Your first drop - Galaxy Tab Accessories

Well I had mine today.
I knew it would come as I started to use this tab more and more for my only device. I was trying to get it into a coat pocket that was a bit tight and wham, before I knew it I saw it crashing onto a sidewalk FACE down.
I cringed as I watched it bounce. I didn't hear the screen hit the ground even though it bobbled around face down a few times so i was a bit relieved, but I was still worried picking it up as it hit a corner first.
Happy to say it came through scratch free.
I bought a simple cheap case that does not add much in size and has good grip.
Here it is if anyone is interested. The stylist doesn't work that well and I haven't put the screen protector on yet, but after today I will.
http://www.amazon.com/SAMSUNG-P1000-GALAXY-COVER-CASE/dp/B0047K40EG

I dropped mine on day one as I hadn't put it into my pocket properly, small ding in the corner. I was not happy.
I managed to leave it on the car roof the other day, it fell off & got ran over by 2 cars before it was retrieved, the case mostly saved it, a bit of the plastic on the other corner is damaged, but it still works fine and the glass is unmarked. A bit of touch-up and it's not a big deal.
Good build quality!

my 5 yr old dropped it 2x times already but its taking it great no scratches or anything

Just like my Galaxy S, the Tab too has been on "Extreme Adventure's"!
The SGS has been seen to slide off a kitchen work surface onto a stone floor and shoot out of my car window (after leaving my dashboard at warp 5.0) onto the road....
The Tab has shown great tenacity in following the SGS enduring 'blind maneuvers' by being sat-upon, knocked off a desk and found in an argument with one of my dogs (my grand daughter had been using the App 'Talking Tom' and put the Tab down to then come out and join me in the next room but left Talking Tom waiting for the next voice to come forth.... It did in the guise of Rags, one of our dogs who took an instant dislike to his barks & growls being played back by Talking Tom the Cat)!!
Thank goodness for Gorilla Glass and the Ebay case's I purchased....

I've decided to get the Otterbox Defender case to prevent any accidental drops and hating myself afterward!

I've dropped mine around 4 times so far - the worst being off a shelf around 4 feet high onto a fairly hard bathroom floor. So far it's survived intact - unlike an iPad one of my kids dropped and which now has a nice dent in the aluminium. Maybe plastic was a better materials choice after all....

What case are you using for the times you plan on dropping the case on purpose.
Sorry couldn't resist.

Dropped mine while on a call, it had a gel skin and screen protector so i though it was ok, continued the call but the other person said they could not hear me very well after the drop. I was devestated and thought it would have to go for repair.
Looking at it after the call i noticed the case had come apart near the microphone, i carefully with light pressure snapped the front and back casing back together and now everything if working perfectly and calls are clear again. Phew!

I don't believe this.

I dropped mine on my way out my front door the other day. Luckily it was in a padded sleeve that I had just bought the day before from Walmart. No damage, but it got me thinking about what could have happened if it wasn't in the sleeve. The only protection it has when it's in use is a Zagg Invisibleshield and Zaggskin. Great for scratch protection, but there's no shock protection. So I've ordered an Otterbox for it. I'm sure it'll be tested at some point.

Dropped mine once and ordered the otterbox

Same here - is there any source for spare parts already?

Dropped mine glass side down on the corner of a metal box. Destroyed the antiglare cover.. my heart was in my throat while I removed it to see if there was permanent damage and to my surprise not a scratch.
Very resistant device

Scratch on the frame
Dropped mine first face down on a tiled floor. No problem. The Gorilla glass is great. Second incident was not so much a drop as an unforseen injury. My Tab was naked in my big old Samsonite wheel bag for a longhaul flight while I slept and the top edge of the frame was pushed by the other stuff in the bag against a metal rivet head inside the bag. The result is 2 little patches of scribble in the coating near the head phone jack. I can confirm the frame is aluminium.
Any reccomendations as to the neatest touch up?

