help me speed up my nexus - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey so i had my nexus day one and it felt pretty fast but now after watching videos of the new samsung galaxy S and the new Motorola Droid X i feel like my phones just dragging itself along. mostly its on the homescreen when i swipe to go to the next page and it just doesnt feel as smooth. can you guys give me some tips to get things going a bit smoother. or is the nexus one just bound by hardware limitations. I'm on stock 2.1 unrooted AT&T nexus one. heres a video of the droid x just to put me down
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nixJR_QNibg

If you want a responsive launcher/homescreen, download LauncherPro Beta or ADW.Launcher from the market. Both are very snappy and offer a lot of features.

ADWLauncher

I don't know if you ready to root, if you do you can use cyanogenmod. For me it's a lot better than stock rom.

Don't use Live backgrounds!
I believe that a froyo rom with launcherpro is the speediest thing you can get.
I'm with cyanogen 5.0.8 + awdlauncher and i'm very happy with it. It's fast with benefits

most definently aint hardware. I meant what do the other phones I.E. Galaxy and droid x got in it to make it faster?
N1 is still a rocking phone and Im on froyo using Launcher Pro Beta and it flies. Definitly cany get any faster. Well it could but then Id miss infor it would go so fast. lol

adw is cool. just seemed to kinda hang sometimes on the first swype from after being in a app. Just kinda takes a second then responds, then there after it responds fine. So I switched back to Launcher pro and hes got alot of options like ADW. I Personaly like Launcher Pro better.
But yea, I dont think the new phones have anything better except maybe a slightly better processor clocked at the same speed as the n1.
I see many people wanting the latest toy. I for one am done looking for a while. My n1 does everything I need it too and at a very fast speed. These phones coming out now still benchmark just around the n1.
I dont know. there all great phones coming out. But nothing to want to get rid of my n1 for. Ill wait for taxes and see whats out then..

wait for froyo, massive homescreen speed increase.

sounds impressive. But read the comments. Looks like some is made up.
Im sure itll perform well and maybe slightly better. But as far as what there saying.
its not gonna be too big of a deal. But its still a impressive device and If ya want a galaxy or droid x. There sweet phones. I just still dont see anything about it wanting me to ditch my n1. I honestly think Ill have this till next year.
Not only that but tmobile is not getting any android phones soon. N1 is it for me.
Conclusion. Sweet processor, but is it really all its cut out to be? only time will tell, even if not, its still a nice phone. Super Amoled? Awesome..
THIS DUDE SOUNDS LIKE HE KNOWS WHATS UP.
The whole article is full of trash data.
The iPhone 3GS puts out 7m triangles per second per GLBenchmark (Google “GLBenchmark iPhone 3GS” and click the 3D tab), which is a PowerVR SGX 520 at 200 Mhz or 530 at 100 Mhz.
Ofc the SGX 530 puts out 14 m triangles per second (twice the performance of the 520).
The Hummingbird doesn’t have an SGX 540, as it puts out only 28m triangles per second (twice the performance of the 530), not 90.
Ugh. Now this article is all over the internets and every iPhone 3GS user is feeling smug. Like we needed more of that.

