[Q] Help needed in combination of WiFi.... Radio.... oxygen1mod & USB adapter - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys and gals...
i've searched my query here in this forum but still couldn't find the exact solution.
Im pretty new to this entire "android" platform. just got my nexus one rooted and unlocked.
my only concern here is regarding "wifi Problem". I've got linksys Compact wirelss-G USB adapter (WUSB54GC).
Now I don't know how to access it just like a router.
Secondly, When i started using it with nexus one it connected without any flaw. But some days after It's not connecting with N1, having said that
I've also used this adapter with Ipad2 and sometimes the wifi doesn't connect to the ipad2 properly.
Now how I was connecting like I always delete the existing adhoc connection and create another one and then try to connect... after few tries it connects but after few days N1 says obtainig IP address... and in windows 7 the status says connected with "no network access"
I tried "WEP and other protocols" and also without any encyption as well but nothing is working here.
Actually In our country we dont have 3G network we're still on EDGE and that costs us much so here I'm relying on my home USB 1MB connection to use it via adapter.
Currently Im using Oxygenmod FINALE
Please help me whether it's my N1 or the adapter or should there be anything wrong with the Radio i've got v4.06. with oxygen1mod finale
Ask me anything If u feel.
And yeah BTW I didn't know that Android is an open source so u can call me a "Nwwwwweeeeebbbb"

I am not familiar with Oxygenmod, but if it is Gingerbread based, I would highly recommend updating your radio to 5.08.

Thanks... But let me update it that I've just updated to 5.12 radio... I was too curious that's y i played the bet. after update nothing seems to me different network signals are same i.e 100% blutooth working and havnt tried EDGE. WiFi still not working and stuck at "obtaining IP address"

I don't believe these phones have proper support for ADHOC, but it seems it is more of a computer problem if the ipad is having issues as well. Is there a reason you are trying to do an adhoc wireless network instead of getting a cheap wireless router?

well it's the first time I've got this USB adapter so I only know of this adhoc connection being made in win 7. havnt experienced a router though.
but could u please confirm if any cheap router supports my USB internet connection? (i dont have a DSL connection rather wireless)

I doubt any router would support the usb wireless adapter, but you can use windows internet connection sharing to share the connection through the wired connection. Then you can hook the router into your ethernet port on your computer and share the connection that way.
Definitely not the easiest, but I have never tried sharing an internet connection through an adhoc wireless connection.

I think I need to clear something here....
My ISP gave me a USB called (EVO), I just plug that "EVO" into my computer and I can download upto 3.1Mbps and browse and surf yada yada...
then I bought "linksys USB adapter" to make my internet connection WiFi.
Now how would I connect my N1 to internet via WiFi when u say "adhoc" is not supported.
Is there anything apart from what "Bassmadrigal" suggested.? (caz it sounds too technical for me)

I don't know if ADHOC is actually supported (and if it is, how well it is supported) on Android. But if you are having issues with devices other than your phone, then I think it is going to be a computer issue that probably won't be able to be fixed with any devices on your phone.
I can try to make it a bit more non-techincal...
Buy a cheap wireless router and use the router's guide to get a wireless network set up
Plug in the network cable from the computer's network card to the "internet" port on the router
Follow this guide to get Internet Connection Sharing up and running on your computer

Use Kaiser as Router??

I was thinking of using my kaiser to connect my pc to a wireless network,
I have a wireless router in my house but i dont have a wire that goes to my room, so i want to connect my Kaiser via usb to the computer and the Kaiser to the wireles router via WIFI so i can use the internet in my room in my computer.
Is it Possible?
I have a wireless modem option on my dutty 6 hybrid rom. I would think that that option could be tweeked to add an option to use wifi instead of cellular and then you would be able to recieve over b.tooth and wouldnt need a cable either. I would donate and then ask one of the devlopers very nicely if they knew of or could write a tweek for me. But thats just what my plan of attack wood be
It is possible and there is a reg hack that allows wifi sharing over ICS - but sticking a wifi usb dongle in the pc would be a lot easier.
As a second thought, it dawned on me that i hacked a linksys wrt54gs and changed the flash/os to dd-wrt`s 3rd party software
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Bridge
By switching to dd-wrt i then had an option to make the AP a wireless bridge and thats how i connect my slingbox to my network. I would recommend that anyone with a linksys router re-flash to this 3rd party software which enables TONS of features to this device. Hope this helps. PEACE!!
These might help you.