Bestskinsever and the Nexus S

Well as soon as I ordered my Nexus S, I also placed an order for a full body BSE skin. I was in Hong Kong at the time and had it shipped to my Canadian address so I could apply it upon my return. A week after ordering it, I noticed BSE started a BOGO promotion which kind of made me but whatever....
Finally after weeks of walking on eggshells using the phone naked worrying about everything and anything scratching it, I returned home and was able to apply the BSE.
I cracked open the envelope, and to my surprise, there were 2 sets of skins inside! Thanks BSE!! They really are an amazing company when it comes to customer service/everything, (I had a mistake with a previous order and they promptly rectified it by sending the proper skin) this time they knew they had an upcoming BOGO promotion and they simply honoured that for me, no questions asked (literally!) so a big cudos to them for that.
Onto the product.....the fit is AMAZING. Considering this skin was available on launch day, thats a pretty impressive feat on its own. I was originally intending on just using the back skin, but once I saw how well done the full body was, I decided to do it all.
The skin includes 1 large cover for the back, and again, fit is perfect. Cutouts for the camera/flash, the speaker, and the USB/mic on the bottom. Also includes a full front skin, again with cutouts for speaker and cam. Lastly, it includes 3 strips, one for the top, and 2 for the sides, meeting at the bottom.
Installation was a breeze, did it in a steamy bathroom for the first time and I think it really helped. I used a big bowl of warm water and 1 tiny drop of dish soap for the 'solution', dipping each piece in this fully before beginning the application.
How does it look? Amazing. 24 hours later there are a FEW tiny bubbles still, but from past experience, I know these will go away within a few more days as the skin starts to cure. The skin is porous so if you get a few bubbles, don't worry, they will evaporate just give it some time. Phone feels great now, has a real solid feel, almost as solid as my Nexus one, and has nice grip to boot. No more worrying about the thing sliding out of my hands.
Only complaint I have is, the screen is VERY glossy now, if there is direct light, reflections are pretty bad. I may remove the front protector in time if this starts to piss me off more, but I think I will be ok as the insane amount of protection I now have is probably well worth a bit of gloss, just being honest. I really like the fact my phone is now *extremely* well protected. From past experience with shields, I can attest to the fact they WILL protect it from a drop of around 5 feet (my iphone fell right out of my pocket onto hard asphalt....the corner of the skin looked like ass after that drop, but upon removal, the iPhone was still perfect), anything higher than that and well.....you dug your own grave....most shields/cases would be useless after a 10ft drop to begin with sooooo.....combine this with general care and your Nexus S should be mint for years to come. I hate big ugly cases, and keep it all nice and snug in my old Nexus One sleeve, I feel *extremely* confident about the phones protection.
All in all, great product, and extremely happy overall. I feel great knowing I have a spare in my drawer for in the future, in case I DO drop the thing again......Dont have pics yet as, well, the Nexus S is pretty much my camera I'll dig out my HTC Aria and try and post some pics soon.
For 9 bucks, this is probably the deal of the year HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Nice to read, ordered my BSE skins last friday. I already have some small scratches on the plastic back cover, but they are only visible in direct sunlight with reflection.
Guess the skins will be nice then.

Haha I did also get a tiny scratch on the back my phone also by accidentally putting it in the days designated 'change' pocket (dammit), and dropping it off my bed after playing with it one night hdjbfsdg
The shield covered them completely....keeps looking better by the hour literally as it cures.
can someone post a link to the product. not sure what I am looking for.

Does the total body skin include the screen skin? Or do I have to buy both of them if I want to cover the NS ENTIRELY?
I got mine just today! Excellent! I am really very surprised at the quality considering this is half the price of the likes of zagg.
Here is BSE on my HD7, I have an order in for my NS already.
Sorry if this has been asked before, but does this screen protector have the same type of texture as the InvisibleShield ones? (orange-peel texture/bumpy).
How's the friction on these? Smooth or sorta sticky?

It is basically the same material as the InvisibleShield ones....so your mileage will vary on how it looks when it comes to bumps and orange peel. I have been using these 'shield' type protectors on my last few devices, and the number 1 thing I learned is the end result is entirely up to how well the installation goes. The first time I installed one back on my iPhone it looked pretty bad at first, but again after a few days it cleared up for the most part. This time I installed mine in a steamy bathroom and was meticulously anal during application, and it looks great.
They do give a bit of grip, but nothing that impedes touchscreen performance IMHO. The phone feels a lot safer and a lot more secure in my hand now thats for sure, and ultimately thats the reason I put this thing on in the first place
I've tried the Zagg screen protector on my Nexus S when i first got it from Best Buy since it was the only screen protector out at the time and it sucked...the orange peel was terrible and the screen was really grippy and not smooth to use. I got my BSE a few days ago and it looks less bumpy but the biggest advantage is that the screen is actually smooth when you use it. I have no complaints about BSE and heck it's only 9 bucks with shipping for the full body while zagg was 20 bucks for just the screen
Did you take the back off for installation?

I only applied a protector to the screen. Yes, I added a tiny drop of dishsoap and used a spray bottle to apply a fine mist of water to the screen protector. Laid it on and then used a microfiber cloth to work out any bubbles.

I bought a full body BSE and mucked it up. I applied it dry since I've never done a BSE before. The back is okay with some bubbles and dust, but the front was a mess. I replaced it with an eBay matte antiglare one now. It does the job but dulls the screen. On the plus side the screen is fingerprint resistant now and feels smooth.
To answer some of the recent questions
Yes I removed the back before applying the skin to the back, just made it so much easier.
As mentioned before I used a bowl of warm water with the smallest drop of dish soap inside. I then dipped the skins completely in the water and gave them a bit of a shake, that was it for the water. I had a paper towel handy and as I squeegied the water out I always had the paper towel with light pressure on the back to absorb any and all water leakage.
I also did it in my bathroom with the shower cranked on full heat with the doors+window+fan all closed. The hot steamy environment made it MUCH easier due to the fact there was no dust/hair/whatever flying around. Made for a painless application, and it looks great.
Here we are a few weeks later and the skin looks absolutely amazing now. Not a single air bubble, all gone. Its near impossible to tell the skin is here unless you know its there, or notice the seams on the corners. Love love love love love love love this skin. Would never ever throw a bulky case on my phone after using this.
How is the feel on the screen? Is it rubbery like the ZAGG ones or smooth like Clarivue ones or somewhere in between?

