Help with Set Up? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anybody help me set up ADB, SDK, and Emulator. I've tried all of the guides but I just don;t understand any of it. I really want Emulator too so f anyone can help, that'd be greatly appriciated. Thanks =D
I have a black G1 with Danger SPL and the latest Radio. I use a Windows Vista laptop and have the SDK downloaded in the C:/ folder but it's the zipped file. Should it be extracted in there? I've tried to do the whole SDK Setup process but for some odd reason it always downloads everything except for like, the firmwares like 1.0,1.1,1.5,1.6,2.0,2.0.1,2.1 or anything.

Make sure that you have the usb drivers installed as well.
What i've done is exacted it to C:\sdk\ It makes navigating to it in CMD a lot easier. Once you have that done open CMD and type the following
Code:
cd C:\sdk\tools
adb shell
This will find your device (make sure it's not mounted and USB Debugging is enabled (default in most roms) and put you into an ADB environment.
this is a really good tool too:

Droid Explorer is a Windows software that will download, install, and setup the android SDK for you all in under a minute so you are ready to go. I use this on a daily basis. This amazing piece of software has tons of plugins and a built in file explorer for all your files on your phone! All you gotta do is download, install, and go!
Download Droid Explorer - here
Install the program, and let it setup the SDK files for you
Connect your phone
Enjoy!

Also at what point are you having issues with setting this up?

Ok so I have it setup as C:\android-sdk-windows and then all of the files. When I type in the first command it says
Code:
The system cannot find the path specified.
And I have the Droid Explorer Installed and everything but it doesn't have the Emulator and that's all I really want. That and FastBoot.

If you noticed it extracted it to C:\sdk\tools, you did yours to C:\android-sdk-windows. So you'll need to adapt to the changes..
Code:
cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools
adb shell

Now it says,
Code:
Error: device not found
G1 is in Debugging mode and all.

A friend of mine had the same problem. Make sure the device is plugged into the back of your computer, reboot the PC and the Phone. See if that helps. And which ROM are you running?

Well see I'm on VegaMans Beta Legend Port, and my phone won't show up on my laptop at all not to mount or anything all that appears is the notification in my bar saying;
Code:
USB Debugging Connected
Select to disable USB Debugging

I saw that, It could be that USB Debug is broken on the ROM (it is in early beta) Try using a different rom.

Well man, I tried it on FastTest and now I have a Custom Splash1 Image and now I'm not afraid of holding the Back button with the Red one. I think I'm going to throw Sense UI off to the side for now until it supports ADB and all. So thanks man, after all these monthes I finally have ADB Access. One more thing though, how can I get Emulator to work?

Now, when I try to go into Emulator through CMD, I se this;
Code:
C:\android-sdk-windows\tools>emulator
emulator: ERROR: You did not specify a virtual device name, and the system
directory could not be found.
If you are an Android SDK user, please use '@<name>' or '-avd <name>'
to start a given virtual device (see -help-avd for details).
Otherwise, follow the instructions in -help-disk-images to start the emulator
Then, I navigate to C:/Windows-SDK-Windows/SDK Setup and I allow it to run. I get two windows, one that says
Code:
Failed to fetch URL https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/repository.xml, reason: HTTPS SSL error. You might want to force download through HTTP in the settings.
I close that window and go to the one that says Choose Package To Install, but the white box on the side is blank. I close that and go to Android SDK And AVD Manager. From there I go to Virtual Devices and it's blank and grey-ed out. I click new and see
Code:
Name - [I]Here I can write[/I]
Target - [I]Here I can't write[/I]
SD Card: Size [I]Here I can write[/I] MiB or KiB
File: [I]Here I can't write[/I] Browse [COLOR="DarkRed"]Dulled out[/COLOR]
Screw skins and Hardware I can do that on my own, but how can I set a Target if it is grey-ed out?

