[Android] Shidell's Android 2.1 Eclair Port for the Vogue - Touch CDMA Android Development

Shidell's Android 2.1 Eclair Port for the Vogue
After spending nearly every free hour of the last three weeks (and since 10:00 AM Saturday, it's now 5:40 AM Sunday.. so nearly the last 18 hours straight?) I've finally learned enough about linux and Android to present what I consider an excellent Eclair 2.1 port for the Vogue.
This port is based off of Manup456's work, and includes API level 7 support natively. I hope to be developing with Eclipse shortly, as I have other aspirations on an API-level for Android. (...I'm starting to think I have too many aspirations. )
But, before anything else...
Thanks to:
Plemen. Inspired me with his AOSP builds, and helped me in the very beginning with a few small questions.. just enough to get my feet wet.
Zenulator. Provided literature in the form of guides not only on Android, but on ADB, internals, theming, and more--as well as answered questions. I'd still be researching what a binary file is in linux without Zen, let alone able to present this build now.
Jamezelle. How many questions have you helped me with? lol.
dumbestcrayon. Showed me a fixed GenieWidget.apk from Nexus One, which I've incorporated into v1.1. Do something thoughtful, take a moment right now and send him a message on behalf of the MSM7k users, and thank him.
tatnai. Thanks much for taking the time to assist people with this build, including ext2-related questions, and packaging it/making it available.
Also, thanks to all of you who have encouraged me both publically and privately to continue expanding. It is appreciated.

Features:
Android 2.1 Eclair (API: 7)
Android 2.1 sliding unlock screen
Voice/3G connectivity immediately upon first boot (give it a minute or so)--no reboot required
Nexus One boot animation
Updated wallpapers (including "Live Wallpapers"--Not yet functional, but incorporated)
Nexus One ringtones, notifications & alarms
Includes the latest GPS library improvement from Dzo (in testing, but appears to lock fast and be accurate as of 1-19-2010)
Extra software: Gmail & Mail clients, Market, Music, Corporate Calendar, GenieWidget (Nexus One Weather/Sports app. & widget), Gallery, YouTube (Nexus One) & Spare Parts
Limitations:
Bluetooth non-functional
Tethering (wired & wireless) unsupported by current kernel
Camera does not work
Voice Search/Dial isn't working (need an updated audio library for Eclair, but apps are included so once available, you can replace your .so library files and use them.)
Power collapse isn't completely working--this is an existing issue with Eclair builds and the current audio libraries
Notes:
Be sure to use the latest base files before attempting this build. GPS may not work unless using the 1-19-2010 NAND/zImage from Dzo's site. Dzo has made improvements to the kernel to help get more accurate results via GPS
LCD Density = 110 (for now, we're testing.) HaRET users be sure to set this manually; for NAND users, it's automatically incorporated.
I haven't tested this via HaRET, only via NAND--thus, I can't provide much support for ext2/HaRET users. if you do use HaRET, please report back on how this works for you, and try to assist others
This build basically fills the capacity of NAND's limits (about 88 mb. of data)--be patient when it's starting with the boot animation
This build contains both the standard English and Chinese input keyboards--long press on an input box (I.E. Text Message) and select "Android Keyboard" to set it to English
Please be sure to leave comments in the thread if you try this build. Thanks!

System.ext2.zip
System.sqsh.zip
Download -- v1.1, 1-19-2010 (.ext2 and .sqsh links fixed):
Removed: Voice Search, Voice Dial (without audio library support, they're just taking up precious space), Maps (easily available from the market, this chews up almost 5 mb. and I only have 88 to work with, so please download it post-setup), "Cube" Live Wallpaper (OK tech demo, but not very flashy. Pulled to save space.)
Added: Corporate Calendar )), Gallery3D instead of the original Gallery (a bit slower, please comment on your thoughts/preferences), GenieWidget App/Widget for weather/news from Nexus One, and YouTube from Nexus One. Additionally, I've packaged all of the Live Wallpapers from Nexus One. They aren't working yet, but once we've got the hold up cleared, I'll enable them.
Live Wallpaper: This is working, other than the Nexus One wallpapers. Search for "Live Wallpaper" on the Market, there's a few to pick from. I personally enjoy "Starfield".
GPS: The current GPS library incorporated with this build has debugging enabled, so it will write data to a file on your SD card. This shouldn't take up much space. You can remove this at will. This is simply a disclaimer and a notification of what to expect.
System_v1.1_1-19-2010.ext2.zip
System_v1.1_1-19-2010.sqsh.zip
Download -- v1.2, 1-24-2010:
Removed: Gallery3D (Slow, doesn't run correctly)
Added: Original (2D) Gallery
GPS: Updated to use v1.5 of the GPS library, which is another monumental step forward. jnadke is making great strides in improving our GPS library, and Google Navigation should work nicely in this build.
System: Modified lcd density from 120 to 110; this allows for the Dialer and the Music application to fit the screen correctly, as well as provides for a bit more room in certain apps (like Messaging) which were previously crowded. This does cause some other apps to display things a bit awkwardly, such as Menus, which can cut off a bit of top text.
Give it a shot, and post your opinions. Thanks to tatnai for the recommendation.

Thanks for your hard work man.
Lookin forward to run this build.