holy crap !
the jongma thing works perfectly with dutty's rom.
im amazed, my computer is connected to the internet via wifi signal that my phone is broadcasting. thats incredible.
on 3g its fffffffffffast!
Is there any way to use wifi instead of 3G etc? I have a Wii here at school with wireless. It wont connect to the schools wireless network because of the routers used. Im thinking if I could use the Kaiser to brodcast wifi and connect the Wii that way then maybe it would work? Any thoughts?

G1 wifi tethering for PSP or wireless game play

Stop Googling My Username, Stalker
See my post #2 in this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3219168). It appears that like the Wii the PSP cannot connect to AdHoc networks so follow the directions that require an existing connection.

The PSP can connect to AdHoc networks, but IIRC it's only used for multiplayer games. I don't think you can use the browser over adhoc. Granted, it's been years since I turned on my PSP and I never tried AdHoc mode, but /shrug.
gary actin like he wasn't part of the scene lol but anyways the psp won't stay searching long enough for it to find adhoc maybe i can code a app for hacked psp and wii to allow this (yessss i get to crack out the old sdk)

man that would be great if you could make an app
Like as noted above, PSP can do adhoc but it will not attempt an internet connection over adhoc.
I think one thing these tether-for-gaming threads fail to remember is that the ping over a tether connection will start at around 300-400 ms. A lot of games that only support adhoc play have little or no latency-compensation strategies and will be nigh impossible to play. Furthermore, unlike a wired connection to the internet, commercial cell networks are not designed to establish very robust connections. Those disconnections as G1 switches between 3G, EDGE, and no data (remember everytime you get a call, your data will be disconnected) would make keeping a stable connection difficult.
I have never lost data while during a phone call. This is not winmo, which u can not use data during a phone converstion...
I used to connect my PS3 via tethering, but it involved using a router.
Get your pc/laptop online via tethering. use an ethernet cable to connect the pc that is already online to the port on the router where you would normally connect the modem. Connect your PS3 to any of the other ports as if the router was online.
Go to network connections and bridge the connection between your active tethered internet connection and the ethernet port connection. Once the connections are bridged you should be able to get online via the ethernet ports on the router.
It worked for XP using my old sprint Mogul (or better known as the titan). I now have vista and haven't tried it out, but it should work just the same. I used to connect an xbox and a ps3 playing online via sprints rev. a speeds.

Man I didnt even think of bridging...but you are right. tried it and it worked...
i was worried about this too. Then lastnight moved into my new hosue with no internet.... Found 1 spot in room on top of Ps3 where phone got 3g.... Used pdanet through USB, then shared that connection, then conncted the ps3 through enternet and played Bad company 2 for 3 hours with no lag. Now I cant find that 3g spot for the life of me lol. Old house, built in 1927... lots of lead blocking signals.
Curious??
I wonder,...
Will the Wii / PSP pick up a standard wireless signal if you use a wireless router for this?

Connecting nexus one to Internet via USB

Before i unlocked and flashed my Nexus one, it was enough to connect my Nexus one via USB to my Laptop to use laptop internet connection.
The first time i did it, Windows installed a bridge network.
Now that i am using a customer ROM (CYA 5.5.0.3), it does not work anymore.
Any idea if it is removed from the custom ROM, or if i need any kind of menu to make it to work?
Thanks in advance
Cedric
any taker?
i cannot be the only one that is interested in this basic function?

Have you tried the Wireless tether application? It does the exact same thing as USB tether, but wirelessly:

i have same requirement. because 3g signal in my N1 is very unstable. wifi as is. so i have only connect to internet via notebook. This is the biggest problem of my N1.
did anyone ever figure out if this is possible?