@th3fallen
143!!
I got it working on win7 Ultimate version
This works for Windows 7 Home Premium Edition as well.
In order to get ADB working on Linux (Ubuntu 9.04) I had to edit /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules (I may have created this file for the G1) and add:
Code:
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", SYSFS{idVendor}=="0bb4", MODE="0666"
What I was seeing was the device would sort of show up when I ran adb devices, but it would list ????????? as the ID and no permissions.

I was able to access it by using dream, magic and adb testing device didnt need any specific driver.

You need the latest refresh of the drivers (and tools for updated fastboot, etc.) from the SDK. If you go to a Windows command prompt and run Android, assuming the tools directory is in your path, you can select the update for both. It will fail in updating tools, since you are using an app in it, but don't close the app, just reapply at that point and it will work on the second go. Then when you install the N1, you will have the drivers you need to install as before.
Not meaning to argue with you but what I was saying is I have had no issues doing anything via adb with it as a magic I have done fastboot as well hey maybe its just working for me.

Hmm...I have that already in my /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules (mine has .rules, not -rules...I'm assuming that's a typo in your post?) and I'm still coming up with ?????????? as the device and no permissions, all attempts to do anything with adb result in it telling me I don't have permission to do these things.

Yah that was a typo.. The no permissions error appears to me that adb doesn't have access to the /dev/ devices used. I'm not at home so I cannot lookup what device is created and used in /dev/ for you to check the permissions. I know I killed the adb server and restarted it a few times while trying to get mine to work, along with updating to the latest sdk. So you may want to try those things, you could also try running adb as root and seeing if that fixes it (if so, then it's a simple permission error with udev not creating it with correct permissions).
Alrighty, I think I got it. I'm no udev expert (in fact, I'm rather useless at it), but this worked for me.
1) Make sure USB debugging is turned on on the phone.
2) Plug the phone into the USB port on the machine.
3) Make sure /etc/udev/51-android.rules has

Hey guys, I have the Android 1.5 SDK/ADB installed on my computer.. so I don't know what will happen when I mount my N1 (haven't tried yet). I want to be able to mount my N1 normally without ADB or anything, 'cause I'm not going to root it for a while. Thanks!
Confirmed on Vista
I can confirm that the instructions in the OP work on Vista. Thanks a lot, th3fallen.

Nothing will happen, ADB doesn't start interacting with your phone without you explicitly telling it to. Also, if you don't have debugging turned on on your phone, then it won't even if you do explicitly tell it to. Feel free to mount the drive on it.
ADB and Root
Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I can't get ADB to recognize my phone. ADB is all set up correctly, I have it updated (I believe) to the most recent version. I installed the updated USB driver and I see the "Android Phone" in my device manager. I have USB Debugging checked off in my phone settings. ADB worked fine for my G1, but it doesn't recognize my Nexus One.
I shouldn't have to root the phone to have ADB working should I? Can anybody think of something I overlooked? I am running Windows XP Professional SP3
Okay, so I navigated to the "1.1-nexusone-superboot" folder in the command prompt and tried
Code:
adb-windows devices
and my device showed up. Now I want to move those files to where I originally had my adb files in C:\android-sdk-windows\tools so that all I have to type is
Code:
adb devices
to have my phone listed. I tried replacing the files in my \tools folder and renaming them to what they were named before, but that didn't work. Could somebody please help me get this set up properly?

I was having the same problem yesterday. But i'm on Vista. Nothing seemed to work, but ADB was working fine on my Mytouch. At any rate, I ended up going to download the most recent SDK and trying adb again from a command prompt @ the tools location of the newest SDK, and then everything worked. I don't know if that was something I should have done in the first place and I just didn't know it (duh), but that's what worked for me.