Looking forward to using it. The download links look to point to the same file. Is this right? I'm looking for the SQSH.

going to give this a go with haret and post back, downloading now. will system.ext work with haret without ext2 partitions - i know, it's embarrassing, I have yet to partition my sd card; maybe I should do that today lol? also, is libgps.so actually included in the system file - I assume I have to load it in the rootfs using adb or terminal, right?
yeah, I think you were a bit tired, shidell, looks like your two links point to the same file, lol. strong work, thanks shidell, look forward to testing!
oh one last thing - tethering should work using PDAnet, I think it uses adb to do it, so as long as adb works it should.
EDIT: system.ext2 works fine with haret without partitions . . . that nexus boot animation sure is cool

Awesome work Shidell
Can you fix the dowload link for the sqsh file. It points to the ext2.
Thank you

I'd like to ask if the camera is working or not on this build.

Maybe someone can refresh my memory - is using the EXT file different from using the SQSH? Or can I just swap one of the other?

Are you saying that tethering via tetherbot doesn't work in this build?

Hey Tatnai, for Shidell's 2.1 port, what rootfs/initrd/zImage did you use?
I have NAND running on one phone so don't want to disturb that set up but as I am trying this using Haret for wife's phone, I need to know that...
Thanks,

using the 1/6/10a rootfs, using the 1/14/10 zimage, and the initrd.gz and haret from the latest basefiles 11/16/09 (first link).
ext2 extension is fine for use with haret and no partitions.

Any special conf needed?
And just use a standard vogue default text, set at what resolution? Thanks for any help.

Great work! It's so good to see someone else packing up systems for the community!
Contact me any time if I can help you with anything

a couple apps courtesy of zenulator, can't recall the link to his google code page, but included are calibration app, development app (use both to calibrate the screen), and modem app.

Shidell,
Two words.
Freakin awesome.

I keep getting cannot read default text from Haret??? Probably something stupid on my part. I have an Eclair build running so I do understand some of this. But if one of you great members could share what files you are using it would be most appreciated. Thanks.
Do you need rename the system.ext2 extension?
I am using the following:
rootfs-2010-01-06a
system.ext2
zImage-14-01-10
initrd.gz 16-11-09

Last message I see is "failed to allocate the storage". What am I doing wrong?
I run Eclair 2.01 now via Haret. I downloaded the latest linked zImage and rootfs.img. I have system.ext2 - previously I have always used SQSH.
Thoughts?

you are using rootfs from 1/7/10. this version does not seem to work with haret. use 1/6/10a.

Excellent work.
Can you please fix the link to the sqsh file in the first post?
It appears both go to the ext2 link.
Thanks

I have a running package of Shidell's eclair, if someone wants it, I can upload whole deal (zImage, default.txt, rootfs...etc.) somewhere. I don't have any filesharing account.

quick notes, running from sd card without partitions:
1. audio: was hopeful, but looks like we have to wait on lib.audio changes for voice search/dialer and speakerphone. question for those using sd card with partitions or nand and rootfs 1/7/10 - does speakerphone, voice dialer/search work for you? (and does rootfs 1/7/10 work for sd card w/ partitions?). may have to flash to nand if rootfs 1/7/10 fixes the lib.audio for eclair . . .
2. love the lock screen!
3. Market: just like donut, must first boot 320x480 to see all free apps in market. can then switch to 240x320. ideal lcd.density appears to be 110 at 240x320, this allows you to see what you are typing in Messaging, and allows the notification bar not to be screwed up (120 is fine for the notification bar, but you can't see anything you are typing in Messaging).
4. other: small enhancements here and there with 2.1 (dialer, contacts, haptic feedback, messaging, etc). i see accuracy noted now in maps without doing anything special, seems like the 1.3 libgps.so is in the system? haven't tried driving with it.
5. my orange sleep LED is not blinking. i don't think my phone is sleeping... I think this is why we don't have the wake-up problem (multiple presses to wake the phone up). have not tried the hacked zimage.
Great work Shidell! Love this build.

Please do upload if it's not too much trouble..........http://www.mediafire.com/ possible?
I have got this running finally! BUT, I have the keyboard with English letters but the text in the keyboard such as DONE or NEXT is coming up in some Asian language??? Just me, or anyone else find this?
So, if yours works correctly then please upload, thanks.
Great work Shidell, excellent. The only downside for me is no tethering, tried with PdaNet just to see, but fails.

I got tired of running market enabler after every boot This build sets phone to US T-Mobile - you'll see all apps (including pay) for this resolution.
Nice work buddy.
PS. Are you from Canada? Maybe even Toronto?
The reason I ask is I see "The Hip" playing and I know they are big there. Having lived there for 21 years .

Thanks. I'm from the other side of the country - Vancouver - old Hip is fantastic!
Vancouver! nice. I'm in Victoria. Love The Hip.
Reuploaded and tested base.
i'm not sure I believe that market enabler actually does anything to the missing market apps for donut and above anymore. why?
1. after booting 320x480, getting full market, then going to 240x320 and using market enabler religiously, after 4-5 days my market still reverts back to having missing apps.
2. after booting a data.img at 240x320, I ran market enabler before entering my google account stuff. missing market apps still missing (paid apps yes, but no pandora, no google listen, no pdanet, no weather channel etc etc).
but i'm willing to be a believer. i'm going to fire this up in 240x320 with a brand spanking new data file and see what rolls. I think we need to find a way to fake resolution to google to avoid missing apps, as the market enabler/t-mobile footprint thing seems to only work for paid apps. waiting to stand corrected though . . . will post back.