LG OPTIMUS 2x CHOPPY-DONT BUY

Hi,
i just got this phone and i was really excited but then it all went wrong
Unlock screen is choppy
I found the menu preview is so choppy
Sliding to the next screen is choppy
The camera loads after ages and takes photos ages after u click the camera button
The camera is no good all images come out soft and all eyes in the images turn out white.(Someone reported that removing the back cover makes the images shaper, Its true, try it.
The extra layer of software by LG on top of the vanilla causes this problem.
Great hardware and AWFUL LG software.
The dual core is useless, Multitasking takes longer than the HTC phones. the widgets are awful, there is not facebook integration like some HTC phones so u end up with duplicate contacts and have to merge them manually.
PLS THINK B4 YOU BUY I AM RETURNING MINE.
NEXT .....SAMSUNG GALAXY S2.
Try another launcher
Before returning your device, I suggest you try another launcher program. Launcherpro Plus works like a dream on my 2X.
Not to make excuses for them but I didn't expect much from LG, software-wise; they're new to this. It takes time for a company to get their software right -- a good case in point is HTC with Sense. Their first Sense implementation (back during their WinMo days) was laggy and buggy but after years, they've gotten to the point where their UI is actually ported by custom ROM makers to non-HTC handsets. Touchwiz has also gotten better (although I jettisoned it from my Galaxy S) but Motorola, which is still relatively new to the "skinning" paradigm still needs work on their Blur interface.
On top of that, the LG widgets actually work pretty well on LP-Pro, so you don't lose the use of the nice weather and clock widget as well as the calendar/agenda widget.
Also, while I too am interested in the Galaxy SII, after handling a prototype and comparing it side-by-side with my 2X, I think I'll still with the 2X -- the build quality is just so much better; Samsung can't escape their plastic-y phone design philosophy. To be fair, the GSII is a lot classier-looking than the original GS but neither is close to the 2X.
It's a shame really -- plenty of Samsung products are seeing great improvements in their design.
Besides, with a resource like XDA-Dev, it's only a matter of time before a truly excellent custom ROM enters the scene.

Hey pall..
Go to the dev section, install clockwork, boot up a custom rom problems solved U will go to the moon and back.. or if thats too much trouble install launcher pro and a alternate email program of your choice if you are too dumb to find the settings/read this forum to find where the settings are.... kgo! Also the picture quality is boosted alot by changing certain settings, again these are found by reading.. have fun and good luck ..

yes, unlock screen is choppy,
but app menu is definitely as smooth as butter,
homescreen become smooth after I remove the weather widget and replaced it with a better looking widget
so if u are saying that your app menu is choppy, something must have seriously goes wrong.

don't expect samsung's software would be any different. their touckwiz is as unpolished as LG's UI, heck might be even worse.
that's why i salute t-mobile by putting a stock android on the upcoming G2X. instead of the lg's UI.
Just use Launcher pro and everything willl be super blazing fast.
Let's just wish LG would do a better job on the 2.3 fw update.

Thrill 4G kills all the phones

Hi to all of you.
The LG Thrill 4G kills all the phones I had until now with build quality and speed even the paper phone Galaxy S 2. This year I tried, here we go Nexus one, G2, Mytouch 4G, Galaxy s Captivate and Vibrant, G2X, Htc Sensation, Atrix 4g, Infuse 4G and still have the Nexus S just for having the most up to date software. How you guys feel ? don't you think its a better phone in general even its on 2.2 which is not a problem because in general I don't see there is a huge difference between 2.2 and 2.3 for me.
Love the screen, speed, build quality, plays any video without a problem, the sound, the only thing I see now is the battery draining fast but it will get better in 2 weeks once it goes true couple of cycles of charges, please share how you feel thanx.
Just loving the phone that's all

so far i have to disagree.
Ive had the Atrix, Inspire, Infuse, & Captivate this year.
This is my least favorite of all of them.
Horrible battery, Delayed response on wake, outdated OS, gets hot, etc etc.
As soon as the GS2 releases ill be switching.
The 3D is a gimmick and will never be anything more than that on a cell phone.
I do agree with you on that. Im getting 2800 on my bech mark which is pretty good for froyo. I like the omap processor better then the others. This chipset has the same gpu that samsung uses so you will get pretty good performance. I have been running into a little issue with my device freakin out. Hopefully I can get cyanogenmod on here. I also found an extended batter for this thing too so looking into doing that so it will last a lot longer

Battery: I agree, it drains a lot faster than my Infuse 4G did, but that much was expected due to the dual-core CPU etc.
Delayed response on wake: I don't have this issue, and I'm using WidgetLocker.
outdated OS: A lot of people complain about that, but no one ever explains WHY they want gingerbread. I had it on the Infuse - yes, it was not, but there's nothing that I could do in Gingerbread that I can't do now, except say that I have Gingerbread. I have a problem with people who "demand" the latest OS but have no idea why they want or need it.
Gets hot: also not having the issue, but I'm using the stock cable that came with the phone.
I have some complaints but they are minor (like how I'm always accidentally hitting the 3D button), and I'm glad that I returned my Infuse for the Thrill. Once cyanogen is released I will be golden.

