AndroidCentral release Windows Program allowing of sideloadig apps. - myTouch 3G, Magic Apps and Games

Posted this in the Arai section since I know that AT&T removed the ability to install non market apps but Since I'm always in this section, I figured I'd put it up herel. It could be of use to some people here in the Magic section aswell.

Like the title says. Jerry Hildenbrand over at AC has made an open source program for windows which allows for the sideloading of apps.
Thought I'd inform the Aria users since AT&T removed this ability from the stock rom.
Incase anyone here hasn't rooted yet, Works with non roted devices aswell.

The APK thread (freewares only)

Hi,
Due to the impossibility to download apps from Android Market for thoses who are running Haykuro G build, I suggest to post here some "must have" apps in order for us to continue to live without the market for some days/weeks
Personally, I'd need AKNotepad, ASTRO, AndFTP, Android VNC, Meebo.
Can someone post the latest version of theses apps here?
I've already tried to find them elsewhere but it was always old versions.
As these apps are free I do not think it breaks the T&Cs of this forum
Thanks in advance
i need meebo, i will post all my APks soon.
That's a great idea but I believe haykuro found a work around. He posted earlier that he was able to download 10 market apps. without troubles. He said the weekly update will be later tonight may be morning (basically said he had to work until 10pm). Don't stop on that account though, we need a better, more up-to-date thread for .apk s

Backup for Root Users

Does anybody know where I can get this? I just got a new Magic because my old one bricked, and I had it on my old one & made a backup on my SD card, but now I can't find it to restore my backup.
I was sure I got it with the fatality hero rom before, but I just installed that on my new Magic & it's not there, and I can't find it in the marketplace either. Does anybody have an .apk of it or mind pointing me in the right direction?
Thanks.
It's in the market, just redownloaded it 2 days ago. Just do a search "backup"

Just looked again, it's not there for me.
I just took another look as well, can't find it any where either. Maybe the Dev is updating or pulled it. You could email him direct. http://blackgins.wordpress.com/

MOD EDIT
Thread moved to Sapphire applications and games forum
Well, you are not only one... i can't download it either...
even http://www.cyrket.com/package/com.bg.smsbk is empty page...
I couldn't find it at the market this morning neither, good thing i have use "Backup for Root Users" to backup the 'apk' which include the app.
I uploaded the version i have here:
Link remove by moderator. If anyone wants it then download it through official channels such as Market or developer.
Removed from the market
The dev might have pulled the app from the market due to bugs, see his blog post http://blackgins.wordpress.com/2009/08/29/news-on-backup-for-root-users/. That post talks about version 3.3, but the last version I've seen in the market (2010-April-02, no updates since) was 4.1.4. I've uploaded it here:
Download Backup for root users 4.1.4 APK
Link remove by moderator. If anyone wants it then download it through official channels such as Market or developer.
NOTE: I've just tested this version on a rooted Nexus One with CyanogenMod 6 RC1, and it couldn't restore the SMSes and MMSes. No wonder the author removed the app from the market. There is still an old version that might work, Backup for root (old).

Quickroot Stock Nexus One FRF85B questions

I have a stock AT&T Nexus One updated to FRF85B. I am from the US, but the Market doesn't show the paid apps. I wanted to quickroot the phone to install Market Enabler so the paid apps are available.
1. The issue is if I use quickroot on the phone, does that mean I can never go back to a stock ROM? I am confused because the quckroot for the stock AT&T Nx1 says its not a ROM re-write, just a patch.
2. Will I no longer receive updates via OTA from Google because of this?
3. Will there be additional bugs because I flashed my ROM using the quickroot method.
4. There are 2 options for Quickroot, what is the difference what is best?
5. Has anyone tried the Market Enabler program and what are your opinions?
Thanks you,
Mark Stachowski
If I were you, I'd check why the paid apps don't show first, before considering rooting. You're doing it for the wrong reasons.
The answers to almost all of your questions are in the 2 "sticky" rooting threads in Development section. Please don't be lazy, read them. And read "android 101" thread.
3. Bugs are property of ROMs that you flash, and aren't connected to rooting in any way.
5. Market Enabler works. What opinions can one have of a program that just does what it says?
Sorry I forgot to mention I am an American guy living in Saudi Arabia, it doesn't work because of that.

need help plz

Hi I'm new to the Samsung captivate at&t. I did the 1 click root program and I have the superuser icon but I can't install 3rd party apparently! Wen I try to install it say my phone has block the non android applications. Could someone help me out?

Rooting does not allow non market apps, you need to enable sideloading. I think there is a program out there called one click decrippler that should do it. Look in the captivate development section for non market apps or sideloading
Woops, yes see post above

Side loading homebrew apps

Maybe someone has already asked or addressed this issue but is there an unlock or something other than a dev account to be able to side load apps? Homebrew, no piarate or illegal apps.
Not yet that I am aware of (I have been following this forum to see if/when). No custom ROMs yet either.
