Rooted stock 2.2 from ATT but can't load new Cog. ROM - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I upgraded my captivate through att with official froyo on the 24th. I have just used superoneclick 1.65 to root my phone and give me the super user access app. I have deleted the stock bloatware apps from att and am now happy. I can't seem to figure how to get tethering unlocked. I have tried to use ROM Manager and clockmod recovery to load up cognition 4.0 but every time I go into boot up from recovery screen I get the signature verification failure. I already tried the update.zip deal as well. I am running kernel 2.6.32.9 build froyo.uckb1. All I want is the easiest and most direct way to get tethering on my phone and if needed put a new rom like cognition on here. Thank you so much for the help.

A search would have brought you to the fact that you need to fix the recovery so it will accept unsighned zip files. This has been brought up dozens of times in the past 48 hours. I just did the search and look what I found HERE

Rooting Captivate that has Cognition 2.2?

I'm trying to get root(superuser) access on my captivate which already has Cognition 2.2. I was trying to update Cognition Rom to the latest beta and having issues because the captivate would not restart in clockwork recovery even when rom manager would tell it too.
I thought by unrooting it using one click root it would work so I did that and now I cant root it back to try the update of the ROM again (I know dumb).
Now its 2.2 and I dunno how to get root access.
Install using an Odin installer.
will that give root access and install cognition 2.2 latest beta? I've never used the Odin installer.
Yes. It's like clockwork, but on your computer.

I don't know if you've already tried this or if it will help at all but I was having somewhat similar problems on my phone running stock 2.1 update 1 but after I ran "fix permissions" in ROM Manager it worked. Hope that helps.

[Q] Please Help neewby

ok, so i downloaded a stock froyo Rom i897ucji6-ocd-rev02 low, and the son of a gun works perfectly. Problem, i want to flash a custom rom from cognition but the instructions say to flash back to your stock rom which for me would be 2.1.1 becasue i have a samsung captivate from att, i cannot get back to 2.1.1, tried using odin master clear nothing changed, could the reason i cannot get back to 2.1.1 is because i deleted the att bloatware? and is there a download that will bring my phone back to 2.1.1? if not i can live with the froyo 2.2 stock. and one more thing Please can some all knowing developer create a program (app) to allow the att captivate (god love em) download after market apps.

Master clear does not bring you back to stock. You are using the wrong aspect of the odin program

[Q] Help! Trying to Unlock, updated to Froyo but cant update kernel using RomManager

Hi, I am extremely new to the Android scene, been using an Iphone and got the Captivate when it came out.
Now I am in india and trying to unlock the phone for use on Vodafone.
** I successfully installed the 2.2 update.
** Tried to install the root update.zip but in recovery mode couldnt select the right option so needed to redo the 2.2 update.
** Searched and found that the 2.2 is for regular galaxy S with hard buttons and we need to update the kernel with some of the fixes for captivate which I found on this forum. The v1.3 file with Voodoo and bln and lagfix is one without odin file, so again searched and found that I can install that file using Rom Manager.
** Downloaded the Rom Manager and updated it to the latest version app and tried to Install ROM from SD Card, I selected this zip file i got from one of the threads on this site for v1.3 fixes. But the problem is that the app doesnt do anything it is suppose. I read it should reboot and install this rom but it just took me back to the list of files to select rom and didnt do anything.
What am I doing wrong.
I would really appreciate if someone could help me. I spent the last 5 hrs trying to figure this out
Thanks a ton in advance.

Best bet in my opinion is to go back to stock 2.1 and unlock that

Quite possibly
I thought I will upgrade the phone first, apply the fixes for the kernel and once I have rooted the phone, I could unlock it.
Is that process flow not possible. Do I have to unlock first, then update and then root.
The problem still remains, when I successfully upgraded to the official 2.2 version(again found it from a search: http://www.techlivez.com/2010/07/how-to-upgrade-galaxy-s-to-android-2-2-tutorial/)
I cant goto restore menu and select anything. So after searching for a solution I found that all I need to do is put in a new kernel using ROM Manager and which is what I tried.
But ROM Manager didnt do what it said it would.

I will have to double check since the phone is not with me right now to see what version I am running, but I have upgraded from the link I provided above.

I understand rooting and unlock are 2 different things, just like how jailbreak and unlock on the iphone were, but I thought I could follow: Upgrade to 2.2->Update Kernel->Unlock procedure.
Best bet in my opinion is to go back to stock 2.1 and unlock that

I can try that as well, so you are saying once I unlock on 2.1 and root it, upgrade to 2.2 would automatically make the phone unlocked and rooted? or would I have to repeat any of the 2 steps again.
Thanks for your patience.
Once on stock you will be able to save the fikes that hold the unlock code.
If you go back to 2.2 you will have to paste those fikes back where they belong.
The second link posted in my first post list the steps.

