Question regarding Google Voice - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a question regarding google voice (I know, you wouldn't be able to tell by the title right?)
Anyway, somewhere I saw that when you recieve a call from Google Voice, a little white box comes down letting you know you're getting a call from google voice. I don't see that. In fact, I have two options, either I see it coming in as my google voice number (which doesn't let me see who is calling), or I have the number come in straight (which means I can't tell if it is google voice or regular number).
What I mainly use it for is Google Voice is my business number, while my personal number is well.. my personal number. Anyone have any pointers?
~Navik

go to google.com/voice
settings>calls
if you want to know that it's from google voice that the number is calling, set it to caller id (in) > display my google voice number. but, you won't know who it is that's calling, only that they're calling from gv

then after you do the above turn on the caller presentation in the options where you have to press the 1 to answer the call

I guess what I'd like isn't possible as of now. There should be a way for the phone to tell if a call is coming via google voice (since it is coming through the data) and distinguish it as such. I'll keep playing around with it for now I guess.

Google voice doesn't use data for calls, currently.

this is a fact
what i meant with the caller presentation is it will make the person speak their name and when you pick up the phone you will hear "Call from..."persons name" press 1 to answer the call, " and then it gives you some options such as sending to voice mail and listening in on the call while they leave you a voice mail

GV help...

How do I get the voicemails from people who call my regular cell number to show up un my google voice thing?
naw you can't do that... give your gv to everyone if you don't want to check both the "messages" and the "voice" inboxes...it works out though...e.g., i give my gv number to everyone but my family so the gv inbox stays uncluttered...
yes, its very easily done.
In your Google Voice settings you can add your phone number to the account. You can then 'attach' that phone number (your original) to the google voice number just for voice messages. If you are using sprint there is a specific link in google voice that will send you the number you need to dial in your phone. Once you do that it will be set up. You then just go into your Call Settings and set Google Voice as your voicemail provider.
Done and working here...
Awesome worked great. Thanks so much
ooops misread and thought you were talking about sms !
Edit: actually you can forward those from GV to regular inbox, not the other way around though...
how do i change my voicemail greeting though?
I don't like it when i call and I hear "thanks for calling a google voice mail user" blah blah ...

Why don't you go looking around in your settings and read up on some of the features of google voice?
One of the nicer things you can do is have different greetings for different people or groups of people.
You can do some other pretty cool stuff if you get a google voice number and start using that as your main number.
if you record your name,,, she will say "someonesomewhere" is not available but if you record a totally different greeting then you'll just replace her entirely...
i changed the greeting for the google number..
but when I call my sprint number i get that google message as well....
dmitrian ..I am going to try that right now..thanks!

google voice

ok google voice completely took over my phone. it used to be with my nexus 4 and 5 i would have the app installed and i was able to make calls with either my google voice number or my actual cell number now its just my google number... is there any way around this? i really dont want to get rid of google voice but if there is no workaround i will have to

Are you fully integrated? I had problems with GV a few months back. Had to disable completely through the .com and then removed the app. After that I reinstalled the app and did not do full integration. In rereading the other poster's comments I think you were right, it sounds like he was referring to the app not the .com. My bad.
D
Try deleting the Apps cache and data and that should start setup again.
yup i probably gotta uninstall and not integrate i think i did that thanks guys
fixed it. it was integrated with sprint pressed ok too fast or something when i first set it up i got it set up the way i like thanks guys
Uninstall voice then reboot. Then reinstall. When configuring (normal setup it does) you will be giving an option to choose when google voice makes calls. I choose "international only" and now my normal cell number is active but hangouts dialer works for gvoice number.
There is also an option in hangouts to ring voice directly to hangouts. Uncheck it if you want.

Nexus 6 (unlocked) Google Voice not working (sim card is verizon)

I recently purchased a Nexus 6 (unlocked) off of the play store. My carrier is Verizon so I took my existing Verizon nano sim card and popped it in and now I am up and running. I want to use Google Voice for my voicemail instead of having to call and check it through verizon. I have an actual google voice number, but I don't want to use that I just want any calls to my mobile number to use the google voice greeting/inbox.
On my previous phone I used the Verizon Basic Visual Voicemail. Normally when I install Google Voice and go through the configuration setting it as the primary voicemail option in the settings it automatically switches over and when someone calls they hear the greeting "The google subscriber you have reached.....". In my case with the Nexus 6 people still hear my Verizon greeting no matter what I do and I keep getting a notification to download the Verizon Visual Voicemail App from the play store to check it. I refuse to do this, the point of me getting this Nexus 6 was to do away with any Verizon garbage.
Has anyone else gone through this? On my past 4 phones I have simply been able to download Google voice, install, configure, and it overrides the Verizon voicemail. The only thing I can think of that is different this time is that I am subscribed to the verizon basic visual voicemail from my previous phone because I wanted to give it a try.