Setting up ADB? Windows 7

im trying to set up a adb so i can use my g1 as a webcam:

however when i plug in my g1 it says everything was installed except the adb.
Do you have ADB setup on your computer in the first place? If not, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532719.
I installed the adb with the sdk as it was mentioned and my computer still doesnt show my phone as an adb device

Search for pdanet and install it. That's how I set up adb for Windows. (Btw - get rid of Windows. Finally did my switch to ubuntu today - ahahahahahahaha I'm sad I ever even used Windows.)
Yea, but adb is kind of a ***** about permissions and such on ubuntu. But each has its quarks.
@85mario85 - You have to cd to the adb.exe in the tools folder ie. c:\sdk\tools\ then run adb. Or add it to the paths part, but I can't remember at the moment.

adding it to the path just saves time. instead of having to cd all the time you can just run adb. i highly suggest it. and i agree - ubuntu is a ***** about permissions all the time. i love it, but i have to learn to use it. however, i'll probably always have a copy of windows in case i can't find out how to do something and have to have it done. better safe than sorry. =]

ADB HELP

I have tried every process I can find in the forum regarding rooting and ADB but I cannot seem to figure this out. I would like to think that I am computer literate and that I know my way around pretty well but somehow this escapes me. I am running Windows 7 64 bit and can't seem to get anything right as far as this process goes.

Thanks for your help...I did look around but I still can't get it to work. I've been through quite a few threads. I don't know if I'm missing something somewhere or what.
is your problem your computer not seeing the phone?
i RUU'd my phone earlier today to test out something i did, but then i found out that adb couldn't connect anymore. i'm still trying to figure it out.
Exactly what are ya having problems with?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=502010
1. HTC Sync installed?
2. Android SDK downloaded?
3. Debugging enabled on the phone?
4. is ADB showing up in the Device manager?
5. Check this thread out dealing with x64 drivers

Hmmm..
I have Win7 64bit too
I think I just downloaded the newest Android SDK and HtcSync for the Eris. It
works fine for me. What exactly is the issue? You have the phone in debug mode or whatever mode right?
some folks have used PdaNet
http://www.junefabrics.com/android/download.php
first off, I can't get Sync to work at all no matter which version I've tried. Then the drivers won't load for sdk. it just seems like nothing is working together at all.
alright, i figured it out.
uninstall HTC Sync and the HTC Drivers.
reinstall.
done.

Alright... what's your main problem? Are you not able to get the ADB driver to work with your phone in Windows 7 64 bit -- if so, do know that it is possible, because I have it working fine on my computer (Win 7 64B).
If ADB driver situation is your problem, do as follows:
1. Download the file below (to desktop for easy access - This is the Vista 64 bit Drivers)
2. Unzip
3. Go to Device Manager
4. Find ADB (It should come up as ADB with a Yellow Exclamation mark next to it)
5. Right click on it, choose update driver
6. When it asks you to auto find the driver or browse for the driver -- choose BROWSE.
7. Set the path to where you downloaded the file, and then click next.
8. If done correctly, you should see a window pop up that says "Successfully installed My HTC driver".
ADB will work after that is complete. To test, open CMD - go to androidsdk\tools folder, and then run adb devices (If serial # appears, there you have it).
Also with the method above, this will allow the HTC Sync application to work as well.
Source: ME, tested extensively and more than once.

HTC Sync for the Hero was released before Win7, so the Vista drivers will work but you have to jump through some hoops.
Now the Eris version is the same HTC Sync but it has drivers for Windows 7, it is the same software but is bundled with newer drivers.
Roger that guys, thanks for the help. I will attempt tonight when I get back to my computer.
Ok just got home and am doing the suggested things, after installing the SDK it wants me to install packages and when I choose cancel, windows says the program was not installed correctly. what do i need to install?!
Also no ADB in device manager!
yeah they took out the packages of the SDK, so you have to add them in as needed.
I have a 2nd Win7 box that's an Android virgin, I will try and run through the install tonight(off at 5pm PST)when I get home and I'll document the install.
hang in there.

