Reliable Black-List Call App? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
Anyone currently use a Blacklisting app that blocks incoming numbers that you can program in there that has had success? I see a few of them out there on the market but I am not sure which one is the best. Anyone have experience with these sorts of apps that could suggest one? (T-mobile n1 on 2.2)

I've seen that cyanogenmod includes one if you look under call settings.
Haven't gotten the chance to try it, as I don't get many calls these days.

iPhone had the iBlacklist that was real nice.
Wish there was something cheap/free similar to that.

Of course you can already do that to contacts you have in the stock ROM, I suppose you want to do it to non-contacts..
I've blocked my dumbass car loan folks, as they call to remind me a payment is due starting 5 days before and then call 2-3 times a day if I'm late. Unfortunately I still get voicemails.

I use extreme call blocker for that purpose. It has a lot of other features, but I don't use them, so I can't say how well they work. but they are only useful if you are trying to hide calls and texts

Ever have any issues with this in calls getting through or ringing once then blocking(as some apps do).

Again, the build-in functionality to block calls is built-in and "just works", never even know the call was placed.. Unless a voicemail is left, of course.

I use CallFilter from the market. It's free and will also block unknown/private numbers as well as those not in your contacts. I've been using it for months and love it.

Sometimes I get a fraction of a ring, and the screen usually pops up, but I like that it end the call with out sending them to voice mail

The numbers that I added to my blacklist prevent my phone from ringing. They go straight to voicemail. I don't even know I have a missed call until I look at my call log or they leave me a message. I love this app for the simple fact that I can block people who I hate and stupid people who like to play on my phone. There is also a pro version in the market as well.

I use android firewall by lucky-dog xing...works perfectly. I'd never know they called if I didn't check the log, and it hangs up on then so you don't get voice mails.

SPC free from the market

[BETA] Root Call Blocker -we need CDMA testers!

Hello guys, im the developer of Root Call Blocker, an advanced call and SMS blocking app for rooted phones.
The app is currently in open beta here at XDA:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1051274
I dont have a thunderbolt and need testers! Please let me know if you are interested in some hard-core testing and logging...
I know for the stock images, they added a call blocking feature to the software.
Its nowhere near as powerful as our app...
I think I might give this a try later on.
Please do, and dont forget to let me know of any issues and suggestions!
Also, we update the app on almost a daily basis, so be sure to check the market for updates often.
I've been using this for about a month now and even after using about 4 call blocking apps, this one has been the best out of all of them.
Whether you're dodging telemarketers, collectors, crazy ex-gfs, or your in-laws, this app is great!
Thanks for the high praise! Are there any features you would like to see?
I might check this out. I've tried several call blockers since moving to the Android platform from an AT&T iPhone and none have had the functionality of iBlacklist. I've been using aFirewall the most and it works fairly well with my two gripes being the phone doesn't ring when I get a call but the screen comes on and I don't have an option to have the blocked caller hear a busy signal or not in service message....they all go to voicemail which is a pain. The second problem may be a Verizon thing though. If I give this a shot I'll be sure to give you some feedback.
Oh, one question. aFirewall backs up your blacklist as a txt file on the sd card, any way to import those into your app easily or am I just stuck manually adding them?
For now you will have to add manually. The RC next week will use a backup system as well.
With a little experimenting it seems if I have it set on 'reject' the blocked caller hears endless rings, and if set on 'alternative reject' the caller hears almost 2 rings and then there is a cutoff and dead air. This is on a Thunderbolt running BAMF 1.6.3 on Verizon. It may not be possible but I would love to have an option for the caller to hear the fast busy signal like iBlacklist. In all the tests the phone did not ring and the screen did not come on, so awesome job on that! I'll keep testing for a few days but wanted to give you some initial feedback. Thanks for the hard work.
I've been using Mr. Number for a while now to block calls.
How does this app differ (if it does)...
if its somehow better, I'm more than willing to give it a go.
What happens to blocked calls? Do they go to VM? Pickup/hangup?
I'm liking this so far, seems like the best option out there.