My first suggestion would be to be sure you are unsubscribed from the Verizon VM on your account. Then, open your dialer, click the 3 dot settings button, click settings, then select calls. Click voicemail, then service. See if you have any options there. I'm on Sprint and Google voice integrates through my carrier so that is the only option I see in that location. (Your carrier).
Then you can click set up, there you could manually set your Google voice number as your voicemail number.

After further research I am pretty sure I have to put my sim chip back into my LG G3 and cancel my verizon VM subscription. Then put the sim back in my Nexus 6 and go through the Google Voice setup process again. I just didn't think Verizon would have control over it somehow after subscribing to their visual voice service.
Also, open Google voice from a desktop PC or desktop view and ensure you've completed all the steps to integrate.

There really aren't any steps.. I logged in and it shows my Google Voice # and then my Mobile Verizon #. I definitely don't want to go through with the Google Voice activation process to my phone because then it forwards all calls to my Google Voice #. I just want to use Google Voice for my voice mail which should have nothing to do with my GV # and the only thing I should have to do in the settings is update my greeting. The reason I know nothing should have to be touched is because on my past 4 phones when I wasn't a subscriber to Verizon Visual Voicemail, Google Voice would install and configure with no problem. Of course that message would come up saying Google Voice is not compatible with my carrier (Verizon) but it would just start working anyway.

Well, I'm glad you figured it out for yourself. Good luck! :good:
Here is a paste from another thread. With voice over LTE a lot of things don't work right and you have to forward voicemail to Google Voice to make it work.
—-----------—
If you are having trouble configuring Google Voice as your voicemail service on Verizon you can make the switch manually by dialing all three of these activation codes:
*71[Your Google Voice number]*-- This turns on Conditional Forwarding, which should transfer*calls to your Google Voice number when your Verizon phone is*busy or unanswered after 3 to 6 rings.*90[Your Google Voice number]*-- This turns on Busy Transfer, which transfers all calls that would hear a busy signal to your Google Voice number.*92[Your Google Voice number]*-- This turns on No Answer Transfer, which*transfers all calls unanswered after 3 to 6 rings to your Google Voice number. To Deactivate the Call Forwarding, dial *73 [Send]To Deactivate the Busy Transfer, dial *900 [Send]
To Deactivate the No Answer Transfer, dial *902 [Send]

Yes, this. Google Voice voicemail never worked for me on Verizon unless I did these steps, even before VoLTE came along.

Google Voice & DOK2

Anyone here on DOK2 also a Google voice user?
I am having a strange issue when trying to "Call with google voice".
The call start during the prompt where you choose whether to "call with google voice" or "call without google voice" instead of waiting till you choose one of the options.
Because of this it always calls without google voice.
To all DOK2 Google voice users, your feedback is valuable.
Maybe you should update to Google Hangouts. It works perfectly for both texts and calls. I haven't touched Google Voice since I started using Hangouts.

Oh yeah dude, 100%. When you log in with your Google account, it will automatically use the Google Voice number associated with that account. And you can do text and group messaging, mms, video hangouts, and voip calls all through the one app.

Yeah Google voice # plus hangouts is a great combo.
I can confirm, it dials straight out with your carrier number no matter what option you choose. Hopefully there will be a fix.

Use hangouts dialer. It will call out from Google voice numbers. I use it every day. On newest DOK build.

I understand that. I have a voip pbx server setup. I would like to use the minutes which are allotted to me each month. Using Hangouts doesn't help with that.
I appreciate the reply, I'm just confirming that there is an issue.

