[Q] GPU Overclock?? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm not sure quite how it works, or if the galaxy s series has the capabilities to do so, but can the GPU be overclocked? All I know is that its Cortex-A8 chip is 3 times faster than the snapdragon, and supposedly runs cooler... So is the GPU and CPU combined into the single hummingbird chip? If so, would the 1.2ghz OC clock up the GPU speed at the same time? I know that this phone is a beast already, but it would be even more fun to have this thing clocked up to 1.6ghz and if the GPU overclock is separate, maybe that can be done too...

I'm usually pretty supportive of overclocking but I think its pretty useless to overclock the gpu at this point. The captivate's GPU is faster than the GPU that will be in the next generation OMAP4/Cortex-A9 processors. There is simply nothing meaningful that can even tax the Captivate's GPU right now.
If past phones are any guide then the GPU can be overclocked and it is a separate clock from the CPU.

this is a video of the iphone running a 'rage' demo.
the captivates processor handles graphics slightly better than the iphone 4, and the iphone 4 is also underclocked.
so the captivate is capable of these graphics and more without overclocking.

Is there any chance we'll be getting the GPU drivers ported over from the Nexus S? CM7 and MIUI are apparently using them, but those ROMs are still too buggy for me. I wish we could be them going on a KH3 ROM.

Have you tried cm7/MIUI lately? Not nearly as buggy as they once were. Still a few wrinkles, but stable as a daily driver for a lot of people.

I felt that for long time and waited on the cm7/miui train for a while. I'm now running miui and love it.

Ya I was on MIUI for a while, but people complained about the phone quality when talking tom me. I switched to a KH3 for the audiance chip. I do miss the snappiness even with the FCs. Was hopeing to have my cake and eat it too.

So I just watch that honey comb video and they said its o optimized to use dual core processor. But all these tegra two phones only running froyo .
So does out means there its no point of getting these phones untill honeycomb for phones comes out .

Even if froyo is not optimized for dual-core you will still have an advantage with dual-core, just look at some benchmarks and you will see that the tegra2 will score much better than ordinary singel-core at same speed, so no need to wait.
But the performance will be even better when the device is runing honeycomb.
real world performance is we actually need here.not just some benchmark numbers. Mytouch 4g overclock to 1.4ghz can beat those numbers easily.
So why spend soo much money on first generation 2x processors.

With that opinion why even ask the Q you did?
Compare only stock to stock and OC to OC my friend..
As far as I know multi-core-support is included since 1.6. This means that if an application uses multiple threads u get a performance gain up to 100%. So Froyo is sufficent in that case.
Hower, newer android version bring additional optimizations to speed things up on multi-core-devices to tha tabble (especialy for application that either only use one thread or can't max out all cores). In 2.3 it is a multithreaded filesystem, in 3.0 it is the dalvlik-layer for executing java-based apps.
Anandtech just completed their review of the 2X and they show that Android does in fact know that you are using a dual core processor. The results seem to be especially noticeable in the browser (which is great news for me as i surf a lot on my htc hero and this is always a pain!).
Having said that, Honeycomb (and whatever it's phone counterpart will be) will put further emphasis on dual core tegra2 use.
As for real world in app differences... it's going to be like froyo install to sd.... this is something that developers need to do.. android can't force any one app to use multi-cores.. the app needs to be coded to take advantage of it.
This phone is kinda marketed to people who want to future proof themselves. So while real world experience may not differ currently with single core processors, it will change once android start's using both cores, well as two cores, instead of one core and a maid.

Tegra 2 overclocking

I already postet this in the Atrix 4G section, because they have a thread there about this topic. But they are discussing more about the locked bootloader than about overclocking and as we don't have such a thread here, I will start this one.
Perhaps you think overclocking actually does not make much sense on this device atm, as it is really fast, but I always like to get most out of my hardware that is possible.
I dont think, I would enable overclocking for everyday use now, but it would be cool to be able to do so if needed. At 1200 MHz as Nvidia had planned for the Tegra2 3D the Phone would for sure even beat the Omap 4 in Optimus 3D.
I am totaly new to Android and also to Linux, so I am not sure if this is helpful, but I have seen something very interesting in the Optimus 2x review at Anandtech.
I dont know where these variables are stored and what is needed to, but for me it looks as if we are able to change them, overclocking should be possible on the Optimus 2X.
It would be great if some oft the developers here could look into this when the Optimus Speed finally has been shipped…
I was wondering the same thing. So i checked other Tegra2 powered devices. And as far as i know none has been overclocked yet. Correct me if am wrong.
So far no overclock is needed since this phone is reaaaaaaalllly fast.
But I am sure as soon as it needs some extra power developers will figure out how to do it
Michael Huang (author of SetCPU) has just overclocked the Xoom tablet today. Now, while the Xoom is a Tegra2 device, its kernel is (apparently) Google based whereas others are nVidia based.
In overclocking the Xoom from 1GHz to 1.5GHz though, he saw about a 1/3rd increase in performance on Linpack and Quadrant. Looks promising so far.

