SlideScreen Mods - Android Themes

Okay, so thanks to some members for helping me find this homescreen replacement. However, I have searched for hours looking for some kind of mod for this thing, and I haven't found a one. Is it not possible to manually tweak settings like color, for instance? I can't believe this UI isn't as hyped as I find it to be.
So, can we get some devs on this to give us some tweaks and start a thread?

I know what you mean. I just d.l.'d it and really like the design/idea of it all. Right now it is very limited to what you can tweak. If you go to thier website and check out the forum over there, alot of people are giving thier ideas of what they would like to see done to this app. Hopefully the dev's are listening....

Yeah, but I think the requests are falling on deaf ears. Multiple people are saying over in their forums are saying they are simply doing compatibility updates now. I thought some Devs here at XDA could take matters into their own hands. But I just don't think there are enough people interested in it, you know? At the time of this post, 395 views of this thread and only one reply. Supply and demand, we need more people to speak up!

Very true. I'm gonna hang on to the free version for a while and see what happens. Time will tell.

I stick using this for a long time. a bit sad I couldn't "beautify" my home like others do. but in my opinion the standards color scheme are the best there is. and don't you think modding it (like adding a shortcut to one page of widget screen or a dash of power control which I really want as an upgrade) is the same as altering the whole program? is that against licencing problem? I'm quite a noob in this area...

I have no idea. It seem's that it would be, but then again, people are porting SENSE over to non-HTC devices as well, so who knows? I don't know if the free version is open source or not.

Please read. Answer to the tb fix is here, along w/ a question to e.v.e.r.y.b.o.d.y.

I ASK THAT YOU READ ALL THIS BEFORE I GET TO THE FIX, BECAUSE THIS IS A MULTILAYERED TOPIC. I WANT EVERYONE TO READ THIS, NOT JUST DEVS OR SENIORS, BUT ALL THE LURKERS AND MEMBERS WHO'VE NEVER POSTED. I WILL ACCEPT ALL SUGGESTIONS AND IDEAS.
THAT MEANS YOU. AND YOU. AND THATS RIGHT...EVEN YOU!
IN THIS POST, I WILL DISCUSS BRIEFLY MY PLANS FOR THE FUTURE OF MY HERO, HOW I WILL BRING MY SUCCESS TO PHONES AROUND THE USA, HOW I WILL JOIN THE LEAUGES OF DAMAGE, AND FLIPZ, AND ESPECIALLY DARCH, WHO WHILE WATCHED FROM A DISTANCE, WHEN THE TIME CAME FOR IT, BROUGHT ME THE ANSWER. AT THE END, I HAVE A VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION, TO BE FOLLOWED BY THE FIX[EDIT: REALITY; COMING SOON][sooner with your support!]
3 year lurker. xda is the only forum I've taken apart of in the community, and to a small sucess. I've actaully managed to help, learn, and now its time I give back to the community.
I FIRMLY BELIEVE I HAVE THE SKILLS REQUIRED TO BRING SOMETHING NEW TO THE TABLE, AND HAVE ENOUGH TO SPLIT IT BETWEEN EVERY PERSON SITTING AT THAT TABLE. WILL YOU JOIN ME AT THIS TABLE?

If anyone has ever looked at my profile, then you know I've only been a member since March 25th, and have been made a senior in just over a week(not that I'm bragging...). I'm no spammer, all my posts have been legit, and I have actually helped people. I still consider myself a noob, but I do believe I have earned my seniority, and hopefully the support of all the main devs, who have helped me beyond belief, and have responded to any major question I had, especially with what Ive been working on lately.
If you've logged on within the past 2 weeks, and followed my posts at all, then you know that even if I dont know the answer, I offer suggestions, and more importantly support. I distinguish flames, stomp on the trolls, and still manage to bring my ideas to the table, so its time to test and see if I can make these idea's come true.
I cannot do this without your help.
I am now going to quote one the the best devs on this forum, with the fix.

I think you're best bet would be to write an app to keep the trackball light forever on instead of trying to rewrite most of the frameworks and deal with all the dependencies to fix the trackball light.
if you really want to go and make the trackball stay always on by rewriting some code, i'd suggest you first look inside the framework jars with baksmali and find any lines which reference to the trackball, and see if you can somehow manipulate it to constantly echo 1 to the trackball led device in /dev to constantly stay on.

