Developer Droid X: may hold key to our success! - Droid X Android Development

Rainabba and norman over at alldroid claim to have found a developer droid x that for sure has froyo and may also have a different bootloader. Guys even if its complete bull**** i would be willing to donate for a dream. Head over to www.alldroid.org.

Dropped a little something. Hopefully this turns out legit.

Don't get you hopes up too much though.
We had the bootloader from developer phones on Milestone. However it was of no use, since hardware key on dev phone was different (also dev phone just has OMAP HS mode disabled in hardware, that's how it accepts everything).

While my gut says all of this is probably true, I'm going to blissfully remain 100% optimistic!

Workin' it
Alldroid sent out a tweet about 1 hr ago:
"We have the phone and are working on it."
EDIT: tweet from alldroid 5:30pm EST:

Yeah, I posted this in another thread. Pretty unhappy about this, but I don't know if it's enough to drive me to another phone (probably the Fascinate).
Yea I think I might get it and taje it back before 30 days and keep my incredible until fascinate comes out or maybe another non motorola phone haha

Ugh......do I cancel my Droid X Best Buy pre-order and wait for something else, being impatient all the time, or just go with it and forget about root/ROMs...
Decisions, decisions.
Uh you can still get root with a locked down bootloader.
Custom ROMs and recovery images may be a pipe dream, unless a serious vulnerability is discovered.

Right, but root still looks to be a long ways off, (he just estimated 4 months) though obviously nobody knows for sure.

DROID X, DROID 2 Won't Allow Custom ROMs
the bright side to this is, with it having the same type of encryption as the MileStone devs have had 7 months to figure out what does and doesn't work.
better this than some crazy even more complicated encryption.

[RECOVERY] psfServiceMod for Incredible [Updated 12/20 3:14pm]

Today Klutsh released psfServiceMod, which allows you to use an android device to downgrade a ps3. It currently supports most popular android phones.... now including the Droid Inc!
The latest release, 3.2, has everything fixed! I've had it for about a day now and all is good, backups and restores are no longer broken and psfreedom works, grab it here: http://www.klutsh.com/download/86/[...card: [url]http://www.klutsh.com/download/25/
Things to keep in mind:
There is a possibility that you will lose the ability to play Blu ray movies if you downgrade, i personally didn't, and i did it twice. I have a launch model 60GB for homebrew.
If your on 3.41 and want an alternate method of jailbreaking, you might consider Adrynaline's psfreedom kernel.
If you want to use the kernel make sure you have the right one, there is a sense and cm6 version. When your phone turns on, you need to open terminal emulator and enter:
su
insmod /system/lib/modules/psfreedom.ko
This method supports peek and poke and can be run with the phone on, however, it will disable usb mass storage, and wifi. To fix this, just flash back to another kernel like incrediblek's or ziggys. This code will need to be entered again if your phone reboots.
me too, would love to see this!
Yes a inc port will be awesome.

I tried with klutsh (who is a great guy btw) for over 40 recoveries and many custom kernels, he just cannot get it to work on the incredible. Done deal.
Get yourself a dedicated device. I got a used 1st gen ipod nano from craigslist for 10 dollars and it works flawlessly, all payloads and downgrades.

He tried 1 test build of the old psfmod. He rewrote the entire thing for this version. I really dont see the problem considering it has almost the exact hardware as the evo and both run clockwork. Am i missing something?
but, a 3.50 Jailbreak would be nice lol.
Im trying to get a service mod going, but i cant compile psfreedom.ko and if i do i get exec_format_error trying to run it. Im running a modded psfreedom kernel btw. Anyone think they can properly compile it? Or is it unlikely to work?
Is this different than Adrynalyne's psfreedom kernel? I'm just curious really, I never plan on owning a ps3.

still able to root even with locked bootloader?

some apps requires root for it to works.
We don't know if it will be a locked bootloader. Let's hope it isn't and Moto is keeping to their promise to "work with both parties":
http://briefmobile.com/motorola-well-work-with-developers
I would love to know this too when the information is avaliable, i'm tring to get rid of my iphone to leave the big brother. If moto is going to pulling this crap then i'm going to get a htc or something else.
at&t will probably ask to be locked bootloader since at&t is pure evil
I don't understand why it seems to be such a big deal that Motorola has locked bootloader, since even the Nexus S has one?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875580
Is there some sublety I'm missing? Is the "moto lock" harder to bypass than the "Sammy lock"?
What about the ATT and Verizon whole upgrade policy now. What the hell is going on there. i hate these companies

