[Q] APNDroid problem on Milestone? - Motorola Droid and Milestone Q&A, Help & Troublesh

Hi guys,
i was previously using a WM platform and now jumping to Android, so I'm pretty new here.
So i dont have any data plan for my milestone and i installed APNDroid to disable 3G/Egde/GPRS. I enabled the option to keep my MMS working. But the problem is that i cant even send out a MMS at all unless i enable my 3g/Egde/GPRS.
Is there a way to fix this or is it a bug?
Thanks guys for being patient with me.

Do you use the most current version 2.1.3? This enables you to keep mms service active

Yes, i download the latest apndroid in the market. Still, i cant send out mms when i disable my 3g/egde/gprs. I can only send mms when i enable 3g/egde/gprs.

Check the contents of your MMS access point: Settings->Wireless (something like that) and find your way to the access point list on your phone (sorry I have German locale so I can't tell you a specific path)...check there if there is still "apndroid" appended and delete this sequence from your mms-profile...also make sure that the APN-type is "mms" (without the quotes)...

I checked and notice that if i disable "keep mms" option, my mms apn doesnt have "apndroid" behind it. Its weird tho. Is apndroid working well for you?

Yeah, mine works flawlessly...:/

Need Wizard for Dummies

Hi all, I realise there are a lot of resources around here, but to be very honest, they all assume a level of knowledge I just don't have. I'm pretty computer-savvy, but all this phone/PPC stuff is new territory to me.
The story: I recently bought an unlocked T-Mobile MDA to use on the Fido network in Canada. I'm having a lot of trouble getting things to work beyond simple voice and texting. I've finally managed to get a GPRS connection working so I can surf the internet, but I can't get Messenger to work nor can I send MMS. I'm gathering that changing the MMS settings will require I flash the ROM to a generic version, is that correct? I've found the step-by-step instructions for doing this, but have no clue what file to actually use. My #1 priority is using Messenger, and I can't connect via wi-fi or GPRS. Not sure if that's a separate issue or not . . .
I am usually very self-sufficient WRT tech stuff but I am just getting more confused the more I read. Any pointers or hand-holding would be very much appreciated!!
I'll give you what little help I can. Since I don't have fido I can't tell you the settings that you need for sure but I'll see if I can't find them for you. First, you don't have to flash a new ROM to change youe MMS settings, you just have to put the correct setings in there for it to use it. The thing with messenger is that some phone companys have started to block the ports that messengers use so if that's the case with fido, you may never get it to work. I'll do some looking and see if I can't come up with your MMS settings for you though, I'm sure I've seen them around here.
Here you go:
1. Create a 'Cellular Line (GPRS)' connection under My ISP.
Call it whatever, I called it Fido MMS.
2. The APN is mms.fido.ca
3. user=fido, pswd=fido
4. Leave the Advanced tab alone (Auto IP assignments)
5. exit My ISP connections
6. In MMS Composer app, Tools/Options/Server, grab the default.
7. I renamed the server name as 'Fido MMS'.
8. I set the Gateway=205.151.11.13 (note - no leading zeroes or port 9201!)
9. Server address is http://mms.fido.ca
If you have any more settings questions, go to post #7 in this thread. - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299023&highlight=fido+settings
Hey, I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out.
Part of why I thought I would have to flash the ROM is because in the MMS servers part, I am not able to modify the existing server (T-Mobile) nor can I add a new one since the buttons are all greyed out. I figured T-Mobile had locked this setting in. Am I missing something?
You just have to create new connections. Just go to Start-->Settings--> connections tab--> Connections--> Advanced tab--> Select Networks button--> and finally the New button and use the above settings to create a new connection. After that you should be able to use those settings for your MMS. Also do the exact same thing as above to set up your GPRS settings. When you're done setting those up, to be able to connect to GPRS just choose the GPRS connection you just set up in the Select Networks page. There are 2 connections in there that you can choose which connection you want to use, just use the GPRS settings that you just set up for both of them.
I've managed to set up and connect to the various networks, but I still don't have the option to add or change the MMS server. The buttons remain disabled and only T-Mobile can be used. Still can't log into Messenger, either. The wi-fi is pretty much non-functional. I really regret buying this phone.
Thanks for trying to help me out though, I really do appreciate it.
Just to kind of get this straight, does your GPRS work now? Can you log on to the internet in internet explorer?
I'll have to do some looking, getting your mms to allow you to change to the server that you set up may only take a regestry edit.
As for your wifi, that may have to do with the security settings that you have set up. I believe you can only use wep and in WM5 you may only be able to use 64 bit wep keys but I'm not positive on that. I think you also have to have SSID enabled. I'm kind of new to this part since I just set up my first wireless network about 2 weeks ago.
Don't give up on it yet.
Ok, found the registry settings for MMS. Hopefully your comfortable enough to be able to change the settings yourself. Go to HKLM/Software/Arcsoft/Arcsoft MMS UA/Config/mm1/MMSCSettings/T-Mobile MMS
Now change these registry keys:
Gateway : 205.151.11.13
GatewayPort : 8080
ISP : FIDO MMS
MmscURI : http://mms.fido.ca
Name : FIDO MMS
Now close your registry editor and wait 30 seconds or so and press the power off button until it warns you that "device will be off..." click yes and then reboot your phone.
Your MMS settings should now be set to the correct settings although I'm not going to guarantee it since I couldn't test it myself. The only thing I'm thinking that may cause it not to work is the ConnectionVia registry setting which may cause it to revert back to it's original settings because it points to the t-mobile mms settings and I have no idea what you would need to change that setting to. I'm crossing my fingers though that it doesn't cause it to revert back.
If that doesn't work, deleting the entire T-Mobile settings key may unlock your grayed out keys that aren't allowing you to change your settings in the first place.

