Reverse tethering or.? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to reverse tether.?
Example: I am in a place with only Edge or almost no signal. I have my laptop connected to a 50Mbit cable connection.
A router is not a option.
I would like to connect the Nexus to the laptop and use that as a router and Dl through that...to the phone.
Is that possible.?
Can I Dl from marked without a signal on the phone.?

find a program that allows your pc to send out a wifi signal; im not sure if they really exist though.
Im not sure if its possible to bridge a connection via usb either...

Huh? Is standard on wm6(with usb). Try ad-hoc wifi with laptop. Greets

Connecting nexus one to Internet via USB

Before i unlocked and flashed my Nexus one, it was enough to connect my Nexus one via USB to my Laptop to use laptop internet connection.
The first time i did it, Windows installed a bridge network.
Now that i am using a customer ROM (CYA 5.5.0.3), it does not work anymore.
Any idea if it is removed from the custom ROM, or if i need any kind of menu to make it to work?
Thanks in advance
Cedric
any taker?
i cannot be the only one that is interested in this basic function?
TX
Have you tried the Wireless tether application? It does the exact same thing as USB tether, but wirelessly:

did anyone ever figure out if this is possible?

[Q] Reverse Tethering

Hi all
is there a way to do reverse tethering on Milestone for surf the web using a notebook internet connection???
I don't think is because notebooks use a wireless receiver, not broadcaster (although it is still gives and takes - up and down).
Depends on how your computer is connected to the internet and its OS. Usually its no problem to share its internet connection through wifi. On Windows its called ICS (internet connection sharing, google it); on linux its possible as well, how you do it depends on your distro.
For Ubuntu: http://bigbrovar.wordpress.com/2009/01/17/share-you-internet-wirelessly-on-ubuntu/
For Windows (this is for XP, but should work the same on vista/7): http://www.geekyblogger.com/2008/05/sharing-internet-connection-using-wifi.html
(Your computer should not be connected to the internet via wifi when sharing internet over wifi!)
Sharing your Computer's internet connection through USB to your Milestone is not possible AFAIK.
Forgot about ad-hoc networks, android don't support it from what I remember.
They can beam out a adhoc network, but it wont show if you try searching for one.
my purpose is to have internet on milestone connected via usb cable to netbook which is connected to the net via wifi...

milestone has built in wifi... but i think there was a usb tethering app but i dont remember. i THINK cm6 or cm7 or something. i dont remember tho
Not possible, unless you have dual NIC (one for the receiving, one for transmitting) or someone comes up with a way via USB, but right now (after some Google-ing) no one has.

think about it - every internet connection has to recieve AND send some data, so ofc every notebook can receive and broadcast wifi signal
OP: try connectify

It makes no sense.. if you are able to connect via wifi with you laptop you can connect via wifi with milestone too.. if you need proxy auth you can use some advanced browser such as miren o dolphin...
It's sending data back and forth yes but it's also got to pass out IPs and tables (i.e routing traffic) (which I'm sure there is a program that can do that).
I should have explained myself a little better.
Just a side note, wireless extenders?
I have a DD-WRT extender is my room which extends my wireless network to my room.
Main Router --- Wireless --- DD-WRT Extender --- Wireless --- HTPC / Netbook / Milestone
Any reason why it can't be;
Main Router --- Wireless --- Laptop Running Some Software --- Wireless --- Milestone
Only issue I can think of (ofc) the speed will be halfed.
All the laptop would have to so is sort and forward the packets?

I'm not an expert on WiFi, but I think regular wifi cards can't do that, as you can be connnected just to one other wifi point. If I could use two (or more) access points at the same time I think it would be already in use to achieve better speed/ coverage
Me nether.
It's just the thought of me being able to turn a router into a wireless extender through some third party software which makes me wonder if it is possible but like you said it goes against everything I've ever read about wireless networks and equipment.
On a different topic, I have managed to get USB Tethering to work on the custom ROM that I am using now.