[Q] Flashed Firefly & CM7 a couple of times, but now I can't root my Captivate

Hi all,
over the last couple of weeks I've been experimenting with Firefly 3.0 on my Rogers I896 Samsung Captivate. Then I put CM7 on the phone, but decided I liked Firefly better so I tried to switch back. Trouble is, it looks like I did something wrong because now I can no longer root my phone. I have searched a lot on line, and tried several root methods including z4root (which is what I was using during the Firefly installs - worked great) and SuperOneClick - no joy. Z4root runs for a few seconds, and finally just returns to the home screen rather than re-booting; and SuperOneClick goes through a lot of commands and finally hangs with the message "waiting for phone" (or something close to that).
I've used Odin 1.81 to flash back to the stock Rogers 2.1 image, then to 2.2. (I used the images from here.) When I dial *#1234# I get CSC="unknown" and when I dial *2767*4387264636# I get PCode = "SGH-I896ZKAATT" but I think this is wrong, I think it should display "SGH-I896ZKARWC". I tried the fix documented here and following this procedure I can get the CSC code to read "I896rwcjl1". But I can't load a custom ROM because none of the root tools will root the device.
One other problem I ran into - don't know if it's related, but I think it is - if I try to set up the stock e-mail client to use our Exchange server, it is not able to connect to the mail server even though I know FOR SURE the credentials are correct. (The same setup works like a champ on other Android phones.) I think that the firmware is sending some phone-related info to a Samsung server to validate the license for the Exchange client software, and this is actually the part that is failing rather than the connection to the mail server.
Can anyone provide some direction to a long-suffering Android noob who just wants his Firefly (and exchange e-mail) back?
Thanks in advance
Just go into download mode, Odin/Heimdall a CWM-based kernel onto the phone, then don't even bother with standard rooting procedures; just reboot to CWM recovery, flash a custom ROM and go.
Flashing to stock is largely unnecessary for this.

NOT true coming from an aosp rom you HAVE to flash back to stock with either a one click or use a .pit with the firmware .tar. cm7 and miui use a completely different partitioning table if you try to flash a tw rom over them it will not work.
but yes you are right about just flashing a kernel with odin/heimdall that has cwm baked in. no need to root before you flash a rom.

I thought he meant oneclicking back to full stock (2.1 or 2.2), which is unnecessary due to bootloader rubbish. 3File to GB is pretty much the only way to go.
Thanks! 2 more follow-up questions
Thanks all for your helpful feedback. Two more questions:
what ROM(s) would you recommend that has CWM built-in?
I'm assuming once this ROM was loaded, I could replace it witl Firefly fairly easily?
Thanks again

a ROM doesnt have CWM built in....a kernel does
READ, READ, then READ some more
please read the new user guide (below in sig)find out what stickies are and find said stickies.
also if needing rogers stock roms (one clicks and non one clicks with pit....) also look in my sig.
they call me mr. rogers.
Thanks for the clarification. I installed CM7 using the guide on their wiki page and everything works.

[Q] sideload apps for official gingerbread?

Hi all,
I have a notification from AT&T that I can now update my Froyo Captivate to Gingerbread.
I am currently rooted (Even if rooted, I am not using any custom roms.. and I don't seem to need any.. I am happy with what has come with Cappy. I rooted it just to sideload the apps as it comes disabled in Froyo by default)
My question is: If I use the Kies and update my Cappy to gingerbread, will I be able to sideload the apps as I do it now?
As I am rooted, will it create any problem updating it to gingerbread using Kies?
I just updated to gingerbread yesterday using kies mini, and after I did the "Allow Installation from non-Market Sources" was visible. I think thats all you need for sideloading. You will lose the Root, but like you said you don't need it.
I'm not sure if beeing rooted will affect kies, I was on a custom rom so I used a oneclick back to stock and then kies
thanks t-roth for the response. How is your experience with new stock GB?
Does anyone knows if I am rooted, I can directly go to the Stock Captivate GB using the Kies Mini

If your rooted phone can connect to Kies, you can install the update.
Thanks Bruce. I will try that out..
Probably the last question. Am I going to see huge performance change moving from Froyo to GB?
I was rooted and Kies had no issue with my phone being so. It left me root-less after the fact, and I felt naked. The number one reason you SHOULD want to be rooted is to get rid of the freaking still-born garbage AT&T thinks we should endorse and like. As far as actual side-loading...I was unable to get the Sideload Wonder Machine to work. But I didn't sweat it because I quickly sought Root. Some of the more powerful utilities require root, but for the casual user, you probably won't want to be messing about in system folders anyway.
You say you "quickly sought root", but did you find it. I tried the 2.3.5 upgrade and as noted it left me able to load non-market apps ok but I was root-less. I haven't been able to root the KK4 upgrade and since I live and die with my Root Explorer and TI Backup I NEED the root. Z4 Root wouldn't work and neither would any of the 3 versions of Super 1-Click that I have (1.6.5, 2.1.1 & 2.3.1). If you were successful, what did you use?
I think it depends on how you enabled the side loading of apps. I'm not on the official gingerbread but that's what I think.

use the newest version of super 1 click root.. duh.
or look up the fugu mod root method. odin flash fugu root kernel, let it bootloop once, then odin flash your stock kernel again... or a cwm based kernel for your android version (kk4)