Can anyone answer this???

I have an AT&T Tilt unlocked and am using it for T-Mobile. The phone works great with the exception of a few things. What do I need to do in order for my Internet and MMS messages to work?
Also does anyone know of any shortcut for text messaging? It seems that you have to go through so many steps to start a text.
Thanks!
settings are different with other carriers
I am not exactly sure what settings would have to be changed to make the internet work but I know I have read it a few times for different ROMS, I just didn't need the advice since mine works. Search the forums and find out what TMobile runs off of. As far as how quick it takes to get to texts, you can change a key to them and there are a ton of programs that offer shortcuts.
for MMS the setttings need to be:
Server name: T-Mobile MMS
Gateway: 216.155.165.50
Port Number: 8080
server address: http://216.155.174.84/servlets/mms
connect via: T-mobile MMS
Wap version: WAP 2.0
for the internet go to connection settings and for the connection name enter
T-mobile Data
access point name: wap.voicestream.com
user name and password leave blank
thanks for the quick response. Where exactly do I go to enter this information?
thanks again

Thank you for the link
it also depends on which internet plan u have? if its the 5.99 tzones plan, its a little more difficult to set up, let me know if u have that one and i'll tell u how.. if ur using the 19.99 plan, simply go to settings-->connections-->connection setup, and set it up for tmobile USA. it'll also set up ur mms at the same time. good luck
omar
oh wait... ur using the tilt rom... thats probably NOT gonna be there... i'd advise u to flash to a different rom.. sorry
Hi,
to speed up your textmessaging you can copy the files tnsms(for SMS) or tnmms (for MMS) for the windowsdirectory in your startupfolder.
These files open a new SMS or MMS an you wont have to do many steps.
Then you have possibility to choose these applications in your buttonapplication, where you can assign applications to buttons.
yes i have th 5.99 plan can you still help?
sms settings on tilt
Sorry mms settings......
Does anyone know where these are ?
my buddy is on tmobile and it took me a good day to figure out the correct settings... I honestly don't understand why tmobiles mms settings are so hard to setup while atts is really easy
hey, just as a warning, i was never able to get the 5.99 settings to work on the original tilt rom, and another user on this forum also never got it to work. the 19.99 internet works fine on the tilt rom. dunno its weird. however when i flashed over to a different rom, it worked no problems.
1- go to connections, and add new connection cellular line, gprs 3G, call it whatever you want
2- access point name: wap.voicestream.com, leave the next one blank and then finish.
3- now click on manage existing connections, click on proxy settings on the bottom right tab
4. make sure both boxes are checked, and enter 216.155.165.50 as the proxy server.
5- click on advanced, and double click on http: and change the port to 8080. leave everything else the same. ok out to the original connections settings screen.
6- click on the advanced tab on the bottom. click on select networks and set both of them to my work network
thats it.. IE should work now no problems, and set any pop3 email accounts to connect to my work network. good luck
omar
i have no idea how to flash to a new rom. Is this something that you think i can do easily and without ruining my phone?
I am running into the same issue too, no MMS, but Internet works good on the 5.99, so i am really wanting the MMS to work.. I hope i dont have to have the $19.99 to have it to work.. that would suck! HELP!!!

