with Co-pilot Live and not TomTom
Picked up mine today....very happy with it.
It comes with Co-pilot live V7 which is great, also full Car kit, Mount and holder which is made in Germany...looks the same as the brodit....and included is also the car charger.
U guys get a lot of things in the box. Enjoy ur Phone
Yeah...I am really pleased with it. I had a Universal before and loved that but it was just to big, also I could never get it fully compatible with the 3 network. I was worried about going from a VGA screen to QVGA....but I have already got use to it.
Copilot Live 7.0 issues
Guinevere,
I've purchased the HTC TYTN II from Three and absolutely love it!
just wondering if you had problems with Copilot Live 7? It seems that this version does not let you add custom POI's to its database. Also, the Safety Camera option is greyed out.
This same problem occurs on the desktop version as well (Copilot Central).
Any thoughts? Thanks!
How's Copilot 7? I haven't seen/used it since 5. It used to work great =)
When it comes to bundled goodies, North America really sucks. Luckily I still have family in Hong Kong and getting them to buy stuff there for me works out nicely.
i thought that htc had a contract with tomtom.
1099 is that with a full version of copilot?
a little off topic here but i was browsing the 3 website and trying to figure out what you guys pay for your wireless, 35 cents for 30s so with the 49 dollar plan you get 70 mins? am i understanding that right?
$29 for 1GB wow do you guys just get the cheap 29 cap and use msn with a data plan?
Well apparently in Australia, HTC's contract is with Copilot.
The Copilot Live 7 is a full version, with a few limitations as I previously pointed out (you can't update safety cameras or POIs).
Copilot Live 7 has a very much improved interface from version 6. It looks very pretty and very snappy in performance. It seemed to have learned from TomTom in terms of it's ease of use and its overall GPS experience.
neotekz, answering your questions about the 3 Network, I think you've misread it. Those price plans are what they call "Caps", meaning once you reach a certain amount of spend, you don't pay anymore till a certain allowed limit. The $29 Cap plan gives you a $120 spend limit, and another extra $70 for calls between 3 customers. So in theory, you get $190 to spend a month, which is pretty good deal. The higher the cap, the more credit you get.
The Data plans are separate. They start from $3 a month...
Excellent Value
That is a great deal. Stores here are charging $1200 and delivery end of Nov.
Can you give details of the ROM? Thanx

htc home plugin 6 button today screen super bright blue

That's just the dumbest thing I've read all day. First off Telenav uses data...so when you get into an Edge area and you are downloading you will not receive any calls...just notifications that you missed them.
Second is that for the price of a year of Telenav service you can have a full standalone GPS solution. It's a one time investment that you can keep forever.
Let me know how well your telenav system does for you out in the middle of no where. I'll be the one at my destination thanking my lucky stars I have a micro SD card with maps on it
Telenav
1. work pays for phone and service
2. Always updated! new resteraunt gas station exc.. your maps not always up to date.
3. connection Ocotillo wells, ca middle of desert riding my dirt bike yup get 3G. in california Its good. 90% of my nav is to find customers that are in california. 90% of the time i don't trust navigation to find something in rural area. so far every city I have traveled to telenav worked. I flew to new mexico yup no problem didn't have to install new maps just turned on telenav and searched for hotels and worked great. Real Time Traffic is so so but I havn't seen anything that works great when it comes to the traffic updates in southern cali do to it is always jacked up.
the only thing is the cost. **** I tip my local wench more then 10 bucks a month Telenav is cheap for what I use it for. and with memory being important to me I don't want 2 megs of maps on my micro SD.
Late!

