3.5mm Jack Causing Music to Skip. - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
I'm having the same problem as a lot of the people in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-625731.html
..where any movement of the plug (headphones, 3.5 jack to jack cable in the car, pc speakers - but not the stock 'phones) causes random skipping of any music that I'm playing. I literally can't use the headphone socket unless I use the the in-ears that came with the phone.
Did this ever get resolved? Anyone still having the same issue?
It's bugging me that I can't listen to the music on my phone in the car...

Wow, I thought I was the only one! It used to happen to me all the time on CM 5.0.8, and CM 6 RC1...It's a wierd bug, as I didn't even know what was causing it at first, then once I found the issue, I couldn't replicate it.
I haven't had this issue in a while, however...Try out one of the CyanogenMod nightlies or RC3, see if that solves your problem.

Try 'Headset Blocker' by Roadkill in the market. It intercepts the headphone control signals.

@wdfowty: I'm using CM 6RC3. Its done it on every rom I've used.
@-dlee: I'll try it, thanks.

Lame, sorry to hear that. I hope that app works for you, post back if it does!

Second the reply to Headset Blocker. Drove me nuts until I installed that.

Most probably it's your headset connector having bad contacts, resulting in it being sensitive and reacting to very small plug movements with connect/disconnect of the "control" connector (which is shorted to ground when you plug a regular headphone jack).

Yep, Headset Blocker worked perfectly.
Thanks -dlee..

fuze call people when headphone adapter plugged in

Using an ENERGY Rom Mercury, but I have tried other roms as well. When I plug in my headphone adapter and then attempt to play music through a 3.5mm audio jack, it calls the last person I dialed... repeatedly. Any suggestions?
Similar problem with Stock Headphones
I use to have the same thing happen with me when I used the stock headphones. The closest thing to a fix I could find for it was to hold down the button on the headphones as I plugged them in. It wasn' a 1005 fix but significantly reduced accidental calls. You might be having a similar problem with the adapter/headphone you're using so you might want to mess around a bit with any buttons you have on the adapter/headphones.
I have noticed this behavior as well, though I am not using the latest 7/22 ROM. It is not consistent though so I cannot say exactly when it happens, or why at this point.
This should be nothing to do with your ROMS. I had the exact same problem with my stock headphones after many months of use on a stock Touch Pro. I think its just related to physical damage of the headphones which somehow causes it to trigger the 'call last dial' function. I replaced my headhphones and everything has been running sweet since.

3.5mm plug issue: Auto starting Music Player

Is there a way to disable the music player from starting up automatically when I plug a speaker/head phone into the 3.5mm plug? I don't know what the phone is doing, but I don't always want to play music when I plug in a speaker to the phone.
jchap2k
im also having that issue and also the slightest movement of the headphone jack makes the music player constantly skip songs and its very annoying. We need to find a fix for this.
This also happen on bluetooth as well. When i get in the car and phone connects to radio the media player starts as well. Sucks, i haven't figured out how to stop this media player from auto starting.
? What, your guys music players starts automatically when you plug in the headphones?
Mine doesnt, and I wish it did. lol
Had this problem as well. Was more noticable when JIT was enabled on CM5.0b2. Haven't noticed it on 5.0b3 with JIT off, but that doesn't mean it's fixed... very annoying. As a work around (which might be why I'm no longer noticing it) I created a playlist with a single, short sound effect as the only 'song' in the playlist. I never use the default music player, or any player for music on my phone for that matter, so this was a pretty simple one-time work around. I remember when we had a very similar, if not the same problem, on Cyanogen's G1 rom, and I had used this same workaround.

Mine did this on the stock ROM. Now I'm on CM5B3+highmem, and haven't noticed it yet.

I first noticed this problem on CM5B3. Happens any time I connect the phone to my speakers.
Weird, my Nexus doesn't do this. In fact I just added a feature (not released yet) to have it as an option! So, WTF?
I can't recall for sure, but I believe my phone did this when I had the stock rom on it. But since I started using Cyanogen's rom, I have yet to experience this.

I wonder why some experience this and some don't. Did you try twisting the plug around once plugged in? Plug movement seems to trigger it for me, but once it starts I can't get it to stop until I just unplug the phone from the speakers.
Mine is completely random, and to make things worse, it's doing it to Pandora as well. I'll run through my '6 skips' an hour in mere minutes, and on accident. Very, very annoying... It happens not only randomly, but sometimes when I pick up the phone, or touch the 3.5mm jack in any way, but not 'every time' I touch it... it's incredibly odd... I really hope it's not a hardware fault
Ive actually been wishing for that option on my Droid lol. Lucky!
Are you guys using the stock headset? i think it only does it when you do. If you use others, it doesnt?