does using tzone proxy affect mms?

ok im using tzones proxy. works fine. im also using open touch 5ul. my sms works fine. but cant receive or send mms. i notice mms messages go through the net or wateva. being i changed my settings to work with proxy is this affecting my mms? any help would be appreciated. im using my phone now to type this
yes it will affect your mms but there is a quick fix. all you need to do is create a new mms.. then press menu and go to options... from their it is going to go to all your accts and select mms then go to settings. you will hten have to change the internet settings to default and use t-mobile data... that is if and only if you are using T-moble.. for all other network providers im not positive how it works... if you have any problems let me know..
r u saying create a new mms text? am i suppose to send it? my sms and mms are in the same folder. for some reason i cant access my mms options. i tried several weeks ago when i tried to do the mms hack but could never access mms options and still cant under the regular inbox screen. thanks for the help. also do i still need my text plan or online mms uses the data part? thanks
ok i removed mms in the registry and reinstall it. i dont mms options no more but my mms and sms is separate. i now can access mms configuration where i see servers? is there where i should be puttin something to get mms workin with my tzone? thank u
i end up finding wat i was lookin 4.

I'm sure there isn't. But I'm pretty sure you don't need a data plan. My old RAZR did it just fine without a data plan. I know from experience that you can't send or receive mms over wifi
MMS is solely and OTA event. You also do not need a data plan to view an MMS. You do, however, need the proper settings in your phone before it will DL a MMS OTA.
As for sending one over WiFi, yes, it is called email and IMing.

you used to be able to, but T-Mobile took care of that, and the APN is now blocked so you can't send or receive the mms messages. Kinda sucks.
settings for MMS over wifi?
pcforpres mentions settings in order to be able to read MMS over wifi, what are the settings? I'm also interested in reading MMS messages over wifi. It would be awesome if I could read/write MMS messages as well, since I do have the unlimited sms/mms with the G1. Obviuosly, I don't have the data plan yet. Thanks!
i think it would be pretty useful.... cause i dont get 3G service in my room or good service at all , and sometimes its impossible to even send an sms

I did not say you could send MMS over WiFi, I said you could only send MMS OTA, which means Over The Air, aka through your carrier's network.
The reason people can't send MMS with cooked ROMs most of the time is because they do not enter their carriers settings into the phone, just like you need to enter the data settings. Sometimes, the date account settings and MMS settings are one in the same, but most of the time they are not.
As well, MMS are independent from having a data account. Every single carrier allows any customer to send and recieve MMS for a nominal fee whether they have a data plan or not. Some bundle MMS in with text while others with data, but MMS is independent of both of those services in terms of network protocol and phone settings(with a few exceptions where if you have a data plan, it is the same setting that your phone uses to do MMS and internet)
WiFi and MMS
Thanks PCJforPres. Per your previous post "MMS is solely and OTA event. You also do not need a data plan to view an MMS. You do, however, need the proper settings in your phone before it will DL a MMS OTA.