I have been using for about 2 weeks and lots of updates which is good. Initially the calls went to voicemail but since then I haven't had any new ones. Great app for stopping those damn telemarketers.

I'm all over this. I have over 200 collection agencies calling me. I also was running extreme call blocked but it ended up blocking calls not in the block directory. I'll report back in two weeks. Thanks
Here's what must be added for it to be user friendly.
1) easily add an option to block by area code. Example : block all numbers beginning with 800,86, 877,888 or 18888,18777, 1800.
2) must have an option to backup the numbers you've blocked to sd card.
3) blocking calls means we don't hear phone ring at all if possible.
4) easily add blocked calls from the call directory. We should be 2 clicks away not 5 to accomplish this task.
1: add 1800*******, 1888*******, etc.
3: I don't hear my phone ring at all.
4: For how often numbers are added, I don't think this is a big deal. Took can add multiple numbers once you are in the profile you are adding them to.

A button to "Add Last Call To Block List" on the tool bar would be great.

We already provide wildcards. Backup to sd is coming in the next build. To intercept numbers from the dialer, we would have to build our own - thats not what this app is for. You should not be hearing any ring at all either...

[Q] Voice to text?

Hi all.
I just lost my iPhone 4S (bummer). and I need to replace it with something. I am considering the Note but had a question...
The speach to text feature was my favorite on my iPhone, I would do MMS, email or any other typing by simply speaking into the microphone. The phone would turn my voice into text and I could send it on it's way.
Does the Note have a good Speach to Text feature?
Try vlingo

I don't actually have the device yet, but I will keep that in mind when/if I do. Does that app compare to Siri favorably? Do you use it and do you like it? I just want to be able to create texts and email from voice. Not the commands but rather the actual text.
I am using TouchPal keyboard on my note I have found that it's got better voice recognition than Google itself
I have posted this using the voice recognition ...
........
but if you are looking for an app like Siri. ... I don't think you will find any. .....well there is iris but it's not good for sending sms or messages ...its just a chat bot.....
you can try vlingo like ketan said but Siri is way better and you will be disappointed
Thanks both of you.
I am not nuts over Siri.. most of it is fairly useless and stupid.. I just want to be able to dictate text into an mms or email, and it sounds like either of these two apps do it fine.
Though it was funny telling Siri to "Remind me to kill myself tomorrow at 9am"...
the following day I got an alert saying "Kill yourself in 15 minutes"... we laughed a bit at that... not really useful but kinda fun.
oh yeah...forgot to ask.
Does the note connect to the newer samsung smart TVs the way the tab 10 and 7 do?

[REQUEST] Replace HTC Stock Phone Dialer

I desperately want to be able to replace my entire dialer for my HTC One. I am running ViperROM with the standard HTC Sense Phone Dialer. While i know there are many dialers in the google play I can use to Dial with, none of them are actually replacing the stock App because incoming calls and any dialed calls still open up the HTC Dialer. I realize this is not an easy task, because there are many different things that need to be replaced for this to happen. I will donate money for this app, something reasonable. I've always contributed to development that is deserved and will continue to do so. I assume this would be possible just with some work if devs could get the HTC Camera to work on the GE edition, maybe its the same idea of reverse engineering (I'm open to correction) In the following post, devs have managed to get the HTC Camera working on the GE version. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2351965
**The reason I am wanting this is because I am used of my iPhone in which when I dialed a number, no matter if i used an area code or not It pointed to the persons contact (Aka global contact lookup). With the HTC Dialer, if I don't dial the number EXACTLY like it is stored then just shows up as a number in my outgoing and never shows the contact photo or the contact at all. Same thing for incoming calls if i do not have them stored with an Area Code. I have been told this may be something to with a patent dispute from apple and HTC, and HTC just never wanted to add it back. I know pretty much every other Manufacture that skins android this works fine with. Just not HTC.

It's easy for you to say that when you're used to it, but many of my close friends I know there numbers by memory and i find it extremely faster to just dial the numbers, and not just that when i store number i would not like to have it exactly like to comes in. This is the only phone i've owned in years that does this. It may seem like nothing to some people but me and a buddy both have this phone and both are used to dialing numbers from memory, which IMO is much faster.

