Connecting nexus one to Internet via USB - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Before i unlocked and flashed my Nexus one, it was enough to connect my Nexus one via USB to my Laptop to use laptop internet connection.
The first time i did it, Windows installed a bridge network.
Now that i am using a customer ROM (CYA 5.5.0.3), it does not work anymore.
Any idea if it is removed from the custom ROM, or if i need any kind of menu to make it to work?
Thanks in advance
Cedric

any taker?
i cannot be the only one that is interested in this basic function?

Have you tried the Wireless tether application? It does the exact same thing as USB tether, but wirelessly:

How to share internet connection to NEXUS from laptop

I have LAN cable connection on my laptop. It has wifi and bluetooth module. Is there any way to get an internet connection on my Nexus by using them? My laptop runs Vista.
Thx
if i understand correctly, you want to share the internet on your laptop with your nexus.
You need to configure your wifi on the laptop as accesspoint and connect the nexus with it.
Google internet sharing wifi
you can just turn on network sharing on your laptop... google is your friend here if you need specifics.
Is there any way to do this without a Wireless network card? Since I'm on the other side of the house and get intermittent signal with my N1's wifi. Can it be done using the USB cable? aka reverse tethering?
I don't think android supports this "reverse tethering". Actually I think only WinMo phones support it via Activsync, which is automatic as soon as you plug in your USB.

Is there a way set up a non-ad hoc network on the laptop because the N1 is not compatible with ad hoc networks?
Although you can set up a software AP on your laptop, consider buying a WiFi access point. That way your laptop won't have to be plugged in either And its way easier to setup.
If you are using Windows 7 on your laptop, you can use Connectify (url is connectify.me) to convert your laptop into a wifi hotspot, which you can then connect your N1 to (via wifi)

What about for windows XP? is there an application similar to conectify.
Also just to let you guys know stock android does not let you connect to ad-hoc network sharing like some mentioned earlier. The devices does not see ad-hoc networks.
There is a issue request here about it.

...I'm more comfortable with xp so I'm doomed not to be able to set up an AP with my laptop...
I've been all over this connection and sharing internet connetion thing these days, and today it seems so close to work:
I paired my N7 and laptop on bluetooth, laptop with IVT driver, and N7 clearly shows in bluetooth - paired devices - profiles, under internet access, "connected to device for internet access".
yet all apps on N7 still say no connection.
god somebody pls help me!! It just doesn't make any sense!
btw, I did tick the option of "internet access sharing" and selected the bluetooth network in the settings of the internet accessing connection on my laptop.
I just don't understand whatever went wrong...

Yes, but it's not free. There is a free trial though if you want to make sure it works with your setup.

[Q] two Gingerbread Problems

Hey Guys
i have to questions about gingerbread. I´ve at the moment this version installed:NexusHD2-Gingerbread_V2.3_NAND_(Android-2.3.2)_update, but i think it is a more general issue.
Is it possible the have internet access via usb cable connection and windows7!?
In froyo i was able to select between my sd card, loading and internet passthrough.
Second thing is: i like to have this app. someone knows the name of it?
Is this as issue with all Gingerbread versions? Which version is recommendable?

Is nothing else like wifi tethering. In some builds works only after the installation of an appropriate application such as "wired tether 1.4" (market, google), unless you mean about the shared internet connection on your device from your win7 via usb...
no as far as i understood is tethering the other way around. tethering is the connection of my computer via mobile internet connection but i wanna have the other way around...
i want to use the usb cable to connect my mobile to the internet via win7

I don't think you can do that. And the "application" you're talking about is actually part of the Sense roms that you can download. You can't get it on your current rom, no matter what/how much you try.

You could use vnc and connect your phone to your pc that way. But then you would see the desktop of your pc on your phone and remote control your pc.
Not the same as sharing the internet connection but depending on what you want to do it may be sufficient.

the USB tethering your talking about, is only for HTC Sense roms. stock android 2.3 doesnt have that feature other than wifi tethering.