If I'm going to start understanding the Android platform to the degree that Darch and co do, the best place to start would be writing my first application (this will expose me to the framework, the commands, and how to manipulate the OS like never before). Something I've looked into, and have tried a couple things.
-keeping in mind, that in all reality, Sprints final release will give the option to decide light or touch responsive...at least, I hope so...-
I get my laptop back tomaro, and I will be studying the SDK to the T, and with the support of you guys, I will write an app to work on any 2.1 ROM, that will give you the option to keep the trackball light on or let it remain light sensitive[beta, first release] and eventually, options that will blow your mind. Things that handcent might incorporate, so you only have to use this app to pimp out the stock messaging app. Speed of flash. Customize vibration. Haptic feedback when clicking the trackball (links, function buttons, or just sitting on your homescreen, and you get that urge to just enjoy the pleasure of your customized vibration.) [future release, always FREE]
I dont know how long it will take me to learn the SDK enough to set something up from nothing and make this farfetched idea. I was hoping that someone could give me the scource code to a related app; handcent would be amazing, but something like Trackball Alert for the nexus one (its something, not nothing :-\) would be cool too. Or if you have programming skills, please, lets team up, I'm reading tutorials now. If I can complete "Hello Android", I'm sure I can make this happen.
THIS IS THE QUESTION THAT I ASK OF THE ENTIRE XDA COMMUNITY (lurkers, seniors, devs, and members who just want to test and give feed back)
WILL YOU SUPPORT ME?
If I ask a question (dont worry, this thread your reading now has gone through four topic changes to avoid clutter, I'll be sticking with this thread for updates, releases, and changelogs -
I might start one more thread to keep up on bugs-) will you help? Will you subscribe and help my idea come to life, and bring a whole new customization option app. Will the main devs take part, seeing as how this app could very well be included in future releases of their ROMS (I'll talk about my ROM idea's in another update) Will the seniors with a sick attitude be able to put their frustrations and rude answers in their pocket while posting in this thread? Bring positive energy in, with advice and sugestions, and crys of "good luck!"?
If its a team effort, its hardly an effort at all.
the basis of what what we have so far. i know what files need to be edited, this time im sure its [sys/class/leds/button-backlight] in this directory, there are sensor files, a "trigger file"(quite sure this will play a major role) that contains a series of commands that seem to tell the backlights and sensors how and when to act. I'm sure apps like Handcent and Trackball alert mess with the same files (and if not, what do they mess with to make these changes? would installing and taking a look at the permissions be a good place to start?). Anyone know how to get in touch with the devs, or some scource code of an app that affects the trackball? This would be a great start.

quick rundown of my rom idea's. some of you read my MAJOR INTERNAL MEMORY ISSUE thread, which you all rose magnificently to the occasion, and I couldnt be happier. It was true team work, something I know we can do if we just unite like we did yesterday. You all solved my problem, and have proven to me the members of XDA are capable of anything, especially when united.
the fact is, damages latest leaks are the best platform to build upon, as when the final release surfaces, and we get an official RUU, it will work truely flawlessly. so this is most certainly what we need to base the app off of at first, as its the only one with the closest trackball fix. if darch and flipz n fresh all want to encorporate it into their ROMS, they more than entitled too, as I hope to get help from them in certain areas. my issue with the latest sprint leak: the OS is so big, it leaves you with barely any internal memory, and you pretty much have no choice but to use a2sd. ive never had to use a2sd on my hero, and this is disppointing (damage, this is NOT a shot at you, its a fact, one I plan on helping you adress. im in the middle of working on a cleaner foundation for you to work on). the rom will be fully "sensable" with some tweaks like that of no other. i will build on the foundation you've laid, to create a new foundation for you to build on (once more leaks surface)
[/\]
im off for the day, except for occasionaly visits on my Hero, so please feel free to comment. I'm looking for someone to help build this app, so anyone with app programming skills, PM your GTALK and we can chat about idea's. in the meantime, maybe someone knows a open scource app that would allow us to build off?
dear damage, darch, and flipz, please PM me your GTALK if your interested...although I could understand if your too busy with your ROMS, I dont mind taking on the load, as long as I have your support, and can ask for help. i will not cross the line and ask for the RUU's you've been getting damage, but I would love to hear your plans for future releases, whether or not you might be interested in using my app and perhaps help developing it.