Yes, the "fastboot oem unlock" command only works on select devices mainly the Nexus One and Nexus S (probably a few other ones too like the milestone)
Most other phones have locked down bootloader by the manufacturer and do not unlock in the same way. You can take the Sony Xepria as an example of the worst possible scenario for having a locked phone
If Moto doesn't release the unlocking procedure, it will take time and in some case will not be possible to unlock the device and there won't be any Dev community actively working on the device.
Honestly they should all release the locked & unlocked version. You want peace of mind you get the locked version. You want to risk brick'ing your phone you get the unlocked and the carrier/manufacturer don't not to deal with you.
IMO this is who it should be.
yea..i am excited about this product and posted over in the Gtab forum (since Gtab is the WHOLE of my android experience being a 2+year iphone user)...and immediately was told "nope, not going to get one as it will most likely be locked".
Understood and appreciated but...
Well...look, i don't mind locked if the darn thing ships with working software and has at least 90% of the functionality i want out of the box. For example..as boring as the iphone has gotten, it works so i am ok with it being a walled garden.
In the case of the Gtab, its VERY intensively being rooted and and thats a good thing..because it was A NON FUNCTIONAL pos out of the box so modding it was a MUST.
Likewise if the Atrix works well out of the box ill be fine with it..if it doesnt work so great and is locked down..i either wont be buying one or ill be taking it back within the 3 day period.....
We will see i guess as i am kinda tired of how limited the iphone really is. I want an SD card and the ability to side load working stuff without using itunes. I want an HDMI output that i can watch movies on the hotel flat screen tvs just by plugging in my phone to it. I want to be able to get lap top functionality and/or use it as a mobile hot spot. I want to be able to hack in and get full use of tv.com and hulu. I want my sling box to work. I want to stream blue tooth to my car along with pandora and have blue tooth head phone funcionality, i want lots of cool easy to get and use apps. I want something i can get a keyboard to for content creation or at least give me a slide out keyboard (lets face it, touch screen is not as good for creating content no matter HOW good you are at the onscreen touch style key pads).
The atrix looks to fit the bill where as my Gtab is having to pull %75 of what i WISH my iphone could do for me (netflix being the exception of something my iphone does, that droid wont do). But for watching movies/tv, pluggin in a key board and typing, and surfing on a larger touch screen i could not be happier and am glad i avoided an ipad......I would also like better MS office/exchange support but think the atrix is an over all better solution than going with a win7 phone just for that one piece of the picture...
The hardware is there...the connectivity is there. It is 100% all going to come down to software and execution to determine if this thing is the solution i hope it will be versus a complete waste of time and energy (in which case it's... Samsung Infuse vs an HTC ((and continuing using the gtab )) i guess....)....

Yea, and installing apps from other than the market probably wont be allowed either.
Luckily that was all easy to fix on the Galaxy S, it was so easy to be rooted and load custom ROMS. Heck, there was a root procedure out for it before it was even released officially.
I'm with Allen. As long as it works, little need to mod it anyway.
The only mod that is a must is rooting to simply remove all the ATT junk.
But how can you remove system data( Att junk) if you can not have r/w access to system.

Nah, root and rom allows you to make it your *****. Otherwise your just dryhumping. Let us hope the smart guys make progress on this. I will not buy any phone that does not have developer support here. That one thing gives a phone a lot of extra legs and everything between here and end of life is the better for it. Agreed. I sincerely hope moto doesn't bone us. Although i'm confused. from what I read the Droid X had a huge hullaballo about the efuse, however i've also read that there's no efuse with the tegra2, and the Droid X has custom roms. So what would a locked bootloader be? Are people referring to and "unlockable" locked bootloader?
I just want to see if the Atrix has wifi tether out of the box or if i'll have to *****-mount some other solution (IE; PDAnet). I really hope it either is out of the box or someone gets it running shortly after. PdaNet just did not seem to get on well with my ipad, and my captivate and streak both worked extremely well with the one built into 2.2

Custom roms built on motorola's kernels. That's the big thing turn off with the DX/2/2Global/Milestone/everything besides the OG Droid.
That does make sense. But can a custom rom built on motos kernel enable items like wifi tether?
I doubt ATT will alow wifi tether out the box unless they can control it and charge you for it

That I understand, even expect. However my streak and captivate were able to get it via roms, I was curious if that will be possible with a locked bootloader on the atrix. I'm not overly familiar with the development scene beyond loading roms and flashing kernals (ie I can do it but couldn't make my own). So I don't know if being limited to the moto kernal would restrict you from having wifi tether and was hoping someone more experienced could answer that one.
I think yes..

[RUMOR] I hate rumors but here it goes...

