[Q] z4root? - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just noticed the app z4root in the Market. It claims one-click rooting and unrooting of various devices, among them the Galaxy S. Search of the Galaxy Tab boards didn't turn up anything. Is this safe and recommended for the Tab?

Used it myself and it went smoothly. Far smoother than previous rooting methods I had to use on other devices.

Thanks, I was too timid to try it without someone confirming it first.
I can now also confirm that it works fine. Went very smoothly, took about 1 minute and a reboot.

It seems like such an odd way to root for me. My first experience of rooting was a HTC Legend. I had to downgrade the software (one complete wipe and flashing of firmware) and then flash a rooted update. And I still don't have proper write access to the /system partition. It took about half an hour to root the Legend, this took 2 minutes, and I didn't loose any data. Awesome!

Noob Question (first adroid device I've had) : So, what are the benefits of rooting the tab? Removing pre-installed samsung apps?
Ah...I found a nice article..so that's the only way I can remove the stupid Vodafone booting / shutting down image?

Can confirm, rooted the tab yesterday with this and after that run the OCLF, now the Tab works like a Charm.

My favorite advantage: Running AdFree, which very effectively blocks most ads, in the browser and also inside other apps.

from noob to noob - to be able do things that manufacturer doesnt think of - adfree, clock synch, interface mods, changing the way memory works (get rid of stacking lags).. all in all improve things that in retail are sold to you and a "new" model))
And i know for sure

- 3)dont do things until you know exactly how to undo them unless you are looking for pretexts to buy yourself a new device.

Router thanks. Good informations.
I would like to root my SGT because I need CIFS access to my network share directories, in my Windows network. I found some prgs in the Market, but they need 'root rights'. So here I am. I will use this root app.
A question for you (you seem experienced) about the correct procedure to reinstall apps already installed after a root procedure:
1. Do an AppBrain Syncronize
2. Launch Root (Z4root)
3. Install the AppBrain app again and then connect to my AppBrain account to 'restore' apps?
Is it correct my idea?

that is correct, its not like the root we do when rooting and android phone like my evo, you can actuall run the z4root the run and install that program

Well, for starters I'd like to get rid of the very annoying vodafone booting / shutting down images.
If I could also remove some pre-installed apps, that'd be nice too ^^

When you ran OCLF, what was the amount of RAM you selected, I think by default it shows somewhere around 846 odd..

[Q] General rooting questions.

Hello, i just got my first smartphone, i have AT&T and i didnt want an iphone and was more drawn toward andriod, so i got a captivate. I would really like to do alot of the things in the "Pimp my captivate" guide but i have some questions first.
1.) If i root the phone, and take off the bloatware, will i still get updates if i go to the check for updates in settings? (ex. like the gps fix and froyo update someday).
2.) Its not going to subtract any features from the phone is it ? (ex. the google syncing and everything will still work? Basically is the rooting process and or bloatware removal going to change the way the phone works besides the programs those being gone?
Ill admit i'm an andriod phone hacking noob, but i do know computers well and programming and have altered other devices in the past.

Since no updates have come down yet, I don't think anyone is sure of the answer to this. Keep in mind that it's a good idea to make backups of the app APKs on your sdcard before you remove them (just in case you want to reinstall them).

Removing AT&T's crappy apps won't affect the phone negatively at all. They simply won't be there, so you can't use them (if you find them useful). The only app that I can think of you may want to keep is the AT&T Hot Spots app so you phone can use free AT&T wifi at locations such as Starbucks.
Yes, you will still get updates as long as you do not install a custom ROM. (Rooting is ok).
The only functionality that will be removed will be that of the apps you delete
Thank you so much this clears up alot of the things I've been wondering.