As a matter of fact the HTC dialer searches by Name and Number at the same time so you should be covered with this dialer. still there are a whole bunch of dialers available at the Play Store. TouchPal is pretty good.

Sorry, but you obviously don't understand what i am saying. This is a known issue. And its not hard to reproduce. Find a phone number that is stored in your phone with an area code. Now dial that number without an area code. The contact will not show up when dialing out. Same thing if someone calls you and you do not have a number stored with area code. Vice versa. This is a known issue and has been talked about on different forums randomly. It is not hard to reproduce.

And you obviously skimmed over my entire post, i wrote you that i tried dialers in the playstore, in which all of them still use the system dialer when receiving or calling out, in turn DOES NOT do a global contact lookup unless the number is dialed exactly like it is stored.

While I do appreciate your help, you're mistaken or don't quite understand fully. You do suffer this, EVERY HTC One ROM has this issue, i've talked to countless HTC Tech support its the same thing for everything. There are many forums about it. So you understand....
Store a contact with this the following:
337-555-5555
Name: Testing
...Now to test this open your normal HTC Dialer
and Dial 555-5555
---That contact will not show up
Hear thee hear thee. You can replace with AOSP dialer all you want. And it will look nice and all handy dandy and stuff. The second you hit call, you are back in the HTC dialer. And when you answer it will be HTC dialer.
You can delete the HTC dialer and it will not change.
You can delete the HTC phone app and replace with AOSP and then you are really screwed. Force closes galore.
The moral of the story is, if you want a full AOSP dialer on Sense, you're gonna have a bad day.

I did use the app, i've used many dialers, they will never actually replace the stock dialer after making a call that is built into the system, you can see this after you dial a number, it reverts back to HTC Dialer, Read the post tyler wrote above. I guess i am not explaining my self correctly.
Do the following:
Save a contact as followed:
Name: Testing
Number: 555-555-5555
Now do the following:
Open up any dialer of your preference. Dial 555-5555 Exactly like that. When you type that in you WILL SEE that correct contact.
Now as soon as you click the call button it will revert back to HTC Stock dialer, in which the contact does not match up without the exact number that it is stored as. You will only see "Dialing 555-5555" with no contact photo instead of "Dialing Testing" with a contact photo. Also, when you look at your call log you will see that correct contact, because you are using a thirdparty app, but when its ringing you will see HTC Dialer and if you do have the number saved EXACTLY like its stored then you will see the contact infromation. But if you have it stored as 555-555 and they call in with an area code which every phone number has...the contact will not show.
The only thing im asking here is if someone could replace the entire system dialer. While I appreciate people trying to offer ideas there is NOTHING that will fix this unless someone figures out how to effectively replace the system dialer completely, which as tyler wrote is very difficult. Using third party apps will not fix this issue.
This is also called global contact lookup, in which most apps can do this, which work fine before actually pressing Dial, then the system dialer takes over and if your number is not exact it will not show the contact.

Call / SMS announcement app?

Well worth the money, can announce pretty much any notification from any app and you can even get it to prompt for a voice reply (speech to text) to read the whole message etc. or even reply to it. Unparalleled support from Ed and constantly updated unlike lots of other apps. Used it for years and one of the best apps I have on my phone.

Is it rooted? If so, you could most likely remove the dialer and messaging apps completely. If not, you could use a launcher that allows you to hide those apps. Come to think of it, if the phone isn't active, then calls and texting won't work anyway (although I guess they could call 911 which might be a good thing).
I personally use a kid safe launcher on my kids' tablet that only gives them access to the apps I've preapproved.
As for now ones rooted the other isn't, but the dialer and text being removed would be more for my youngest than my oldest...the youngest is starting to get crafty lol

Haha! I hear that. My kids try to watch over my shoulder to try to see the pin to get out of their kid's launcher I use. Speaking of which, this works great at keeping kids out of apps they shouldn't be in.