1. Is it the best Phone/PDA/GPS System available at the moment?
This is bit tricky and broad question. Its all relative and personal
AND No device is perfect!
But, With the tips and tweaks you may find here, you can get the best out of TYTN II
Phone functions alright, GPS works fine with minor tweaks! For the PDA part, its upto you (what you want in a PDA?)
2. Is there another Model coming soon that anyones heard of as its been out a while?
Check Touch Cruise (Shares the ALMOST same spec)
3. Where is the best/cheapest place to buy it? I was quoted 2400 the other day at a reputable phone store, think that a bit much. MELBOURNE AUSTRALIA
USA ?? With the reduced exchange rate for USD
4. What is the current largest MicroSD available?
You should look for MicroSD-HC (High Capacity)
I've seen 6GB, Maybe larger is out now!!
5. Where is the cheapest place to buy the largest Microsd? EBAY ETC
Again i wud say USA
6. Can the MSD be used as memory as the HTC's is limited?
No idea
7. Where is the best place to get accessories?
Depends on what accessories.
8. Where is the best place to get Software free and paid?
Check this forum for sure. You will get enough free stuff and links for paid stuff as well.
9. Can anyone recommend must have software for this phone ie: a top 10?
Check http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=332438
10. What is the best hard case available as the screen needs to be protected especially where im concerned?
&
11. Best place to get screen protectors?
When you buy TYTN II, you get a leather pouch and Screen protector included in the package! But do check your package contents before buying!
12. What is the best Mapping software available for this pda not worried about cost etc, need for driving so good maps, voice prompts and interested in Australia wide aswell with good points of interest program ie hotels tourist spots, general info on areas etc. (And no ongoing fees is preferable )
&
13.I heard co -pilot 7 is supposed to be good?
I'd say google maps rocks! And you cant get anything cheaper than that
Hi meggs8888,
The price you have been quoted in AUD is outrageous!
Try Organiser World in Latrobe Street Melbourne www.ow.com.au
or Crazy John's.
The Australian price should be in the range $1000- 1200 without a plan.
You should be able to do better if you get acorporate plan with Vodafone or Optus.

co-piolt 7 is very good you dont need to pay anything to use or update maps. you do need to pay to get different regions (USA UK etc) and you have to pay yearly for trafic reports but is a very good bit of software

AT&T Navigator

I think I've seen in other threads that some people have managed to activate AT&T Navigator on the Fuze. When I went to Programs\AT&T GPS\Get AT&T Navigator, it opened Opera to a page that told me my device was not recognized, and none of the links on that page led to one that mentioned the Fuze.
If you managed to activate AT&T Navigator, how did you manage to do it? TIA.
When I got my Fuze, they added the AT&T Navigator trial to my device, not sure maybe they only allow certain phones to download the software.
Never mind. The mods I had made to let Opera display full web sites instead of mobile versions apparently fooled the TeleNav software. I used PIE on the URL passed to Opera and downloaded the AT&T Navigator .cab file with no problem.
So is this At&t Navigator free?
Or is it just a free trial/Demo?
Also, is it free to use? as long as i have the unlimited internet package thats standard for the fuze? Is it better than Google Maps Mobile?
It's a 30 day trial and then it's $10 a month. Very good though...

As noted, $10/month after the 30-day free trial, or you can cancel and pay on a day-at-a-time basis for $4/day, if you only use it infrequently.
It's different from Google maps. It's like a car GPS unit, giving you voice prompts when you need to turn, and such. I haven't used it yet; I'm still waiting for the delivery of my windshield mount for the phone, which should come in the next day or two.
I would just buy On Course Navigator 8 for $125, it has all og the US & Canada and there is no subscription fee. That's equal to one year of AT&T Nav.

You can get it cheaper if you don't need a lot of storage on your microSD card; the version that comes on a 2GB card (leaves you a couple hundred MB free, I think) is only $65. (Unfortunately, you have to run it from the card they supply, you can't copy it to your own card, which is a dealbreaker for me. I already have an 8GB card that I bought for under $25, and buying their 8GB card with OCN8 on it costs $40 more than the 2GB-card version; ain't gonna happen.)
I must say, though, that all the reviews I've seen of OCN8 make it look very attractive, and if someone had a way of copying it from the 2GB card to my 8GB card, I'd almost certainly buy it.
This workaround doesn't work...
I tried opening the url in PIE and it still doesn't recognize my device. I am using ROMeOS. Any suggestions on how to download Telenav Navigator?
Thanks in advance,
Brian
Well I emailed Telenav to find out how to download...
their software specifically for the FUZE and their Support responded with this:
"Support is not made aware of potential future versions of TeleNav until the time of the versions' releases. Unfortunately, I do not have any answer for you as to whether or not we will be developing TeleNav for that or any other specific model of phone."
Too funny. I guess I will be canceling Telenav service soon since even they don't seem able to tell me how to download the Fuze version.
Try putting this url into PIE. It worked for me.