The Reason to Overclock the Atrix in my opinion is as follows
The Linux Based Webtop is slow in reviews
So when pluged into mains power it would be very usful to overclock the device to make the most of the webtop with less lag issues making the device far more usful if you need/want that feature.
Maby possible to make a custom dock (stick fan on it) and clock higher
I'm more interested in underclocking, especially when screen is off with a screen off profile in SetCPU. What do you think is the lowest possible frequency I could set it at?
You can put all the way down. I use the same settings in both my N1 and the 2x. Saves some juice. What I really want to see is custom kernels, pref undervolted if its possible.

According to the SetCPU changelog, overclocking/underclocking is now possible:

How can you overclock with SetCPU then on o2x? Believe only the powersaving underclocking on demand is working.. overclock needs more work i believe.
The Xoom has been overclocked, but apparently the kernels are from google, which made it easier.
If anybody knows more about this, please correct me
The kernel must be adjusted to make overclock work. I got to read myself into this, but perhaps someone else knows already everything to it .

The GPU is not linked with the CPU. The GPU is overclocked in different kernels. Spica's kernel allows on the fly overclocking of the GPU.
After having this device for over a year, the only time i needed OC is for 720P Youtube or Youtube HD app. No OC on the GPU has ever been needed. Yes i have been playing around with 1.2 and 1.4, but they just consumed battery more than giving a better experience. I would go so far and say undervolt it and put it on 900Mhz.

It's been done. So very very few phones are even stable at 800, and those that could generally performed worse in benches at 800 than at lower clocks. Many of these devices bootloop above 700.
Cyanogen 8 will not come out yet since will most likely be ice cream sandwich. I am not even sure is 2.3.5 will even come out and no the devs can not overclock this device to 800mhz because is 768 is the limit of the processor. Most people's phones do not even run that smoothly at 768 anyways. If somehow the dev found a way to overclock it to 800 (impossible btw but this is just a what if kind of statement) since the processor can not handle 800 it would just overheat the thing and cause crashes.

CM8 will be next, obviously. It will be based on Ice Cream Sandwich, so no, it won't be in development until ICS is released to AOSP so that the CM team can start using that code. 2.3.5 is an update coming out soon for the Nexus S 4G that fixes wifi and network speed, as well as adding more secure NFC for Google Wallet. It won't really affect us when it is merged into CM7. ICS is expected to be Android 4.0, but it could be 3.5 if Google decides.
There is a kernel that goes over 800Mhz, but anything over 768Mhz can be unstable on some phones. I tried it and there were no real performance gains, but battery life was a lot worse. Performance was actually worse at the highest CPU clock, in my experience. Just stick with 768Mhz. It's stable and chances are that you can get even better performance at a lower clock. When i began to post there were no posts yet. They must have got posted while i was typing. So seeing as the only post at the time was the op, then yes i did read the post(s) above mine.....

I can confirm that the Godmode kernel was able to push some phones, such as mine, past 800Mhz. Although I had a faster processor speed, my battery would drain incredibly fast as well as overheat. Even though I never hit a bootloop with the kernel, the battery life, overheating, and loss of performance kept me away. Sacrificing too much for having a faster processor speed. Normally I overclock to about 729Mhz and have great battery life, speed and performance in conjunction with a min of 19Mhz and a smartass governor.

