cognition 2.2 beta9 installs but loops recoverymode - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so I'm an android newb. My captivate is rooted. I have that over the air update that ATT sent out. So I went to the forum post in the Dev section that was the cognition beta 9 for eclair. I downloaded it but in on my internal SD card. I opened up ROM manager and downloaded clockwork recovery mod. From there I selected install Rom from SD card and selected the cog beta 9. I selected to do a backup. Then it went into recoverymode and began backing up my phone when it was done it immediately began to install the Rom. Install was succefull but then I couldn't get out of recovery mode. I tried reinstalling rebooting taking battery out but as soon as it would start to reboot it would go into recovery mode without me holding the volume up or down buttons. After an hour of no success I decided to restore my back up. What did I do wrong? Remember I am an android newb so if you see what I did wrong please explain in simple terms. Thankx.

Honestly? What you did wrong was installing a ROM without sufficient research. The Cog thread had plenty of people reporting this problem within an hour of B9 being released. It's a problem with the ROM, the only reliable way to install it right now is through Windows with Odin.

I stated I was new to android. I tried looking through the forms but all the terms confused me. Sorry that I came to a forum for help and to learn about android. Sorry for not meeting your standards.

There aren't any standards, just the expectation that if you want to LEARN that you'll READ. Just take your time and don't shy away from reading and, most importantly, knowing what it is that you're flashing to your device. If you're new to Android then don't put something on your phone without reading up on other people's experiences. You asked me what you did wrong so I told you, other than that it sounds like you did everything correctly!

Your right. I'm sorry. I was being arrogant. But I've been looking all over the web for a link to download 8.1 straight to my phone. I don't have access to a computer so I can't so beta 9. Would you happen to know a link to a Download for 8.1?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

No I don't but I have it. My internet connection is terrible so it'll take a while but I'll upload it to rapidshare and post it here later unless someone beats me to it.
Personally, I'm far too queasy to risk flashing custom roms without having Odin as a fall-back, cheers for your courage haha.

Haha thanks, but seeing as I don't have access to a computer, do I really have a choice? Call me brave, or call me a loser for not having a working computer.

If DG still has it on his site, you could take the current download link and change beta9 to beta8.1

Stock ROM download

For some reason the nandroid backup I made of the stock ROM before I flashed cognition has been corrupted. After installations and reboot it stays on att world phone screen. I would like to have a backup of the stock ROM so where can I download it? I don't have access to a computer therefore I can't use Odin. Am I screwed?

Actually the cognition download website has a JH7 OTA stock download link, I would give you the link but I can't post links yet because the system won't let me (in case of spamming). So I think you should be good! Although I dunno how you're going to get it onto your SD card, but I suck at understanding these things, someone else can probably tell you.

How'd you do that if you couldn't get past the at&t bootup screen? Not doubting you, just curious.
Also, just so I know for my own personal knowledge, how DOES this work? Having a clean backup available on my phone may come in handy, and I definitely have the space for it on my SD card. If I download it on the browser, and it's on my SD card somewhere (wherever is the default download location), how do I add it to clockwork? If I go into ROM Manager I can see that I can click on install rom from sd card --> click the downloads file --> and then I suppose ROM manager would detect the JH7 rom (right?) but if I just downloaded it from the link and had it sitting on my sd card, it WOULDN'T be on clockwork's list if I went into recovery mode, would it? If not is there a way to easily do this right on my phone?
Sorry I know this is pretty basic stuff for most of the people on this forum but like I said before I'm not tech savvy. I just love gadgets This would give me piece of mind too, because I'm getting close to flashing cognition, which will be my first time (and perhaps only time, unless it gets crazy better after the source code for froyo on captivate comes out) flashing a new ROM.
This is a really old post, but i think it has a lot of what you need to know.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=744042&highlight=clockworkmod
Well see I was sill able to get in recovery mode, but if I didn't go into recovery mode it would stay on the at t boot screen. So no mater how many times I tried to restore it, it would always remain on the boot screen unless I went into recovery. So I flashed cognition from clockwork and downloaded it that way. For some reason none of my nandroid backups ever work. They always install but won't boot. Because of this I just created a folder with all the roms that I have in their .zip form. So if I ever want to flash a different rom I just go to clockwork recovery and instal from the sd. No backups.

Three final questions before 1st ROM Flash?