[Q] Reverse Tethering

Hi all
is there a way to do reverse tethering on Milestone for surf the web using a notebook internet connection???
I don't think is because notebooks use a wireless receiver, not broadcaster (although it is still gives and takes - up and down).
Depends on how your computer is connected to the internet and its OS. Usually its no problem to share its internet connection through wifi. On Windows its called ICS (internet connection sharing, google it); on linux its possible as well, how you do it depends on your distro.
For Ubuntu: http://bigbrovar.wordpress.com/2009/01/17/share-you-internet-wirelessly-on-ubuntu/
For Windows (this is for XP, but should work the same on vista/7): http://www.geekyblogger.com/2008/05/sharing-internet-connection-using-wifi.html
(Your computer should not be connected to the internet via wifi when sharing internet over wifi!)
Sharing your Computer's internet connection through USB to your Milestone is not possible AFAIK.
Forgot about ad-hoc networks, android don't support it from what I remember.
They can beam out a adhoc network, but it wont show if you try searching for one.
my purpose is to have internet on milestone connected via usb cable to netbook which is connected to the net via wifi...

milestone has built in wifi... but i think there was a usb tethering app but i dont remember. i THINK cm6 or cm7 or something. i dont remember tho
Not possible, unless you have dual NIC (one for the receiving, one for transmitting) or someone comes up with a way via USB, but right now (after some Google-ing) no one has.

think about it - every internet connection has to recieve AND send some data, so ofc every notebook can receive and broadcast wifi signal
OP: try connectify

It makes no sense.. if you are able to connect via wifi with you laptop you can connect via wifi with milestone too.. if you need proxy auth you can use some advanced browser such as miren o dolphin...
It's sending data back and forth yes but it's also got to pass out IPs and tables (i.e routing traffic) (which I'm sure there is a program that can do that).
I should have explained myself a little better.
Just a side note, wireless extenders?
I have a DD-WRT extender is my room which extends my wireless network to my room.
Main Router --- Wireless --- DD-WRT Extender --- Wireless --- HTPC / Netbook / Milestone
Any reason why it can't be;
Main Router --- Wireless --- Laptop Running Some Software --- Wireless --- Milestone
Only issue I can think of (ofc) the speed will be halfed.
All the laptop would have to so is sort and forward the packets?

I'm not an expert on WiFi, but I think regular wifi cards can't do that, as you can be connnected just to one other wifi point. If I could use two (or more) access points at the same time I think it would be already in use to achieve better speed/ coverage
Me nether.
It's just the thought of me being able to turn a router into a wireless extender through some third party software which makes me wonder if it is possible but like you said it goes against everything I've ever read about wireless networks and equipment.
On a different topic, I have managed to get USB Tethering to work on the custom ROM that I am using now.

I have no problem connecting to an ad-hoc network with my Milestone running the latest FroyoMOD.
Some Routers support repeating (extending signal coverage). But AFAIK, as said above, you cant use your Laptop as a repeater since it can only handle 1 connection at a time. That means either connecting to hotspot or being the hotspot.

it has sense if i CAN'T connect to my university wifi network which use a wpa-enterprise connection... it works with all htc android phones and also on motorola defy but it doesnt' with milestones...
Maybe the phone (rom) doesn't support wpa enterprise encryption.
What is the most logical approach
if you're running windows 7, check out connectify, it does exactly what your looking for

1-Yes you can use a wifi dongle to share the interwebs with the x8.
2-Bluetooth is very slow and the cheap ones only have a few meters of coverage, you can buy a wifi pen for almost nothing and the setup is easier.
3-Adhoc is a direct connection between two devices of the same type (computers, phones, etc are clients, routers are access points). Connecting a phone to a computer uses an adhoc connection.
4- A dial up connection is an old way of connecting to the internet (there are several types of dial up) tru a phone line. The modem dials a number and establishes a very slow connection based on pulses. People like us don't use that anymore, only banks and such for secure "out of the web" data transfers..

It's very VERY easy with windows 7.
Read this tutorial: http://lifehacker.com/5369381/turn-your-windows-7-pc-into-a-wireless-hotspot
You can get a 150Mb N adapter on ebay for just $5 and it will work fine..
