[APP] | UPDATED 12/13/10 | Gingerbread Themed DX KB for 2.1 - Fascinate Themes and Apps

Gingerbread Themed DROIDX Multi touch Keyboard for Eclair 2.1
There are two versions of this keyboard one with regular DROIDX sized keys and one with modified Gingerbread sized keys. I have only done a little work on the keyboard so far but it has the general look, style and feel of the Gingerbread keyboard that most people are looking for, and it is for 2.1!
How to Install:
Make sure that your system is deodexed.
Flash using clockwork recovery. Or if you have the DX Keyboard installed already you can just replace the apk in /system/app.
Supported Device List
* Warning * This is not a guarantee that this keyboard will work for your device and am I in no way responsible for anything happening to your phone. By flashing these files you agree to take all responsibility. This is a list of phones that I have either tested the keyboard on or someone else has reported it as working.
Samsung Fascinate
X10
This should be fixed now with the updated clockwork file, thanks to imnuts.
If you end up getting FC errors delete LatinIME.apk and LatinIMEtutorial.apk in system/app.
Also try deleting cache/dalvik
Change Log
1.2:
- Redid naming convention for the zip files.
- Updated the clockwork files to delete latinime.apk thanks to imnuts.
- Added a screenshot of the smaller keys, Screenshot #2 and #6 (the keys are not any different in landscape).
1.1:
- Created a second version to mimic the actual size and spacing of the real Gingerbread KB
- Fixed a "&" fix that I had missed
1.0:
- Completely redid using new images and text colors from GB KB.
- Fixed the "&" sign from not displaying properly

Found a bug. The '&' character on the popup punctuation board shows up as '&' rather than the character itself. I can get a screenshot if needed.

Yeah im aware there are a couple things I need to fix. Missed the second set of & symbols but already had to do this for the symbols section too. There will be an update coming soon.
EDIT: It is updated, check the first post

Love it so far...typing on it now. Easy install. Running stock deodexed dj05 rom. All i did was go in the system folder with astro and installed it. Didn't have to put in /system/app for it to work or do anything with the lib file

Ya, i tried same. I pretty much already knew it wasnt going to work but gave it a shot as well. Just have to wait for someone to hack it up for our screen res and we should be good to go. I am just taking a shot in the dark and thinking that is the only reason why it wont work and could be wrong.
Mine installed just fine. I just cant get the keyboard to pull up
The Eris is mdpi where as the Droid is hdpi its a resolution thing...even if you got it to load the keys would be to big for your screen much like when the HTCIME first came out and everyone was jumping on the hi res version...

someone may port it...they're several pngs that have to be resized and edited etc porting any apk and or making a theme is a time intensive task so maybe if a themer or a dev feels like jumping on it...it may happen... if you want to tackle it yourself get you a trial copy of winRAR or another file reader and open a mdpi and the hdpi files and compare the res/drawables....thats a place to start I think.

It also has the resolution for each key specified in the decompiled .smali files inside classes.dex, so I think it's a big job to convert it. It's definitely beyond my ability. You'd need to use a tool like APK Manager 4.4 (search XDA for it) or manually decompile it with baksmali.
EDIT: I was wrong, the resolution in the .smali files is relative, so that's not stopping it from working.

Some Hero folks got it working as-is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=710522#post6949662
It sounds like it only works with Vanilla-based ROMs since they have LatinIME in them (Android keyboard), and you have to push it to /system/app/LatinIME.apk (overwriting the Android keyboard) instead of installing it as a user app.

Most likely you can use Root Explorer or a similar app to move it into /system/app while the phone is on, then make sure you check its permissions (should be rw-r--r--), and then reboot for the change to take effect. Again, I haven't gotten this to work for me, but I'm on a Sense-based ROM. The successes reported were on Heros with their "darchdroid" ROM.
I have an idea for getting this to work with Sense, and I'm testing my theory right now. My theory is that we're missing its dependencies (in /system/lib), so I'm going to just flash the "Android Keyboard for Sense" from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5874235#post5874235
And then flash the new Droid X keyboard on top of that. Maybe that'll work.
UPDATE: YES! It works! Hang on, I'll post an update.zip to take care of installing it...

It should already work on Vanilla ROMs. Just install the APK on the first page of this thread. The pre-requisite is that you have to have the Android stock keyboard (com.google.inputmethod.latin) installed, which you do.
The tricky part is a Sense ROM, because it doesn't have the Android keyboard.

So if I already have cm6.1.1 installed, can I just install the Gingerbreadxml.rar and framework-res.apk for the theme to work? Or do I have to reinstall cm6.1.1 with GM theme built in? Thanks
You could, but I would just flash the rom zip over what you have as it has a few extras like the gingerbread browser and phone apk.
Nice find, brswatt. Finally a full theme that doesn't break my tethering. Updating my thread to point to this one.

You could, but you wouldn't have the gingerbread dialer.
So just flash the whole thing. It doesn't hurt.
Then just put the xml on your card.
Here is a LiveWallpapers.apk to adb push or include in that rom before you flash. I replaced the cyanogenmod wallpaper with the nexus s wallpaper.