after playing with pretty much all of the above, I have to agree..this phone rocks.
the 3d is much better than a gimmick assuming you pay attention to how to use it. I have compared it to the Evo3d and the NDS3d and of course our 3d TV...
It's great...if you don't see it..you're doing it wrong..plain and simple.
It's an added bonus to all of the other great things about this phone. I have run, and will continue to run more tests on the Thrill side by side with the infuse and the US SGS2 ...so far the Thrill stomps the Samsung phones ...every single time.
It is a more comfortable fit for me than the infuse, but I think that is because my previous phone was an Evo...the weight and dimensions are very similar.
Build quality is great..I don't feel like it is going to break if I hold it wrong
I don't get the lag that some have experienced but I also did some minor tweaks to speed things up a bit.
Sumper Amoled blah blah blah... I love the Sammy screens, I compared their screens to others and until now, I favored the sammy screen... This Thrill has a much better screen than what I expected (especially after all of the negative reviews it received on the screen)
The LG widgets are awesome..they make sense, they are perfectly sized, and they work within launcher pro..yay!
anyway..I still have some testing to do ..I have not played many games on the Thrill, and have a few select games that were only playable on the Infuse so I want to try those out.
The only thing the atrix had that interested me was dev support...I disliked just about everything else about it
We will get that support..or we will create it buwahahahaha
I agree about the 3D - it's not the main reason why I was interested in the phone, but it's an added bonus, and one that I enjoy very much. I thought it was just a gimmick at first too, but then I took a test picture in the AT&T store of my two-year-old, and I was sold from that moment. I look at it like this: 3D is becoming more and more prevalent, whether you think it's a gimmick or not. The movie and electronics industries are throwing their money behind it. Do I want to miss out on being able to display 3D pictures of my two-year-old 10 years from now when ALL TVs are 3D capable because I thought it was a fad?
Granted there are probably better phones with better 3D capabilities coming down the pipe, but by then she will be 3 or even 4 years old. I can upgrade again if the need arises. But I certainly don't want to look back and say "I wish I had a 3D picture of that to share." Now I will.
Agreed i had the atrix with laptop dock and i was discusted with with it plus in.all the test ive.ran thrill beats em up! with the extra money i bought a gtab wifi so im a happy camper anywho plus i guess i dont really need pc specs in my picked aka gs2 i dont feel like saying . Dude this has 1.2ghz dual core blah blah i rather just say look at my phone it has 3 d lol
Anywho im happy with my buys recently!

Here's my .02. This year I have had the captivate, inspire 4g, iphone 4 and now the thrill. I have to say the thrill is BY FAR my favorite out of the devices. I experience no lag whatsoever, GPS works perfect, reception is MUCH MUCH better than the inspire, screen is more vibrant than the inspire, web browser blows the captivate out of the water (freezing issue with flash content on every samsung phone I've tested), camera is on point, and I even like the interface/widgets LG has included. My only complaints are battery life which is a problem on any android phone and the earpiece sounds a little weird but nothing major. Bottom line, this phone rocks!
Anyone throw CM7 on this baby yet? How's it running?
Agree with most of what has been said. Have had the phone for 3 days now. (well actually it has been in my possesion for about half that time as my 11 year keeps nabbing it to play NOVA).
Just a quick questions though. Anybody have the freezing problem that the G2x had? My phone just did it right after a 4 minute conversation and I was trying to run OOKla Speedtest. Had to pull battery to get it to reboot.
Last night I had that issue right after a phone call. The screen turned black wouldnt turn on. I will see how it goes for the next few days.
No freezing here after 4 days with the phone.
I do love the OP's first words though, I think I will say that next time I walk into a room with a bunch of iPhone sheep. "Hi to all of you. The LG Thrill 4G kills all the phones." And hold up my phone. Should be fun.