Rooting issues
I have tried everything I have found online. The superuser icon is there. I have downloaded several apps that require the device to be rooted. I turned on usb debugging, and turned it off. I've downloaded update.zip several times.
I'm not entirely a noob when it comes to tweaking phones. I flashed roms on windows mobile and performed all sorts of modifications I got off this site.
I have the superuser icon. I downloaded titanium. Titanium says it installed busybox. I downloaded the separate busybox app from the market. That app has a popup saying that a nand unlock is necessary for the app to work. When I run it in spite of the popup, it says the device is rooted, but can't find busybox. A whoami command in adb will indicate that I'm not. I went though adb to reinstall busybox. But whenever I try to run any significant commands (eg su) it gives me a permission denied error. Googling permission denied gives me a myraid of possible causes, but it seems I'm getting far afield. I just want to get rid of the bloatware for now.
Is there another program to root this thing? Did I just miss something incredibly obvious?
hello, I recently just rooted this beast, and was wondering when, why, and how often i should clear out the dalvic cache

You shouldn't ever need to unless you are installing a ROM that requires it. the Dalvik Cache is the Java VM that Android Runs on and it does a very good job of keeping itself cleared. It does lots of Garbage collection on its own.
gotcha! thank you

[Q] Root through "Samsung Apps"

This is very theoretical question
I noticed that "Samsung Apps" has the ability to install application to /system/app
can we trick it somehow to install Superuser?
maybe by editing hosts file in the computer and connecting ad-hoc to the phone?

Not really sure how this type of root would be easier than the current root methods... The apps are probably signed, too?
Maybe there is a better way to fool this app where to download updates from
it was just an example.
it could be "universal root tool" for all i9000 devices
without the need to flash two kernels (in froyo anyway)
I really don't know if it's even possible, just a thought I had

i might be possible but definitely a lot of hard work. there is already a simpler root-version for 2.2 by chainfire here which requires just a single kernel flash with odin and i see no reason why this could not also be achieved from a update.zip equipped with redbend_ua ...
I do realize that there are currently root options
chainfire's root procedure is good, but you have to make "special" kernel for every rom version and currently it doesn't support most roms.
this may take more time, but it's universal for all roms, maybe you can do it without even use a computer at all.
anyway, it was just a thought that crossed my mind when I updated my task manager
thought it could be a good idea (maybe simple like getting into a website to jailbreak iphone) but maybe it's not such a good idea (I really don't know how much effort it would take)

[Q] New Roots...

So I rooted my Froyo Captivate today, I've never rooted a smartphone before, and I'm loving it. I got rid of all the AT&T garbage and to my surprise my phone actually seems somewhat snappier. I'm looking forward to using tethering and side-loading apps, but I have a newbie question about root access on the phone. Normally under Windows and Linux a user would not want to stay rooted all the time. Is that different on Android? Is it ok to just stay rooted all day long? So far what I've done is use Super One Click to root, installed Titanium Backup, removed the crap from AT&T, then unrooted the phone. Everything seems to be working beautifully except that Ti needs root.
How does everyone else handle this? Just root when you need to use Ti or some other app? I also deactivated the Market filter AT&T put on, so does that stick when not in root?
Thanks for the feedback.
You can stay rooted. Anything that needs root permissions will ask for it when it needs it.
The differance being that you don't have to open up a terminal and type su blah blah. You just hit ok when asked. OR NOT

leave root access there. it doesnt mean you are running everything as root

[Q] Color Nook 1.2 root

Anyone gotten the new ROM yet? I followed the instructions over at the this thread and it doesn't look like it worked.
The instruction that states "Once you are back up, you can use the browser to download and run .APK files from anywhere."..
When I go to the browser and try to select "Zeam-2.9.2.apk" or "Superuser.apk" which are mentioned in the post, I get an 'Unsupported file format'.
Sounds like something didn't work right, but I'm not sure what that is.. anyone here seen that problem?
I tried to post this in that thread, but didn't have access to it....
You can install without unrooting on 1.1 version only. 1.0 and 1.01 need to be unrooted. Once the update is installed, you can use this hack (hamncheese's) to kinda root the new stock froyo version, but it is not a real rooting. As of 4:45pm pst no one has gotten a working root for the new 1.2 version. Give it a couple of days and they will have a method to totally root the nook on the new version. Or, you can run dual boot and be happy for the time being until they get the new root patch.
......
I probably should have been clearer.. my bad.. I did try hamncheese's kinda root, but it didn't look like it worked.