Thanks. I am glad someone at least confirmed it. I never knew about the godmode kernel as ive only been here for a little bit. Sorry for misinformed post about their not being an 800mhz kernel. As I can see, i was wrong, but also I was correct in saying that the processor can not handle it....sometimes

Yup, I'm at 806 - 19 ondemand while posting this and I can already feel it slowing down a little. 729 - 19 on demand is my best setup. I've tested a lot with trying higher setups than that but so far 729 seems to be the best for battery life and performance on every rom I've ever tried

For some reason my phone never works well with higher clock speeds no matter what rom or kernel i use. I get my best results at 710-352 performance.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I've noticed is that newer Hero's that were sold with Eclair as opposed to the original Donut, when I bought mine, are not able to reach those higher processor speeds past 691Mhz.

i bought mine at radio shack back in september and it was still on 1.5 and ive never been able to get over 768mhz without it freezing and bootlooping its different with every hero.
i stay at 352-691 ondemand and thats plenty fast for me
Mine was running 1.5 also and it will run fine at 768 but battery life suffers so I usually run at 352/710 and battery and performance are good (depends on rom kernel)

I actually got mine two weeks after it came out.....so i mean it could just be that this phone is dead now. I never had a refurb or anything. I got it wet once but it got repaired. I've only had this one the whole time. Do you think that is the issue?

just wondering why 19? Ive seen people do that but can the processor really ever do anything at 19? if so, doesnt it affect stuff like wake. Im trying it now just to see for myself. Ive been playing with a really high min value between 480 and 576 with the high at 748 and it actually doesnt only seems to affect battery life a little, both on the .29 and .35 kernels on jaybobs roms and on OMFGB.

so update, ive run it at 19/768 on demand all day and after 11hrs 13 min its at 60% thats not bad for my phone! and there was almost no performance difference. Just the slightest UI lag... this is on jaybobs 7/8 with the .29 kernel, with background data off. And my regular usage which is not a lot. but for me its good. i wish I had tried it ages ago.

I believe that you can set the ramp up frequency and that may help with the lag. Setcpu, advanced settings, I think?

[Q] Fastest Captivate 2.3 Rom?

Which of the current 2.3 ROMs is considered the fastest/most responsive? Or which ROM would be considered the fastest based on the mods & tweaks used by the developers? I'm not to versed in the technical side of things to discern which tweaks/mods/kernels/etc give way to the most stability, speed, and response and would like the community's opinions on the matter.
Probably CM7, I just started using it and there is never any lag. I haven't even OC'd it yet. This also comes with the price of having to live off a wall charger though.

If you mean fastest in clock speeds, then thats a balance betwen rawr clock and how much battery life you can get out of it. Keep in mind these phones clock easily 1.2ghz-1.3ghz no issues past that you need to increase the voltage. So you can in theory get 1.6ghz-1.8ghz but you will live next to a charger. If you mean fastest on how it feels Id have to say Continuum moved awesome few months back (haven't used it in a while) Atomic Fusion if the ext4 version comes out. But there you should just test them out.
On a side not if you want to OC your phone and not have to pay for the oc app, then Id suggest you stick to I9000 ports or AOSP's like CM7 or MIUI. Native roms like Cognition 5, Atomic Fusion and Nuclear Fusion need Tegrak for OC/UV.
Which of the I9000s seem to run the fastest/smoothest? I've been looking at Dlev and Darky but how does Apex/Symply GS II/Mosaic/Sensation compare?

I actually read in the Glitch kernel thread that when overclocking, higher voltages doesn't always mean more stability. I'm OC'd at 1.5ghz right now really stable and I was UV'd at -50mv but I just dropped it to -75mv to see if its stable there. I'll keep dropping it till I have issues.
Oh yeah, and CM7's battery life has got WAY better over time, so I'm not having to worry about charging all the time either.

From my experience to maintain a stable phone i over volt the "step" that's overclocked, and then undervolt the other "steps". Im by no means a expert nor is there a full proof way to do it. Each phone kinda reacts differently on the overclocking past 1.2-1.3ghz.
Which of the I9000 roms should theoretically run faster due to the tweaks/mods used by the developers without the need to overclock?
There if no need to overclock for daily use. Only if you are playing very demanding games. And only during those games.
As for fastest rom....have a search this question gets asked a lot with always the same answer and result:
There is no best rom, all phones are different as well as tastes, what's best for me on my device may not be on yours. Flash and try a few and make you own decision...
CM7 is fastest but Display and Sound quality is not as good as stock ROM .
Before school started for me and i couldnt access a charger when i wanted to, i used MIUI at a stable 1.6 GHz ALL of the time with odemand govenor and i got like 18 hours with moderate use, on Glitch V12! And you dont need to overvolt for higher speeds i have tested it and its better to undervolt higher clocks, i get better battery and performance!