Yeah has this phone since Sunday and I love it. I have had 0 lag issues. Apps install almost instantly the screen is very impressive for being a LCD the size and weight are perfect. Large screen and I like a little weight to my devices makes them feel like they wont break on me.
My phone gets warm with heavy use but never hot I havent had to worry about overheating and I have been using the crap out of this phone. The 3D is good, gives me a headache and my eyes go crossed if look at it too long but, it works well especially if you adjust the field depth correctly for the scene. The 1080p video looks great as do the photos. Froyo is just fine I can wait for gingerbread as long as att/lg actually come through. Either way roms will take care of that.
Anybody else switch from the android keyboard to the lg one? I like the look of the lg keyboard better than stock android or anything else on the market.
Oh and I agree "kills all the phones" needs to be a meme.

My friend did the same stuff to his infuse 4g and when I play it side by side my phone is smooth and fluid!!!!! This phone is a powerhouse!!! Oh and I,use swype keyboard

all I can say is it sure is hungry. Extreme heavy use gets me 8-9 hours of use. Haven't had a chance to see 'Normal' use yet. Banning it from my son might help. going to have look for an extended or backup battery.
I'm using the "android" keyboard. I might try swiftkey again; it lagged the heck out of my captivate but it was free so I tried it.

Hmm, sadly I can agree with most of this. The 3D is 'OK' but not great.
I find myself Overheating, Uninstalling, & Lowering Brightness A LOT!
I personally have a sensual love for the phone
But sadly it's not something I can rely on for a full day basis. I'm currently saving up money just so I can get my hands on the CHEAPO Huawei just put on AT&T.
I might put the LG Thrill ROM on my Huawei cause of the weather app & other personal reasons.
If there's a 10/1 on LG, I am dissappointed. 7 At the most for my daily use! 4 On keeping me changing and uninstalling things.

Finally got another phone. So much happier.

I finally had enough and jumped ship. I got what I originally wanted but was too impatient to wait, the Galaxy Skyrocket. I had to dish out full price (used) but it's worth it. The amount of frustration using the Thrill was far outweighing the cost of just getting a new phone. i've found that the only thing that made the Thrill bearable was by flashing CM7 but then you lose any benefit of having it to begin with (3d).
FTR, I had flashed GB O3D rom on this phone and used that for the past 3 months or so prior to finally flashing CM7 and losing the 3d.
The 3d isn't worth the disadvantages of having this phone after all and I wish I had listened to others from the beginning. Even with CM7, the phone is nowhere near as snappy and productive as the STOCK bloated rom on the Samsung Galaxy S2 phones. Prior to having the Skyrocket, I didn't quite understand what the advantage would be, if you compared specs to specs. Apparently there is something else other than hardware specs that makes one android phone simply better than the other hands down. Sorry for the rant, but I am posting this in case others who have been putting up with their Thrill have been on the fence and don't know what they're missing. I bought the Thrill 1 week prior to its release date and have been a trooper putting up with it until this week. I'm so glad to be done with it, it's now sitting in my junk drawer. Good riddance!
Not trying to be rude, but it'd be nice if useless clutter such as this was not posted.
It's completely irrelevant.
i dont know why ppl hate this phone so much i love it after rooting it and putting a custom rom on it rocks the house have no problems with missed calls or sms's np gettting a full day out of the battery now that were off froyo my buddy at work has an sg2 and my phone is just as fast as his phone.
I do not know why people are complaining about this phone either... I have put the thriller rom on it and the battery is lasting for almost 2 full days now... I still have my 3D (which if you ask me is much nicer in theory than it is in actuality.) and rarely use it... You people that are complaining about it as you are, are just too damn picky... Lighten up and enjoy the phone for what it can do. Dont just jump on the "oh i cant upgrade to GB so its shyt" bandwagon...
We're complaining because some of us (myself) ditched the iPhone for a more "open" platform that we wouldn't have to worry about hacking as much so we could do stuff that a phone should do without jailbreaking. I was always doing stuff to my iPhone to the point where it was very unstable an I just wanted to go legit. So I got an Android, now the only way to get anything out of it is to mod and hack again, which bumps you right back into that "sketchy" territory. I'm glad roms and hacks work for you but there are cons to those pro's as well. I've spent far to much time flashing KDZ's on this phone trying to get it functional. Not a single GB worked for me and I tried them all. I always had ghost calls. I've been considering the SGSII so I'm glad to hear it's as good as I think/hope it is.
Update: to further reply to your "I don't know why your complaining" comment about "being too damn picky" All I want is for my phone to last 1 day and not miss any phone calls. Oh, and not freeze in the middle of a game or app. On froyo my battery life is ****e and there is tons of freezing. On GB I miss calls and texts on a regular basis. Now tell me I'm being picky.
I don't think it's the case of being too picky, it's the quality of the phone and the company that gets people. Think about it LG knew the battery life of these phone would be shytty while testing it but they still released it.... plus to my understanding their updating progress is way to long of a wait for such a powerful phone, by the time we "may" get an ICS update jellybean will be out (I think) As for my experience with thrill my only issue was the battery life (which I took care of) other than that I love my phone and very satisfied with it