Install packages? What? Weird, the Android SDK is natively 32 bit, but will work in Windows 7 64 BIT (That's what I'm running now).
Alright, steps to take:
1. Uninstall/remove everything you did before.
2. Grab the Windows Android SDK -- download it (to the desktop is fine)
3. UNZIP/Extract the SDK
4. Drag the Android SDK to the root of your drive (Local Disk C: )
5. For easy access purposes, RENAME the Android SDK from what you see to something like: androidsdk
6. Open Command Prompt
7. Verify that you can get to the "androidsdk" directory by running the command: cd androidsdk\tools
8. If you can get there -- then good, so far.
9. Now to test "adb" -- Have your phone connected to the PC.
10. While still in command prompt and STILL in the c:\androidsdk\tools: dir... run command: adb devices
11. This should return your Serial #
12. If your serial # shows up, then make sure you can run the command adb shell and see if you get the # sign, which indicates that you are rooted -- If not, then you need to begin the process of rooting your phone.
Also, if ADB doesn't work after this point, do what I told you earlier, I can guarantee that it does work, because I actually did it this morning on my work computer (Which is Windows 7 64 Bit).
Good luck, report back.
Holy crap it looks like it worked!! Thanks Pseudo! Now if I could only get my damn phone to find Sync I'd be all set.
Still can't get sync to register with phone but that's no biggie. But have a small issue that I dunno where to look to find an answer. I'm trying to update my recovery from 1.5.2 to 1.6.2 and can't seem to follow the directions appropriately.
via adb -> Requires a custom recovery (with test-keys)
Code:
Copy recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img to the root of your sdcard
Boot into your current custom recovery (boot while holding HOME)
Connect your Hero via usb to your pc/mac/...
adb shell
$su (not required if you have root already)
#mount -a
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img
None of that seems to work lol.
So since we're on the subject does anyone know how to set up the drivers for linux mint kde? I'm brand new to linux and I've managed to do some things but that is just one thing that i cant do so far and after almost a day pf searching this forum and others i just cant seem to get it

Alright, lets begin - To upgrade to RA 1.6.2, (You have to be in recovery mode (Home + Power) -- and also have your phone connected to the PC). Then do as follows:
1. Download the 1.6.2 file
2. Copy or move it to your androidsdk\tools folder
3. Run commands below:
Code:
adb push recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img /sdcard
Code:
C:\AndroidSDK\tools>adb shell
Code:
mount -a
You'll probably get the next line below -- that's okay.
Code:
mount: mounting /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 on /system/sd failed: No such file or directory
Keep going...
Code:
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img
After you do this, the shell should return #, if it does, then run:
Code:
reboot recovery
Now verify that your recovery says 1.6.2.
Good luck.

Well, since you've asked a good question, I shall direct you in the right direction. Linux Mint is a derivative of Ubuntu, so this guide should work for you., however do note that I have not tested this in Linux Mint, as I currently run Ubuntu 9.10, but you should be okay.
Go HERE and bookmark this page for reference, it has some good stuff -- Now this guide is not directly for our phones (CDMA HERO), however the directions, if followed correctly... DO WORK and have been tested by me (did this last night) with successful results.
When you get to the web page, start at "Generic Linux Instructions". Also, when you get to the heading "Set up ubuntu to recognize your phone, and the adb/fastboot commands in the terminal" -- step 4 will ask you to create an empty file, use the Ubuntu 9.10 format and NOT the older versions, again this format should work in the latest version of Linux Mint.
Hope that helps. Also, if have problems or want a step by step tutorial (pending how "new" to Linux you are), just ask me or PM me, I'll write one up.