This build won't show you the apps for different resolutions - just gives you the full market (as market enabler would) for 320 x 240; I'll have to correct the wording to avoid confusion.

love the build, fast as usual. I see you are feeling lcd.density of 113, I like it. love the animations as well. yeah, to me "full market" means everything - only way to get that, it seems, is booting a fresh data file at 320x480. I should work on a fix for that . . .
absolutely love it! same stable build as last time, updated. With bluetooth and fully functional gps, there is really not much more that I could ask for! For my phone and my use, this build is far and away the fastest out there, very smooth. Everything just fits right on the screen too. Nothing fancy but 100% usable.
Love that you have paid apps enabled by default too.
Tatnai, you figure out how to fix the market / resolution issue and I don't think there is a single thing left we can complain about...as small of an annoyance as it is.
Thanks Plemen! great work as usual
i´ve installed this version to my polaris and it runs very nice and fast. thanks!
just a few things i noticed:
- data connection works
- camera works
- wifi doesn´t work
- market doesn´t work (always getting a server error message)
- coundn´t test bluetooth yet
wifi not working is a big issue for me since i don´t have a data-plan. hope this gets fixed in the future

I'm not sure what enabling wifi for the polaris entails - I only have a vogue but if somebody sends me the info I'll add an update and add it to the first post.
Any body got google voice to work on this build?
Mine installed fine, but then keep force closing.

getting that too. going to try clearing my dalvik cache again and re-installing, I wonder if the new footprint has anything to do with it? if what I'm doing now doesn't work, I may try replacing the build.prop with another footprint, will post back.
EDIT 1: ok, i pulled myns build.prop and dumped it in, google voice works again. I don't know if it is the carrier settings (could be) or maybe the lcd.density (don't think so, unlikely but I guess possible; I know I've used 113 before and I don't recall it causing a problem). I've got to go to bed (my wife's about to kill me) so I can't test anymore. Someone should try google voice with myns build.prop changed to 113, and with plemen's changed to 110. I'll assume that plemen's is going to still force close at 110 cause I think it may be the carrier settings. then we'll need to figure out which setting in particular.

Review & Fixes for [ROM] IncDoes Sense "Desire HD"

My findings and fixes on the Desire HD ROM by IncredibleDoes with fixes maintained as they're collected from the community to help those with issues as well as provide those with information whom might be interested and are "on the fence".
After having run v0.2.1 but unable to get MMS working I decided to wait. While v0.3.0 or v0.3.1 does not fix MMS, there is a procedure that does fix the issue (listed below). I did not have my sdcard formated with an A2SD sd-ext partition and was awaiting IncredibleDroid's completion of v0.3.1 which does not require an sd-ext partition. However, after it was completed, many reported that they had no signal and a few other major issues. I had already backed up my sdcard and created an sd-ext partition but was hoping I could use the non-sd-ext v0.3.1 but with the issues posted regarding the v0.3.1 build, I decided to stick with the original v0.3.1 build that required the sd-ext partitioned sdcard and suggest you do too at this point.
First let me start with a big thanks to IncredibleDoes and a link to his main thread for you to get the latest updates and other information: IncDoes Sense "Desire HD"
Remember, a FULL wipe of data & cache is required.
So if you've skipped this process...start over rather than post any issues you may have.
Device Setup
My device info:
HBOOT v0.92
Radio 2.15.00.07.28
First, some have asked if having their sdcard formatted FAT32 was sd-ext - the answer is no.
Second, if you get the following error message:
Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk1p2 (file exists) 3 times, then
Can't mount SDEXT:
Failure at line 12:
copy_dir PACKAGE:ext SDEXT:
Installation aborted
Then you need to create an sd-ext partition.
Creating a sd-ext partition:
I tried to use the SD Partition option in ROM Manager but it did not work. It was suggested by ID to use Amon_RA's recovery image which was actually a very simple process.
NOTE: Unlike many downloads, you will actually need to read & follow the instructions properly. This is an actual .zip archive that you will need to extract the PB31IMG.ZIP image and place on the root of your sdcard, not simply rename it.
Once you boot into the Amon_RA recovery you should create a 512MB sd-ext partition and a 32MB swap file. You will need to select the SD:ext2 to ext3 option, then SD:ext3 to ext4 option to create the properly formatted sd-ext partition.
There is a link posted to an Android and Me article that shows how to do it via a command line but that's by far taking a more difficult approach.
The Amon_RA recovery is quite nice but if you have neen using the ClockworkMod recovery and want to flash back to the ClockworkMod recovery, the PB31IMG.ZIP ClockworkMod image can be found here "http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever" near the very bottom.
My Review
Three second boot:
I find this has been highly over rated. Since the phone is not completely shut down, it is not actually booting up. A restart or battery pull will provide you with the same boot speed that you are used to seeing.
Since the Shutdown option does not actually shut the phone down, people are complaining about having to do battery pulls to get back into HBOOT. While ROM Manager will reboot into Recovery, HBOOT is a different story. The way I have found to do this is to long press on the power button and select Restart. Once the lighted buttons below your screen goes out, press and hold the volume down button to boot into HBOOT.
MMS fix:
Use the provided files by es0tericcha0s but after installing APN Backup & Restore you need to delete the APN settings from the ROM before you restore the provided backup .xml file. This will fix the MMS issue in v0.3.0 (and possibly other build versions if broken).
Credit to es0tericcha0s for the post & files and to pd240 whom pointed out that the APN settings needed to be deleted before you restore the .xml file. Thanks!
Battery life:
In originally writing this yesterday (before the digital gremlins hit XDA), I had made a 1.5hr phone call using BT, downloaded just under 500MB of data over Wi-Fi for the Locations app (more info on that below), sent/received about 30 SMS messages, received about a half dozen e-mails, browsed the Web for awhile, watched a couple YouTube videos, streamed music over Y! Music & Slacker to test (but not for very long) and had GPS on for a bit. While I've seen several people complain of battery use, I did not see poor battery issues and was quite surprised since the 500MB download itself took well over an hour.
Call screen & Phone:
While broken in v0.2.1, as stated in the ROM's OP, these work 100% as expected in v0.3.0. Tone sounds for voicemail etc. work properly...all issues in this area are fixed. I believe that I read there were some issues with v0.3.1 however but I am not sure as I don't recommend that version anyway.
Camera & Camcorder:
Still broken as ID's OP states however it is different in v0.3.0 than it was in v0.2.1. In v0.2.1 the app would launch then quit back to Sense. In v0.3.0 it launches to a black screen and does not quit back to Sense and the back button does nothing. After pressing the Home button I used Astro's Tools to kill the Camera process and have since not futzed with the camera.
Chrome to Phone:
With many ROM's I have had trouble getting this to work and this was no exception. I figured out last nigh that even though I had played the Disconnect, uninstall, reinstall C2P game over & over without any success as well as logging out and back in with the extension in Chrome (Mac version) I had finally found the issue. Once I uninstalled the Chrome C2P extension, restarted Chrome and reinstalled the C2P extension and logged back in via Chrome, my phone was flooded with link notifications! All along I thought it was a device issue.
Date format:
I've seen people asking if the Calendar app states the actual day in the Agenda & Day views rather than just the date. The answer reported was no. This is not entirely correct. The date format set in the System Settings is a global setting. Whatever you choose is used for the lock screen, notification bar, clock widget as well as the Calendar app. Kind of odd but there you go!
Notifications:
With all of the ROM's I've run, none (even the 2.2 OTA) provided proper SMS, FeedR etc. "unread" counts. This new version of Sense does which is nice.
Also, for those not aware, recen apps are now listed along the top of the notifications panel in a sliding ribbon once dropped down. Could be useful if you remember that they're there.
Connected Media:
This is a cool central hub for the media (music, photos & videos) on you device as well as that which is "connected" to your device (e.g., via your Wi-Fi connection). In v0.2.1 this worked very well and was the only media app I used since it launches the required Gallery, Music & Video's apps as needed. Something cool I noticed is that it saw my DirecTV HD receiver. Now, there was nothing it was able to play on it but it makes me wonder if one had Hulu or Netflix setup through an Xbox 360 or Windows box, could it possibly stream that content? I don't have any of that setup to test but kind of looks promising.
UPDATE 9/26
via dgourd
Just to help clarify:
This is a DLNA addition to the phone, so it can basically communicate with any other DLNA device. I can confirm that it works since I have a Windows Home Server in my house which supports DLNA. My Incredible can find all my music and videos. It will only display files it supports though. For example, it can play all my mp3 songs and mp4 videos, put my mkv videos are unplayable since it is not natively supported.