a quick search in damages.thread (which i hate doing, his threads fill so fast.and questions get buried, right along with the answer) gave me the same conclusion. but the fact is, i want a constant trackball led, and im sure if people had the option, more people would want it too. most view it as a minimal bug, so dont bother. i guess, for me, the other bugs are so minimal that the trackballs led has become the biggest issue.
could someone please help? i spend alot of time on here helping as much as i can, id really appreciate it if someone with the same desired goal could devote some time to it. id be willing to help in any manner.
im sitting in my basement with all the lights out posting this, just to spend time with my long lost tb led.

Trackball Alert
There's a dude from the uk that builds an app for N1 that brings the ability to choose your own color and rate of the trackball lite. Try to send him an email see if he wants to jump in. The app is called Trackball alert. Its says its only for the N1 though.
Hope you can find a solution.

yeah ive seen the app. i will make sure to do that, i hope the brits want to help.
im sure us on xda.could find a solution, however.
i really hope sprint doesnt plan on releasing 2.1 like this. id be sorely disappointed.
Believe me, I understand what it's like to have a feature that's important to me and nobody else seems to care about. We all paid good money for these phones, and continue to pay good money every month for service, so I think that gives us each the right to at least ask about the things that we care about. (Well, unless you're trying to use Sprint VVM instead of GV. That's just plain dumb.....)
As far as the trackball light behavior goes, I think your probably screwed. That's something that will most likely have to be changed in the source code of whatever is controlling it. That seems to me like something that's probably coded in at a very low level of the OS itself. (Well, not the OS, actually. The OS is Linux. But it's probably hardcoded into the Android framework.)
As good a job as the rom devs on xda do, it's not like they're actually creating this software. They're just taking what others have created and packaging it in a way that works on our phones. My guess is that the people who can make the change you're asking for work in HTC's offices...
As far as the different colors, good luck. There's a reason that tweak only works on the N1. It's the only phone that has different colored LEDs back there to light up. You can be the best programmer in the world, but you still can't turn on a red light if the only light available is white......

That could be, too. Will be cool if it is. I'm still working on getting a full understanding of the Android framework, but that could be in an xml file now that I think about it.
That said, I stand by my point that these guys aren't exactly writing software from scratch. There comes a point where they can only do so much with the programs that they're repackaging.
Once that point is reached, it's really not fair or realistic to ask them to do much more until the real developers release new software and it gets leaked again.

i comletely understand what you mean, and whole heartidly agree. damage is getting these leaks from someone and simply modifying for beytter performance, and working out the bugs sprint hasnt quite got ironed out yet.
but!
originally, these 2.1 roms were based on the eris and legend leaks, meaning the devs have a sound understanding of taking the given software and rewriting it to work on the sprint network/our hardware
it can be done, a simple edit of an xml file, and if we team up, i see no reason it couldnt be done, and rather easily at that.
i dp regret i have no knowledge in this regard, but i know its a patch alot of peoe would jump on and definatly appreciate. damage and all the rest are artists, maybe its time we give baxk, ya know? i wish i could be more of a help, but for.now, all i can do it bring the devs together in hopes to make a speedy and stable patch.

I think that there are conflicts within there. most of those files are self explanitory, but what are the gralloc.default.so and gralloc.msm7k.so libs? IIRC the droid guys had keyboard issues and those files were included in the fix, so its possible they affect the lighting in some way. I don't think we can pull those files though, it didn't seem to want to boot after that. I think gralloc also has to do with opengl.

