SDCARD Classes? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Everyone,
I plan to root and install jacxhero1.7r2 onto my g1 which hasn't been modded at all. All I have is the sdcard that was in it. (1gb) I see people with sdcards saying the class of it. Does it matter? Can I use my 1gb card and still run hero the best possible with three partition thingy on it? Does the class of it matter? Please let me know.
Thank You

The better the class, the quicker it can access the card(read/write) I suggest a bigger card than a 1gb, you will fill that up quite quickly. The higher the number, the faster it works

yeah a 8 gig class 6 is like...what most people accept as the preffered sd card. but i have a 4 gig class 4 and am running jachero whatever just fine. you just need to partition it

sd card + speed questions

Hello xda community,
I am new to the forums and I really love the website
I just have a few questions about the android that I tried looking for but to no avail..
1.) I have the default 1gb microsd card on my g1 - if I upgrade that to 16gb sd card, will I notice any speed difference? Piece of sh1t.
2.) Where are text message data stored? In the SD? If so, how can I transfer it over to another SD card?
3.) Is there an Eclair ROM for g1s?
Thanks so much!
1.) It depends on which 16GB card you get. However, you most likely will see a speed increase. FYI, the best bang for your buck right now in terms of cost and speed is the 8GB Class 6 SanDisk Ultra.
By the way, I have measured the stock 1GB SD card and mine came in slightly slower than a Class 4 (@3.5MB/s) 66x (@9.7 MB/s) SDHC card. YMMV.
So, it is possible that you could actually see a speed decrease with a 16GB class 2 card.
What exactly am I looking for if my goal in mind is to increase my g1's speed?
Read/Write mbyte/sec speed?
The Size? (i.e. 8gb, 16gb)
Thanks
I was thinking about getting this:
http://www.frys.com/product/6027788?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
Sorry, every instance of the word SDHC actually means microSDHC. I thought that it was obvious, however, I really shouldn't assume. That link you gave is the wrong card. That card will not fit into your phone.
This is the one that I have:
http://www.cell-phone-accessories.com/pol-312824-tsc.html
If you really want a 16GB card, either get this:
AData - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211378
or this:
Transcend - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820208481
or this: (although I have no experience with this one)
OCZ - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227489
Thanks a lot for your advice. I ended up by an Adata c6 8gb microsd card for $27 at Fry's.
2.) Where are text message data stored? In the SD? If so, how can I transfer it over to another SD card?
I would also like to know
3.) Is there an Eclair ROM for g1s?
Yes, but not everything is working
I am waiting for one where everything works...

HELP Memory Card Dead

Hey Guys,
Was running CM 5.08 on my Dream.
My class 4 memory card died.
My class 6 memory card is still on its way (shipping).
(don't know when I'll be getting it).
In the meantime. I'll be running on the class 2 mem card that the phone ships with.
Any suggestions on what rom I should be running?
(probably won't want to be running APPS2SD or Swap)
So probably want to run a rom that's nice, trim and snappy.

Take your pick. You shouldn't be using swap anyways. Apps2sd won't hurt -- it'll just *might* run external applications slower than they would internally. Note that the SDCARD's CLASS is not an indication of its MAXIMUM speed -- it is an indication of its MINIMUM speed. A lot of C2 cards are actually FASTER than a lot of C6 cards.
thanks for your response.
speak of the devil.
my new transcend memory card just came in the mail.
Still would be a good thing to know for future's sake.
Is it true, that I shouldn't be running swap? What does that mean? Feel like most people run their Dream / G1s with swap.

Can the HD2 benefit from class 6 SD? Or is it a bottleneck >Class 2?