I just watched the 3 part You Tube Video on Flashing Cognition ROM to Captivate,I need to ask 3 things. First the video shows the One Click Root method though computer. I already have my root rooted with z4root app is this OK. After the new ROM is on the guy went to Market and got Ti Backup and he side loaded it can't you just load Std. way though Market?( I have the Paid Ver. of Ti Backup) Third question on the video he stated to use "restore All Apps with Data" but written on the Screen says to use "Restore Missing apps with data",which is it? I hope this my last question but I really want to sure of what I am doing before I try this.
Thanks for help
Would have been better suited in the General forum, but..
Rooting with z4mod = fine.
Getting TiBu from market = ...fine.
Restore all apps with data = literally restores all of your backups and data
Restore missing apps with data = restores apps that are not installed on the phone, ignoring ones that are installed on the phone.
Best to ask in Q&A section, but I'll still help you out.
1. Yes, that's fine. The way you root it doesn't matter, as long as it's rooted.
2. Not sure why he'd go to the Market to get it then sideload, but yes, you can get it straight from the Market, but make sure you know how to keep your donate version after a flash, as flashes (usually) wipe /data.
3. Restore Missing Apps with Data.
Thanks guys I really wasn't sure where to Post this. Yes I have Backup of Ti Backup folder on my computer.
Thanks again

Yes. I have odin on computer and I have checked to make sure I can get into 'Download Mode". I have also load ROM Manger and made Image file of my Stock 2.1.1 ROM and have saved on Computer along with Pictures,Ringtones and have Contacts saved to Sim card.
Sounds like you're good to go then! Definitely made a lot more precautions and backed up a lot more than I did the first time, and that's definitely a good thing!

Serendipity 5.12

Ok, so i just flashed this rom and so far so good, no problems flashing, which i am surprised as this is the first time i've done this.
The only issue i have is that there is no email app. I guess i should of gone into the kitchen and got that, but i was overwhelmed and just plain forgot.
Is there anyway that i can get that without having to reflash the rom completely?
Thanks
Sure. Just download the zip from the kitchen. Reboot into recovery and flash the zip. Any of the add-ons can be flashed. You don't have to reflash the rom again.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Hey thanks. I thought by adding those it would include the complete rom also. I'll give it a try.
Ok so i went to the kitchen and got what i needed. It all seemed to work properly except the Samsung keyboard. I really don't like theis roms keyboard. I like the colors and stuff. Should i try and reinstall that or does that go hand in hand with Samsung mms apk too?
I'm not sure about that. There's a "Serendipity Q&A" thread at the Captivate Q&A section. You'll get a quick reply there.

New to Rom Flashing - URGENT Help needed!

Hi all,
Sorry if i sound stupid, but I am new to all of this. I am trying to flash a gingerbread ROM onto my Rogers branded captivate. Currently I am running Rogers stock Froyo.
I have rooted and unlocked my phone using one click root, and the SGS unlock tool from the android market. I have also applied Ryans OCLF. I have busybox installed and the lasted version of Rom Manager.
However, every time i go to backup my stock rom using rom manager, nothing happens. I try to first flash the Clockwork Mod recovery, select the Captivate file and let the phone reboot, black screen with a yellow exclamation point in a white triangle with a Droid device laying under it. It will sit there forever until I manually restart the phone, at which point it acts fine.
I have backed up using titanium backup but cannot do it thru ROM manager. I have read countless forums, but it havent found a solution that works.
So i decided to proceed without a backup. I tryed to put the phone in download mode using the buttons so that I can flash it using ODIN but it doesnt go into download mode using any of the buttom press methods. I have tried to reinstall the packages from the boot menu, but i then get an error saying "e: failed to verify whole signature...."
I have also put a copy of the recently leaked gingerbread rom on my SD card and tried to install the ROM using rom managers install ROM from SD card, but i get the same black screen with yellow exclamation point and nothing happens until i maually start the phone.
I have no clue what I am missing? How to fix this? I have read and watched so many tutorials, followed all the steps. THey seem so easy on paper, but nothing that is supposed to happen, happens for me. Anyone have any suggestions on what I am doing wrong?
Please help!!
You need to follow installation instructions in the thread for whatever GB rom you are installing TO THE LETTER.
Which one are you trying?
You need to search for fixing the 3e recovery. 3e won't let you install custom roms. Also rom manager is just a gui interface for clockwork mod so in. wouldn't use it

I was trying to install the Official Gingerbread 2.3.3 for Captivate that was just leaked for the ATT captivate. I beleive the build number is I897UCKF1.
I do remember seeing the 3e recovery in the boot menu. Thanks alot, I will try to find a recovery fix and try that, then post the update.
Thanks alot for the suggestions so far. Its greatly appreciated!
Please for the love of all that is good in the world, do some research before you brick yourself for good. All of your issues would have not happened had you read more first before jumping in. Your absolutely right, I did ALOT of reading, been doing so alot over a few weeks. Unfortunately, (or perhaps, I did not do enough digging) none of the tutorials, even the ones for beginners that i found on this forum mentioned anything about finding a fix for the 3e recovery. No one mentioned that the 3e Recovery bundled with the Rogers version of Froyo did not allow the install of custom roms, it also did not allow backups. Thanks to Crystalhand for letting me know this.
Anyway i found this link which helped:

I am FINALLY able to make a full backup image of my stock ROM and apps using CWM. This puts me more at ease now knowing i can also revert to stock if i install a rom that is not working properly for me.
The backup is completing as I type this. I will update again once I am able to install the gingerbread Rom I wanted to install.
Thanks again to all of you for the help!
that backup is not to restore the stock rom directly from whatever you flash. that is an imaage of your set up on stock rom. so you have to use odin to flash back to that stock rom you are on then restore that backup and it will be like you never flashed anything at all. if you just restore that backup onto the custom rom you flash it will not work properly.
the app backup your making with titanium backup will restore your apps on whatever you flash, but the rom backup doesnt work like that.
I would suggest using designgears odin 1 click, becuase no offence but you seen new and that would be least likely way for you to hard brick going to gb... Good luck

Flashing is usually easy and safe (for the most part). But if something happends and it gets bricked u could always make/buy jigs. Easiest way to make I've seen is
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841512
Or you can buy them for about $8 maybe more depending your location (making em can cost less). The only thing I haven't tested the jig with is messed up bootloaders, example flashing gb bootloaders and flash froyo secundaries, everything else the jig works (atleast my experience)

[Q] Accidentally wiped rom from Samsung Galaxy Exhibit 4g.. help!

Hey everybody, new to the forum.. glad to be here!
Here's the deal.. I have googled and searched xda as well as other forums and can not seem to find the answer I am looking for,,
Here's what happened...
I was running 2.3.6. Used CWM and root zip to root my phone. That all worked fine, but next, like a dummy, I went through and started deleting stock apps and accidentally deleted my Live Wallpapers and Wallpapers. So, I used an app (I feel bad for not being able to remember which one, but in the midst of panic I went into last night, it slipped my mind) to unroot it.
When I did this, the stock apps didn't return. I'm guessing because I didn't back them up. So, next I tried to install Flash2stock, thinking that would get me back to where I needed to be. Well, somehow in the menu, I thought it would be a good idea to wipe the rom and everything else.
So, now when I turn my phone on it will boot to "Samsung Galaxt Exhibit 4g" screen and then just boot loop.
In my googling yesterday, I found a page about using ODIN and how I could use it to flash back to stock with my phone. I tried and tried, but Odin will not recognize my phone. I have the correct drivers installed (as far as I can tell) but no luck..
So, I'm here to ask you root gurus about solutions. Are there other methods to restoring my stock rom and getting my phone working again?
or am I just missing something with the Odin stuff?
Please, please, please help! I thank you so much in advance. Not having a phone sucks!
Try uninstalling the drivers and re-installing the ones from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_Exhibit_4G
PS: Have you put your phone into download mode before connecting it to your computer? Volume down and power should get you there.

Thank you for sending me that link. I did not know that I needed a different driver for download mode.. unfortunately both links provided in the wiki page do not work. I am going to google it again and see if I can find them somewhere else.. or if you know of another link that would rule.
And yes I did. I believe I did so correctly. Once the screen with the yellow "!" came up, I pressed the Vol up to get into download mode, then I plugged in my phone, then started Odin. Odin showed the message "Please connect Phone".
I'm running Windows 7 32-bit. And my computer thinks the other driver is called "mtp driver". This is draining, but I am determined to not let a phone beat me
I have done this before, since you have cwm on your phone, all you need to do is download the flash2stock zip to your external sd. Flash via cwm and wait for it to finish, then reboot and let your phone sit for roughly 10 mins. You should be good after that

Thanks again guys. I finally found the srivers I needed and got Odin ti recorgnize my phone.
The method with the sd card would have worked perfectly, but i do not have an sd card reader for my computer. Will definitely be investing in one soon!
When Odin set this guy back up, it install 2.3.5 bavk on here, which is fine because I plan to root and customize anyway.
Any suggestions for kernels/roms i should check out? I have done minimal looking at the ones for my drvice, but intend to.
My main concern is functionality. I need my camera and other apps to work. If they dont, then to me it defeats the purpose.
Also, I do remember the joy os rom that looks like an iphone-ish layout.. Has anybody made one that looks like a windows phone? Ive used the launchers in the past, but it would be cool if there was a rom out there.
Thanks again yall!

If you want a windows phone look you could get Cyanogenmod and install a windows phone theme. Then just get Launcher 8. The theme is pretty extensive and does the whole system. Then just get apps like metro messaging to replicate core apps. Also there is a Windows phone keyboard out there somewhere.