[TUT] ADB Guide

Hopefully this helps someone...
If something doesn't work here let me know and I'll add it and make corrections. I will gladly accept recommendations and input from anyone. Also Mac and Linux users please post your info and I'll gladly add your pieces to my guide as well.
Step 1:
Some files are needed such as the SDK and USB driver. Note: Some devices require Windows drivers provided by the manufacturer we will have to play around and see what works with Adam...
System Requirements
USB Drivers
Android SDK
- Download the zip file
Step 2:
Extract the zip and run the exe to install. It should check for JAVA dependencies and get you all setup.
Copy the SDK folder to the root of your C: drive or where ever you want. Plug in the device (Adam in this case), DO NOT MOUNT ANYTHING, and when prompted install the USB driver. NOTE: I'm not sure yet if the drivers in the link will work with Adam or not so play around and see what works. You can always go into Device Manager and remove the driver.
Step 3:
Create environment variables for ADB by right-clicking on "My Computer" and select Properties. Then go to Advanced tab (or Advanced Settings in Vista) and select Environment Variables. Add the following:
Variable name: adb
Variable value: C:\android-sdk-windows\tools
Note: that variable value may change if you do not run the sdk from the root of your C: drive and depending on the name of your SDK folder...
Step 4:
Code:
adb [COMMAND]
If you replace "[COMMAND]" with an adb command, the above should work for you. Go here for a listing of ADB commands...
A simple command to test with is:
Code:
adb shell
"adb shell" should return one of two values, "$" or "#". And this should be the shell prompt from the device, not your local terminal window.
If that code didn't work, put in your full SDK folder path and try again. If it works that way, look into the environment variable and make sure its the same as the path to your SDK folder.

How to get your Adam detected in Windows
After following this.. you can follow this next to now make sure windows detects your Adam.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12022670#post12022670
it would be more uniform if people installed the .exe and have 2 paths for step 3 depending on 64 bit or 32 bit
for 64 bit when installing the exe the path is
C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools
and for 32 bit I believe its (not sure on this one because I have 64 bit)
C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools
Also might be wise to mention that if you do not define a push or pull path way when you start up the command prompt it will look in C:\users\"UserName"
edit: fixed: http://developer.nvidia.com/tegra/forum/after-installing-froyo-adb-cant-see-device
thanks for your help
howdy,
I have previously installed the adb driver for my sgs and sgs2. When I plug in my adam, the mass storage components come up, but nothing shows up with regards to android devices which will allow me to update the driver for.
Debugging is enabled on my adam (it is a PixelQi/Wifi version running beast+clemsync v3) and shows up in the notifications. USB Mass storage works fine.
ADB also works fine for my SGS2 when I plug it in and run adb shell/devices. When I plug my adam in, adb does not see anything related to it.
Where should I go from here to get windows to like this thing?
edit:
When I plug it in I can see these things:
If the nvidia harmony device shows up in the device manager I don't know where

[Q] Help with bricked HTC One

I've been a lurker for the last few years; never thinking I would need any help or assistance .. but I have a situation ..
My Sprint HTC One was working better than I had ever seen it just last Thursday. I was running CM11, with ART. I had an old version of SuperOne (Sense 5) backed up with TWRP. I thought I'd go ahead and load the backup, and update all the apps and then make another more recent backup before returning to CM11. I got as far holding the power button and selecting recovery. The phone locked up at that point.
It took 10 minutes to get it back to the screen where you can select fastboot, factory reset, etc. Interestingly I couldn't get into TWRP. The screen read "entering recovery" and nothing. It would just hang there.
I read that erasing the cache with fastboot might work, and it did. But when I was able to enter recovery, instead of restoring CM11, I thought, "well, maybe now it'll work", so I just rebooted. Wrong. Wouldn't boot. And, now running fastboot cache erase (or erase cache) doesn't do anything.
Now, by pressing the power button alone and holding it in I'm able to get to the fastboot, factory reset, etc screen. Went to fastboot usb, and fastboot commands work but ADB doesn't detect the device. I can't send ADB commands, but I can send ONE fastboot command. After sending any fastboot command, the phone locks up. Nothing from that point.
I tried installing a RUU. The .exe file detected the version on my phone, and everything went great until the program said it was booting to the bootloader. Locked it up. Nothing from that point.
I need help.
Thanks.
I uninstalled the HTC drivers and reinstalled them. A suggestion since ADB didn't work. And I can't get into bootloader. No difference.
Any suggestions
Any suggestions at all. I'm desperate.

You can get into fastboot correct?
Fastboot - Yes .. Sorta
I can get into fastboot, but I copy anything to the phone via fastboot. I'm told "unable to write". Thanks.

