Where is the WiFi + 3G version for the Nook Color? - Nook Color General

Where is the 3G version for the Nook Color? I would have considered it if this were available.

Why do you want a 3g version and pay a monthly fee to go only when u can just tether it to you phoned go online
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

Yep I just use free tethering. Why would you want a contract on this device?

I don't get it either. There is so much free WiFi and the ability to tether to a phone, I don't know why people want to pay $10-30 a month just to have it built in. I guess if it was provided for free by B&N we would jump at it, but considering how "hackable" Android is, they would open themselves to HUGE data charges.

I agree - it comes with pandora and a web browser, that would be suicide. Even their shop is more data intensive. Unless they had a way to make sure there was data only in shop?

There is a Nook version like that but some inconsiderate marketing manager out there slapped a 600 dollar price to it and named it after the Korean space program

The original nook has free 3G through AT&T and does not require any contract. It's nice to be able to buy a book in areas that don't have wifi.
That being said browsing the store, buying books, and updating the firmware is about all that can be done over 3G. It can't be used for web browsing which is wifi only, so maybe that's why it's free

I'm not sure they are going to 3g units anymore. When I'm on the road, the unit updates itself and will download books. Today I downloaded a couple of free books while going down the road. Not only were the books free but bn would have to pay for 3g time. I just wonder if the economics are there to continue 3g for free.
Woody

I don't get this one at all. There are plenty of tablets with 3g connectivity, and oh by the way, they all cost 2-3 times as much.
I don't need cellular access on my ereader/tablet, and I'm more than willing to take the 350 in savings to avoid it.

Which is the best UK operator?

Hi all,
I'm due for and upgrade soon and I was wondering what you think of your operator. Prices / Customer service and support / Network coverage etc.
EDIT-My original reason for this thread is below. I took the risk of going with Orange today and got a Trinity
I'm considering a Trinity (only on Orange atm) or a Hermes (on o2, T-Mobile and Vodafone)
I prefer to look of the Trinity (bigger storage card, size, cheaper and GPS) but I view Orange as a bad point, but the Hermes has more support and roms here and is available with my current operator - o2, who I plan to bribe with 'give a free phone and a better contract, or I'll go to t-mobile or vodafone.' Anyone had any luck doing that?
reliability- vodafone
best deals - t-mobile
t-mobile wins
Do you know if any of the UK providers offer unlimited internet connection (without the stupid 'fair use' policy)? I mean, really unlimited like usual broadband?

How much are you planning on using? I find it hard to get anywhere close to the 1GB fair use "limit" on standard Web n Walk.
Unless you plan on doing a lot of streaming video, in which case you should get the Web n Walk pro which has a 10Gb ceiling, you will find it hard to download a lot on a pocket pc.
bbobeckyj, I tried the same 'bribe' but it got me nowhere. I have always been on O2, but might have to switch to Vodafone because they have much better contracts that suit my needs for my XDA Mini S. Vodafon are bringing out a new internet extra as well soon, so I'm going to wait until then.
Well guys and gals I successfully ported across to t-mobile from O2....the data charges are just scandalous on O2.
Web-n-walk and U-Fix 25....nice
HSDPA activated already according to the woman at t-mobile and i can verify it was....just watched the latest BBC News feed without a hitch!.
NICE

I was thinking of using skype a lot actually. For that, I think definitely 1 GB limit will be crossed fairly easily. But for that also need a fast connection. Will look into all this when about to get new contract near end August.
Midget1990: I didn't know that usual broadband is also capped! I have NTL and I download easily something like 20 to 40 gigs a month, which sometimes increases and sometimes decreases... So far never faced any caps, and got this connection just for that fact that it was 'really' unlimited, even if the speed was just 2 Mbps.
Just so you know, t-mobiles usage policy doesnt allow skype...you have to use the web-n-walk pro for that.