Not using a headset at all. Just a 3.5mm->3.5mm jack in my car

Mine skips with a similar setup. Sometimes twisting the cable around in the jack helps. Still annoying.
I have seen this 'issue' reported on 3 other phones so far, the Tmobile Pulse (UK), Hero, G1, and now the Nexus One.
However the main thread i can think of was over at the MoDaCo forums, for the pulse.

I have the same problem too. Gets real annoying when listing to an audiobook that's 10hrs long and it all of a sudden skips to the beginning. I think it has to do with how the headphone controls are implemented in hardware - shorting out the channels together or to ground - I lost my original headphones - and haven't wired up a pair to test. I think that "cheaper" headphone cables have less insulation between the channels which then shorts. I noticed this with a cheaper 1/8" to 1/8" adapter.. vs a sony gold plated one. (the channels were in separate insulation on the sony one). If there was only a way to turn off the headphone controls in the default media player, then it wouldn't happen... maybe i'll just remove it from the phone all together.

My headphones needed a bit of force to get them in properly and recognised. I think, maybe they were just not recognised the first couple of time. I'll have another go later, I've only tried once.
If I push to hard, speakers take over. I have to move it for it to play on my earphones. Pretty stuoid . Calling Google today since its my day off.
It has to be just right for it to go through the earphones. Putting it in the jack doesn't cut it because it plays through the speakers. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I WAANT TO WATCH PORN.. LOL

ok is working ,i realize that it need to be pushed all the way in lol.
for some reason was not obvious to me, i guess because on my Gnexus don't need to force it that much.
I noticed same thing. So you had to apply more pressure to force it in? I was afraid of breaking the damn thing. I can't get it to recognize any of my headphones but will play out through my lil surround sound system that has a headphone plug. I noticed that the plugs don't seem to go all the way in. I will try to force it in harder..lol.
I need to get some dedicated headphones. Only ones I have are the ones with a built in mic attached. Those won't go in all the way no matter how hard you push. Its likely to break the headphone jack if you keep trying to force them. Ones with mic. attached have 3 rings on the plug. Straight stereo headphones have only 2 rings, which is what I need.

[Q] Headphone and Bluetooth Audio Weirdness

I'm wondering if anyone else is having strange behavior either with Bluetooth audio or headphones. The phone is AT&T stock rooted 1.26.502.10 with unlocked bootloader and CWM. Here's a brief summary of what I am seeing:
When listening to audio books using headphone (Audio Book Player app) when I place the phone in my pocket in a locked state, it will wake up and dial the last number. It seems like there is a pocket sensor that is tripped and initiates a call. This can repeat itself several times. The dialing attempt tends to terminate itself if I don't intervene in time. I have not been able to reliably repeat the behavior in a predictable manner.
For bluetooth audio music (paired with an up-to-latest Ford Sync system) there is inconsistent behavior when using Google Play Music. Sometimes everything is fine. Sometimes on-screen (car side) audio controls will not work. Sometimes it will skip to the next song after possibly 10 seconds on the current song.
This is driving me crazy. If I don't figure it out, I'll throw on a custom ROM this weekend,
Thanks!
I have not had any of those issues so unfortunately I cant be of much help. The one problem I have had is that I have a bluetooth headset that also does media playback, which I always disable when in the car because my car does not do bluetooth and I want the audio to go out the headphone jack. Everytime I disconnect the headset it rechecks the "media" option on the headset and my audio plays from my headset and I have to go back to the bluetooth options and uncheck it. Very annoying.
Looks like it is a hardware issue. I can replicate by turning or wiggling the headphone. Problem appears to be in the headphone jack.

I have experienced the song skip as well. I can't successfully recreate it, but it always occurs when I'm on my motorcycle. At first I thought it was the headphone control being depressed, but I have eliminated that. So I think it does have to do with vibration/movement of the phone somehow.

Try putting pressure from various angles on the headphone plug as well as pressing on the case in the corner where the headphone is inserted. Much weirdness ensues in a very repeatable manner.

Hmmm...nothing happening when I do any of that.
I found that the wind across the microphone is somehow triggering the skip, for me anyways. I use the headphones that came with my One and I simply placed a piece of tape over the microphone. No more song skips.
Very strange as nothing is activating the voice control in the first place.

[Q] Headphone Jack Not Working!

So I decided to use my headphones today for the first time and the sound is distorted and Google now would automatically start every ten seconds! Anyone else having this issue? I used my headphones on my laptop with no problems. This really blows.

I didn't have this exact problem. I did get the google now thing a lot. And only some times. Like some days it wouldn't happen at all and others it wouldn't stop. I also have been having a problem with if I kneel/bend my body to much it'll shut the music off.

Clear the dust of headphone jack and give it a try and also give it a look that if the headphone is plugged in properly or not. I mean if it's Completely inserted or not
I have a similar problem. When using the headphone jack i just receive sound on one channel, the other one is mute. The only way to receive sound on both channel is to force the headphone plug to the left