Like MS Active sync for Windows.
Can't do it without software on PC side, so it's not possible for now.
The only reason I left the NexusHD ROM was because I didn't like how I couldn't manage connections through the dropdown menu that you posted the picture of. Currently on MDJ CM7 V2.6
to the OP, you could simply connect you phone via wifi to your home router and get internet access that way.
it imho would be cumbersome to remain wired to your pc for internet access passthrough.
hope i don't have these problems when i try it out!

[Q] Help needed in combination of WiFi.... Radio.... oxygen1mod & USB adapter

Guys and gals...
i've searched my query here in this forum but still couldn't find the exact solution.
Im pretty new to this entire "android" platform. just got my nexus one rooted and unlocked.
my only concern here is regarding "wifi Problem". I've got linksys Compact wirelss-G USB adapter (WUSB54GC).
Now I don't know how to access it just like a router.
Secondly, When i started using it with nexus one it connected without any flaw. But some days after It's not connecting with N1, having said that
I've also used this adapter with Ipad2 and sometimes the wifi doesn't connect to the ipad2 properly.
Now how I was connecting like I always delete the existing adhoc connection and create another one and then try to connect... after few tries it connects but after few days N1 says obtainig IP address... and in windows 7 the status says connected with "no network access"
I tried "WEP and other protocols" and also without any encyption as well but nothing is working here.
Actually In our country we dont have 3G network we're still on EDGE and that costs us much so here I'm relying on my home USB 1MB connection to use it via adapter.
Currently Im using Oxygenmod FINALE
Please help me whether it's my N1 or the adapter or should there be anything wrong with the Radio i've got v4.06. with oxygen1mod finale
Ask me anything If u feel.
And yeah BTW I didn't know that Android is an open source so u can call me a "Nwwwwweeeeebbbb"
I am not familiar with Oxygenmod, but if it is Gingerbread based, I would highly recommend updating your radio to 5.08.

Thanks... But let me update it that I've just updated to 5.12 radio... I was too curious that's y i played the bet. after update nothing seems to me different network signals are same i.e 100% blutooth working and havnt tried EDGE. WiFi still not working and stuck at "obtaining IP address"

I don't believe these phones have proper support for ADHOC, but it seems it is more of a computer problem if the ipad is having issues as well. Is there a reason you are trying to do an adhoc wireless network instead of getting a cheap wireless router?

well it's the first time I've got this USB adapter so I only know of this adhoc connection being made in win 7. havnt experienced a router though.
but could u please confirm if any cheap router supports my USB internet connection? (i dont have a DSL connection rather wireless)

I doubt any router would support the usb wireless adapter, but you can use windows internet connection sharing to share the connection through the wired connection. Then you can hook the router into your ethernet port on your computer and share the connection that way.
Definitely not the easiest, but I have never tried sharing an internet connection through an adhoc wireless connection.

I think I need to clear something here....
My ISP gave me a USB called (EVO), I just plug that "EVO" into my computer and I can download upto 3.1Mbps and browse and surf yada yada...
then I bought "linksys USB adapter" to make my internet connection WiFi.
Now how would I connect my N1 to internet via WiFi when u say "adhoc" is not supported.
Is there anything apart from what "Bassmadrigal" suggested.? (caz it sounds too technical for me)
I don't know if ADHOC is actually supported (and if it is, how well it is supported) on Android. But if you are having issues with devices other than your phone, then I think it is going to be a computer issue that probably won't be able to be fixed with any devices on your phone.
I can try to make it a bit more non-techincal...
Buy a cheap wireless router and use the router's guide to get a wireless network set up
Plug in the network cable from the computer's network card to the "internet" port on the router
Follow this guide to get Internet Connection Sharing up and running on your computer

If your desktop is connected via Ethernet but has wireless capabilities there is an app for PC's called connectify that can make your PC a wireless hotspot .