You just potentially saved me spending a lot over nothing.
Now all that's left is to find someone who does allow unlimited usage and VOIP. I think I'm living in dreamworld
I don't really want to pay loads for a contract, but it looks like the cheapest t-mobile do is about £30 . Which would you say is better out of web n walk and flext?
EDIT: Just looked at flext 20 and it looks perfect for me. (Mobile internet (t-zones, WAP or web'n'walk) charges
Browsing costs 0.73p per KB, a maximum charge of £1 per day no matter how much you browse the internet on your mobile phone.)
Please could somebody say though, where would the £1 for the internet come from, because the £34 you get to spend a month just says that you use it on calls and texts. Does it come from somewhere else? (Never been on a contract before)
Well all i can say is im using flext 25 with web-n-walk 18.....that works out at 32.50 a month..........unlimited internet (obviously fair use...but a gig is MASSIVE for a pda)
the flext thing has 60 quid of allowance, works out at (if you go half for text and half for calls)
300 texts
150 minutes (anytime,anywhere(uk) )
plus free weekend calls to ANY uk number (not including premium or 08 numbers)
Youd get much more out of the flext + web-n-walk 25, but i really wanted to pay the cheapest option. I hate it when they put a few quid in between, but boost the allowance by almost double.

Yer ive noticed that...but the free weekend calls must be worth a HELL of alot.....think thats a limited time offer aswell??
Which have you looked at then?
I was gonna go with flext 20 + web-n-walk.
I can't see when the offer ends, I can't actually start the contract now so was going to in a month or so.

WnW MAX allows skype, its basicly everything like home Broadband but with 10gb fair usage, you can go over but if you go over say 3months in a row they may contact you and ask you to reduce it, allthou 10gb for a PDA is a hell of a lot, unless you plan on using it as a modem a lot of the time 10gb should do.
if you will be using it as a modem all the time then the t-mobile usb modem might be a better option as that allows unlimtied internet - http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/personal/.../internet-on-the-move/internet-on-your-laptop
Regards
I wish that t-mobile did a cheaper flext and web-n-walk. I only really want to spend £20 a month.
Orange - best customer service, talk 7 data plans ok, do the Trinity on very good deals if you shop around
T mobile - plans excellent if you want flexibility or if you download a lot.
O2 - customerservice absolute ****, plans ok, once the best range of PDA's - now limited
Vodafone - havnt a clue
Really depends on deal your offered. Orange clinched it for me at last upgrade - 7 months free line rental and a free trinity with GPS on a 12 month contract.
One thing to note about t-mobile wnw.
They are blocking IRC/MSN etc... over GPRS, some users have reported those apps are working correctly however recently signed up customers seem to have ports blocked??
Id be interested to know if anyone can use IRC over wnw....if so what GPRS settings are you using?

Short answer - no. I've been with Genie and then O2 for many years, and the one thing that's happened in that time is handset and contracts have become more expensive. I rang up a while ago to try and get a new XDA, and they wanted to put me on a £35+ contract and I would still have to pay something for a (decent) phone.
What O2 are good at (for me at least) is giving you dirt cheap contracts. For instance I got a 1 year contract of £20 a month reduced to £10 a month, then £100 cash back for not taking a phone. So I'm paying £20 for a whole year for Online Offpeak 300 (or whatever the hell it is). Even the O2 rep suggested I just get an XDA off Ebay.

Curious buyer :D

So can I use this without a Tmobile contract, just for wifi?
Yes but you need to pay the full unlock price of $450.00 Personally, I think the hspa+(4G) is a great deal from t-mobile. Its $40 a month for unlimited use...you get text messaging and tethering and its faster than my crappy home internet DSL (att, duh)
Yes you can. But my personal experience with TMobile 4G (HSPA+) is very very positive. Of course it does not make sense to you if 4G is not covering the area you are living most of the time though.
Well the network and unlimited usage is one plus point that made me want to try it despite of so many existing bad reviews in the market place.
I bought one the other day for the full price & i will only use it with wifi & my phone's mobilehotspot so i have no need for the 4g..i just will pay for 1 month of 4g service then cancel.
thx for the replies Yea I'm going to get one and the 100mb a month plan.