Unfortunately, there are some things that work differently in v0.3.0 with the Connected Media app. The photos aren't able to view full screen without first looking at a photo that was in a linked Facebook album. Once a photo was looked at in a Facebook album, photos on my device would display when the thumbnail was tapped. However, quitting the app would force you to go through the same steps again (this applied to videos too).
In addition, if there wasn't an sdcard installed, the app cannot see any media even if it's stored within the device itself. I do not know if this applies to the individual apps themselves (too lazy to bother at this point).
HTC Hub:
This is a cool idea from HTC that with an HTCSense.com account allows you to preview and download many items for your device. Everything from Skins (themes), Widgets, single Sounds and even full Sound Sets that you can listen to before you bother to download them. Pretty nice.
HTC Likes:
Access to apps that other HTCSense.com users can comment as well as "Like" (think of Facebook's "Like" button). There are recommended apps as well and this should rally take off once HTCSense.com launches!
Locations:
While I have no use for it, people were asking about this app so I gave it a shot. As I launched the app it wanted to download maps before it would work. The maps it wanted were just under 500MB (as stated above). After downloading the maps, there were several categories displayed as one would expect (gas stations, restaurants etc.) but selecting these provided a "no locations found" message then prompted to tell me that I needed to download updated maps (WTF?). The maps for the Western U.S. were over 800MB and I did not bother so I cannot go any further with how this app works...sorry.
Market:
I think it was a CM6 ROM I had installed that asked if I wanted Google to keep track of my data & settings that I answered yes to. This new ROM does the same and something nice was that after installing the ROM, all of my apps were automatically downloaded for me. Very nice! Now, since I had installed v0.2.1, I had already setup my System Settings, these too were restored during the v0.3.0 ROM install (but not any app settings).
The Verizon tab is replaced with a "Downloads" tab and many Verizon apps are not available for download (NFL couldn't be found, nor Skype, My Verizon etc.). Kind of a bummer for some.
Quick Lookup:
This is a cool app that will lookup what you've typed in the search box. Sure, sounds boring but, you select from where it searches from the ribbon at the bottom. Your choices are: Wikipedia, Google, YouTube, Translate and Google Dictionary.
Quadrant:
For those interested in Quadrant scores...first run 1108 second run 1168.
Streaming Audio:
As mentioned above, both Y! Music and Slacker streamed just fine through the external speaker. I was told that Slacker sounded tinny using headsets but I did not confirm this.
Web Browser:
Looks a bit more polished. Using Wi-Fi YouTube videos played smoothly (unlike the YouTube app below). There's a new checkbox setting for animated .gif files which is unchecked (off) by default. I did notice in the 2.2 OTA that animated .gif's do play now, I guess this simply lets you choose to turn them on or off for speed. If you pinch the window down, it gets displayed just as though you selected Windows from the Menu button which is handy if you're in the habit of using multiple windows (which I'm not).
YouTube:
The YouTube app is broken in so far as you cannot log into your account. When you try, after selecting your account from the popup, the app just sits there and you're unable to do anything without hitting the back button. I tried this both over 3G and Wi-Fi with the same results. Also, when choosing an HQ video from my YouTube Favorites from the main site it was very choppy & not worth watching (unlike in the browser above but that was at 360 not HD). None the less, the Gymkhana THREE Part 2 video that's at the top of the YouTube app currently plays just fine in HD so other than the inability to login, I'm confused why some HD plays and others do not (but do on the 2.2 OTA).
Well, there you have it. After a second write-up (now over 8 hours of time spent) I hope this is of some use to the community. Since it was suggested I create a thread for this so that the information did not get lost in the main ROM thread I think it will be useful. If there's something other than trying different kernels or over-clocking that you would like me to try & add, please let me know. I will keep this updated as best as possible.