What exactly is your setup is your desktop connected by Ethernet to a wireless router, how is the tablet connected.
what is that you are trying to achieve, the more info you can give the easier it will be for me to replicate and hopefully come up with an answer.
regards
my hp touchpad can connect via wifi, but it's a lot slower than a wired connection. i want to try achieving FULL/near full speed download on my hp touchpad, by reverse tethering to the desktop's ethernet connection.
the desktop is connected to the wireless router through a powerline adapter, i.e. wired ethernet and is achieving full speed on its own.
One thing to note is that you'll not notice too big of a speed boost if you are connecting to the internet. The reason being, your ISP has a throughput speed of say 25 MBits a sec down and 5 up (In a hypothetical situation). Your wireless is usually up to 54 (on wireless G), and wired is either 10/100/1000 MBits. However, you are still throttled by your ISP, who runs at 25. So tethering via USB won't net you faster speeds to Dropbox, but it might for local network related things, like streaming from a local PC, transferring files, RDP, etc.
Just a thought to share, hopefully it helps.
Oh, and running through the power line like that is a messy way to do it. Home power is noisy and slows down your network speeds. Just sayin', I hope I don't offend.

bump
This is the thread that keeps coming up in google searches, and since it was never answered, figured its time for a bump.
I´m in a similar situation atm, Ive got no access to data or wifi as Im traveling abroad.
Cyber cafes abound, and id love to use this app as well, but.. i get the same error.
Im surprised as id assumed CM would have all such features builtin. No big that it doesnt, im just not sure how to add it.
Any help?
(and yes, ive tried to get the other method working, but having trouble getting adb to detect the tablet, that method works on my phone, but id prefer a method that fakes 3g, since that other method doesnt work with many apps)
The problem is the to connect anything to the TP USB connector and get it to work needs power injected into the interface (hence the need for Y cables when using an OTG cable). This ends up as so complicated, that most give up and decide to use WiFi tethering. Also, I am not sure anyone has found a way to get the necessary drivers into the kernel.

[Q] Possible to connect AP or Router?

Hi all,
My first post after reading for a long time.
(Quick question)
Im wondering if anyone has or knows if its not possible to connect an AP or a wifi router to the Turbo through using the USB port?
(Long version)
My family has a condo at the beach and previously to owning my Turbo I used FoxFi full version to broadcast a wifi network for Netflix, my iPad, the Wife's iPad, etc. While not all at once this worked pretty well and saved the expense of purchasing access to the building wifi.
As you all know Foxfi wont work on the Turbo. But supposedly it still works via tether through the usb port. I work in IT so I was thinking, why not connect a driverless OTG so I could patch that to an AP or a older Netgear router that I have. Was thinking I would just plug the patch from the OTG to the "internet" port on the router and let everything connect to that.
While I know this is not a desireable solution, its one that would work for my one situation until someone figures out how to root the Turbo.
Thoughts?
I'm not so sure if that would work but I know PdaNet/foxfi has a feature that turns your laptop into a hotspot. I've tried using it and it's rather hit or miss but I think that's because of my laptop. It would atleast be worth a shot. It's called "wifi share" and can be found in the menu that you use to connect to your phone on your laptop.

Interesting. My theory was more like use a USB to Micro usb adapter to plug into a driverless USB to ethernet adapter. Then plug a patch cable from that into the "internet" port of a home wifi router. After that turn on FoxFi and use it via the USB tethering option.
Again I understand this is not a portable option, nor as simple as turning your phone into an AP at the click of a button. But for my next beach trip this would be pretty handy.
Before I buy the ethernet adapter, does anyone know if the USB tether to the router idea would work?
From what I know for any kind of internet sharing apps such as foxfi, you need the app or program on both the turbo and the receiving device. Those types of apps dont actually share internet to the device directly but through the connected apps. Think of it like cable in your house. You need the modem or receiver to translate the signal to watch it in your house. I would love this to work but I don't think it will.