I guess you use app like aNetShare which provides full Wifi infra? Or does Dell Streak 7" support Adhoc Wifi (provided with Wifi tether or similar) or Bluetooth PANs?
I'm considering also eBaying this, but dont have T-Mobile available in my country
Your going to burn through the 100 mb plan in a couple days. Just a warning. It is the latest and greatest in mobile broadband pricing scams. They give you a basically worthless amount of data for a standard fee, or unlimited for a little more basically forcing you to take the unlimited package. The limited packages need to start with gb not mb but hey, they're in the moneymaking business.

I am not sure that activating a data plan for one month is necessary. I bought direct from Dell and was not required to activate a data plan at that time. I can confirm that the S7 is fully functional even if the SIM is not activated. Just no HSPA+ data (mobile). If you do not activate a data plan, you have to pay full retail - US$450

webvan - Amazon.com has a streaming video service for movies. You can download and/or stream movies you've purchased from them. I think it's US only, though. Just watched one of my movies to test it out. Great playback, even with about 70% signal from my wifi, the movie streamed perfectly from their site.
I have not found a media player app that would buffer movies streamed from my home server properly, though.

I have a feeling they're going to screw some people over with this, myself included. Before I switched to the TB I paid for hotspot on my DX. Now that I'm on the TB it no longer shows up in my features, and I bet they will switch to tiered data before the 15th. Forcing me to change my plan to re-add tethering and go to tiered data. Pretty much defeating the whole purpose of why I bit the bullet and threw down $700 to get this phone and be on unlimited 4G before they did away with it.

It's a free promotion and it says it when you use the hotspot. They can't charge you or sign you up for something during a free promotion. When I spoke to Verizon they said it will be some kind of notification (they don't know what yet) sent out that the promotion is over. I tried to opt out before the end of the promotion and both reps couldn't find a way because they didn't have anything to opt me out except a note on my account.

If we were to add the tethering on to your account you will c the charge....it will not show the soc for tethering until after the promotion is over next month. So you are correct by saying the tethering did not roll over because as far as your billing is concerned it did not roll over because it's a different soc than ur 3g hotspots....if u choose to keep or "add" tethering it will not effect your unlimited data so no worries

ah ok. Couldn't help but be paranoid about it, after what AT&T did when they went tiered last year, although they didn't offer tethering before then for the iPhone, but if you wanted tethering when they added it you had to give up unlimited data.

I always felt it was more people like you as too why people like us have to find a way to get our phones tethering the way we want it and deserve it: FREE.
The majority allow Big Red and AT&T to tell us this is how it will be pay it or don't have it. And people complain about it but still shell out the money to these companies. If more people stood together we'd get things change. Lest that's how it used to be. Now most are too busy bending over to the companies to stand up to them.

WRONG do you remember when Verizon rolled out 3g data service back in the day and it was tiered at first as well? It was long before there were apps for tethering and before a majority of people even knew what tethering was. It's their way of making more money.

Eh you are stretching it there...yeah they had "tiers" but there was always an unlimited data option and lower options, like there are now. With the new tiered plans there won't be an unlimited data anymore...it will be how ATT is currently charging for their data.