Don't take this the wrong way, but creating a website for the Thunderbolt right now is like showing up late to a party with a 12 pack of Bud Light. Everyone will be happy you came, but you didn't bring anything that wasn't already there. Now, if you show up with a bottle of Single Barrel Jack Daniel's, you will be the shiznit at the party. To be honest, I love this idea. It's kind of hard to find updated roms and mods for any phone, not to mention the Thunderbolt. BeardedMan... Why is making a website like this, which will (hopefully) be a good hub for Thunderbolt mods and roms, getting "late to the party?" Is there another website out there like this, besides the android forms or Rom Manager? If there is, I'd like to know.
frankzua77, I would like to say thank you. If this website becomes what I think it will, it will make modding the Thunderbolt so much easier. If you need any help, just let me know.
I think the problem beardedman is referencing is the fact that there are a lot of android websites/forums already (even thunderbolt specific) and that there are a lot of much newer phones getting the attention. I have yet to not find anything I'm looking for without a 10 second search on Google. And the Thunderbolt is real close to being yesterday's superphone, if it's not already.
Plus, the problem with any of these sites is someone has to maintain it...which means sifting through posts, updating daily, etc. Unless it's a wiki that anyone can update, it's the same reason that the stickies all get outdated. Heck, it's the same reason I've started threads on many forums for many topics trying to compile information and eventually given up.
Now that I've rained on the parade and come off as a prick, I do applaud the effort...even if it doesn't stay updated or become the hub you imagine, at least you have an idea and a passion and are trying to do something about it. Don't lose that. And who knows...maybe it's just what the community needs

Job interview Qs - need advice

Can all developers please share some information regarding job interviews?
I would like to know how to improve myself in a interview for development and how to improve my answers in order to make myself more appealing.
Here are some questions that i've been asked and would like to know how to improve the answers too:
1) When you need help with coding, what do you do? - what sites do you use? - How do you approach a solution?
2) When do you approach you senior developer?
3) How do you keep up to date ?
4) Give me an example of when you solved a difficult problem using PHP (or whataever language)
Basically many examples need to be given, not sure how to answer them.
There are other questions that I'll ask when they come to mind.
I need some input guys!! or at least guide me in the right direction please

If I do go for a site, I first use Google and anything relevant to what I'm already trying to do to solve the problem. If Google doesn't help, or the answers are too vague and I need something more specific then there's no better help out there than StackOverflow. If you don't know it, get to know it
Also, see the next question.

In the above scenario, after you've tried for yourself for a while at least. A senior dev will get narked if you keep hassling them without at least trying to help yourself!

Learn to prioritise. There's nothing really more to say about that as it's a personal experience thing. Make sure you keep notes of every task you need to do and mark it done when it's done, no matter how trivial it seems. You get better at it the more you do it.

This is obviously a very personal question that no-one can answer for you. I'm not gonna tell you about any projects I've worked on and had to deal with problems because there's no point. If you give it as an example they'll only ask you to expand on it and you won't be able to. Besides, it's all well and good trying to impress, but don't out-and-out lie at an interview. Basically, they just want to know that you *can* solve problems. Tell them something where you learnt something that you were able to use again - it shows a willingness to learn, the ability to understand there are things you need to learn, and that you can grow from such a situation.
Other than that, be confident and remember that they've got you in for an interview because they're already interested. Also, it's not a 1-way street. They might be arseholes that you'd never work for. The interview is as much for you as it is for them.
Not sure if any of that has been any help, but they're my honest answers anyway.
Good luck, and let us know how you get on

Other than that, be confident and remember that they've got you in for an interview because they're already interested. Also, it's not a 1-way street. They might be arseholes that you'd never work for. The interview is as much for you as it is for them.
Not sure if any of that has been any help, but they're my honest answers anyway.
Good luck, and let us know how you get on

Thanks a lot for your answer It DOES help! :good:
I will try to learn these pointer so that they are second nature. I need to boost my confidence too it's just that I try not to be arrogant and it actually become a downhill after that.
I need to improve my answers and don't know where to ask!

The question was more regarding, how do you keep up to date with software/tech basically. For example Wordpress has been updated. How did you know about it etc.
There is a new CMS system, how do you find out about it? etc.

In that case, tech blogs with RSS feeds. I use iGoogle as my home page both at home and at work and it has different feeds on there for different bits of tech (web development, windows development, mobile development etc..)
Also, I think confidence is best when it's natural. If you've not got it yet then just keep getting better at what you're doing and you'll eventually get it. I've been doing it a long time now so only get a slight flutter of nerves at interviews. It's normally just a case of answering questions honestly and asking a couple of good ones back and I get the job. There's a lot of people out there doing development work, but not that many that have stuck it out and got actually good at it. Stick at it and you'll become a valuable commodity!

