G1 w/o Market? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So how do you guys figure to use your G1 w/o Google Market? With so many apps that are only available through the Market, and paid apps only recognizing your payment with Market instead of the developer.
I understand I won't have this problem since I have a "Google Experience" phone, but I'm curious. I don't see any alternatives here (SlideME doesn't even have the official Facebook app, and searching for "appmanager" turned up 0 result).

Once everyone using cyanogenmod is using SlideMe the devs will post their apps there. This is kinda funny cause it actually takes money from google. Also, I think we are going to have the option to keep our "google experience" apps.

Would really suck to have to pay for the same apps twice though.
Hmm, also, probably can't keep track of updates huh?

Android Market alternatives for those with no access to Market

It's apparent some carriers are not supporting the Android Market.
For those that don't have access to the Market and want access to apps, have you tried getting SAM (app store) client for your G1 from SlideME.org?
http:/slideme.org/sam2.apk
Anyone in the world can use SAM to safely buy and download with no limitations and without entering any sensitive info such as credit card details from your phone.
The only thing is that you will not see as many apps as you would on the Market, but with users help & input one day developers will realize that stocking Android Market alone does not do any good for marketing their apps to the international communities. Not to mention that the rest of the world will be hesitant to provide even their shopping habits to google.
So, you could look for apps on SlideME or Cyrket that has all the apps on Market and contact the developer and ask them to get their act together to stock other stores such as SlideME.org for this exact reason. Not everyone has access to the Android Market!!!
Follow apps from http://twitter.com/slideme if you like.
Here is an earlier announcement from SlideME team: http://www.prweb.com/releases/android/slideme/prweb2035414.htm
I am in India. and i was missing buying the apps..but not anymore..There aren't as many apps as on the market but then its just the begining...
thank you.
do we get automatic upgrades etc from you like the market provides- i looked at using slideme but wasnt sure how you would get the free upgrades for apps u have already paid for...i am in australia.
I haven't heard promising things about SlideMe's DRM solution, which appears to constantly contact the Slideme store when normal apps downloaded from Slideme are running, and not just the SlideMe market.
It looks good, and will probably be accepting Paypal. Nice alternative!
So what are developers to do? Well, recently I bashed on the SlideLOCK in a previous post… Though - the more I looked at it, this seems like the best option for developers to protect their applications. Though, hopefully google will remedy this solution and fast. Until then though, strike-one google market.

The last time I used Slideme it never showed updated or new apps so I had no idea when to look. Has this since been changed?
yeah- i want to know as well if you get automatic updates for each program bought?
We do updates for any downloaded apps. Maybe you have tried an old version of SAM.

Google Maps No Longer on Market

Anyone see Google Maps on the market? Seems as if Google has removed it. Hopefully this wont be bad news....

you can get the apk from any rom. just download it unzip its in system/app
I'm seeing it in the market!
Weird. It is indeed gone and ATrackDog doesn't list it as a trackable app anymore either.
I think we'll get by without it in the market haha.
I'm wondering if google is getting ready to release google maps 3.2 with navigation onto the market. That would awesome.
For some reason, i dont think this is a positive thing. I know everyone on here will have no issue, but its def not a step in the right direction for the Android community at whole
This could mean.....
1: Google Maps with Navigation
2: Maps will be integrated back into updates instead of being a market app.
Are any other google apps that come on the phone still available? If there aren't other apps I bet they will only put them on the market when there is an update. Google is probably trying to make it harder for people who flash cyanogen's new roms. Luckily we have the htc 1.6 recovery, but if you can't figure that flash out you have a rom with no stock/system apps. Google is making sure we can't just install the apps from the market. Just my 2 cents.

Maybe but it would seem to me that they would update the current one on the Market if that were the case. This sits uneasy with me. I don't like it.
I think this is a bad sign too. Goog may be planning to remove all their apps from the market, to limit the "Google Experience" apps to phones that are branded as such. With the slew of Android phones coming, they're trying to protect the revenue source from the handset makers.
It's still on the market for me.
Google maps was initially put on the market for the simple reason that it was an easier upgrade path than to force all phones to take a system upgrade.
The fact that only google experience phones have the market program means that only google experience phones would be able to get google apps off the market anyways, so it makes no difference.
If the "current version" of android is consistent with that of maps, no need for it on the market. If maps is ahead of android, then it needs to be on the market.

Selective Google Maps update

I got my Nexus one in March. Since then i think i made 3 Google Maps updates and all of them through side loading. Why? Because Google Maps never appeared on the market since day 1 i got the device.
I factory reseted about 10 times and i installed froyo on it and it still doesn't show Google Maps in the market. Yesterday, when Google updated Google Maps, i thought i should insert my Dutch sim card and see if there's any change.
Guess what? It was the first damn app in the top apps tab!!! I updated, inserted my original sim and everything works. Of course the app doesn't show anymore with the original sim.
Apparently, Google only releases Maps to the ones that have access to paid apps.
Can somebody explain why?
I'm so pissed off because of this and i'm thinking of leaving the platform because i'm tired of dealing with discrimination (not having access to paid apps makes me switch even more).
As an android enthusiast i want the newest software so you can understand my frustration of not having access to it right away.
So i guess everybody here has access to paid apps?