i had a weird issue, one specific to this rom, and it ended up being the deal breaker for me
i have a california phone number, but recently moved to the midwest. on EVERY other rom ive used, across two different phones, this hasnt caused an issue, my messages and clls all read the right time. however on this one, my recieved texts messages were reading as california time. since the messaging app uses conversation style messaging, i would have to scroll up through two hours of my texts to find a text that i just recieved.
it was insanely annoying. that coupled with the camera killed it for me. i dont use the camera much, but the two in conjunction were just too much.
i tried pushing the old htc messaging app and using that, but no cigar.
the verizon tab issue can be fixed easily with some build.prop mods btw. im not familiar enough with the INC yet to give you the changes off the top of my head, but with the eris, the issue was solved by editing the ro.product.name and ro.product.device i believe
Just need camera to work and it will be perfect! Already is the best Rom for me

I wonder if doing a *228 option 2 would help by setting the proper local tower info for your phone? Have you tried this? I know ID said this was a GSM ROM which confuses me that it works at all (at least from my BB days) but I guess it's quite an apples & oranges comparison for Android OS to BB OS.

i didnt even think to try that, it may work. ill have to give it a shot later. thanks
I just wanted to say thank you for writing this review. It is a process to go create a EXT4 partition on an SDCard so I have been hesitant. This is well written and I really hope you take it upon yourself to write more reviews about new roms in the future. I think I might have to check out the next version of this Desire HD rom when he releases it. I can't wait for this to officially show up on our Incredibles in the future and get optimized to our liking by some of these guys.

Thanks!
The partitioning after reading the command line process was a no go for me. While I would have no trouble doing it, it was just too much work. The fact that ROM Manager was failing was a bummer too but the steps I took were very simple. Being that I had 10GB on my 32GB sdcard was the most time consuming portion (about 20 minutes to back it up from an adapter & an hour to re-write the data). Partitioning was/is pretty easy.
Also, now that the ROM is in ROM Manager, that should be helpful too (even though it's a tad under 200MB).

I wasn't taken to a premium option, just a simple menu selection of map locations (World wide). Being basically homebound, an additional 800MB+ was just kind of silly.

After all the roms being made and such, I felt that I should take it upon myself to create a rom to sort of give back to the community. Thus creating what will now be known as Feather.
Feather is a rom unlike any other, and you better hold onto your phone because of it. What Feather is, is, a rom that is built for speed and battery life. This is my first build, and I'm currently working on a v2.0 release. I was going to wait for then, but I just couldn't wait, sorry x]
Ever download a rom, then look at how many apps there are, and realize that, while some of them are "cool", that you'll probably never use them? The solution to that problem is found within Feather. I've ripped out everything but the bare essentials to keep your rom going, and, so far, it's been helping the hell out of my phone. Boot time is much faster than I've got off of any rom, and, best thing is, everything works out of the box. No need to ***** and complain about how your rom doesn't have camera, or that the wifi doesnt work. It's a (fast) rom, everything works because it's stock. So, tell me what you guys think. Obviously it's not perfect since this is (1) my first rom and (2) my first release.
This rom is:
1 - De-odexed
2 - Rooted
3 - ZipAligned
4 - Light
5 - Fast
6 - Using this as a stock rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808173
Changelog
v1.7 FULL WIPE NEEDED
- Added in 3-in-1 reboot mod by default
- Fixed Syncing loop issue
- Better speed ups by removing un-needed defaults
- Various speed up tweaks
v1.5 FULL WIPE NEEDED
- Facebook Sync working!
- Added Calendar / Calendar Sync (you can remove the sync from the applications menu to prevent the Calendar sync process)
- Added Wireless Tether (seems standard now?)
- Removed setup.apk files (starts with clean slate. If you want to setup Syncing, go to settings->Accounts&Sync->Add Account)
- Has a boot animation ;D
- Cleaned up system files for better support of re-adding desired widgets and applications.
v1.0
- Initial Release
Code:
Buglist
v1.7
Still working on receiving picture messages
v1.5
MMS
[I]Syncing works, but is on never ending loop - Fixed in v1.7[/I]
v1.0
[I]Sync problems with facebook, google, and calendar [/I]- Fixed in v1.5
This Rom is made for those who do not use every single application on their own, but would rather install the ones they need to have a stronger / longer battery life, while maintaining speed and performance.
**For the v2.0 release, I'll have all of the removed apps uploaded so you are able to download and install the ones you need, so that you're able to keep the speed and performance up.
Feather ROM's and PatchesFeather v1.7 Link
It takes a lot of time to build roms, especially with everything I've got going on. If you appreciate it, please donate. I'm moving and have to look for work elsewhere, and still have rent to pay. Not expecting my rent to be payed haha, but having an extra dollar to take the girlfriend out is always nice. I know there's people out there worse than me, so I'm content and making due. Just saying, it would be much appreciated.