You mention you do not need a data plan to view an MMS. I'm currently able to receive the MMS, but not able to download it. Is this what you are saying as well? or can we actually read it via wifi? Are there proper settings to use with no data plan? These MMS messages I somtimes get are just text, but for some reason they come in as MMS. SMS works great. Any thoughts or solutions?
Yes, you must set up your phone with proper MMS and SMS settings for your carrier. MMS does not need dataplan.

What is likely happening is that you do not have the proper MMS settings, either the ROM doesn't have the MMS application, or you have yet to set the settings up. So instead of getting the MMS, you get just the text with a blank "image" box or whatever because it cannot connect to the server to download the data portion. There is no way to us WiFi to do this, because the internet has no way of accessing your carriers network and obtaining that info. It is stuck in your carriers routing system, and after X amount of time will be deleted if you do not download it.
Call your carriers CS line and ask them what the proper settings are for MMS, even if they say they don't support the G1, insist that they tell you the manual settings for a smart phone... you should get APN info, Proxy and Port info, default website info(this is the site it downloads from technically), network type (ie is it WAP, Secure WAP, HTTP, Secure HTTP)... there might be more or less info needed, but those are the basics.
You can usually search the interwebs for this info as well.

And these APN settings are far and few to find but good luck if you find them, I have tried everything, every different type of APN for T-Mobile US and had absolutely no luck.
These are not facts but my own conclusion about this: What I'm afraid is that Android pushes all MMS activity through the data connection anyhow. Because after using another T-Mobile SIM, with the data connection, I was instantly able to download all my MMS pictures. So I don't think there is any correct APN setting for MMS to work without the data plan sadly. That's why I started a thread awhile ago to hopefully build support.. but I guess most people out there have the data plan or no data plan + no messaging or simply just don't care about MMS.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559805
I'm just hoping that somebody will try to fix this problem eventually, but like I've discovered there just isn't much demand for it. Personally, I want to get into Android dev but I can't say how long it'll take me to learn the ropes plus if I'll even be able to do anything about it myself.
MMS over wifi
Yeah, it is crazy that MMS is not available over wifi that we know of. I was going to call tmobile for the APN, but from reading it sounds like MMS by default goes over there new data APN? no clue. What a crappy way to make money for tmobile that they have to force customers to have the data plan. At least SMS works and other functions over wifi (which is really all I need). I don't have time for non-stop data access for my phone. Yeah, hopefully there will be an alternate fix to access MMS over wifi or another APN. Any ideas or does any one have a working APN they can provide?
I guess I'll try tmobile again for a valid APN.

[q] i can't sent/receive MMS when 3G disable -GingerDX-

Hello
1st. sorry; I have bad English language.
I've an problem in my phone X8
I cannot sending or receiving MMS when data mobile is disable
I tried SmartAPN ... this prog is close the 3g and data mobile enable but I can't sent MMS
when 3G enable I can sent/receive MMS
how i can fix this prob.
info.
1. I using GingerXD v12 ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1188486
2. In SE ROM 2.1 when dataconnection disable i can sent/receive MMS
thank yuo ,
It's a known bug on CM7 (and even CM6 i think), the Data Traffic really needs to be on so you can send or receive one.. If you don't want to waste money by having it on you need to use one of those programs you mentioned so it changes the APN of the internet connection to a false one.
EDIT: if you have problems even with SmartAPN, go to your MMS APN proprieties and change the APN Type from "mms" to "mms, supl" (no quotes and no spaces).. and if you still have problems, use APN OnOf instead of smartAPN.. but remember, data traffic needs to be on.
Hi - i have the same problem - but only on GingerCruzt. I can send and receive MMS fine on GingerDX.
Impster
I also had problem, but "mms, supl" works fine! Thanks!
thank you all ,
i was try the solution but I have the same prob. :-(