I used one of my upgrades to get a galaxy note. Stock for stock the thrill was almost as fAst as it and scored much better on fps in graphics tests. I've oc'd the note now and the thrill doesn't come close. I could see the thrill being just as quick oc'd and tweaked. And, the thrill plays more games without having to do any tweaking. Don't get me wrong, i gave the thrill to my son and will probably never go back to the thrill only because of the screen size and lte. Though i did give the son strict orders to take care of it as i want it back when he finally upgrades.

I just finished putting thiaz03d 2.6 with 1158 oc kernel .4 and stripping it down to the apps that I use and man this phone is blazing fast did a antutu benchmark and scored 6538 witch is higher then a stock sg2 so I'm very happy with this phone now it just flys.
Posts like this crack me up, hence my screen name haha. I love this phone. It's got an awesome screen, super fast dual core processor and a high quality feel to the build. All the samsung phones just feel like they're made out of toy plastic. I'm also glad LG doesn't try to overwhelm us with an over-the-top Android overlay such as Sense, TouchWiz, MotoBlur, etc. I replaced the stock launcher with launcher pro as soon as I got it and it got much better battery life. LG Home is a battery sucker and a resource hog. I like the widgets they provided with it too, they're really classy and useful. For a phone with only 512 MB of RAM, I usually manage to get around 200 MB of RAM free when I'm not running anything. Try asking someone with a Captivate how much of their memory they can get free (usually about 100 MB or less), they'll be shocked when you say you can get that. I think the people who complain are too unfamiliar with the Android operating system and its customizability and were just looking for something that works without any tweaking. If you want something like that, just get an iphone. And I'm not knocking that at all, Apple only builds one phone for a reason, so they can concentrate on it and make it work flawlessly despite any perceived hardware shortcomings. But I'm glad I chose my Thrill so I can make it do what I want it to do, and it does. And nothing beat the price point this thing was at back in September.

Hardware is nothing without good support. And LG support frankly isn't very good.

i havent had any problems with lg support there always straight up with me told me when were getting ics when i asked and also to the guy above you i get 200 to 250mb free when i close all my apps so i cant complain at all
i know some ppl have this ghost call thing but you ever think its your carrier and not lg ive used all the roms that claim to have gc probs and i never had any.
I eligible to upgrade and a white galaxy note is what I might get depending on how long at&fee decides to update to ics. Along with that a lag fix and price drop.
I never get more than 100 ram free unless I just stopped playing a heavy game and that's only for a few seconds before everything launches again. What in the world are you doing to get 200 free?
Are you using the stock launcher or a (better) one from the market? I use launcher pro, and it uses much less resources from what I can tell. Whenever I tried going back to LG Home, I noticed there was so much less free memory in the app manager. Actually right now I only have about 76 MB free, but that's because I let Gmail, Go SMS Pro, Opera Mobile, Pandora, and the finance app stay in there because I use them all the time. If I clear them out I'll be over 160 MB and in the green easy.
well i have thiaz03d rom 2.6 and it has lgs newest launcher then i used that post in the 03d forum to remove all the apps that im not using and froze every thing that i didnt want to delete that i dont us i pertty much striped my phone right down and install only the files for my phone and apps i use to run. o and hardly any thing runs in the back ground.

