Rooting Captivate that has Cognition 2.2? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to get root(superuser) access on my captivate which already has Cognition 2.2. I was trying to update Cognition Rom to the latest beta and having issues because the captivate would not restart in clockwork recovery even when rom manager would tell it too.
I thought by unrooting it using one click root it would work so I did that and now I cant root it back to try the update of the ROM again (I know dumb).
Now its 2.2 and I dunno how to get root access.

Install using an Odin installer.

will that give root access and install cognition 2.2 latest beta? I've never used the Odin installer.

Yes. It's like clockwork, but on your computer.

I don't know if you've already tried this or if it will help at all but I was having somewhat similar problems on my phone running stock 2.1 update 1 but after I ran "fix permissions" in ROM Manager it worked. Hope that helps.

[Q] Rooting Problem on Samsung Captivate Android 2.2 I987UCJI6 with Recovery <3e>
Hi ALL,
Here's the problem I have been having. I just bought and Samsung Captivate that had android 2.1 I987UCJH7 which I was able to root with no problem with OCLF App from the market. After upgrading to android 2.2 I987UCJI6 I tried it again and it would not work. I looked at app and it says it only works on Recovery <2e> for android 2.1 & 2.2. This made me curious so I looked at my recovery and it updated to Recovery <3e>. So I looked around and tried a couple of the different root updates that are on different threads on this site and non of them work. So question is, What is the right way to root android 2.2 I987UCJI6 with Recovery <3e> on it? If you can provide me with the correct download files and instructions that would be great! Please and Thank You!
Thanks I.I.
You can't. You need 2e recovery as far as I know, or at least until the source is released. You've upgraded to a leaked ROM that doesn't have everything set up perfectly yet.
That said, you can swap out the 3e kernel for a 2e one, then root, then swap back in your stock kernel (3e).
DesignGears's wiki on Ponack explains it.
Or you can just install Cognition like the rest of with a rooted captivate ROM less work....

Ok. so it says " This .zip file has everything needed" blah blah.. where is this .zip file???
#1 I would recommend ditching the oclf (ryans). Plus that app has lost its ability to root you due to terms and conditions of the market....i used one click super root to root my cappy. Have a look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Thank you! That program worked. I had to do the Shell root first, though, otherwise it goes into that loop error. But after click the shell root button, it passed, then I clicked the root button, all good. Finally hit the allow non market apps button, and installed my first non market ap.. that app just doesnt work..
But thank you! i'm all set now.
no prob! enjoy
<3e> problem?
I flashed 2.2 ji6 no problem, also rooted no problem with super 1 click. Problem I have now is trying to flash pheonix 3.5. ROM Manager wont install from sd. It goes into downloading mode but fails to install. Is this because of the <3e> recovery? How do I fix it?
Help would be much appreciated, thanks!

[Q] How to undo froyo 2.2 upgrade

Hi everyone,
I have upgraded my Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 from Eclair 2.1 to Froyo 2.2 via Samsung Kies. I have used Ryan's Z4root to root it which was success. Everything was fine until here. When I tried to fix the lag using the update.zip, it failed saying 'file verification failed' (somthing of this sort). I chekced on different forums and found that there isn't any update.zip file to fix lag on 2.2 (am I right?).
If there is one, could someone point me in that direction. If there isn't, how can I undo 2.2 and rollback to 2.1 so that I can root it and fix the lag.
Please ask if you need any further details regarding my phone or the process I used to root and fix the lag.
Thanks in advance.
Superoneclick worked for me on 2.2 and 2.2.1 if you just need to root the phone.

Thanks for your reply but I have already rooted my 2.2. What I am looking is for a lag fix solution on my 2.2 or rolling back to 2.1 where there are loads of easy lag fix solutions.
head over to the android dev subforum, look for any of the lagfix kernels.
Alternatively use cf-root which will allow you to use 2e recovery and thereby apply your update.zip
Do you know which 2.2 firmware you flashed? Was it jk3 or jk4? This sounds like a recovery version issue and not all solutions support every version of firmware.
Ryan's Z4root to root
+ Ryans OCLF for lag fix works for me .
jje
Any lagfix that can be installed as an app should be ok. You'll still be prevented from applying anything via the update.zip method until you resolve the recovery "issue".

My current 2.2 firmware is JP3. This is what is showing after I updated to 2.2 via Kies.

Yes!!!
Ryan's Root and OCLF worked for me aswell.
Rooting worked fine on the first go but lag fix resulted in a black screen on my galaxy. As I had an external SD card in my phone, I removed it out and ran the lag fix again. It worked this time!!!