Remove Sense**
Removes sense functions, you MUST have another launcher installed BEFORE running this remove script. I suggest downloading LauncherPro from the market, or from this thread in the Suggested Settings section
>> Remove Sense Download Link
Remove Bluetooth**
Bluetooth has continuous running processes that go, despite whether or not bluetooth is turned ON or OFF. Download and install this to remove the services and application if you do not use bluetooth.
>>Remove Bluetooth Download Link
Add Bluetooth**
Feature to add back the bluetooth functionality after running the remove bluetooth script above. Suggest to keep this and the remove script on your SD card to easily switch back and forth for times when you do and don't need it.
>>Add Bluetooth Download Link
Add Text To Speech (for use with GPS, ect)**
As said above, this is used with the GPS services to provide turn by turn navigation directions. This is not needed, but if you'd like the application to read you the directions as you drive, download this app.
>>Add TTS Download Link
Add Voice Search Options**
Should give back the search key -> Google Search function. I was planning on doing something with this at a later date, but for those who prefer to have it as a Google Search key, here's the patch.
>>Restore Voice Search
Add Weather and Weather Syncing**
Sort of obvious, allows Weather to connect to the internet to pinpoint your location / give you exact weather details for your area.
**Run these through Recovery as usual

Fantastic...thanks for this. D/L now...

No problem. Tell me what you think
Just a heads up, when you install it, it'll say Incredible, but then you'll get a black screen. Just let it sit for a minute and it'll go through. After that, boot times are a lot faster.
a few weeks ago i ripped every piece out of my Virtuous rom that i do not use and was amazed at how much quicker and smoother the phone is. it boots up and shuts down noticeably quicker and just runs quicker and smoother. i have yet to see a single force close on it either.
i'm sure this rom is even faster and smoother than the one i'm running.
thanks, nickkx...i think this is just what i've been looking for. looking foward to v 2.0, so i can pick and choose what i want to add back. this could rival my Ruby...
jc
Sense-based, yes? May just want to consider updating the post with some details, as there are folks (like myself) who may only be interested in an AOSP / Vanilla ROM.
Despite removing a lot of the crap, which I definitely applaud, Sense is still running on the phone on top of the Android OS, which in itself takes some (if slight) resources away from speed/performance.
Anyway, it's always great to see a new player in the ROM game...I'll be watching where this one goes. Your minimalist approach definitely got my attention!

I've got some big plans for v2.0. I'm fixing up some stuff right now with v1.0 (found some extra things I can get rid of, ect), but hopefully it'll be released soon.
@mrchambo
Glad you like it! Like I said, I've got some more tweaks I plan on doing to it, seems like it runs great so far.
I agree re Sense...however, the vanilla email app is a pain as are some other vanilla/aosp apps. My daily and favorite to date is Ruby 1.1.4, smooth, compact and fast. i can remove most of the crap i don't want from it myself. but, anxious to try this alternative...

Your right, i'll update the post title.
Also, you're right about sense taking away some resources, but I'm fixing that. Currently I'm getting around 300mb of free ram while idling, which I think is impressive, so I don't see a real need to go vanilla. Plus, people like sense (the few and the proud xD), so I figured I'd keep it. Definitely keep your eye on this one though, have some big things planned for upcoming releases.
is this based on the new OTA leak?
Nick, what kernel would you recommend running? If we wanted to use LauncherPro instead of the stock Sense launcher is there anyway to get rid of the Sense launcher?

Ah, and make sure the apk you put in doesn't have any spaces!

Yes, I listed it as the base rom.
@Ty07allstar
Currently, I'm running the stock kernel. Usually I run King's #5 kernel, but I'm busy editing the rom, so I haven't had time to flash it. I'm flashing it now, though, so I'll report back in a second.
Edit: I was overclocking using king's #5 kernel but I'm getting random closes with the browser.
looks that way, its based off of the leak which was posted 2 days ago
So what the battery life on this?
nick,
tried several times, can't get this to install...any suggestions?

[Q] New Google Maps work on Galaxy Exhibit 4G?

On July 11, Google rolled out a new version of Google Maps for Android (V 7.0.1) for Android versions 4.0.3 and greater (less than 4.0.3 get a different update, I think.). I have used Maps and Navigation extensively for a long time. I also have used Waze. The new version of Google Maps will reroute you if traffic builds up on your route (just like Waze). I was looking forward to that feature.
I am currently running CM10 and the new Maps doesn't work well. The graphics are jumpy and stitchy (?). When I hit the options button during Navigation it brings up the menu, but then shortly thereafter that menu is covered up by the previous graphic and I can't see what I am supposed to select.
I don't know if it is a limitation of my phone, my ROM, or if Maps is buggy. On my previous phone, at one point I had to stop updating Maps because my phone wasn't powerful enough. I hope that isn't the case for the Exhibit and maps now.
I would like to hear from others, both good and bad, about their experience with the new maps.
Thanks.

The lag and stickyness is due to phone's ram. its optimized for phone with ics or jb out of box, which have sufficient ram. I was surprised to see it actually run on our phone

Thanks for the response. Sorry I am a bit slow. Can you clarify? Did you load it and also experience poor performance or are you just giving your reasoning (which I agree with) for my poor experience?
Also, which ROM did you use it with?
Thanks.
I tried it out on mine, saw the same issues you are seeing. Running the last available build of RootBox 4.1.2.
I restored the backup of the previous version I had made with Titanium Backup.
I see there might be a new AOIP 4.2 build soon, which will include overclocking options. I plan to try it on that one when it comes out.
Sent from my SGH-T679 using xda app-developers app
I am using it on AOIP I don't have any lag, GPS lock is good, only issue on aoip is that the notification bar flickers sometime and that causes the map to go out of whack, (1out of 10 times) so its manageable