I put the gingerbread.xml in the cmparts.apk, so we don't need to save it to sdcard/cmtheme.
About the flashable, by the time you run the cleanup.sh, /system might be not mounted. Nevermind, files will be overwritten anyway. But I still think files delete and set-perm should be done within update-script.
EDIT: File updated. Sorry I didn't know it only loads internal theme files that contain the word "STOCK".
Nice theme, but is there a way to get the old notification pull down back? I like the dark themed pulldown better.
Edit: Nevermind...the CMTheme changed it.http://media.xda-developers.com/images/icons/icon6.gif
brswattt, I fixed the framework-res power notification dropdown icons to all black:

I'm a beginner at this, but if you can pull the /assets/keyboards folder out of the apk by using winrar or 7-zip, and you have something like photoshop or illustrator, etc, then you can go bonkers with the image files in there.
when you are done editing it then shove it back in the appropriate place in the apk.
Note that I am not on CM7, but I *think* it should be the same...?

Did you modify a beta swype directly? I'm not sure if that would even have been the problem, but had to ask.

I don't even know if this will work. For all I know it could mess things up, big warning there.
Could you try to move that to /system/app and rename as Swype.apk (if it hasn't been done already --- not even sure that's necessary)?

[Q] Please assist on keyboard mod

Over the past week I have been looking for assistance on having a keyboard I like modded to work with the theme I'm using.
Specs
ROM: Serendipity v6.3 - Theme: ZeuBugTheme (I9000 theme) JS based - Keyboard in question extracted from: Erebos (JPX/U/Y/JS3/JS5/JS7/JS8)
The keyboard is a .apk. I have tried the following to no avail, constantly getting the "Force Close" warning. File name gbkb.apk.
1) Dropping directly into System>app
2) Rename to libjni_latinime.so (not sure if I did it right, but didn't work)
I tried a few other things, things I don't remember that went terribly wrong!
So I ask for help understanding how to make something like this work with my setup.
Interestingly enough, they also have a dialer which I was easily able to replace the DialerTabActivity.apk and have the dialer work. So why not the keyboard?
Pleas ask questions I would truly like to rectify this.
Thanks, Tomween1

I would like this also. I found a thread for the Galaxy Nexus where someone was able to port several TW apps to work with AOSP but when I install them they are not formatted for our resolution. Maybe someone will be able to port those from
this thread.
+1
Stock ICS clock is bad, no Stop Watch
There is a stopwatch, but it is pretty poor compared to the Samsung one.
Inside the clock app, where you set the alarm, there is a sort of a title/tab on top-left that says "Alarms". If you click that, you'll be able to go to a stopwatch. Alternatively, you can go there through the menu button. I am on Doc's V4 and haven't tried other ICS roms, so YMMV.
What I don't like about that stopwatch is two things: It does not use a fixed width font, so the numbers keep "shaking". And it does not keep the phone from going to sleep, which pretty much makes it unusable to me.
So, a big +1 to the OP request.
TW clock is ready
Search for Nexus TW Clock ICS. The only problem I have with it - font and buttons are too big. SOmewhere there is a scale - lcd density or something which is wrong.
There is one for Epic 4G - with perfect size and it does everything - World time, timer, stopwatch, but not alarm! Alarm FC'es.
WTF!
Mystery of apktool
I tried combining these two from Epic and Nexus using apktool and baksmali. The code is almost identical - only one class differs and it's Alarm related. The resources are vastly different in picture sizes and xml's with "dip" in Epic vs "pix" in Nexus. So anyway - I copied Nexus class to Epic, and copied Epic resources to Nexus. None of these two after smaling and apktool build (without errors) got recognised in Launcher - no icons in app drawer, no .odex file in dalvik.
Any experts to solve the mystery?
Mystery is solved
New release is coming... Check out my ROM within couple of hours.
Just copied classes.dex from Nexus ICS clock to Epic 4G clock. And optimized it as usual.
I am patiently waiting for that update, but in the meantime just wanted to say "thank you" for the pointer to the epic clock.

I'm fine either way.
I'm checking Holo Calendar now. First try was disastrous - I had to wipe the data to restore calendar sync.

I am patiently waiting for that update, but in the meantime just wanted to say "thank you" for the pointer to the epic clock.

I pulled the clockpackage.apk from your rom. I copied to the system/app and rebooted. It didn't show up in my app drawer. So I rebooted into recovery and wiped cach partition, dalvik and fixed permissions. It still isn't showing up in my app drawer. Do you have any other suggestions? I'm running ICSSGS latest version.
Edit: Never mind. When I went into All Applications it was disabled. When I enabled it, it is working now.
Smart Alarm Problem
Thank you so much for updating the clock in Nostalgia!
I can't get the smart alarm function to work, though. No matter which smart alarm tone I choose, the "Good Morning" alarm sound plays. Am I missing something, or is there a glitch in the apk?
Thank you!
I installed the app for now, and it works great.
I am thinking about trying out your ROM, though, once 5.3 is out.

I am having the same issue as you were. I followed steps you mention (I copied to the system/app, rebooted into recovery and wiped cache partition, dalvik and fixed permissions).
When I go to settings/apps/all I do not see it there and so I can't enable it as you did. Am I missing something? What is the app named (maybe I missed it)?
I double checked the system/app folder and it is there.
I am running a Boogs latest CM9 Kang (clean) with Launcher Pro (free version).
Anyone have any suggestions?
TIA

Thank you again.
I flashed it, and I like it, other than a couple of small problems that I can live with.
The Samsung Clock works great, and that makes me happy.

Here is a screenshot of what it looks like in the app list. Did you scroll all the way to the right and select all apps? Mine was at the bottom.

I had a similar problem until I found another thread with a solution. The solution was to add clockpackage.odex to system/app. I can't upload odex files, so it is attached in a .zip.
When you copy apk to /system/app - your permission on apk file get screwed up. Nice touch from FileManager writers. So you gotta fix them from the same Root Explorer or Browser to be 644 - read/write by owner, read by group, read by other.