I have no problem connecting to an ad-hoc network with my Milestone running the latest FroyoMOD.
Some Routers support repeating (extending signal coverage). But AFAIK, as said above, you cant use your Laptop as a repeater since it can only handle 1 connection at a time. That means either connecting to hotspot or being the hotspot.

it has sense if i CAN'T connect to my university wifi network which use a wpa-enterprise connection... it works with all htc android phones and also on motorola defy but it doesnt' with milestones...
Maybe the phone (rom) doesn't support wpa enterprise encryption.
What is the most logical approach
if you're running windows 7, check out connectify, it does exactly what your looking for

[Q] Reverse Tethering a PC to a Tab

I believe it is possible for a laptop to get internet access from a tab though the USB tether, Is it possible for it to be reversed?
Recently I broke the wifi trying to get it into ad-hoc mode, so I can't use the wifi to connect to the internet, marketplace, etc.
Is there a way for me to get a connection from my laptop to the tab?
Im on FROYO 2.2
Thanks,
~404
Do you mean use your laptop as the wifi access point? In that case you will have to replace the default wpa_supplicant file. Search for the thread here....
Not as a wireless access point. I believe normally, you use the USB cable to get the internet on your computer from your Tab Data plan (Correct me if I am wrong)
So, I was wondering if you could use the internet connection from your laptop and forward it to your tab through the USB cable.
I use my tab as a wireless access point several times already-mostly at work because of network restrictions at the office.(Settings/wireless and networks/Tehtering and portable hotspots)
I don't know if you can use USB tethering from laptop to tab-probably not.....
Hi,
You can get a form.of reverse tethering over WiFi by using an application called Connectify (works best on Windows 7). Install Connectify, tell it which connection you want to share, then connect to the created hotbot on the Tab.
Obviously, if your Wifi is properly broken this isn't particularly useful, but Im not aware of any way that the USB interface could be used for tethering in that direction.
Hope this helps...

Yed as agc93 said, connectify shares your pc internet connection through wifi. You need to setup static ip address in the galaxy though.
Good luck

Kies Air to connect to Ad-Hoc instead of Router

Hi, is there a way to connect to Ad-Hoc network on a laptop rather than connecting to Router when using Kies Air? I don't have a router at home.
Use Connectify on PC to make your laptop a Wifi hotspot
And then use AirDroid from Android market
Thanks bro. Will give this a try.
Is it possible to use Kies Air instead of AirDroid?
Connectify just creates an ad-hoc which was what i do using windows 7 easily and AirDroid still needs a wireless router to connect to. Ayone has another solution?
bump. i am still unable to get ad-hoc to work on my G Note.

[Q] Using the Note as a modem for a router

My internet connection is down and right now I'm using my Note as a modem for my computer. But when I'm doing this I cannot access my LAN (of course). Is there a way to use the Note as a modem for my router so I can connect my computer through the router and have both internet access and LAN access?
My router is a Cisco E4200.
Just checking, what were you using to connect your computer to the router before using the note, what other devices are there and what are they connected by?

My computer connected through WLAN to the router. I have several other devices connecting with a mix of cable and WLAN to the router.
hmmm...
ur phone has usb tethering capability.. y dont u utilize it as it will use the usb port
and u can still connect to ur LAN using wifi
True. That is acceptable, but that would leave all the other devices without a connection. How do I connect through USB? I have activated USB tethering in the phone and connected it with a cable but nothing happens. I'm using OS X.

Presuming DHCP is obtained through the router or manual and the router can handle switching an ethernet cable from the mac to the router would work.

EDIT
Just read up, you wanted to give all of the devices on your network an Internet connection through your note?
EDIT
It is possible to do it from the computer if that's the case but for the sake of simplicity let's first connect the note directly to the router.

That would be nice, but mainly I want to be able to access internet and my LAN from my computer.
Connect via wifi tethering. You should be able to access ur LAN via cat5 cable.
If not, RECONFIGURE your router to the same IP rangr used hy ur note.

Never found a cable which I could try with and now my normal connection is working again so really dont need it. But thanks anyway and I will try all this next time.