Thanks, what sort of feeds are you subscribed too?
I think I need to do something like this. Also, is it productive for developers to be on G+? Is there a benefit?
You know the answer to the question about solving a problem was to go to the original source, like wordpress has their own codex/reference site. Php has theirs, jQuery and all that. I use those site but didn't even consider stating it in the interview.

I plan to stick at it, since its putting food in my plate but I need to get better since like yesterday! Its been my life since January, really focusing on it but now trying to get a balance in my life back again.
Do you have any advice or pointers that you'd like to share from your experience please?
Thanks for your time Archer
Here's a list of the feeds I have on the "development" tab of my home page...
MSDN .Net Blog
Android Developers Blog
Visual C# News
Windows Phone Developers Blog
jQuery Blog
Just have a search for blogs that are relevant to your interests and most of them will either work as an RSS feed direct, or will have an RSS or Atom link, both of which are perfect for iGoogle (or other RSS readers).
I do use G+, but not in a professional capacity at all. To be honest though, I don't use any social networks for anything professional. I probably would if I had my own business and needed to market myself, but I don't so it's just not relevant.
As for pointers, the only thing I can really say is that when someone presents you with a challenge, look at it as an opportunity to enhance your knowledge and skill-set. I've seen many programmers respond with "Yeah, you can't do it like that. We'll do it like this instead." That's bull. There's virtually nothing you can't make your computer or website do, with just some imagination and perseverance. And it goes without saying, the more you enjoy it the better you're likely to be at it.
So what field are you going into? You said you've been doing it since January, but I expect you've been doing it a lot longer than that. Is this your first time developing as a career?

Do you know what news just made it out Yesterday!! LOL
iGoogle will be removed ! in about 14 months I think...how bad is that, just when I was about to sign up and set myself up ahhhh :silly:
I use to use it but not for productive reasons.
Will need to hook myself up in some other way now.

I know - I saw it this morning when I opened my browser and immediately thought about this thread lol.
I'm gutted as it's the perfect home page for my needs. All their advice about getting weather widgets and looking on the Play Store for replacements has got nothing to do with having an RSS reader home page.
Thanks for the extra links - I'll have a look through them.

Popular Ideas for Development

EDITED per Admin's suggestions:
Hey xda,
I wanted to make a thread for people who are not as developer-savvy as others to share ideas and make requests for mods/roms/etc.
If a request or idea could generate enough feedback or support, developers would be more informed on what people would want or like to see.
Here are two things that I would personally like to see on my Nexus 4.
On your homescreen, when you press and hold the home button to go to Google Now, is it possible to add shortcuts and or folders to the extra space around the ring? This would allow the user to clean up some screen space by hiding frequent shortcuts.
Also, I would like to see app-specific security (pattern, pin, password) protection. This would allow a user to easily unlock their phone but still have the security they would want for their messaging, facebook, etc.
Thanks for reading.
I'll maintain this thread as best I can and put the best suggestions below.
Best Ideas as of January 02, 2013
Ideas will be added to this list as support is generated.
Ideas will be removed from this list as they are developed or "worked-around."
See the post number for more details.
App-specific security (pattern, pin, password) protection. OP, #1
Simultaneously video recording with both cameras. DonDizzurp, #21
Full calculator as a lock screen widget. AlwaysDroid, #23
5 PNGs as your WiFi/Signal bars. kcls, #32
Multiwindow support. DforDesign, #41
i can add the shrotcuts already in aokp. i think. gimme a sec and ill find out.
edit: yeppers. i guess this is what you are talking about. i dont use them. but i might now that you have talked about cleaning up the home screen.

i have used it for a year now. first on att gs2 and now on nexus. in my opinion... it is the supreme rom.
I don't think that XDA is here to have users make requests?

Wonderful. I'm going to get AOKP this week then. Is this exclusively on AOKP? I haven't seen it elsewhere.

rom control should be built into most every rom. the features they stick in rom control are different though. i would imagine they all have the navbar deal. its best to flash a rom. find its features and then wipe and add a new rom. and keep going until you find the one you like best. after you find the right one... spend the hours it takes to set up your phone the way you want. for instance.. all of this talkin has caused me to want to throw cyanogen on here to see what those guys have been up to.

XDA is a development site not a site for users to come beg with requests. If you have any doubt or are unsure of what xda is please click the link below and look at zelendel's post. Hopefully a mod locks this thread.