The phone is what you make of it. All smartphones are. if you dont like battery life, find the culprit and eliminate it. If you dont like stock, root it. If you dont like something you have acquired because you didnt do your homework dont whine about it in a place where people are trying to make the best of what they have chosen. Keep your mouth shut and move on. Dont like the phone, go write a review on cnet.

Don't defend LG till they fix the phone
Firstly everyone who doesn’t get ghost calls, are you shore? have you checked, I am only saying this since it is hard to tell, I didn’t think I wasn’t getting any until lots of people started saying that I never answer my phone, and when I started testing it guess what to my surprise I was getting them, and it’s so random that it might happen only 1 out of 20 or even 1 out of 50 but since it is random when it happens you never know, I once was testing it I called 6 times in a row and it was 6 out of 6 ghost calls, and the thing with ghost calls they don’t go to the answering machine they don’t leave missed call notifications and it’s the same with text msg's there is no trace of them at all, and for the people that are calling you they just think you are being rude by not answering or never returning their calls not to mention missing important business calls, so I know when some people say I never get them well for all you know you have and never realised it, and how can anyone defend LG's O3D/Thrill when they have such a serious issue and still haven’t fixed it, not to mention people who get the error "reorganizing internal processes" when trying to call out which I have had in the past, what if you are in an emergency and you need to call but all you get in "reorganizing internal processes" and then you have to wait for the phone to fix itself or restart it, and we all know how long the O3D/Thrill takes to start up don’t we, or you go to make a call and have no reception and have to restart the phone, or have you forgetting the main purpose of a mobile = calling and communication....

It's not that we don't like the post.
It's that it is completely useless and serves as clutter.
This isn't a general section for ALL android phones.
It's the general section for the LG Thrill. Nothing more. Nothing less.

[Q] Time to upgrade........

OK, its time to upgrade my trusty DHD.....
...but what gets my hard-earned (no, really) pennies?
To me there are 4 options........
1) HTC One X
2) Samsung Galaxy Note
3) Wait until the 30th and get the Samsung Galaxy SIII
4) Keep the DHD for another 12 months and benefit from a cheaper contract.
So, if it was your pennies getting spent, where would they be going?
I'm looking for views from existing SGN users here. Do you love the Note? Hate it? What do you like most about it, and what drives you potty?
Thanks in advance for your comments.
Rob
I love my note. It's definitely my favorite phone out of the 8 smartphones I've owned (iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS, 4, HTC Sensation, Samsung Vibrant, LG G2X). The downside? It is the most disappointing phone development wise. There doesn't seem to be any good ROM out there. Stock is painfully slow. There is no CM7 which is really disappointing. Any of the ICS I've seen out has had major problems which is why I haven't upgraded yet. There are horror stories about people bring their phones when upgrading to ICS and so far it doesn't seem to be a small number of people which is really sad. Samsung is JUST rolling out ICS now but I've heard stock ICS is also very slow and if you have CWM on or from what I understand have rooted your phone at all, you run a huge risk of bricking if you try put ICS on.
TL DR; If you don't mind staying stock for a WHILE, get the Note because it's awesome having a huge screen, resolution, and the SPen.

Exactly my thoughts! Thanks for saving me the trouble of typing. I am lazy as hell.
I flashed tons of ROMs and back to stock. At least I won't be bricking my phone this way.

To the OP: If I were you, I would get the One X or the S3, depending on the needs. Like I need the sd card and removable battery so it would rather be the S3 for me. Assuming you haven't used the note for long, both these phones must feel great to you. For almost all of us here, they are just too darn small. Once you use a note, you just get addicted to it.