Tweaks
I experimented with different settings to see if I can make Maps work better.
CPU speed doesn't matter - CM10 is overclocked and I experimented with it
16 bit transparency option - doesn't help
Memory management, zRam - this *does* seem to help. It reduces the incidence of flickering. I tried 18% (default) and 26%. 26% seemed to help more.
Clearing up memory - This seemed to help the most. To clear up memory, I did it by menu - manage apps - running.
I will stop messing with it and just try it to see if I like it enough to live with the drawbacks. Perhaps AOIP will help. I'm waiting on the next version. I expect it won't. There is always a small chance that google will make it less memory dependent. Doubtful, though.
We have been very fortunate that we have good 4.1 and 4.1 ROMs for this device. Eventually we knew that our device just wouldn't cut it for some things. Maps may be the first/most prominent.
Thanks for the inputs/feedback. If you have more insights, I'd love to hear them.
Google Maps 7.0.1
I'm having the same problems here. I'm running AOIP 1.0 with the included kernel. I'm getting flickering and corruption. Also, the map display hangs and stops updating my current location after a few minutes, but the voice guidance is still correct. I can swipe the map and then click resume and it goes to the correct location. It doesn't seem like a problem with insufficient RAM to me because I can play music in the background and it works fine. It seems more like an issue with the graphics driver.
I wonder if Google is trying to make use of the fast cpu to gpu copy feature that most newer devices support? I think our current drivers from Qualcomm have a problem with this feature because I've seen similar corruption then using Robert Broglia's emulators that use this feature. Maybe the drivers report that the feature is present, but it is not correctly implemented? Does anybody know if there were ever any Snapdragon/Adreno 205 devices with an official ICS or JB ROM out there that we could borrow their drivers from, or does anybody know if the Snapdragon even supports this feature in hardware?
Here is my ROM and OpenGL info:

Thanks for your thoughts and inputs. Unfortunately, I'm not smart enough to comment on whether the cpu to gpu feature is supported or not. Maybe someone else can comment. The drivers seem to be available here, though:
https://developer.qualcomm.com/mobi...phics-optimization-adreno/tools-and-resources
Ok, I think this problem is definitely related to the graphics drivers and not the amount of RAM. I installed the new Google Maps on an HTC Inspire 4G that I have and it's having the same problem. The Inspire 4G uses the same snapdragon/Adreno 205 SOC as the Exhibit 4G. I'm running a flavor of JB 4.2.2, and the ROM uses the same version graphics drivers. The main difference between the two is that the Inspire 4G has 768MiB of RAM instead of 512MiB.
I'm going to try creating a Qualcomm login to see if I can download the newer drivers. It looks like the JB.04.01.01.00.036 drivers are dated Aug 2012. The most recent ones are JB_VANILLA.04.02.02.060.053 from April 2013. If the new ones are available as binaries maybe the files can be swapped in the ROM zip file and re-flashed. If it's source only I don't have a build environment setup, nor the time to learn how to do it.

Good luck. I appreciate your efforts.
I tried this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2306286 to update the drivers to JB_VANILLA.04.02.02.060.053 and the phone boots, but the display is blank. I'm running a 3.4 based kernel, but I'm not sure if it meets this requirement
Needs a 3.4 caf kernel on the jb2 branch. Or at least the drivers from it

Team Insomnia had AOIP 1.5 up on their site, but I didn't try it because I don't like changing ROMs alot, and I want to make sure everything works before I flash. So keep an eye out for that. Maybe there will be some kernel updates, and then I'll try this again. Or maybe Google will update Maps.

Where did you see the "Needs a 3.4 caf kernel" info?
BTW, I PM'd one of the developers and he said "We cant use the new qualcom drivers because our kernel doesnt support ion."
I'm not sure what ion is.
[edit]
I found that: ION is a generalized memory manager that Google introduced in the Android 4.0 ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) release to address the issue of fragmented memory management interfaces across different Android devices.

Does the end result of all of this mean we can't run Google Maps on our phones, as the chip just isn't powerful enough? Can we downgrade to an older Maps? I really liked this functionality of my old GB phone and would hate to lose it. Thanks.

I don't know the reason why the new Google Maps doesn't run well on the Exhibit. As has been suggested before, it may be a driver/kernel issue. I think the hardware is probably sufficient. It may not be, though.
In any case, you can still run Google Maps 6.14.4. You can find it here: http://www.apk4.net/applications/travel-local/google-maps-6-14-4-apk/
If you want nice traffic rerouting (new feature of Google Maps 7.0x) you can use Waze instead.

You can download it directly to your phone. Then you locate it (in file manager under downloads directory most likely) and click on it and it will ask you if you want to install it. It is pretty simple.

Awesome. Thank you. Waze is ok, except they linked to my FB. I am already running Tinfoil for FB, so they can't track me. This is Waze is counter-productive for that.
Unfortunately, I am having another problem. Maps keeps updating itself to the latest version, which doesn't work. There is no option to disable automatic updates, so how do I make it stop? Thanks.

Open play store then -> settings -> disable auto-update apps
The Google Maps 7.0.2 update from 7/17/13 seems to be working fine now. I tried it yesterday and it was very responsive, and no display corruption.

[Win/Mac/Linux] One-Click Custom Rom installer

Hey guys, I'm looking for some testers for my Free-Droid application. It is available for Windows, Mac and Linux and is perfectly compatible with the Galaxy S5.
This software should be most useful to people new to custom rom installation. It takes from you the hassle of looking for TWRP and a Rom, it downloads everything for you (including magisk, microG and F-Droid) and does all the flashing on autopilot. For those users starting from scratch, it also helps setting up the drivers on windows machines.