[Q] Help with rooted N1 wont take OTA 2.2.1 update

Hey everyone,
I rooted my nexus one when it was 2.2, now im trying to update to 2.2.1. However the OTA update wasnt taking, it failed and the installation aborted everytime. I search forums and found one saying to factory reset my phone, which i did. Saved everything with titanium backup. Now im stuck with:
Firmware: 2.1-update1
Kernal version:2.6.29-01117-g4bc62c2 android-build apa26#1
Build nuumber: EPE76
One problem is i do not get an OTA update to upgrade to 2.2 or 2.2.1. Also i did a manual update with signed-passion-FRF50-from-ERE27.1e519a24.zip and it fails and installation aborts. How can i get back to at least 2.2, but preferably 2.2.1.
Also when trying to restore my apps from titanium backup, it tells me my phone is not rooted, but I still see the little "padlock" unlocked when i boot my phone.
Thanks, hope someone can help
John
What recovery are you using?
fastboot, then recovery, used a zip i downloaded from another forum that gave me build epe76. just renamed it to undate.zip and let the phone do the work.
What recovery are you using? Stock? Clockworkmod? Amon_RA?
i guess just stock, all i do is fastboot the phone and hit recovery
Have you tried ROM Manager?
yes but i am getting an error that my phone is not rooted. Although it is, the padlock is open when i boot the phone. If I root it again will i be able to install 2.2?

There you go.
Unlocking the phone is one thing. Rooting is another. You need to root it over again, but it should be easier this time since you do not need to unlock your bootloader.
ok i will try but before i do should i upgrade to 2.2 or 2.2.1 first then root it again? Because that was my problem originally, i rooted it when it was 2.2 and could not get do the OTA update to 2.2.1 to work the installation aborted with an error every time.
No, root the phone first. Then you can put whatever the hell ROM you want.
It's like putting your pants on first, then your shoes.
Yeah root first cuz most of the custom rom already jumps to 2.2.1

Rooted stock 2.2 from ATT but can't load new Cog. ROM

I upgraded my captivate through att with official froyo on the 24th. I have just used superoneclick 1.65 to root my phone and give me the super user access app. I have deleted the stock bloatware apps from att and am now happy. I can't seem to figure how to get tethering unlocked. I have tried to use ROM Manager and clockmod recovery to load up cognition 4.0 but every time I go into boot up from recovery screen I get the signature verification failure. I already tried the update.zip deal as well. I am running kernel 2.6.32.9 build froyo.uckb1. All I want is the easiest and most direct way to get tethering on my phone and if needed put a new rom like cognition on here. Thank you so much for the help.

A search would have brought you to the fact that you need to fix the recovery so it will accept unsighned zip files. This has been brought up dozens of times in the past 48 hours. I just did the search and look what I found HERE

[Q] sideload apps for official gingerbread?

Hi all,
I have a notification from AT&T that I can now update my Froyo Captivate to Gingerbread.
I am currently rooted (Even if rooted, I am not using any custom roms.. and I don't seem to need any.. I am happy with what has come with Cappy. I rooted it just to sideload the apps as it comes disabled in Froyo by default)
My question is: If I use the Kies and update my Cappy to gingerbread, will I be able to sideload the apps as I do it now?
As I am rooted, will it create any problem updating it to gingerbread using Kies?
I just updated to gingerbread yesterday using kies mini, and after I did the "Allow Installation from non-Market Sources" was visible. I think thats all you need for sideloading. You will lose the Root, but like you said you don't need it.
I'm not sure if beeing rooted will affect kies, I was on a custom rom so I used a oneclick back to stock and then kies
thanks t-roth for the response. How is your experience with new stock GB?
Does anyone knows if I am rooted, I can directly go to the Stock Captivate GB using the Kies Mini

If your rooted phone can connect to Kies, you can install the update.
Thanks Bruce. I will try that out..
Probably the last question. Am I going to see huge performance change moving from Froyo to GB?
I was rooted and Kies had no issue with my phone being so. It left me root-less after the fact, and I felt naked. The number one reason you SHOULD want to be rooted is to get rid of the freaking still-born garbage AT&T thinks we should endorse and like. As far as actual side-loading...I was unable to get the Sideload Wonder Machine to work. But I didn't sweat it because I quickly sought Root. Some of the more powerful utilities require root, but for the casual user, you probably won't want to be messing about in system folders anyway.
You say you "quickly sought root", but did you find it. I tried the 2.3.5 upgrade and as noted it left me able to load non-market apps ok but I was root-less. I haven't been able to root the KK4 upgrade and since I live and die with my Root Explorer and TI Backup I NEED the root. Z4 Root wouldn't work and neither would any of the 3 versions of Super 1-Click that I have (1.6.5, 2.1.1 & 2.3.1). If you were successful, what did you use?
I think it depends on how you enabled the side loading of apps. I'm not on the official gingerbread but that's what I think.