[Q] Galaxy Tab for Travelling

Hi guys,
I registered here just to post this. I work in a hospital and I travel a lot. I wanted a device that fit these requirements:
1) 5'' to 7'' screen size (I have to carry and use it with easy in the hospital)
2) Able to install any Android app
3) WIFI capability
4) SIM card capable (here's the big one because I travel a lot)
I don't need to pay $70/month for a data plan but I do need data when I go on a business trip. I live in the USA. Ideally, I would have a SIM card that I can reload with maybe 5 days of unlimited data usage for a trip. I read that the Galaxy Tab has a GSM version. If I buy this version, can I just use a prepaid sim card and stick it in and it will work? Can someone recommend a company that provides this sort of "pay by the day" sim usage? Sorry if these are stupid questions, I'm not very tech savvy.
It's just complicated with all the different carriers out there and I'm not sure what is compatible with what. Like if I buy and unlocked T-mobile version from eBay can I just load any prepaid sim card into it? If anyone has a device in mind that fits these requirements please let me know. Any advice for a humble physician is much appreciated. Thanks!
Hi Doc, I think it would suit you well, I'm also in the medical field. Hopefully you're familiar with to android platform alittle different from apples offerings but I also adjusted
It's small enough and light enough to put in a lab coat believe me i've tried. Battery life lasts me throughout the day.
There are gsm with wifi versions as well, also you can make calls with it if you modify it although it does look kind of ridiculous. But basically you can use it internationally by replacing the sim card.
If you had subscription to lexi it works well. Also diagnosaurus if you have a subscriptions.
The only draw back is the screen in direct sunlight doesn't fair to well. For xrays it does pretty well for viewing if your in radiology.
I can't really complain with software modifications in runs smoothly. I'm Canadian so I'm not familiar with AT&T but you'll need to get a data plan, so if your traveling within the US it will work in any state. Internationally you can purchase prepaid voice and data plans, just used it in France recently. It really depends on the country your visiting, or you could get roaming data plan from at& T but it's costly.
Anyway private message me if you have any questions I'm also looking to sell one as well have a colleague who has no use for it anymore. Hopefully this has been helpful.
Its 7 inches are great, it does install any android app, it does have wifi connectivity and the GSM version (P1000 model) does take a sim card for mobile internet. It is very nice in weight/dimension and you can get it in an amazingly good price.
Can't suggest of a data plan though since I live in Greece..
Thanks for the input guys. I'm going to shop around and do a little more research. I'll let you know if I want to buy yours MarlowXim. Thanks.
If you are using a Pay As You Go plan on your tab, T-Mobile offers a day-pass which allows you unlimited access to the web for a day. The pass itself is $1.49 or so I believe and it basically just takes out 14 minutes from your Pay as you go plan.
I have been using the wifi only tab for a month or two. I have been posting about my experiences. http://sbirchfield.blogspot.com/
I don't know about the paid plans but from a usability standpoint I have been really happy with my Tab purchase. Traveling with only the Tab was scary for me because I have always had a laptop. But I used the tablet and between rdp and web usage I never felt like I wasn't able to do anything for work that needed to be done.
The size of the Tab was perfect for note taking and I laughed at the iPad users struggling to type while I was easily able to hold my tab and type. The pinch and zoom made the smaller screen size very usable. There were a few other Tab users there and we all agreed it was a great device.

Verizon's "Screw Everyone Plan"

OK, so I realized that our long standing unlimited plans are going away. Fair enough, but I've finally done the math and we are all going to get boned in a BIG way (minimum of 25% increase in bill). This is almost enough to go back to the dark ages and forget my stupid cell phone service all together. But before I take the leap out into the vast void, I figured maybe someone else was pawing over this and done some research of their own?
So here's the question I pose:
What's the smartest route to go now? I've been thinking about coverage issues, and obviously Verizon has the biggest reach, but I'm thinking this last "less than tactful" boning was the last straw.
Is anyone else about to flush Verizon, or am I alone in this?
6GB + Cell = $120. 4GB + Cell = $100. I'm not sure whether to laugh, or cry?
I'm paying ~$70... Umm... Seems like Verizon is the new Ma Bell on the block?
Verizon has definitely screwed over the single phone customers.
with that, it's not any better... $59.99 for 450 minutes/unlimited text, plus $30 for 2GB of data
a huge savings of $10.
edit: forgot to mention, if you want more than 2GB, you have to go with the Shared Everything plan even though you're just one person. totally blows.