Ok it's probably a problem with your USB cable or USB port. Try using another PC and another cable.
If this doesn't work read some guide to properly set up ADB, uninstall all HTC stuff and install only the "naked driver" and than run the LATEST ruu. Maybe you have upgraded your firmware and can't flash older ruu's.

Will Try
I'll give that a try. I really appreciate the help. I run my whole business on that phone.
Just make sure you follow my suggestions properly. It should be just the cable, and I think you don't have the right drivers for ADB. Stay calm your phone is just soft bricked. You only need to be patient and read. Naked driver here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2263822

+1
I did the same thing a few weeks ago and lost recovery in the process. The naked driver did the trick. Also the thread about restoring after a gsm rom install is a great. It's not a loss. Not having an sd card in the one made things a little different for me, but I was able to get everything back. These drivers suck!
Progress
I've followed your directions. I downloaded the naked driver, and the minimal ADT. I found the correct RUU (3.04.651.2) I attempted to relock the bootloader, but I got a message .. " Status read failed <no such file or directory>" Went ahead and tried flashing the RUU (fastboot flash zip ruu.zip), and got the message "FAILED Remote: not allowed"
The phone is unlocked, CID SPCS_001, and HBOOT 1.44
I wasn't able to access TWRP recovery earlier, so I tried reflashing the img file. Failed remote: image update error. I tried erasing the cache .. "Failed remote erasing error", but now I can get into TWRP.
TWRP says I have "0" internal storage. I also can't mount system, data or cache. The choices are there but can't be selected.
I can't use ADB (device not found). and the phone isn't detected by windows. I had installed the HTC drivers, but couldn't uninstall them, so I install HTC Sync manager and then uninstalled it. The program deleted the HTC drivers when I uninstalled it. When I plugged in the HTC One (with a new cable) nothing happened, so I used the windows hardware wizard to install the naked driver. The phone still isn't detected, but again I can issue fastboot commands. Well, one fastboot command and then the phone freezes up.
If I use filemanager within TWRP there's no emulated sd card. I really think that's where my problem is. No partitions are available. And, when I use TWRP to shut down, it warns me that no OS is installed.
Any other suggestions?
I sure appreciate all your help. Thanks.

Are you Linux savvy at all? All this crap is far easier on Linux. I guarantee the drivers are absolute cakewalk -- there isn't a specific driver at all, just a rule to tell the kernel about the device.
I can give you the udev rule for the phone if you are sick of trying to get Windows to work. The Android SDK is also quite easy to install.
If you want to try, just install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Later versions also work, but that version is the current stable release. I can help from there.
Try another cable maybe it's faulty. Uninstall all the HTC crap, run some cleaner app like ccleaner (maybe there are leftovers) and install only the naked driver. Your phone should be detected. Make sure you have the latest version of ADB. here's the latest http://click.xda-developers.com/api...n 1.1.3 Here&jsonp=vglnk_jsonp_13877458281136
The ruu is not to be flashed with fastboot commands, you must run the exe file
Here's the latest ruu
http://click.xda-developers.com/api....05.651 .5&jsonp=vglnk_jsonp_138775039936710
-extract zip to a folder on your pc
-using fastboot, type this cmd: fastboot oem lock this will relock the bootloader
-from pc, run ARUWizard.exe from the extracted folder. it will run the RUU utility & flash back to stock

Installing Ubuntu
Not Linux savy at all, but I'll install Ubuntu. I'll let you know when I'm able to boot into it. Thanks.

