Simple question - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm in Dallas and I get HSPA but for some reason I'm only getting 570k max download speed. Is there a way to get faster speeds like diff radio?
Sent from my Nexus One using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk

Realistically that's probably on-par for what TMO can provide in your area. They are working on adding more backhaul to towers to support the higher speeds.

Ah i see. So even though they have listed Dallas as one of the few H cities its still not optimal speeds as far as what they have said it should be ?

[Q] When 4g comes out for Captivate will we have to get new phones?

Can we just flash the LTE Modem or will we have to get new phones?
our phones do not have the required hardware to go 4g. i could be wrong but i doubt it. but who cares, by the time at&t actually gets a real 4g, we should all be ready to upgrade.
LTE and HSPA are different. As long as HSPA is pushed then we can go to the max of the phones hardware.

Was your old EDGE speed phone capable of getting 3G speeds? X-(
Of course ypur going to need a new phone with a 4G sim card.

Miami if you're not going to be helpful in Q/A then why post?
For 3G/4G you need to talk tech not blanket terms it would be easier to know what exactly you are asking.
HSPA+ LTE are the competeing tech one being a new tech (LTE) and one being an advancement of current tech (HSPA+).
Captivates can do um 7M using HSPA (double check gsm arena or the wiki or the manual for the numbers) so any upgrade to the network the device will top out at the max speed the device can support.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
Max speeds for HSPA are theoretical. TMO said they would push it up to and over the 50M level while currently upgrades to networks have it at 14-21M though because of the way it works you will not get those speeds real world.

Q: T-Mobile speedtest

Hello,
I am going to buy an international note.. what are its speeds for web browsing..
Speed test pics would be appreciated and videos
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
anyone have speed test pics??
It would really help me out.. I don't know if I should spend 700 on the pink note. If I'm gonna have super crappy internet
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
Well the speed for web browsing is really fast on HSDPA+ (The highest one that you can get here in europe)
Found a speedtest on a german android forum.
http://fs01.androidpit.info/userfiles/411957/image/galaxy note 749.png
Edit:
Remember, that's not the highest value. HSDPA+ can reach up to 21,1 Mbit/s here.
This was with an international note?
But idk if it be the same for T-Mobile since were on 1700mhz
If 9mbps was reached there.. hopefully here as well

So there is no 3G data (and upper I assume) available with the International Note. Any reasons for not taking the AT&T Note SGH-I717 instead?
So what were those speeds lol.. I gotta see some speedtests of someone using it on tmobile
Idc I'd get the att one.. but too overpriced .. if ima pay a lot for the phone I'm going to buy what I really want. And that is the Pink Note

But it actually shows the speed depending on his new radio.
All others were using AT&T on the Galaxy Note... Could even find a picture.
Also just read that you are able to use >3g, sorry for misleading informations.
lol so complicated as we don't have 4g here.

So buy a pink case or those sticker covers and you can make it pink. I'd rather have a fully functional device than a colored device. That is only if you need the speed. if not pink it up! Where I live I only get 3G. Not hspa+, when I go downtown I get hspa+ so it's not worth it for me nor a deal breaker.
Salutations from Madrid!

I use an n7000 on tmo stateside. Its only 2g so speeds are horrible... roughly 100 to 150kbps both up and down. This doesnt really matter to me however, as im in wifi 99% of the time. The 2g works fine for gps, email and mobile versions of websites. But forget about youtube, or full version website surfing. One thing i havent checked is pandora streaming... might work ok.

I have the international note, and for the most part I get around 256k speeds at best. Depending on where you are located though they have repurposed their 1700 band into their latest hspa+, so if you happen to end up in one of those area data will be really fast. (sorry never ran a speed test with one of those connections) The problem is that is was mainly an experiment and they most likely won't continue not that they are moving to LTE, and the areas with this working are fairly rare.

Post your Nexus 4 Speed Tests here!

This can be a great reference for people who are undecided on Straight Talk t-mobile network vs Native T-mobile network. We can also compare $30 unlimited plan to contract plan speeds.
Please Post:
Carrier: xxxxxxx (EX: T-mobile network via T-mobile, OR, T-mobile network via Straight Talk)
Plan: xxxxx (EX: $30 unlimited, OR, $45 unlimited)
Location: xxxxx (EX: Brooklyn, NY... OR Dallas, Texas)
Then please post a picture of your speeds (or you can type it out).
Thanks!!
I posted this on thread already.
I have straightalk i had att sim ordered tmobile sim and cut it down using the att sim.
ATT sim straight talk average download speed by speakeasy app 5-7 down .5-1.5 up
Tmobile sim average speed 12-15 mb down 1.5-3 up tested this today fort wayne IN medium size city I do get 4 bars for both networks at my house. and wifi speed 20-25 down 5up comast 2.5 ghz i dont use 5gz band really.
I love this phone, and T-Mobile

Me too, it's the best phone I've ever played with or owned, and I've been very promiscuous.
On 3 mobile, £15 per month pay as you go (off contract), all you can eat unlimited data bundle, I got this whilst walking about in the town. Why bother paying the 4g data premium?
Definitely the best speeds I've had in my area on tmobile

Not only good speed but also good latency considering I rely on Google Voice + Groove IP for VOIP. Tmobile looking good.