Thanks guys. Keep them coming.
I played with the Note and the HOX today and liked them both, but the huge Note battery is drawing me towards it.
I'm 6'1" and have hands like pan-shovels so the size of the Note isnt a -ve to me.
love mine too!
Yeah loving the bigger screen. I'd never go back to something smaller.
On a different note.. (haha) had mine a month and have rooted and switched the rom and Kernel.. wasn't very hard just had to get over the mind set of bricking it.
Buy one!
Note, large screen, s-pen apps (if you're inclined to use them), some good roms, ICS development with the new builds should be on their way soon
the rest? S3, rather than 1x. or at least wait till reviews come out comparing the 2.
wait
wait for Galaxy S3 - I allready have it and It's awsome!!!

The Note is fabulous - better than the GNex I came from. Why? The screen principally - the Galaxy nexus screen just seemed so small compared!
I think the answer is this:
1. If you want the latest tech - go for the One X or the S3.
2. However, as it's so early in their life cycle you don't know what problems they will have (other than we already know the OneX has cr*p battery life) and we all know that no phone is perfect. Each phone I've had (and I've had a few) has had it's own unique issue.
3. If screen size is important, forget the other two and go for the Note. There is just simply no question of that (until Note II is announced in future!)
Maybe quad core will be a bit faster than dual core but I doubt it will make much of a difference in everyday use. In any event, I hate TW / Sense etc so always remove that bloatware and, hey presto, android flies on the Note (not that it was sluggish with TW).
And the lack of reliable ICS at the moment? In the words of Catherine Tate (look her up if you're not British!) - am I bovvered? There's such a clamour for it and, yes, it's a bit prettier and more logical in places but GB is absolutely fine for 99.98%.
Just my £0.02. Good luck with the decision.
Edit: Just seen that you're a brit - no need to look up Catherine Tate! More importantly, just realised you've got a DHD. Move on, you won't be disappointed. Sure, tech will move on over the next few monts, years etc but it always does.

Thanks for that. I agree with your assessment, especially ICS which is definitely leaving me underwhelmed in terms of how "un-different" (new word!) it is to GB, especially after having used Honeycomb on my tablet for the past 6 months.
I've decided (with a feeling of I'm cheating on a loved one) to get a Note online, then I can return it under distance selling laws if I find it unbearable to live with. I suspect it wont be going back.
Genuinely, many thanks to all who have contributed to this thread. Your insight has been much appreciated.

I love the large screen and battery of the Note.
The S3 is more future proof, but only because of the processors. RAM is the same.
One thing in the s3's favor is the LED notification light! w00t! I have been missing this on EVERY device that wasn't a blackberry!
The s3 also has a large battery, but .. the Note takes the cake.
The One X is out of the picture. Why? Removable battery. Also, they pushed the device so fast to get it out on the market as one of the first quadcore devices that ... well, to me it doesn't seem that attractive. The s3 on the other hand looks mighty fine!
The Note is awesome for its screen and battery size (as well as the S-Pen).
It's really your call... Sometimes I wish my note were a tiny bit smaller, but I don't regret it when I'm actually using it! hehe.
I upgraded from DHD to galaxy note and can say it was the upgrade. Absolutely amazing display over DHD, much better battery life, faster, smoother, much better camera, etc. When I look back now to already my wife's DHD, it seems to be a nice small phone ... Was able to replace most of work on my laptop with note thanks to Swype ...
I have both on stock ROM, didn't find need to go for ICS on my note. Everything is working flawlessly, maybe will change my mind half year later when there will be more positive reaction from community ... my few cents .

One thing that's driving me mad is the sluggishness of the stock Gingerbread ROM. Is the official ICS ROM still sluggish?
If so, would rooting the phone and deleting some of the bloat help? Also, is it possible to remove Touchwiz from the official ROM? I'm a bit scared to try any other ROMs in case I brick my phone.
I've had my note since november and I love it!! The huge screen is so much fun and great to surf the web!!! It doesn't feel bigger in my pocket than my previous phone (iPhone). Even though it has a huge screen the battery life is really good (especially with my actual rom Criskelo)
I haven't tried the other phones you posted but I am still trying to understand why anyone would need a quadcore in his phone today!! I installed spy cpu on my SGN and my CPU almost never rises to 1400MHz so what could anyone do with the extra power maybe 3D games since I don't play any so can't tell about the performances but I doubt it since the note still has one of the best processors out there! The games I play are: solitaire, temple run, fruit ninja,...