R u calling over seas? Using hangouts with a google voice number, has unlimited calling between USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Unless you are running a call center I don't see the need for the pbx server setup anymore.
Using hangouts limits me to just my cell phone. All the extensions in my home are setup with voip.
have some problem too here is a work around for now. https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/voice/7v4o62rCRfI;context-place=starred
T-Mobile - Note 4/5/Edge - Update to 5.1.1 - Error on outgoing calls with Google Voice by setarcoS Dec 1
ADD A REPLY
Original Post: I'm on a Samsung Note 4 that was just upgraded to 5.1.1, and now when I attempt to make outgoing calls, I get "call not sent" and the call automatically gets made with my regular carrier number. I am still able to send/receive text messages, and check on voicemail's.
I tried rebooting, clearing the app cache/data, removing the sim, changing networks and nothing - the same error "call not sent" keeps appearing.
I've been using google voice for many years now since invites went out and never had this issue when changing phones.
Need help figuring out what is going on.
Device: Samsung Note 4
OS: Android 5.1.1
Network: T-mobile network
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Devices affected: Note 4, Edge, Galaxy S5, Note 5
Status: Waiting for a fix.
Work around #1: Connect through Google Voice (via Sheelendra Singh)
Dial your GV number
Hit the asterisk (*) key when the GV greeting comes on (skip this if you set your phone to go directly to voicemail access)
Enter your PIN, then pound (#)
Press 2 to place a call
Enter the phone number followed by pound (#)
Work Around #2: Dial through Hangouts
On your Android device, open the Hangouts Dialer app .
Type the person's name or phone number, and select them from the search results. Or to dial a number, touch the dial pad icon Dial pad icon at the bottom of the screen. Then dial the phone number you'd like to call, and touch the phone icon .
Work Around #3: Dial through web browser on phone (via Nick the greek 123)
1. Go to Web browser on your phone
2. Go to https://voice.google.com and sign in
3. Use the dial key pad provided.
4. When you dial the number google voice will call you first from your google number, answer it to connect to the number you dialed.
Work Around #4: Force calls through (via Steven McDonnough)
1. GoogleVoice has to be set to "Always Ask"
2. You have to set "Power Button" to end calls (Settings -> Personalization -> Accessibility -> Answering and ending calls -> End calls by Pressing the Power key)
3. Once you place the call, immediately hit the POWER BUTTON THEN quickly hit "Use GV". That will end the direct dial from your phone AND enable the GoogleVoice dialer.
Things you can do to help:
Contact T-Mobile and help make them aware of what is going on.
- Ask to be transferred to "tech support department."
- Explain the issue and tell them there is already an existing ticket for this known issue.
For all who call support and they ask you to uninstall, reinstall, factory reset, clear cache, etc. Don't bother. It won't help. These are irrational, standard support scripts used when they don't nearly understand the cause nor the solution.
Log into https://voice.google.com and use the "Send Feedback" link at the bottom left of the page" to help make them aware of what is going on.
Contact Samsung support and help make them aware of what is going on.
If you contact T-Mobile, Samsung, or Google Voice, be sure to mention this thread:
For reference, the URL they need is: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/voice/7v4o62rCRfI/8E2xx0hEDAAJ
And this is the thread in particular: 7v4o62rCRfI/8E2xx0hEDAAJ

PaulisHere contacted T-Mobile and filed a report regarding the issue. They recommended everyone with the same issue contact them and mention this reference number to add them to the ticket: 745440721951644352 (my t-mobile rep couldn't find the ticket as they are normally 10 digits long)
I contacted T-Mobile and they said they are working with Samsung and Google (Android OS I presume) and are hoping for a patch/fix within 7-10 business days.
2015/12/09
PaulisHere opened a new ticket # 14060725
I also have this problem. I don't like having to use the hangouts dialer, but, it's what I have to do for now.
I called Tmo biz class support and as expected they were useless and are pointing fingers at Samsung and GV.
I called Samsung support and as expected they were useless and are pointing fingers at GV.
Contacting Google's support is harder than shouting into a black hole.
Anyone else have any idea about this?
I notice that TEKXodus has the a new dialer that is video calling capable and Google voice works properly.

Google Voice not working

this device's Skinned OS has issues with Google Voice.....
it states "call not sent" when trying to connect using Google Voice app, and routes call through normal number
must use Hangouts for GV calling no integration with phone app,
gorgeous phone, that kills it
hopefully we can get CyanogenMod 13/14 for this thing.. :/
Yeah the lack of google voice support is a real pain with this device. As a dedicated voice user I've spent a lot of time searching and hacking around with it trying to get the best functionality I could. Here's the best solutions I've come up with
Voicemail
I have managed to get conditional call forwarding to work to push my calls to my google voicemail using mmi codes, the settings in the dialer app were useless for this. The following mmi code is what did it for me, it seemed that changing the ring delay was important too which is the last number in the code.
Open the dialer and type in the following code replacing the xyz with your google voice number. The phone should tell you it's running an mmi code, that it was successful and that the ring time was changed as well.
**004*+1xxxyyyzzzz*11*25# (replace the xyz with your google voice number)
Making Calls
So far there is no true solution for this but this is the best workaround I've come up with so far. Other than using the hangouts dialer app which uses data for calls (not ideal unless you're on wifi)
1. Go into settings > accessibility and turn on the toggle for power button ends call
2. Make sure google voice is set to ask on every call. google voice settings > Making calls > Ask every time I make a call
3. make a call as normal from the dialer but as soon as the call starts hit the power button to end the call
4. the gv menu will still be up asking you whether you want to use google voice or your carrier number
5. select google voice and the dialer will complete the call with your gv number
It's not the most convenient solution but it works until (hopefully) something better comes along
hey guys, not sure if this is helpful but I flashed the stock modded GV apk (you can find it here on XDA, won't let me post links). After that, using the GV interface if you go thru history and click on the phone # through there, it will work as intended and make calls using the GV #. I guess you'll just have to use the GV app as your contacts and dial thru there.