I ordered a class 6 16gb card to replace the slow-ass class 2 8GB card I had in my HD2.
First of all I couldnt find the format sd tool in my energy rom (1st July) so I had to format the card using vista while the HD2 was connected in disk drive mode. THAT TOOK OVER 1 HOUR.
(Is there a cab file to install the "Format SD Card" tool for the newer energyroms?)
Anyways after formatting (Fat 32, 16KB cluster), I started to copy my 1.4GB sd backup file to the card using the same method as above (disk drive mode)....
My maximum write speed was 2.7MB/sec. Average 2MB/sec.
Class 2 speeds????
After restoring the backup, which took forever, I ran spb benchmark on the card and was gutted to get slightly lower results than the old class 2 I was replacing.
Can the HD2 make use of anything faster than a class 2 card?
Has anyone here tested a class 6 or even 4 card and found good write speeds (~6MB/sec, or ~4MB/sec)?
Does it sound like I have bought a lemon (class 2 labelled as class 6)?
I have spoken to the seller and he is adamant that they ARE genuine class 6. Reckons he tested some of the batch in TrueHD cameras which will not accept <Class6. Seems genuine and some of his feedback states that the cards are Genuine class 6. Which leads me to think that the bottleneck could be the HD2... Does that sound likely?
I'm waiting for a microsd USB reader to arrive so I can test the card outside of the HD2, but Until I can do that... can anyone tell me if a class 6 is wasted in a HD2?
The strange thing is that when browsing photos/wallpapers etc, the thumbnails ARE loading maybe 3x quicker than my old class 2. So I'm pretty confused about this one.
Can anyone shed any light here? Feel free to post benchmark results/screenshots etc.
Thanks in advance.
can anyone PLEASE answer this ^^^?
Is there any point having a class 6 card in the HD2 instead of a class 2 or 4 card?
there is a thread in the accessories section have a gander in there, I no this is Q&A's but lots of talk about mem cards in the accessories section mate
Cheers mate, I'll take a look.
I will move this thread there. I also recently bought a Class 6 card and and have seen a huge improvement in media reading and over all performence.
I get 4-5MB/s both for reads writes with my 16GB class 6 card in disk drive mode.
Thanks zelendel and kilrah.

That is exactly the kind of data I'm looking to compare.
Whith my 'class 6' Im getting just under 3MB/S WRITE and under 6MB/S READ when using the HD2 in disk drive mode.
If I use the card in a USB 2.0 reader I can get around 5.5MB/S Write and ~11-13MB/S read.
Based on this alone would you say my card is a class 6 or not. I'm beginning to think it may be a class 4 re-labelled.
Picture browsing etc is faster with my class 6 but all benchmarks indicate it is identical speed to my genuine Kingston Class 2.
What do you guys reckon, Should I send this card back for a refund???
Well if you're getting 5.5 and over 11MB per second with a card reader then we can safely assume it's class 6. The bottleneck is something to do with the phone, rom, cable or simply the phone doesn't like this particular card etc...
EDIT: Test your class 2 card with the memory card reader and see if you get similar results.

Thank you for helping me clear things up.
Comparing the 'class 6' and the 'class 2' transfer speeds is where I really get confused here.
Transferring a ~700MB .Avi to and from SD using a reader:
Kingston Class 2 8GB:
Read 12.5MB/s
Write 5.4MB/s
Unbranded Class 6 16GB:
Read 12.5MB/s
Write 6MB/s
So, from this, would you say its safe to assume:
1. The class 2 card is a good one, performing at almost class 6 speeds.
2. The class 6 card is 'Genuine' and shouldnt be returned.
3. There is a bottleneck when using the HD2 as a card reader/disk drive. I should be getting more than 2.5mb/s write speeds in this mode.
4? Does 12.5MB/sec sound close to USB 1.1 speeds? could my reader or even USB port (Vista laptop) be another bottleneck?
Once again thank you for helping me make sense of all this.
At least I now know that the 16gb card doesnt really need to be returned.
Can you give me your oppinions on the above?
Well class 2 means you should be getting a minimum 2MB/s speeds and class 6 means you should be getting a minimum 6MB/s.
Seems like you have a very good class 2 card.

Your class 6 is performing to spec.
Personally I would never buy an unbranded card but that's me. A branded card may perform better than there class rating e.g. Your Kingston brand I've always used Sandisk personally...
I've just managed to drum up enough funds to get myself a HD2 and now looking to upgrade my HCSD card to 16GB. To get the "right" class I tried to find the spec on the SD interface but I cannot find anything and the best data I can find is that I shouldn't waste my money on unbranded devices, I would always buy a SANDISK device for something I relied on! For data and communication!
People seem to get appropriate speeds for the class of device they have, if they are branded and sometimes if unbranded. However, there doesn't seem to be anything better than class 6 results debated or given. Is it a VERY rash assumption that the fastest the HD2 interface can go is Class 6?
Chris
Does this mean its not worth getting 32gb cos its a class2
& theat would make the phone slower cos lot more stuff on it
& will take more loading time & play Videos lagy ?
anyone useing 32gb ?
Thanks
My experience was positive with higher class micro SD.
At first, I used 8GB micro SD bundled with my HD2 and didn't notice improved loading speed. Later, I changed it with higher class one, same 8GB, with same manufacturer, Sandisk. Higher class one has name "Ultra" on it. Now with changed SD, loading became WAY faster. "Wow" I realized the higher speed of CPU of HD2.
My 2 pennies.
NEVER EVER buy unbranded memory cards!
Keep an eye on Sandisk cards only and even prefer them to Transcend and Kingston.

