How are you guys recharging your HD2's? I've been relying on the USB connector at the bottom of the phone, but my concern is that after 'x' number of connects/disconnects that the socket will wear out as it started doing with my Kaiser.
Do you guys know of any pin-based adapter or battery hatch modification with external contacts that would enable us to lay the phone on a stand or platform without having to use the internal USB port on the phone which will eventually wear out? The 'powermat' would be great, but it's not available for the HD2. Does the new HTC car mount recharge the phone too, or is it just a bracket?
I'm thinking of something along the lines of how bluetooth headsets recharge, where the pins are external. It just worries me that the micro USB connector will eventually fail, which on a $700+ phone is not an attractive option.

The connector will not fail. At least unless you force/damage it yourself. It has been adopted as a connection/charge connector on ALL new phones now, of any brand, so you can bet they tested it thoroughly before.
If it fails.. well that's what the warranty's there for.
To answer the original question, I charge using USB, and also an external charger for my spares.

I understand your point, but to my way of thinking it's still a physical connector made of metal and plastic. It will fail eventually, trust me. These connectors are tested to withstand a reasonable number of connect/disconnect cycles for the average user. But cell phones tend to get used more, and this phone among other cell phones because of the cpu and screen will need to be recharged even more so.
Also, I'm not talking about the point of failure, but the limit of usability. The connector on my Kaiser got to the point where the cable wouldn't stay lodged in the housing and would drop out of its own weight. Although it still worked, it made for awkward handling while in the car trying to use a coiled charging cable that would drop out on its own.
So what I was looking for was a replacement battery hatch which would connect with the internal contacts, and a corresponding mount/dock of some sort so that it would minimize the physical stress of multiple connections and disconnections.

I just got the car mount today. It Does recharge the phone - there's a mini usb plug built into the bracket, and a lead plugs into the base of the bracket, and then into your 12v socket. A nice touch, the lead is actually long enough to be able to route it nicely.

Thanks, but what I was really after is a solution that does NOT involve the USB port on the phone.
I've seen battery chargers on Ebay. That's probably the only sensible solution if you're really that worried about the USB connector...
I think I remember reading something about some sort of wireless recharging pad that you can put phones and mp3 players on that would recharge them without any cables but I've got no idea if it would work on the HD2 or if they are even on sale yet.

Yes, the former is along the lines of what I had in mind. Just surprised that no aftermarket solutions have been developed for the phone to make it easier to charge without wearing out that micro-usb connector.
As the mini USB port is a standard size, (not just used by HTC) if you should ever 'break it', most phone repair shops will be able to replace it quite easily.
A lot less hassle than opening up your phone to plug things in the back.

I was wondering about the small grill holes on front of the Alpine cradle since I am using it. today I have finally opened it and that was a dissapointment, there was nothing attached to that grill as I was thinking it could be a microphone or a speaker. Have a look.

are there some adjustable elements? I am thinking, why my 4500mA battery does not work with it max capacity... It can not charge fully.
No Server, there were not any adjustable switches or jumper at all. This is just a simple 2 PCB cradle as you can see in the picture, 2 PCB (printed Circuit Board) one for phone and other for battery (indivisually).
Try to check your FULLY CHARGED battery with a voltage checking machine (Multi meter) and see if the mentioned "mAh & VDC" are giving the correct output, if not and if you have bought it recently, then try to talk to the seller.

My multimeter can not see any voltage on them at all!!!
Both battery somehow senses precence of the phone(so, in phone it works)...

If the phone is detecting the batteries that means obviously the batteries has got voltage in them, seems like you are not using the right setting on your multimeter, try to check any normal AA (normal household) battery and see if the multimeter is showing anything.

Yes, on normal battery and even on Siemens SX1's battery voltage shows.
But no voltage on Qtek battery. Using pin 2 and 3, 20V DCV setting on the multimeter.
I got a serial cradle some time back to permit me to sync. to Virtual PC (since the Connectix version didn't support USB). I was also curious so I looked - on the serial cradle, there IS a microphone behind the grill. I've not been able to do much with it but it is there.

Yes it absolutely does charge the battery, it also indicate by an ORANGE light where written "Aux Battery", and turns GREEN once fully charge.

The second slot will only charge if you have the power supply plugged in, it won't work off the USB alone. I have three cradles (two USB, one serial) - they all behave the same.

All working now thanks. I had been using a gash multi-voltage power supply from Tandy. When I brought the original O2 power pack down from the bedroom and swapped it, everything worked fine.

Those grills are for a microphone but this is not included in the standard cradle supplied with the phone. You have to order the special cradle from an O2 supplier. The spare jack socket at the rear is also designed to connect to external stereo speakers but again is missing in the standard cradle. Considering the price of the XDA it is sad to think they removed these minor items so that we would need to order another cradle at $60 if we wanted to use our XDAs as desktop music players. They saved a dollar in costs and removed much of the funtionality of the cradle.....