When you get it installed, login and open a terminal windows (it'll install Unity by default, so click on the first button on the left sidebar and search for terminal, then click on it), then type exactly the following (cut/copy/paste should do it too) noting that the first command will make you give your password since sudo requests root level access:
sudo apt-get update -y
sudo apt-get install -y wget openjdk-7-jdk
wget http://dl.google.com/android/android-sdk_r22.3-linux.tgz
mkdir ~/bin
cd ~/bin
tar xvzf ~/android-sdk_r22.3-linux.tgz
cat >> ~/.bashrc <<EOF
if [ -d ${HOME}/bin/android-sdk-linux ]; then
PATH+=":${HOME}/bin/android-sdk-linux/tools"
PATH+=":${HOME}/bin/android-sdk-linux/platform-tools"
fi
export PATH
EOF
exit
That last command will exit the terminal. Start another and it'll read the .bashrc file and presto -- you have SDK access from everywhere.
Then, type this command:
android
That will bring up the SDK UI -- let it download/install all of the latest stuff (r22 of the tools and whatnot).
When done, close the android SDK window.
Type adb (bet it works), but fastboot will require root access (I'm not going to teach you how to get around that yet -- no problem, you just run sudo and I'll show that in a sec).
Finally, plug in your HTC One and type adb devices and let's see if it didn't just know it already.
Lemme know.
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Installed
I have Linux running on my Dell laptop. No internet though. Something about installing broadcom drivers ..
What do I need to do, sir?

@bigdaddy619 probably got you covered, but if not, let me know. Your friend for Broadcom chips on Dell boxes is here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx
The gist is pretty simple. If you don't know which wireless you have, do this:
1) widen your terminal window so you have ample room (good and wide);
2) run sudo lspci -v
Hunt down the Broadcom info -- it'll say which device is your broadcom wifi. Just need the numbers.
Working ..
I feel like I'm making some progress here, but it's still not being recognized. Everything worked great up until ...
After closing the SDK window, I connected the HTC One, and "Fastboot USB" came up on my phone. I typed adb devices and got a line "List of Devices attached" by nothing was showing as being attached.
If I enter a fastboot command, it hangs saying "waiting on device".

Hang in, writing you some instructions, just a few minutes -- just need to get a udev rule into place but I want to make it easy for you.

Actually -- let's walk before we run. I loaded up Ubuntu real quick to assure I can duplicate what I want you to see. So, do this:
1) connect (if not already connected) the HTC to the usb port so you get 'fastboot (usb)' as normal;
2) type the following:
sudo su
lsusb -v >/tmp/lsusb.txt
chmod 666 /tmp/lsbusb.txt
exit
Now, edit that file in the text editor (just search for 'edit' like you did for 'termina' and select the "Text Editor". When you get that open, have it "File | Open" the file above -- /tmp/lsusb.txt
Then look through for text similar to what I give below. If we get that -- I need the idVendor line -- it should read: "idVendor 0x0bb4 High Tech Computer Corp."
I copied some sample output from my own machine so you can see how it should look:
--------
probably a bunch of stuff we don't care about, then something like...
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0bb4:0ff0 High Tech Computer Corp.
Device Descriptor:
bLength 18
bDescriptorType 1
bcdUSB 2.10
bDeviceClass 0 (Defined at Interface level)
bDeviceSubClass 0
bDeviceProtocol 0
bMaxPacketSize0 64
idVendor 0x0bb4 High Tech Computer Corp.
idProduct 0x0ff0
bcdDevice 1.00
iManufacturer 1 htc, Inc
iProduct 2 Android 1.0
iSerial 3 XXXXXXXXXXXX (I X'd this out -- it'll be your device serial id).
bNumConfigurations 1
Configuration Descriptor:
bLength 9
bDescriptorType 2
wTotalLength 32
bNumInterfaces 1
bConfigurationValue 1
iConfiguration 0
bmAttributes 0x80
and a bunch more stuff...
If we don't see that, we got troubles. If we do -- we'll make a udev rule to load it up for adb and fastboot.
It appears he's bricked, when we first mounted the phone to the PC and it tried to install drivers we got QHSUSB_DLOAD which usually indicates a brick.
The strange thing was we could still access fastbootusb and the PC would recognize it being in fastboot. But any other command then fastboot devices would lock up the bootloader and fail.
Getting Closer
That's exactly it. "idVendor 0x0bb4 High Tech Computer Corp."
Finally, something worked. Thanks.