I hate hearing rumors, I really do. But I'm going to start one because mine has some merit to it. I have a friend of mine that works for Verizon. I told him I wouldn't state his name or what "department" he works in when I made this post. I was talking to him on the phone just about 45 minutes ago about the Revolution and how we're dying to get Gingerbread and how some people are actually getting rid of the Revo for fear that it will never get GB. Here's the conversation that took place.
Me: I just really wish we'd get it already. It would help out with development so much.
Him: Dude, whatever you do, don't get rid of your Revo.
Me: Haha, I'm not but why?
Him: You guys should be getting the soak test soon and as long as it goes good all Revos will have it by mid or late October.
Me: Don't bull**** me, how do you know?
Him: Trust me, it just came through an email 2 days ago. I meant to call you but I couldn't remember if you had actually bought the Revo or just waited for something different.
Me: Damn man that's awesome! You better not be bullshitting me.
Him: I'll put it this way, I put my paycheck on it.
Me: That's awesome man, hey can I tell people about our convo?
Him: I don't care, just don't use my name or where I work.
Me: Kinda HAVE to tell people where you work or I'll look like a retard hahaha.
Him: Oh ok but don't tell them what department I work in or anything. I already almost got fired a while back for putting out some info about the Bionic hahaha.
Me: Alright cool, hey thanks man. You have no idea how happy a lot of people are going to be when we get GB.
The rest of the convo was filled with nonsense talk about times past (and girls haha). Just thought I should share this info with you guys!
Loving this. I want GB!!!
I'm speechless

Soak testing is testing a system with a significant load over an extended period of time to discover how things act over a long period.
What he is saying is there are Revo's out there with 2.3.4 already installed on them. Verizon employees will carry and use a Revo on a daily basis with 2.3 loaded to see how it performs, what glitches arise etc...
If you play video games its kind of like an beta test only its not generally open to the public. During this time they also test the push out of the update to the phone to make sure everything will go smooth when they start pushing it to thousands at once.

Might be worth having a stock phone if it got the OTA update with gingerbread in it.
Think i'm going to check out Revolt 1.4 tonight and go back to stock in the morning.
Please, any thoughts on this?

Throwing more cores at a device does not necessarily increase performance, either, unless the application base and operating system takes full advantage of them for multi-threading.
Case in point: Most hard-core games on a PC that came out over the past 5 years will run the same, if not better on a single or dual core machine as they did on a quad core. What really makes the difference is architecture, clockspeed, application architecture, and most importantly (assuming the apps use it) GPU implementation!
Assuming all apps were hardware accelerated on an Android, you would care more about the GPU then you would the CPU. Being that a lot of apps are not hardware accelerated, or take advantage of aggressive multi-threading, you may actually see a performance drop on the Bionic depending on the implementation of the devices core implementation (much like the scores from the Atrix showed).
The hype of more cores = smoother experience is bunk. It's just a spec and numbers war. More cores = possibility of more apps running seamlessly at once, but only if the architecture is there to support it.

Motorola released this sooner than you guys would have thought because the Bionic's replacement will be announced tomorrow.

Awesome that means more people will get bionics because they will be cheaper
I don't know enough about coding to make an educated guess in this. However I am curious if the release of the kernel source code will make it easier to do research into bootloader unlocking, as the kernel seems like a proverbial key for the lock involved. Can someone who is educated add some clarity to this?
Personally, I view this as a step in the right direction on Motorola's part. Along with the recent release of the D3 source code, it tells me that they are at least half committed to keeping the platform open and developable. My theory is that they're releasing these codes in bits and pieces, while Verizon moves to get a secure hold on the tethering "issue", and that once that process is complete, we'll see all the codes roll out. I say this because I recently tried to run Wireless Tether and, instead of the app simply failing to work properly, it actually activated the VZW Hotspot app, and redirected my phone's browser to the Verizon tethering sign up page. On top of that, it also killed my data, until I did a battery pull and reboot. This tells me that VZW can and does now have a process in place to actively block usage of wireless tethering apps. I think they're in the process of trying to find a patch for the Hotspot radio hack as well, and once that's completed, they'll have little or nothing to fear, and will clear Moto to release full source codes. I may be totally wrong, but it does seem to make a bit of senseā€¦

It may mean that some devs who like projects may find fixes for some of the nagging issues with the phone (data loss, the buzz of the headphones, etc) if they are related to programming rather than hardware.
Just as jjhiza stated. A step in the right direction. Even though moto will be releasing the razr soon.

Great news! Hopefully this (and the Roms coming from it) will help us all fall in love with our Bionics all over again
Crossing my fingers for accelerated development now