Now this might be pushing it but, it seems we have some chaps here that aren't to daft when it comes to electronics?! So what I'm thinking if someone has the cradle that does have the mic etc in it, then we could have a butchers at theirs, and retro fit ours?

I don't suppose you fancy taking the base off again?
I wonder if you could compare the insides of you serial cradle that has the mic with the insides of a USB that doesn't.
The reason I ask is I'm wondering if we'd find that everything is there for the mic/speaker on the USB version, just the mic is missing. If that was a case its easy to get hold of a mic and add it in yourself.
This has all suddenly reminded me of a article I saw when I first got my XDA, some chap saying that he was doing hands free at his desk using the cradle.

I purchased one of those docking stations with additional battery charger off ebay. However, for some reason the unit isn't charging the device when it's docked. Instead it loses power. I waited almost 2 months for them to finally ship the item now this. I was thinking it may be the 1.5ma adapter that came with it. My test this evening will be to plug up the regular charger in the mini usb port and see if that will charge the unit. Is anyone else having this problem? I was trying to cut expense by purchasing this unit instead of the more expensive ones sold on expansys for a little over $100 usd. I even went as far as implementing a 3.5 mm plug for audio (stereo) and this took quite a few hrs to do. Please give some feedback.

It charges my phone if I turn the backlight down, and dont run any data programs (gps, wifi or anything like that) If I run much of anything it will drain down. I attributed it to the charger cable that comes with it. Let us know how your tests go. I can voice for the xtra battery spot, it charges my spare in less than an hour from empty.

Thanks for the reply bud. I said I'll try the OEM charger in the mini port first, and if that works then I'll buy a higher milli amp charger for it (maybe 3 ma). I did a nice little audio mod to it as I discussed and I'll take pictures later when I get in. I really like the unit and the great thing about my audio mod is that it doesn't broadcast my calls over my A/V receiver, it goes directly to my BT headset (conversations stay private), and once I hang up the audio goes back to the A/V receiver, so I can continue listening to my music. The mod only cost me about $3 USD for the necessary parts and some soldering and drilling.
Here are the pics of the mod I did. The Audio works fantastic. I converted the 3.5mm plug to stereo output and well placed too as the device just slide right onto the docking station without any trouble. Now my next task is to find a 3 ma adapter to use as a charger. For some reason even when I use the OEM charger in the mini usb slot the device charges, but does it very slowly as if it was getting the charge from the computer's USB connection, and the 2nd battery slot doesn't charge at all with this method. If anyone would like internal pics (not that they would help much as I've soldered and hot glued all the wires in the device for stability) I will be more than happy to upload some.

I'm going to the province(the provincial life here is like 1980's there in the US except for mobile phones and a few computers with limited internet access) and I don't want to carry arround so many gadgets and attachments with me. I have 2 4G usb drives, 16G cf and a 2G mini sd. I keep my file both for business and pleasure outside of my athena for safety. As much as possible, I don't want to attach an external usb hub as it drains my battery. I would rather have an internal hub and changing the led to something smaller to consume less power but integrate them to the cradle.
As much as I want to bring my laptop to the province, the size of my ibm x40 is still to big and heavy for me to carry constantly everywhere.

I will upload some pics in a bit. I thought about putting in a 2nd USB slot, however now that you've mentioned the internal USB hub, you gave me a new task for tomorrow. I will go to Rat shack and try to find the smallest hub they have and take it apart and somehow get that bad boy to fit into the cradle. If you've researched any that's pretty small post the link and I'll take a look at it. Give me about 30 mins to upload some pics as I have to take the unit apart and stuff. Oh btw I had to strip the 3.5mm down to the bare metal from a cheap headset I had laying around.
The yellow plastic piece is where the stereo adapter is located. I had to shave down a piece of plastic on the insde that was kinda blocking the space. I also made sure that the unit was able to close properly. As you can see in the pictures there's no other wires for the unit to short out on and everything's secured properly with the hot glue, and some soldering.
Is the audio not availble via the usb plug? I was led to belive the usb to 3.5mm headphone adaptors work with the ameo? If this is correct and all the pins have connectors then the audio should be availble without adding a 3rd plug.
The genuine htc cradle does have audio out but looks like it only has 2 plugs so it must be possible?

Those 3 in 1 adapters do work, however I did the mod to eleminate the need to carry around any extra hardware. I used the 3 in 1 adapter in the usb slot from T-mobile wing phone and it worked just fine. It has the 3.5mm slot, and 2 mini usb slots. But again I did it this way to eleminate the need for that. I'm currently in the process of finding a small USB hub that I can strip down from it's housing and fit it inside the docking station. I already located a 3ma adapter with variable voltage settings. This should be good enough to run all the components and charge the batteries at the same time. Let me know how your mod goes or if you need some ideas.

