Storage Card information for all gene users - P3400 Acessories

Before moving forward, I kindly request all the gene users to kindly post all your doubts regarding storage cards in this thread only.
Hi everyone.i have made this thread for all those gene user who are confused to choose storage cards best suitable for gene.
★ Wellll...first of all let me make it straight forward that gene is expandable upto 32GB.
★ You can use 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB cards on any of the ROMs.
★ HTC Gene has a 201MHz processor. So,make sure before you directly start dumping your files in your flash card, make sure you categorize your files in specific folders. Also, take care that alot of files are not dumped in a single folder.Otherwise, the device goes slow as in case of opening file explorer/windows.
★All these cards can be well used with W.M.5,W.M.6,W.M.6.1,W.M.6.1 and W.M.6.5.1 respectively. So no need to fear about compatibility issues.

Storage Cards Formats :
krazy_about_technology said:
Storage wise, fat32 is best, you will get 20% more storage than FAT. But if you regularly backup your SD Card, you will see that while copying multiple files, the speed will be slower than FAT. that is the tradeoff. For regular use, FAT32 works fine, but use it only with cards >= 4 GB in size. Otherwise you wont gain much benefit. This is also because only cards >=4GB come in SDHC format. SDHC handles FAT32 better than pure SD.
One more thing that you will have to remember while using FAT32 on SD card, while flashing, you will have to remove the card, otherwise, flashing process wont start. This is because FAT32 is the filesystem used for SDCard flashing and Gene gets stuck on reading SDCard.
NTFS is not supported natively on Windows Mobile and i dont know if a pluggable file system driver exists.
So overall :
For SDHC cards >=4GB : Use FAT32 and remove it while flashing.Bit Slow speed while copying/moving large no of files but good storage.
For SD Cards < 4Gb : Use FAT, no need to remove while flashing. Good speed in file copy/ move operations but 10-20% less space. FAT32 on < 4GB cards makes them crawl.
I hope this will help you in choosing the right file system.

true...but regarding compatibility if ur device(eg.gene which is not compatible to SDHC cards) contains the required supporting dll files it does support an SDHC card which i am using.
im now looking forward for a 16GB SDHC card.will come in a month i guess.i tried it out in a local shop in pune.works great on gene.will get one for my later this month.

no problem mannn....feel free to discuss...well, u may be true.Actually, when i was about to buy an SDHC card, even i was confused about the compatability. But then i took advice from Sumit(Krazy) and he acknowledged me than all his roms do contain the supporting dll for SDHC.thats why i went for an SDHC card as i wanted an 8gb storage.
As far as i remember, even my friend(with whom i went to buy the card...) had a brand new stock new gene...we tried the card first in his device.din run..not even didnt recognise the card. But as i was using sumit's VM v3.1.1 it worked without problems on my gene.

Flashing without RUU?

Hi,
I have received my device today, and have flashed Hard-SPL already. Now I want to flash some cooked roms. This works just fine by using the CustomRUU (or the RUU provided with the rom), but is there also a way to flash without a RUU?
By entering the SPL there comes up a text "No Image file!", so I think the SPL is looking for any image files. I have tried to put them on a formatted SDHC card, but that didn't worked.
Is there some more magic I have to know about, or how can I flash a rom, without any kind of RUU.
Best regards
johnpatcher
well.....
with the diamond you drop your file on to internal storage (4gb)
enter bootloader and away you go.....hope this helps
Where on the internal storage do I have to put it, and must it carry any special name?
use file explorer
or with pc .....active sync phone
and open phone via pc and you should find it that way.

I don't think that putting a 100MB file on my device via Active Sync is the right way ... .
well
thats how we have to do it on the diamond..... our roms are 60-90mg
good luck
just get rid of file once flashed ok
Ok, I have a solution: You have to format the card, and then put the nbh file on the card, while naming it "BLANCIMG.nbh".
Works just fine and is faster than through a RUU.
Just rename rom file to BLACIMG.NBH and put in fresh formated microSD card. Insert card in phone and start bootloader mode. Flashing will start, it's more faster and secure
indeed: BLACIMG.nbh in the root of the SD!
faster, safer: but you'll have to reboot your telephone by opening the battery cover, quite inconvenient if you do it many times per day...
Whats wrong with using an RUU? When I had my kaiser I used it all the time.
^^^ You're right mate
Hi
I want to ask any one success to flash HD from SD, what is the type of the SD included with your HD, and did you reformat it, or using another SDHC card to flash HD, and did any one can flash HD with Transcend 8GB ?
I get my HD with Transcend 8GB SDHC Class 4 and can't flash HD from it, I get "No Image Found" message
I format the card again Fat32 and try it but the same error
I try my old 2GB microsd and can flash HD but with Transcend 8GB can't
there is many report about this problem without any solution, any help
thx
For me it works just fine with the included SanDisk 8GB, but my 4GB Transcend doesn't work neither, so maybe its a Transcend thing .

Think if you read that thread you'll realise that SanDisk does work, its Transcend sd card which doesn't (according to thread). SanDisk worked fine for me. Possible solution is to format SD Card to Fat32. Even if your SD Card already is Fat 32, try formatting it again.