You can download the application from the original/general thread here.
Feel free to leave some feedback or suggestions for improvement.
@imska have already posted on your main thread. .....
As far as the "Odin" look. Well, Odin, is much easier to read. Seems that some things, are Under others. As if the display is 1 size, with more info to actually have space for. (e.g. In Expert- towards the bottom , " -install google sync" is actually, Under the words "Only change these setting if you really know what you are doing" ! So yes, need to clean up this Free-Droid a bit.
What is confusing a bit, is where to work and where to look. Terminal has all the major things running like Passwords, IS the phone connected, etc.
one more Issue... Info- Sprint Galaxy S5 (SM-G900P Sprint KTLEDV ); Currently, Running LineageOS 16.0 (build date 22Jul19) w/Magsik!
Terminal says I am running a custom Rom. The Free-Droid Windows says that it does not know how to deal with my phone....
So Do I take that it only works with "Stock" images?
Oh, On Github, I did not see the galaxy S5 code name KTLEDV in your approved list??? could that be the issue here? Just not added into the system?
Hopefully you can get this cleaned up. Willing to try test it out again.
Just give me a shout, when you have a newer build out....
Tanx
Thanks for testing!
It does not need a new build to fix device detection... I did not know of a SM-G900P variant of the S5, but I just added it to the codename lookup table. Now it should recognize your device as the kltedv and know how to deal with it. The tool finds LineageOS, RR and AEX for the kltedv
Unfortunately, there is no official release of TWRP for kltedv and therefore Free-Droid will not be able to install stuff if a user is still running stock rom. Which TWRP do you use and where can I find it?
About the terminal output:
The stuff that gets printed there is just logging. You can just ignore it. A terminal window does not even open on windows or mac. Entering sudo password in terminal is only relevant for linux users and could only be avoided by setting up udev rules...
The "running custom rom" detection is there for the tool to decide whether to look for a TWRP image or not. So in your case, the tool should work now. For other kltedv users running stock, I will need to add a TWRP image to my archive.
Window layout / text positioning:
I have no idea why things do not display like in my screenshots... Can I send you a .jar to test if the layout is better?

Hey there! Please, was not "*****ing nor Complaining" about your app. Had read this thread, and the Link to another. Only had 1 person say it worked. I am always on the lookout for just about anything, that makes me life a bit easier!
Was on me laptop, Toshiba P55 (15" 1080 screen, no touch, 4th gen i5, 16GB Ram, and 1TB SSD running upto date Ubuntu 18.04.02) and was not running any other programs ( I had seen that I would have to use Terminal for password. That's OK with me, like a bit of control. Had some error there, popped up twice, both times trying to run it. Before asking about password. Everything seemed OK from there.
But the layout was not as Pictured in Pic 3, in the OP.
Oh, me phone. Actually I am on Virgin Mobile, which is that same the Galaxy S5 from Sprint on same network. TRWP, currently on build 3.2.2, there is a newer build out, but this still works well, believe it came out back March or April of this year.
I just thought, that it needed a bit better layout, so others, do really get into a mess by missing a line or 2. That would stink!
IF you would like me to test something, I am "OK" with that. Just send through PM message.
I can see, how this really can be nice, am not sure where it looks for ROMs and such.

No hurt feelings. Can you please replace the Free-Droid.jar file in the "bin" folder of the application with this one and report back if the layout in the expert pane is still messy? And you could help me investigate the issues on startup if you click "Report bug" in the help pane of the application and send me the created zip with the log files.
Thanks
@imska
You asked about an email. Did you want that sent through the link on your other thread (something like bug at Free-Droid) Or a PM here through XDA?
Asking, ahead of time, have yet tested. Will be very soon, but, because I am not sure where to send you an email.

Edit- Forgot to throw Git-Lab into the mix, as places to report any sort of Bug. (yep, I always try and look up what ever Srcipt, On Github, Git-Lab, and/or LineageOS Gerrit!)
Tanx Again.

Hi,
I'm looking to install the kitkat 4.4 os onto my samsung galaxy s5 and was very excited to see your new app written for people like me with not much experience in doing this sort of thing.
I thought it would be a good idea as there is a lot of apps on my phone that i don't use and I can't uninstall them and I'm running out of room.
Unfortunately this program couldn't detect my phone after plugging it in to my computer via usb and following the instructions to turn on debugging via usb.
Here are my phone and machine specs:
samsung galaxy s5
SM-G900I
Android Version 6.0.1
Baseband version G900IDVU1CQD1
I'm using windows 7 to install
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers.
Alright. I am a noob that has been reading the forums for a long minute. I have no idea what I am doing as far as flashing, rooting and customization goes... and I need to learn. So instead of using my S8+ I have decided to use my old beloved S5 as my test subject to try and understand what is what ect, ect, ect.
Is this a good place to start? I have a MacBook Pro I can use and/or a Lenovo with Windows 10 that I can use as well. I guess I am hoping that maybe I can get a Thumbs up from someone that this may be a good place to start.
I can do my best to report any thing back if it might help...
Thanks.

It depends on what you aim for... If you just would like to install lineageos on your S5 then you're welcome to use free-droid for that. If you would like to really understand what everything means and how things work, I think free-droid might not be the right starting point, because it is meant to hide all the (more or less) complicated stuff from the user and make the installation as easy and convenient as possible.
If you choose to use it and something does not work as expected, you're welcome to report back here.

If you are on windows then this is very likely a problem with drivers. Have you tried the "still not detecting" link below the instructions?
For those of you who also own a Sony device: Free-Droid is now compatible with Sony devices!
0.7.5 update should also fix an issue for some variants of the Galaxy S5 like the kltedv (SM-G900P)