There's a big difference between posting direct requests in the development forums and posting a thread in the general forum for collecting ideas you think might be cool to have developed one day. There's nothing wrong with this thread and it's not bothering anybody. It's certainly more useful than the hundreds of threads that occur at every device launch complaining about one hardware defect or another. As an amateur developer I think threads like this are cool places to look for ideas that might be fun to tackle.

second
except for the am dev part. i dunno devving.
So i was browsing the thread and i came across this, and from the title alone i was ready to shut it down......
But i as i read in to it i had to change my mind. The OP is not blatantly making a request to any specific dev. They are simply stating things they would like to see. Now i know this isnt a place to make you phone look cool and i am obviously aware of the rules. But bedoig brings up a very valid point. Some of the amateur dev's might see this as an opportunity to dig in a little deeper. This is not in the development boards and no one is making a specific request from any of the dev's, so i see no reason to shut this down at this time.
However, since i do not normally moderate this board, then i welcome this boards mods _Arjen_, iridaki, eagleeyetom, YZ, TeeJay3800, Diamondback, AvRS, krook6023 to sidestep my decision if they feel the need to.
@oneonezerosix you may want to consider changing the title of your thread to something that sounds a little less demanding. The Dev's here might take it the wrong way (just a suggestion)

requests? no (although ive made my share of requests)
suggestions? sure, to an extent
XDA is here FOR the developers not for the average consumer to pressure devs.
as most xda OG's would say: if you want it done, do it yourself...
if you cant.. then try to learn and get the ball rolling and a dev will probably help you along the way.

After reading the post, I can understand your perspective. All that I ask is that you attempt to understand mine as well.
Zelendel stated that, "XDA is a place to come to learn and share your knowledge."
As an amateur developer, I do not know how to develop much of the things that I wish to be able to use. It was my sole intention to facilitate a discussion of new ideas for development from varying levels of skilled members. Even the best developers can dream of new mods/roms/kernels/etc that they may be unable to produce by their own means. Which is reason enough for one to want to request the assistance of others by posting in a thread like this.
If you do not see any value in this thread, then I apologize for wasting your time.
I am not a Dev and get offended for them when someone says "please add this".
But this is a recollection of ideas, honestly, what's wrong in that? Where would the devs be with no ideas?

I agree. This is an "ideas" thread, not targeted at a specific developer. A dev may take this on board and incorporate it, as they might think its a good idea
Fun fact: three marks have posted in this thread hi
OK, back on topic. Who's got ideas?

[Q] Blinkfeed... I want it to cache/display more pages... lol

So, new user here... I registered because I couldn't find a single thing on the net about this.
I actually like Blinkfeed. A lot. I want it to display more pages. Anyone figure out how this can be done?
No, I'm not trolling... and there has to be a few other people wondering the same thing.
Thanks for any help!
What do you mean?

I guess what he means is for the blinkfeed to display more articles; without reaching the end and then refreshing to see the next bunch if articles.

Yes. Blinkfeed shows several articles per screen. It would be nice if I could determine how many pages long the actual feed was, or if I could select how long to keep articles before they're eliminated from the feed. I have a 64gb M7, so keeping a larger cache isn't a concern...
You can select the last article, view it, then swipe left or right to see more articles, but that's the only way to access articles that have already been purged from the feed.
Any bored developers or thrill seekers willing to snoop around to see if they can give it a go? lol I'm not expecting much... it could be hard coded or it might be on some config file or something easy. I'd have no idea how to go about that. I know most people seem to hate it, but I think it's better than what Flipboard has turned into, an overcomplicated mess. Plus I think it 'feels' better.
My last phone, surprisingly, was a Galaxy Nexus... I loved that until it broke, then got the HTC One and I'm in love. Blinkfeed, Sense UI... almost everything about the M7 is pure perfection to me. I have rooted it, but haven't felt a great need to install a new kernel or anything... surprisingly, getting more out of Blinkfeed is my main desire. I know Blinkfeed gets an update with many improvements I'd love to have, but being on AT&T, I have no idea when that will actually manifest.
Still hoping some bored and clever developer can look into this.
I'll paypal $50 gratuity to any long-standing / trustable senior member who can provide a viable workaround or solution to this... And I mean an genuine workaround or modification for a rooted device, not a lousy shortcut to get a quick $50.