You and me both.......... LOL I d give it a couple of days maybe tomorrow they will have the root patch figured out... Tell you wife it has been only 24 hours......... XDA Devs are fast but sheesh....... they need a little time......
I was unable to do this. It attempted to install, then rebooted, then attempted installation, then rebooted... I unrooted, did a full restore and allowed the update. Not so impressed to be honest with the stock Froyo. Seriously considering going back to rooted 1.1.
Read the thread, it sure does not work hope someone comes up with an answer. Thanks
Just got my Nook and had it updated in the store. The guy says, "it should have lots of other apps plus Angry Birds".
Well, it is 1.2, but no apps and no Angry Birds... Figures.
I too hope someone gets 1.2 Root-able soon.
I sideloaded 1.2 and in the "shop" section, you can "buy" Angry Birds. It's $2.99. Its not RIO or Seasons but it is Angry Birds so maybe you can appease the wife until a root is released. I downloaded it (bought it) and it works great! Ken
anyone know when an new auto-root might be out?

I know some say the market works but I am still having trouble with it. I cannot seem to install anything. I click the app to download and install, it "starts" the download but the progress bar doesnt fill. Then it suddenly fills, says installing, then dumps me back to the app's description page, with nothing installed. It reports that the "download unsuccessful" so I repeat the install again...no change
I am tempted to go back to 1.1 since 1.2 doesnt offer me anything new unless rooted....

Forget about running netflix unless you are willing to flash the cyanogen rom. There are settings that you simply cannot change (at this time) without switching to a different rom. I dont know what to tell you other than to follow the directions others have already posted. The problem with the cyanogen rom is that it does not put the nook to sleep properly when the screen is turned off, so the battery life drains like a leaky faucet. But, I think they have finally started to figure that out so I think that it should be added to one of the next iterations. Once it does, I will happily switch over to using that rom, especially now that the nook app allows magazines etc.
UPDATE ON FAILED INSTALLS: Turns out that only SOME applications do not install correctly, I have been able to install others from the android market place and amazon market place. Angry birds (any version) is one that will NOT install. Any tips? I have definitely used an sd card properly with no change.

That is not correct; with rooted stock 1.2 it is quite simple (especially with Root Explorer).
As for installing Angry Birds, if you are on rooted stock 1.2, try downloading it WITHOUT the SD card mounted.
interesting
Interesting, I will try to enable netflix by changing the file using this method:
http://reviewhorizon.com/2011/05/how-to-watch-netflix-on-nook-color/
I had read a post that mentioned I needed to use ES File explorer to access the file. ES File explorer didnt want to cooperate and complained about my rom, and i figured I need to be running a different rom.
As for the angry birds, I have tried installing with and without the sd card and not had any luck.

when you first install an app, it should ask you what you want to install it with. One option is "Android Package Installer" and that's the one you want. I chose the other one the first time around and ended up restoring and rechoosing. The other package installer (i think it's called nook something or other) does not allow you to select the permissions for the program, and thus, will not install the applications properly.
To test and see if that is the issue, try to install an app... if it comes up with the permissions for the app upon install, then that is probably not the issue. On the other hand, if it immediately just says failed, then you may have chosen the wrong package installer.
also,
For problems with large file install errors, such as angry birds, try installing the kernel in the this thread... that's what worked for me. Alternatively, if you want to install angry birds, etc, then you can copy the apk over to internal memory, take the sd card out, and then install it. (this kernel makes that unnecessary though)
Rooting nook is easy when using the CM7 Mod. You can get the market working with out problem and would be able to run most application and games. I had raging thunder 2 running with out problem.
The thing that I don't like on it is that, CM7's replacement of the stock softkeys (navigation buttons on the buttom) seems to be designed for mobile phones as they are small buttons.
So i unrooted my nook but would be trying this link and see what i can get:

Flash rbheomax's kernel (I believe both camera's work in V1), or pattyboi's kernel (both cameras work), and use Titanium Backup to remove the apps/bloatware. They shouldn't come back after that but if they do, you can always go into Play Store > Settings > Auto-update Apps and set it to Do not auto-update apps and they will quit re-installing. If you're using Flashify to flash the boot image then make sure you reboot the phone before attempting to remove the apps; if you're using TWRP to flash then you don't have to worry about that.

Has anyone else tried this kernel and can verify there are no issues? I seen HTC has a new update for my phone and wonder how that would work:
Software uptate: 1.49.652.3
This update contains important enhancements and bug fixes, including:
ALERT: Patch for critical security vulnerability ('Stagefright')
- Device Stability improvements, bug fixes
- New and or enhanced features
- Further improvements to performance
Right now, my version is 1.48.652.2
I did a backup, then installed the RUU, let their software update install to keep from getting notified about it incessantly, and then put my kernel back with the application backups.