I had the same problem as you until I installed "market access" to allow me to get paid apps. You have to root, though...

That's true. I'll probably root when froyo gets official. I haven't done this before so its gonna be a bit challenging.

[Q] Help. Android market wants me to rebuy applications i already bought on my phone

I already own an android phone and bought a bunch of applications. I just rooted and installed the market on my nook using the same email address that is on my phone. For some reason the market on my nook wont let me download my paid apps without buying them again. Does anyone know how to fix this?
I tried redoing it and I have the same problem. Does this happen to anyone else? Does everyone else have access to their paid apps without having to pay for them again?
I didn't have to rebuy my apps. But market has been updated since I installed them. Maybe a newer version of market changed something.
It really doesn't make any sense. Its definitely the same account. It has my credit card information filled out already. I even tried buying an app i bought previously, just to see if that would jog it. It didn't work. It charged me and i had to refund it. I really don't know what else to try.
Nope, all of mine show up as "Purchased". Every time this question comes up it's always usage of the same account, but you say that's already been checked..
Good luck.
Thanks. It has to be the same acount or else all of my redit card information wouldn't bebon there. All of my android market reciepts go to this accout also.
Try visiting this page https://market.android.com/account and see a list of your purchased apps.
Standalone web site should be more reliable, than an app, hacked in a stock firmware, which kinda doesn't support google apps.

Now I'm more worried. The site you linked to doesn't have any record of my purchases either. My google checkout account under the same name, however, does have records of all of my purchases. Have any idea what i should do now?
did you paid the app with credit card or by carrier billing? Maybe it change something?

I always pay with credit card.
Does google have some form of actual support other than the forum?
I have nookie froyo on her now. Same exact problem. This is bull**** and definitely on googles end. When are they going to get a customer support line? I've never seen another company that charges actually money like google does in the market without having a customer support line. I'm sure whatever is causing this will cause problems if I ever get another android phone in the future.
Having the same trouble here
What kind of android phone do you have? Is it using a custom rom? I'm thinking that the problem isn't with the nook at all. It's with our other devices not registering with the market properly.
It's as I suspected. I flashed my phone back to stock and I can't redownload any applications either. My whole market account got wiped somehow.
same issue here, totally different tablet BTW (samsung galaxy tab). Same thing - I wiped and flashed a ROM (ironically, same ROM!) and afterwards all my paid apps are being asked to repurchase when I hit install. Similarly in the web market it says I don't own any apps....
I am able ot restore my apps via titanium and hilariously all licence checks for programs that implement them e.g. titanium, worms etc. continue to work thank god but Goog better fix this sh-t real quick. I have >50 paid apps so this is really really bugging me out (plus now I'm afraid to do any more flashing/tweaking)
Do you have the backup, OP?
If so, just run it instead of redownload from Play
Sure you used the same google account?

[Q] Amazon Apps Not Updating After Flashing Serendipity

So, I finally took the plunge and flashed a custom ROM today - been following the discussions and weighing my options since August, but decided "what the heck" and installed Serendipity. I haven't had a ton of time to form a complete opinion, but I am impressed so far...looking forward to playing around and seeing what it has to offer...
Anyhow, my question/issue is this: Since the Amazon App Store came out, I've been downloading and sideloading the apps onto my phone via SWM with no problems - i probably have 10 or 15 apps from the Amazon store (mainly the free apps of the day). So, today, I went to the Android Market to see if there were any updates for any of my apps. There were several updates available - some for apps I got from the Market, some for apps I got from Amazon. When I try to update the Amazon apps, I get to a screen asking me to pay for the app. Basically, it appears that the app is not recognized as having come "legitimately" from the App Store when it was that apps "free app day" - so, in essence, I've already "bought" them. The funny thing is I can open the apps and use them fine, its only if I try to update them on the App Store.
As I'm writing this, i'm thinking this might actually be somewhat normal - since they didn't originate from the Matket, I shouldn't be able to update them via the market, right? I should be able to do that through the App Store...
So, I guess I'm not really sure what my question is - maybe, is there a way to make it so these Amazon apps don't show up as having an update available in the Market?
Curious to see if anyone else has experienced this and if you have any thoughts on what to do (if anything) about it...
(Sorry for the rambling message - it's late and I shouldn't be typing...)
You answered your own question. Apps you buy in the Amazon store you update through Amazon. Apps you buy in the market you update in the market.
Several free app of the day apps have updates in the market the same day i dl from amazon.
what the guy above said. and also the marketplace and amazon market are NOT the same thing although they have many of the same apps. the android market wil recognize the amazon apps and say theres an update for it but to update it through the market you have to buy it on the market