[TEST]CAUSES of MICROSD FLASH PROBLEMS

BACKGROUND:
Many people (including me) can't flash ROM from microSD card
AIM:
To help identify possible causes of the flashing errors with the microSD card method
METHODS:
Method: A trial and error test was conducted on my X1
Variables: 1) Brand: Sandisk, Kingston and unbranded cards 2) Capacity: 1 GB and 2 GB cards 3) Format: FAT32 or non-FAT32 (other format)
Endpoints: Flash successful or Flash not successful
Total cards tested: 6
Write lock: released
RESULTS:
FLASH NOT SUCCESSFUL: All cards when non-FAT32 formatted
FLASH NOT SUCCESSFUL: All cards when brand = Kingston
FLASH SUCCESSFUL: All FAT32 cards from Sandisk brand or unbranded
CONCLUSIONS:
Seems like most of the problems reported could be due to 1) non-FAT32 format or B) Kingston brand cards
COMMENTS:
Conlcusions can not be extrapolated to all Kingston cards because I tested only two Kingston cards and both were 2GB. Possible confusing factors could be considered
PLEASE SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE to add more input

- Remove micro SD card from phone
(I assume you have a SD slot or a USB card reader on your PC)- Insert the card with SD adapter on your PC
- Open Windows File Explorer
- All drives are shown on "My PC"
- Right click over the SD card drive (mine is "E:")
- Choose "format"
- A dialog box pops up (see attachment, mine is spanish but should give you an idea)
- From "file system" choose "FAT32"
- From "block size" choose "default block size"
- DONT CHECK THE "QUICK FORMAT BOX
If this doesn't work, then try ANOTHER SD card from another brand
no prob with kingston 8 gb card
transcend 8gb class 6 doesnt work, gonna buy another tomorrow..
I have a 4GB Kingston Micro SDHC and that has never once let me perform an upgrade via the SD flash method.
Also I tend to have serious problems getting UC to work at all, and when it does start to work the process is never completed successfully. I just end up manually installing everything.
Have been planning on getting a Scandisk card for a while, might have to invest before my next rom upgrade!
Kingston
here's my experience:
My phone is an X1i that comes with a 2GB Kingston.
Ive used this card for flashing for 5 times already and
never encountered any errors.
i used to always format my card to fat32 with the default allocation size
everytime im going to flash a new rom. all succesful with no hang-ups.
heres whats labeled in front of my card:
SD-CO2G JAPAN
SDC/2GB 35
so, my card is not a SDHC?

SDHC compatible drivers to create! Cheat table for an address possible?

Hello and excuse me in advance for my English Approximate and for not having presented (I promise I will do soon) ... .
But I am French (poor me!)
In rummaging through here and there, I realized that (unless I am mistaken) the only difference between sd and sdhc, sd that would be made to be read in FAT16, SDHC and fat32 but the hardware is exactly the same (between one and a 4GB SD SDHC 4GB for example).
I wonder ....
Is it possible to "cheat" in:
- Partitioning my 8GB SDHC namely:
-partition FAT16 to 2GB or 4GB
a FAT-32 in 6GB or 4GB
To lure my Himalayas into believing that the card is inserted SD4Go
I tried but my utility under GParted Mandriva was unable to format as I wish (msdos table formatting) ...
Or is there someone here (or elsewhere) that could explain how to create a driver (or other) who can make the link between sdhc (table 32 and a Fat Himalaya2020 under WM6 (Aku5.0.1. CTRLPDA (test it on your Bouzina's a beautiful Roma!))
And using a linux rom on Qtek2020, is it compatible? would not it easier to make a first beta driver SDHC?
See you friends!

keep the card in your phone and connect to pc with usb cable in card reader mode.
Format card.
If still dont work you got a fake/pirate micro sd
How did you format it ?
On the official SD Association web site http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter/ there is the following statement:
"SD or SDHC memory card file systems formatted with generic operating system formatting software do not comply with official SD memory card requirements and optimum performance may not be experienced."
The site also provide an SD card formatter program, fully compliant with SD Association specifications, but, unfortunately for you, it runs only on PC, so you need a card reader.
I had the same problem some time ago, with a 2GB full size SD formatted with my iPaq and recognized as 1GB, this tool fixed it.
If you connect your device to PC as a card reader, as stated above, it should work.
Go to Settings / Connections / USB to PC and choose Disk Drive. At least, my Xperia, and many HTC have this control panel.

2. should I do sth before installing new rom? of course HardSPL is done. But between installing 2 different roms? I used to copy the installation file Kovsimg.nbh on card and did standard prodecure- switch off the phone etc but I guess its a mistake isnt it?
thanks in advance

Very easy SDHC is not support on the Blue Angel
really? ( too bad.. now i understand .. wish i can still return or exchange it to the store...
even my 2gb SD card is not recognized any help?
back up everything on the card (assuming the pc can still see the card).
then format it like this:
file system: fat32
allocation unit size: standard allocation size
label: whatever you want, e.g. BLUEANGEL
and untick quick format!
then you should be able to access it from the BA.
if you still aren't, there is probably something wrong with the card or your sd card slot in your BA.
