Use better keyboard on nexus one - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to use the better keyboard on the nexus? i installed it but still uses the default one

Yes, open the keyboard and hold the 123 keys till input method wording show. Then you can choose better keyboard as the default.

I installed Smart Keyboard Pro. To use I had to enable it in Settings > Language & Keyboard.
But I can only use it in html forms by long pressing a form field, selecting "input method" and than choosing it. The whole process makes smart keyboard pretty much useless...
Please, let me know If you can successfully enable better keyboard and overcome this problem somehow...

Thiago Souza

Replace Virtual Keyboard with SPB Keyboard

Greets,
I have been trying to figure out how to change the regular on-screen keyboard from the Tilt to the SPB Full Screen Keyboard.
Since I do not want to change from the real keyboard (as an option), the "Input" control panel isn't the right choice.
I just want to make the SPB Keyboard come up when I hit that little keyboard icon which comes up on the bottom of the screen.
Any ideas?
This should allow you to change the default keyboard.

Try this directly. It's a keyboard that works as default properly. you don't need any external tools.

Get MS keyboard back in WM 6.5

The HTC keyboards don't have a "Ctrl" key so I can't copy or paste in some programs - how can I get the default MS keyboard back?

Has it ever had a Ctrl key?
Cheers, Rob.
Yes it has a Ctrl-key.
I want the keyboard also back
I have searched a long time for this, tried many regedits but never succeeded. Your best option is to pay for Resco Keyboard Pro.
TouchPal keyboard also has copy and paste functions.
Hey guys, I was looking for the MS keyboard too! I cant copy/cut paste or Ctrl z anymore with the HTC qwerty.
The free Finger Keyboard 2.1 has copy and paste facilities: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=501122.
Make sure you install the WVGA version.
Iphone like keyboard (HTC Topaz)?
I am looking for a keyboard that works well with fat fingers the iphone board is so much better then the one I have on my TOPAZ
To get MS keyboard, I do this:
Modify this registry first:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{42429667-ae04-11d0-a4f8-00aa00a749b9}\IsSIPInputMethod]
"Default"="1" (by default it is "0")
Then install this program in phone memory:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=414422
Then modify the registry as follows:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\HtcExtFun]
"StylusOutSipName"="Keyboard"
"StylusInSipName"="Touch Input"
Finally restart.
This way, when stylus is in, it will switch to HTC's Touch Input (Full, Compact or Phone pad depending on your last selection) then when you take out the stylus it will switch to the MS Keyboard.
Why use a keyboard for copy/cut/past?
Here is what I've done...
Install the keys controler from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=555821
Change the behavior of the volume keys:
VOL DOWN :
- single click : default
- double click : Emulate CTRL+C to OS
- long click : Emulate CTRL+X to OS
VOL UP :
- single click : default
- double click : default
- long click : Emultate CTRL+V to OS
And it's working with all the applications....
And I quote:
This is for Topaz only! Do not try to install this on other devices!
Do not ask me to make a version for other device since my remappers are driver dependent and this can be very and very complicated without real device (if possible at all).
Nice one though romualdrichard, But I'd use it if I had a Topaz or a program just like that for my MDAcIV

If you go to Menu>Settings>Personal>Input and from there select "Keyboard" from the drop down menu.
By the way, the gestures will also work on the small buttons.

I know they also work on the small kb, but my point is that I like the layout with the other two options on. The row with numbers is gone so it leaves more space for the letter buttons.
The reason I cant turn on these options is because I'm using Benko's v5.0ROM (6.5) and that ROM has only the Touch Input kb. I think the chef took out the settings from the drop menu. Also there's no input settings in the personal settings, so I cant change the ks settings.
Can I just add MS Keyboard without installing the additional code? I want MS Keyboard whether stylus is in or out.

Use the same procedure, but put "Keyboard" for both registry strings.

Thaks for this....
Also I was thinking to go for WVGA version of http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=501122
Which one will be good for easy????
Can't really give an opinion on that... I always have prefered the MS kb. Other kb's that are finger friendly are the latest HTC kb's. Or the EzInput kb's which is simular to the HTC kb's.

I think...sensativity is based on main system setting. However you can disable "Vibration on Keypress" in the keyboard options.
To access the options:
1. Bring up the keyboard
2. Press the button with the "blue swype icon"
3. Select options
4. Deselct "Vibrate on keypress"

In that case I would return to your original idea of system settings.

i need the feedback so i know i pressed the capacitive buttons though, this is blasphemy
I looked for this too. I dont think there is a setting in the samsung keyboard to turn off the vibration. I have several other keyboards installed and they all have that option. This is why I dont use the samsung keyboard. Mostly use the Droid X multitouch keyboard.

Unable to change input method (keyboard)

I currently have Vlingo, Simeji and stock android keyboard inputs.
I frequently switch between Vlingo and Simeji for Japanese input, but now whenever I long press the "123" button to bring up the change input method option, selecting "input method" to switch between input methods does nothing. I'm able to go to "Vlingo Keyboard Settings", but not change the input method.
Disabled Vlingo keyboard, same problem on stock keyboard and now I'm stuck with it.
Do you mean, when you long press "123" and choose "Input method",nothing shows up?
I recently had this problem, so I used another way to switch between IMEs. Instead of using keyboard button to switch IME, long press on a text box and choose "Input method".

Yeah exactly what you said.
The alternative method works too.. Just wondering what's causing the problem.
I noticed this problem since I started using Titanium backup to restore all apps... I used to do clean install of all applications but I found that very cumbersome.

[Q] Weird keyboard request...

I love the keyboard, but i realized i never use the enter key on it...and I was wondering if there was a way to replace the enter key with lets say a little optical joystick thing? Kind of like how the Incredible had the optical joystick or whatever you want to call it....but have it as an onscreen thing.

Smart Keyboard Pro has an option to change it to smileys. You can customize the smiley menu so actually you can make it anything you want. So you can set it up so just press that button to say "Hello" (idk if theres a character limit on it)

I appreciate the respond but i was hoping that it someone could customize and put a joystick or something in there...just so when i have paragraphs of text it will be a lot easier to navigate through and fix words...the size of the enter button is comparable to the size of the optical joystick thing on the Incredible and the actually joystick thing on the Eris...i know its wishful thinking just thought it would be neat.
I am with you there. It is a bit annoying to change letters by clicking and picking that blue picket to move it to the letter you want. Being precise on a captive touch screen is basically non existent.
I believe the keyboard app mentioned above has the ability to add arrow keys. I will check and update.

Smart keyboard pro has an option in the general settings to "show arrows". So as stated above it is imo the best choice.

Yes there is an option to show arrows. I don't use it because I'm pretty used to where to press to get where I want. But i remember a few years ago when I first got into Android, I did need the arrow keys and they did wonders.