I'm in Tampa and on T-Mobile's unlimited value plan for $69. I'm pulling down 12-18 Mbps on average. Upload is 1.5-2.5 Mbps.
Thanks for the results. Now I'm even more anxious to get my Nexus 4. Those scores absolutely obliterate my scores on Sprint.

Did some driving around today, seems the speeds I posted are pretty limited to a small area here unfortunately. Most of the other places I tried were around 1 - 3 Mbps which is still better then what I get with Sprint (no 4g coverage here but I have to pay for it) just waiting until my contract is up to make the switch.

Just to add: Bell and Telus have a shared HSPA+ network that operates on both 850 and 1900. So unlike T-Mobile's, it has better in-building coverage and penetration. Same frequencies as AT&T but overall faster and less burdened. Lower burden due in part to the fact that there are very few customers with grandfathered unlimited plans of any kind - Canada saw its first iPhones launch with small data caps, while AT&T started with unlimited and only years later started to shrink the data allowance.
bump.. Anyone else? There's gotta be a lot more of us Nexus 7 3G owners out there by now.
att gave me horrible speeds, but tmobile gave me much better service. much happier now.
The employee at Tmo must have been unaware they had that plan, or else I might be using it. I should'a known tho because I thought I saw they had a tablet for sale! Anyway, I'm basically happy with 3gb for $30 with AT&T, but it's nice to have options.
does this device not have "H+" icon in the status and only shows "H"? I'm using the tablet plan on Telus in Canada and it only shows "H".
I have LTE signal when I plug in the sim card into my Nexus 5.
Any suggestions?

Today I Watched My Nexus 4 Get Genuinely Confused

So I'm on a road trip, and I brought my N4 (on T-Mobile USA) along for the ride. I decided to stay the night in Savannah, GA. After checking into my hotel, I took my phone out of my pocket and saw something I've never seen before. It was showing a data connection as "3G" rather than the usual "H" for HSPA or "E" for EDGE. I had to do a double take. Curious, I went to Settings-About Phone-Status and checked the network type. It was "UMTS:3". Obviously that means T-Mobile's network refarming has happened here and 1900 MHz UMTS is live.
Here's the thing, though. The radio keeps switching between "3G" and "H" every few seconds, seemingly unable to figure out which one it wants to hold onto. The phone is still usable but I still find it annoying. Of course, the vast majority of T-Mobile phones would never experience this since they hardly ever have support for 1900 MHz, but I'm curious if other N4 owners living in areas where T-Mobile has lit up 1900 MHz UMTS are having this issue as well? In the end, the phone may be usable, but the constant switching is playing hell on my OCD!!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
At least the refarming is done where you're at, I'm still impatiently waiting.

Yeah but at this rate I'm hoping they either fix this in a Nexus 4 radio update (maybe make it prefer HSPA over UMTS, but I don't know if that would cause problems outside the US), or never light it up in my home market. haha
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
I just came from Verizon of 12 years and a gs3. I'm on umts at my home in rural Atlanta ga. It does the same switching as you say. I just thought that was normal gsm behavior .... phone is idle then 3g is active. Phone queries the net (open browser etc...) and H kicks in.
On another note the H speeds here are almost equal to vzw lte, I'm impressed

Has the refarm taken effect by you?
My phone does this then pulls the h on demand I am in Detroit metro area. I still pull high download speeds and don't have a problem with the change over. Honestly until I read this post I thought this was normal. Do do a speed test see if it is slower or faster then your use to.

I find it wierd that you've never seen the 3G label. Normally you camp on 3G (UMTS) and it'll flip to "H" for HSPA+ when data's transferring either up, down, or both. This has been normal over the years, until there were modifications on T-Mobile's side to display 4G all the time for devices that were HSPA+ capable.

GS2, Samsung edited to reflect 4G. Most customers would be perplexed by the constant camping on 3G, then flipping to H (HSPA+ which is branded as T-Mobile 4G), so the just modified their network bits in their OS to reflect 4G all the time. As far as the Nexus S, that's just a 3G device not capable of the HSPA+ bandwidth (it topped out at 7mbps).

Sounds like you're running an AOSP rom on your N2. 3G for UMTS, H for HSPA+, and 4G for the LTE. If you were on a stock TMo ROM, it'd be 4G for UMTS and HSPA+, then 4G LTE for LTE.
Important to note is that the status bar icons ate just that. . .icons. You could actually modify these to display whatever you wanted. If I wanted it to say 8G when on LTE, I'd just have to make a custom icon and bake it in. Doesn't mean I actually have an 8G network.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium HD app
thats normal behavior, it changes to H when there is data flow. it just depends on the area and the signal/coverage in the area. on a custom rom, i see it change from a H to a H+ all the time(when data is flowing). rarely, i see a 3G.