Maximum storage card capacity

Hi,
I want to buy a micro SD : I have seen that the maximum storage for micro sd was of 16 GB.
Someone has already tested a 32 GB storage card?
If yes, Does it work correctly?
Thanks for your answer.
it's works i don't now how becouse i just test my friends card.
Sorry for my English
Maybe it's was on android 1.6 (max 16), but 2.1 should be supported with 32GB
well, i got my X8 only a week ago, it's my first smartphone.
seriously, what do you guys want to store with 32GB card?
i can't imagine what to store in such space, i figure one could make a portable toilet out of it and still got some more space.
Movies (avi, wmv, etc). HD photos from professional photocameras, hi fi music like wav. Download a lot of stuff with torrent client and else. 32 GB really need for me.

Question was not what I do with all that storage.
Is it possible to have 32GB card in X8 I think that it support up to 16GB ??
I couldn't tell you, because I've bought an 16GB card (class10).
With the price of a 32 GB microSD, I could not fool me.
I think that 32GB is more money then the Phone
You are able to mount 32GB card I've just checked it out but the results are horrible - 500 MB of freshly copied music on the card, and now it is showed as "damaged" on the notification bar. I wouldn't recommend it to you.

I think the X8 will also work extrem slow with a sd card of 16 or 32gb
And with 32Gb class10? The read/write speed is biggest?
I believe that is not a question of card's speed, but more of device's ability to comprehend such a huge space. Just like with enormous hard drives in older computers.
ok.. maybe this out of topic..
what brand of SD card with class 6 or 10??
n where to buy??
im just unable to find it in my country.
in my opinion, 32gb can be handle with very well if this SD card are good.
i mean good SDHC
i found it in my country, designed for camcorder and etc..
but price also different
i just want 8gb with class 10..
currently i have 8gb, no class
my quadrant almost same with droid x, so i think if i have good SD card i can overlap droid x.
where to buy???
32 gb for a phone is a lot of capacity
Im using 32gb sandisk class 2 memory card in my galaxy s initially when it was 2.1 it was slow. But now after 2.2 update its okay. Only startup and shut down process Will take long time. class doesn't matter on phone it matters only when data is to be transferred from pc to phone . Max transfer speed Will be 2mbps in class 2.

there's a lot of good brand to choose actually, personally i'm using transcend.
what city are you in? in Bandung, you can try BEC. i bought mine from kaskus though, it has almost everything we look for
class.. hmm IMO it's unnecessary to use such a high class card. class 6 (6MB/s) is sufficient enough, because android apps are usually not really big, only 10-12 MB at most so no need for such a large data transfer rate.
Has anyone had good success with the 32Gb card? I dont want to buy one if it's just gonna not work properly.
thanks
Won't work
Chances are, it wouldn't work.
The Xperia X8 currently only supports up to 16GB of memory. If you go higher than that you would experience problems. You might be able to make it work for a few minutes then it might not be able to read the mem card.
Hopefully, in future updates we could use 32GB cards.
I've searched around, no walk-arounds on this yet. If I were you, I'd stick with 16GB. That's a lot of storage!

Is external gapps critical for speed of jb?

still feel JB (evervolv) freezing sometimes. Is external Gapps helping much?

I don't use the external Gapps method anymore. I find that using m2sd with options rmount, dalvik cache, and swap is the best. This way you have all your apps on the SD card where you only need fast read speeds. You move the dalvik cache back to NAND where write speed is important. And lastly SWAP will prolonge the life of your phone's NAND, albeit at the expense of your SD card. But SD cards are easily replaced, the NAND isnt.
Also, make sure you have a decent SD card. The one that comes with the N1 won't work well since it is a low class (I think onlyclass 4?). Get a class 10, it's worth the money. Best of luck!

If I understand correctly:
260MB system for JB/Gapps
sd-ext for everything else
What microsd card are you using? Does it make much diff between SanDisk Class 10 (16GB) and ADATA class 6 8G (current) ?
Thanks!

That's right, though not **all** Gapps go to /system/ some of them are treated as regular apps and just go to /sd-ext/ Just use the recommended hboot settings that texasice suggests and you should be fine.

I'm currently using an UHS class 1. This is a step above a standard class 10 sdcard which some may consider to be a waste of money. But I bought the UHS class 1 card because I found one for the same price as standard class 10 cards so I figured I mine as well. It doesn't hurt to have an over rated sdcard. This is the one I got for about $25 (32 GB is the max our N1 can handle).

From my understanding, there is no set way to classify sdcards so in some instances different classes of sdcards might be equivalent. That being said I cannot say for sure how your card compares other than the obvious difference in storage capacity. Since I upgraded to a UHS class 1 from class 4 I have seen a huge difference tho! You should consider upgrading if your performance is really that bad. Or just upgrade your phone