I got in late yesterday, and wasn't able to check the size against the cradle. I see you have slots for a flash card reader on yours, the question now is, have you found a spot to fit all that in there? The size of the one I saw looks like it would work, but it doesn't have the card readers in it. I think that would be very ideal to have in there too. Let me see pics of the final product, if you can get it to fit, if you can't no biggy i'll just do without the card reader in it.

What was the solution for charging? Have you talked with the folks at gpsforless or HTC to see if they could fix there design, by using the designs that you have developed so far? Or are you interested in making a couple extra docking stations for a fee? Sometimes we have more time than money and other times we are starved for time... Lately, I have been starved of time...
Thanks for taking the time to develop a solution that I have been dreaming about, while on the road traveling, ect...
Part of the work around that I was using was BT audio recievers, they have been a great work around, but also have some limitations as well...

the usb hub works but it literally drains my battery so much that i prefer not to use it anymore.
has anyone seen an xperia cradle for sale ? i prefer having my phone sitting in the cradle whilst at work so that i can see the calendar / appointments, etc.
i realise the fact that the mini usb port being on the side means that it's unlikely that the phone can be charged whilst it's in the cradle ...

Yeah, I'm worried that with the position of the USB connector that it might not make cradle manufacturer's life easy for this phone. Is there president for a phone with a jack on the upper-side having a plug-and-charge cradle made for it?

i can't see how any design is going to allow anyone to just grab the phone and remove it without having to wrestle with a connector at the side of the phone. annoyingly, there is only one input which (obviously) is the sync cable meaning that it's charged via my usb port rather than the mains (i.e it takes forever to charge ...)
we bought two of them, one is working one not. So we ordered directly by the manufacturer obo Hongkong and they arrieved yesterday. Both do not work! No connection to the PC! Error messages!

I too was very suprised with the fact that I couldn't find any cradle which has a (as you call it) plug-in connection.
Enough reason for my to design and build one myself. I'm still in a very early stage of building, but I was wondering what would a cradle like that be worth for you guys, just to check if it would be furthwhile the make more than just one for myself.
They should just make a horizontal/landscape cradle that you slide out the keyboard and dock it like an UMPC. Honestly the vertical cradle looks hedious.

I'm with outie. The vertical docks look cheap and lame and don't show the X1 off to it's best, nor do they allow you to use phone the way it was intended.
We need a horizontal cradle that it can sit in with keyboard open like a real desk organiser. Hell, it even looks like Sony could have planned it that way by putting the sync connector on the bottom of the keyboard!
Got one directly from Brando (with spare battery). However it sucks ass. There are several kinds made by some OEM and it differs in number of ports. The Brando one has just one miniUSB input and the adapter just gives 1A. So you can only charge OR sync. So bit useless, as charging phone and battery through USB will take forever and charging phone and/or battery with that adapter would take also significantly longer, than the original CMU-20 and you cannot sync.
I saw one with two ports so you can sync and charge from your socket.. Wonder if mine can be opened and if it has also two ports, just hidden.
But hey, what do you want for 20USD?
I'm creating a new thread because I think my charging issue is unique...
My Kaiser will show an orange light and indicate that it's charging when:
1. Powered On and plugged in to: USB, AC power Adapter, or Car charger
but it will not take a charge and the orange light goes out after about two minutes.
2. Powered Off and plugged into: USB, AS Power, or car charger
but the orange light remains on and it never charges (tried 5 hours)
The device also does not sync, I don't see anything physcially wrong with the USB port, but it was damaged by water several weeks ago, it hasn't worked properly since.
I've been getting by with an external battery charger that I purhcased from Ebay.
Does anyway have any ideas? I've reflashed the device since then as well and there is no change in how it reacts to charging..

I have the same problem with my Kaiser but at least it charges with just one of my 5 AC power adapters. Not in my Car charger and not on a USB connection.
Maybe it has something to do with the small USB pins on the Kaiser which are not properly aligned. You can try to bend them.