I don't really notice the sluggishness, everything seems smooth!! The rom I am using is lighter than the stock rom so there may be a difference! If you wan't to remove Touchwiz you'd better install a new rom on your phone would be easier than to modify the stock rom! In either case you need to root your phone! At first didn't want to do it but in the end I am happy and giving some good feedback about the rom I am using! And the bricking is pretty rare!!
To install a new rom if you literally follow instructions you can't run into problems!! A bit of research and in the end it just takes 10/15min to change rom!

That's an easy one. Root and install one of the stock rooted GB Roms. No need to 'remove' TW. Just install another launcher (let's not start the 'which launcher is best' argument here) and then set that as default. TW will fade into the background and won't be used and your Note will be faster.

Upgrading to 4.3 or 4.2?

Is there any chance that the HTC First will have a 4.3 or a 4.2 upgrade any time soon? Or is it just not a possibility yet?

BOTH HTC and ATT have denied any future updating or support for this device...aka "discontinued" as they say...although its not a bad device and with the resources that HTC has they could easily pull of an update since the one mini is pretty much a clone.
To get cyanogenmod support we need to be a bigger community and although the device is pretty good, i guess we wont get official CM.
Ports? Um people have tried and so far zero results...we know its possible just no dev has bought himself a first, they go with the One, or the Nexus 5...u know the more popular stuff (which should be an apple thing. Android fans should go for the promising devices and not whats popular or whats good).
so...we are dead.

Ah well darn. I found some stuff online that let me upgrade some select apps to look and feel like 4.3, but it just wasn't the same. It seems like the Myst has a lot of potential, especially with being able to over clock to 1.7Ghz. I think everyone sees it as the "Facebook phone" which is really unappealing to the majority of the Android market who tend be a little more tech savy and less into sharing every detail of their life on Facebook. I think the first thing most of us did with the phone was remove the Facebook launcher anyways. Thanks for your help!

Yes i have done that to my device...there is a android 4.2 clock somewhere in this HTC First forum that i used to replace the uselss 4.1 clock. You just need to find the original clock apk in /System/App and /Data/data and /Data/app and remove it. Then install that clock instead.
The Myst / First has even more potential. The cpu was originally developed to be clocked BY DEFAULT at 1.7GHz, so it can be overclocked to 2Ghz easy.
Yeah i just removed that launcher, but for some reason on the First most launchers LAG like crazy and the best one i found so far is Nova. And yes the facebook marketing was a fail BUT i think it was more of a test run for the hardware. Because now HTC has the One Mini and the desire 601 (i think its the 601) that have very similar/same hardware.
Personally i am loving this phone. Its not too big like a 4.7 inch, but its not too small like a 4 inch. Its perfectly proportionate, its not wide like the old bulky htc phones which had the 2:1 aspect ratio. So it really is a great phone. The glass is shatter resistant. Metal will scratch it deeply and if dropped, the body dents (its actually aluminum with a soft touch finish!) so you can just bend the body back to how it was and it wont seem dented. The body does scratch easy though and ive cracked the screen in the top corner but thank god no shatter, it just a crack that i cant feel anyways...also the glass chips easy, like pieces come off lol
Overall i think its worth my 140 bucks when i got it new off contract

I agree! Its an excellent phone and works very well. The default Google launcher works very well for me, but I think I'm going to try Nova now and see if it works any better. Have you overclocked yours to 2ghz? Did you have to flash a new kernel? Have you had any experience with Google Music lagging on lock screened playback?

No i haven't over clocked. i actually under clocked. I run my phone at 1GHz performance governor with deadline as my I/O scheduler.
No google music works fine for me. i have over 160 songs downloaded to the device that i bought.
You can flash a new kernel and idk what the max is on that, but you would need to do a factory reset.