Ah... Unlimited text. Hmm.. I forgot people are big into texting. OK, so I guess this won't be a system shock for everyone like it is for me. More like slowly turning up the heat on the frog in the pot.
I currently pay about $82 a month for 4GB 450 minutes and 250 texts with nights and weekends and mobile to mobile I don't even get close to the limits on anything. If I had to switch to the share 1GB would be $90 and the 4GB like I have now would be $110 and that doesn't even include taxes and fees. You can get the prepaid smart phone with 1GB for $80 but even that would be more that we are paying now. The only people who save money with these plans are going to be people with multiple devices that don't use a lot of data. It's a good deal if you use a lot of minutes or text a lot, but there are so many alternatives you can use that I cant see this being good for anyone really. I will stay as long as I can keep my current plan otherwise I will just switch to Sprint.
Was just looking at Sprint...

Based on the reviews here in Colorado, and the price difference, as well as the good selection of phones, I'm 99% confident that if Verizon doesn't pull their heads out by summer/fall of next year, I'm jumping to Sprint as well.
This is why I haven't been looking to upgrade. Red might loose a long time customer.

I currently pay around $150 with 1 smart phone and 4 basic. 1400 mins and 150 mb. The new Screw me plan for the exact same except 2 gb would cost me $220 and I lose most of an employee discount for where I work. I checked T-Mobile and they have a comparable plan to where I'm at and u would wind up paying right around where I am right one. Vzw will lose this customer from 1999.

I had 2 phone line with 1400 mins shared and 4g on each phone. I used all 4 every month and my wife hardly used any. I also had unlimited texting. Now i have unlimited calls and texting and 4 g shared and im saving 30 a month. So i guess it helped me out. Seeing as we were only using 4g a month anyways.

I'm currently grandfathered in with unlimited text and data and pretty much refuse to sign a new contract under these new guidelines so I will just keep this plan I have and won't bother buying my phones from them now if their gonna try to charge me full retail, I just picked up a new nexus for $300 on ebay FU Verizon!!!
same boat here... im grandfathered in under the old unlimited plan, but once this contract is up come next May, im jumping on my wife's family share plan with Sprint. Then ill have a better phone, unlimited everything again, and only pay 35.00 per/mo since its chipping in on the plan. WAY better then the 76.00 im paying now and that includes an 18% corperate discount..
Seriously Verizon? get real.

I am thinking going the ebay route, but I am afraid I will get a stolen phone....
I'm grandfathered in on my unlimited too. I got my Revo before they made the upgrade change...lucky me...I have my DX to my partner and her D1 to our daughter. My daughter doesn't need a 4G phone...and because my partner only uses her phone to call people...and doesn't need a 4G either.
I pay way too much a month for only 2000 shared minutes...family and friends (10)...unlimited text and data = $245 on 3 lines.
We is decide to buy Amazon or eBay for upgrades if we decide to get better phones for them.

even if you buy retail i think it's still worth it for the unlimited data.. that being said usually stolen phones won't come with the box & docs so that's a safe way to tell
I bought my past few phones off craigslist, cheaper than ebay, and I always have them meet me at a verizon store.
So you have Verizon activate the phone and then you pay the person you're buying it from after you know it's good to go?
YUP! Well that's what happened last time. Most of the time you can just meet at the Verizon store and have one of the clerks check the ESN# to make sure it hasn't been reported lost or stolen, so normally you dont need to have the seller wait round for activation.
Great tip!

I agree. I sold my REVO and got a Galaxy Nexus so I could keep my unlimited, and I'll never buy a phone from a Verizon store again. I'll keep upgrading via ebay or craigslist and just keep replacing my phone. That way I never have to renew my contract and I get to keep unlimited.
I'm on a family plan. Does this mean upgrading any phone would cause a change in the plan for all of us? I don't think I could hold off all the family members very long to keep the old plan.