Well i ran 1.6 GHz undervolted at ever clock speed fine, had better performance than over volting, so its different

Galaxy Note Using Mali-400MP GPU (Outdated GPU)?

hello guys..i heard that galaxy note and other samsung device are using an outdated GPU (Mali-400MP GPU)...so is it a little "fail" for our note to have an outdated GPU?plss give ur opinion.. thanks guys

It's so much faster than the sgx540 in the nexus it's ridiculous and since my choice was between those two I'm very happy with it.

Check out the real world performances. Mali 400 outclasses Adreno 220 easily.
The weakpoint of Mali is geometry performance, but it does not matter much with mobiles until now as mobile games are not geometry heavy.
On the other hand, the OpenGL ES 2.x performance and real world performance of Mali is excellent.
With the clock speed of exynos in Note which actually gives much better real world performance with Mali 400 than even SGS2, it runs circles around Adreno 220 powered devices like sensation and even SGX540 powered devices.

Yeah well Scott Adams is wayyyyyyy past his heyday (heck, even being relevant).... haven't read him since 2007 or so, when he started dabbling in intelligent design woo and sexist claptrap...
for being a heavy mobile gamer
i can assure you that the mali 400 on the note does very well with the latest games (asphalt7, dead trigger to name a few) despite having to compute for a much higher resolution display than other phones...
and with a little overclocking (tegrak app or gl notecore kernel) gpu performance can get sky high.

The note was released ten months ago but still its gpu is better than all the others except sgs3 and and maybe one x..
Btw do you even own a note?? Did you every notice any lag in any game??

The NOTE's and SGS3's GPU are the same.
However, the S3 is built on a smaller 32nm die-size, so it means it uses less space and less power for same performance. Samsung uses this advantage to clock the frequency much higher than the NOTE (which is built on a 45nm die).
Also, the S3 implements a new, updated driver for the gpu and squeezes more performance out. This was a same move Samsung made with the SGX540, which is also a very fast gpu. The original SGS was clocked real-low and had outdated drivers... after stealing the driver sources from the LG with OMAP 4440 SoC, the SGS (with 4.0.3) was performing in the same league as the 2011/2012 devices.

Also, the S3 implements a new, updated driver for the gpu and squeezes more performance out. This was a same move Samsung made with the SGX540, which is also a very fast gpu. The original SGS was clocked real-low and had outdated drivers... after stealing the driver sources from the LG with OMAP 4440 SoC, the SGS (with 4.0.3) was performing in the same league as the 2011/2012 devices.

I know that that both the note and sgs3 has same gpu.. But the one in sgs3 its more powerful cause you said it's overclocked and has better drivers..
Btw do you know why the mali in sgs3 gets so high benchmark scores even wih the 720p screen? I mean is it all due to oc and better drivers?

Better drivers + a little O'C makes the overwhelming difference.
I mean the NOTE comes with *only* 2 cores and *slow* gpu... after I customized it, its running toe-to-toe with the HTC One X (Tegra3).
An easier way to understand is to look at the new RIM PlayBook.
It's got the same processor as the Gnex (Galaxy Nexus) however its much much faster, especially in browsing. It decimates it. It even decimates the ASUS Transformer Prime Infinity (O'C Tegra3 + ICS).... or the Nexus7 (U'C Tegra3 + JBean).
You are only as fast as your slowest component. In the case of Android, its the high-level (slow) implemented software.
= Getting a faster soc with more cores and more ram doesn't really increase performance that much.

By toe to toe with the one x do you mean benchmarks or real life perfomance..

But I don't live by the benchmarks. I mean have you tried some of the HD Apps from TegraZone. On stock TouchWizz, the NOTE really struggles. With a custom setup, I don't get much/any problems.
Yeah, I do frequent engadget... also on heaps of other sites.

Exactly. Even though the Playbook has its many flaws (owned two both with screen/USB issues) it was a powerhouse. Multimedia was outstanding and web surfing was by far the fastest.
But the OS, QNX, is to thank for that. If the Playbook was running android it would be nothing out of the ordinary. As much as I love Android it really is not as efficiant as QNX

Recently I had a doubt about if it's possible to unlock the 2 locked remaining cores in the Galaxy Note N7000? Because I realize that the Note only uses 2 of the 4 GPU cores... It's there a possibility to do this? How?
i think mali 400 is a good GPU because Note1 and Note2 using it. and really nice GPU for gaming