Hello, I was having this same issue and (long story short) I believe that it is the small USB pins on the phone.
Here is what I found (sorry knda long post). I have two ATT TILT phones. My Original Tilt phone got soaked in water but I was able to almost salvage the phone by soaking it in Denatured alcohol and letting it dry. This 'wet' Tilt has all functions but cannot read sim cards. It does however charge perfectly.
The replacement Tilt I have works like a charm but refuses to charge. Regardless of USB charging, off the wall charger or car charger, the orange light comes on, says it is charging but in 2 minutes the light goes out. The phone is still listed as charging but I know it is not charging because the battery level continues to drain. The phone does sync to my PC and I am able to transfer files to/from my new TILT via a USB cable. Just cannot charge the device.
I have 3 batteries. 2 stock batteries and the large 3200mah battery. All three batteries will not charge on my new TILT. I tried charging it via USB connected to my Computer, Car cigarette lighter, Car inverter charger, official TILT charger from CINGULAR ATT. Completely unable to charge the device.
If I attempt to charge the batteries (all three of them) on my old 'wet' TILT the batteries charge regardless of what method I use. It will charge via USB connected to the PC, USB connected to wall charger, official ATT TILT charger, or car charger. No issues. So I know the chargers, cables and batteries do charge on a TILT. Both TILTs are official ATT TILT devices. Two of the batteries are stock and 1 of the batteries is a SEIDO 3200mah.
Sometimes I get lucky and the new TILT phone does charge. In these cases I charged the phone using the Wall charger and the battery was over 50% capacity.
Now I know the new Tilt USB port is working because it syncs to my PC just doesnt charge after 2 minutes (light goes out) and battery continues to drain (watched and tested this after 3 hours of observation). I ended up ordering one of those TILT USB connectors which have a 3.5mm headphone jack and USB port.

What is weird is that I can now charge my NEW TILT using the USB port on this connector with this connector attached to my new TILT. If I attempt to charge the TILT using the onboard USB port, it stops after 2 minutes and the light goes out.
Personally, i think it has something to do with the pins. Hope this helps someone.

Been there, had that problem and the solution was even simpler and didn't involve the charging/USB port at all. Get a cotton bud (US folks call them Q-Tips) and spray some contact cleaner on it (not anywhere near the phone) and use it to carefully clean both the gold strips/terminals on the batteries along with the gold spring terminals on the phone. Although they may look clean, invisible grime film can make the connection fail and cause this problem. This is also a good tip to follow with ordinary household battery rechargers and NiMH cells. I haven't had this problem since but still carry out a terminal clean every few months to be on the safe side.
My phone wouldn't charge anymore. Searching through threads I found a magnificent magnified picture of the mini-USB port and the way the right part of the port was bent down a little. It was exactly like that with my phone, I used the pointing stick to tilt it up a little (be careful it may break of the pins, and that would lead you far from home!), which fixed! Haven't had the issue since!

I had a similar issue with my Kaiser. It would charge with a USB cable and an ac adapter but not in the car. It used to but stopped. I took a dental tool and lifted the two little legs inside on the bottom of the mini usb port so they would contact the charger again and all is well.

I straightened up the last pin. I was beginning to think it was my AC Charger...I plugged it in my Ashtray charger and it charged without a problem. I will see if this takes a charge. I didnt use any denatured alcohol, I just took the compressed air canisters used for computers and cleared out the usb port....

Ok folks, buckle up. This is a weird one. So, my phone is in perfect condition, I've never dropped it, it's never been in or near liquid. About four or five days ago, when I was about to plug it in, I received the "moisture detected" message. Well that was impossible, because I had it on my desk the entire time, and there has been no liquid anywhere near it. So I assumed it was a glitch, and plugged it in, only to wake up to a dead phone. I then discovered, that it WILL charge, but only if the USB-C cable is flipped a certain way, which makes no sense to me, given that they are supposed to be reversable. The OTHER insane thing I've discovered, is that it will work BOTH ways, when plugged into a tablet with a USB port. So it seems to only be doing this with wall chargers. Any ideas?
It's very obvious your phone's jack is defective, and probably shorting out causing "moisture detection" errors. Tablet even on USB3.0 mode do not have the same electric potential (aka Volts) as a wall charger. It's usually 5x5V versus 1x120V maximums for wall chargers usually. This makes sense in your situation. The jack is for lack of better words crapping out. Use your warranty rights. Other case scenario (minor chance): your USB-C cable is bad which would explain the reverse issues.
This really isn't that weird in my opinion speaking purely from a Physics level.
Well it has only shown that message once, and not again. I just thought it was odd that it WILL charge with the USB-C inserted one way, but not the other. That's what was throwing me off.
Yeah not that odd assuming the jack is damaged or the cable. As then that can change electric flux around the magnetic field of the connector randomly (not necessarily side-specific). Try another USB-C cable just to rule out the cable and file for a warranty

I have bad luck with type c plugs noticing the trap much more dirt and pocket junk in them than type bs You might a bright lite and a sewing needle or something and make sure there is no debris in the port and or cable....
I use magnetic cables just to avoid wear and lint or dust in usb port, besides, where I live the ambient is very humid
question.... are you using the original cable that came with the Note 8, if not, try that and see if you still have the problem.
The moisture detected notification could be caused by the cable or it could be a software problem, I had that issue and phone was sent in for warranty to get it fixed.
if you get the moisture error again you can still charge the phone by turning it off and then just as you switch it back on you plug in the charging cable

What adapter do you use? As in what brand magnetic tip sits in the device?