Honestly, how are you guys that are using the Nexus S without a case doing it without dropping the phone?
I have thought of using it naked many times and I take it out of the case for a while and every time I handle it I'm scared I'll drop it. It's so slippery. Even with an invisible shield type protector on the back... It seems that it is inevitable that the phone will be dropped and it doesn't feel like it will take a good fall very well.
Maybe you're not really using it without a case.. maybe its out of the case at work on the desk but in a case while you're out and about?
The only thing iv had on my nexus since day one was a screen protector and that was because of the fear of the anti fingerprint coating peeling off. Iv dropped mine from about two feet onto a wood and carpet floor probably 5 times and I have zero nicks or scuffs. Don't let the plastic back fool you this phone is pretty durable.

I left mine naked for the first 6 weeks or so. Then I fumbled and dropped it onto a brick fireplace that I was sitting on; nasty scuff mark on the right side.
Now it wears a matte black TPU case.
I bought the platinum case for my nexus when I bought it but I run naked now. I have ghost armor over the whole thing and I've dropped it a.few times. There are a few dings on the screen protector but the body is perfect.

like 10 times before the silicon case arrived, and the S curve case
smashed against the floor and all kind of other places, and it has survived so far
that's the good thing of plastic body vs. aluminum body
all my old HTC phones are a mess, broken apart with missing pieces of aluminum
Part of the beauty of the Nexus S is it's design and look .... a case just makes it ugly .
The way i see it is that it's only a phone ..... no need to baby it.
I've had mine naked since day one and it still looks like new .
Mine has been naked since day one. It isn't THAT slippery. Only time it has dropped was when I let my sister hold it.

Still prefer a case for this to be fully safe. Waiting for Case-mate.. grr

I have had it naked for a month, never dropped it once, and there are no major scratches anywhere! However I ordered a skin from SkinIt (after seeing someone elses in an image here ) and I am using that on the back so i can place it down without worrying as much, mainly for minor scratch protection. Not once has it nearly slipped out of my hand either. Very happy with both the phone itself and the skin if others are contemplating it.
Maybe it's slippery compared to your past phones, but this seems to be on par with all of my previous phones (Sammy E250, Nokia E63 and now the NS).
i also use mine without any case or something and i can say it still look like new..by the way its not slippery at all..
i used to use the case from bestbuy (the 2 peice crap)... then i moved onto gelaskin + screen protector + pouch
<3 the latter, i haven't dropped my phone yet since purchase on release day (knock on wood!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

My Nexus S has been running around naked since day one when I bought it on release day. Still looking perfect with that nice smooth screen. Surprisingly not a scratch even though I dropped it twice on wood floors.

Bezel is a scratch and gouge magnet

Anyone else experience this? I actually put mine into a screen protector and case the first day I got it. Popped it out yesterday and found the bezel scratched to high heaven. I hate piano black plastic.
I think the case traps dust under there that grinds it away worse, but I can't imagine it fairing well naked for very long.
Edit: only had this thing since the 9th.

I have never had mine in a regular case. I do have one of those leather "pocket" style cases I slide it in and out of when I have got it in my jeans. Mine is as nice as the day I got it I think. I also put a screen protector on day 1.
Sorry to hear about your bad experience.
I have had a Skinomi protector and Trident Aegis case on my phone from the first 15 minutes of owning my X. I am a machinist so my phone frequently sees metal shavings and coolant from my hands on a regular basis. My phone still looks brand new from launch day when I take my case off. The mesh over the external speaker does wonders as every few days I have to blow off some of the finer shavings. And every other week I take the case off to clean out the very little dust that gets in it. I would suggest a different case if you are having cosmetic issues.

I had the black model and after 3 days I noticed a couple of nicks on the bezel myself. I take perfect care of my devices and it hadn't been bumped or anything. I swapped it for the white model that way it doesn't show and scratches or dust.Still looks brand new after a few weeks.
My Moto X has fallen out of my lofted bed (~7ft high) 3 times now, and all that's happened is that a tiny little nick in the bottom bezel. nothing else. no screen cracks, dents, anything! This phone is built like a tank!
I've had mine for about 3 weeks, no case, just a screen pro. Only damage I have is from when I accelerated hard in my truck and my phone flipped out of my mount, it flew out flipping and the bottom of the phone hit the rim of a red bull can... It left a small dent/nick On the back portion of the bezel :'(
Bought a better mount and since then haven't had any other signs of wear.

I dropped mine the other day. From waist height (I'm 5'8). I had it resting on a pouch on my duty belt and forgot it was there when I was walking to my car. Fell right to the ground and landed face down, I feared the worst. I picked it up and not a scratch.
My phone is in a ringke fusion case which now has a scuff on the corner (would have been a devastating blow for a naked phone). But all in all it survived.
.
Dropped mine 4 times on to concrete from about 3.5-4 feet.
I'm using the ringke slim case. It's landed all ways, even face down.
Not a scratch on the screen or camera. Ringke case slim corners see minor scratches but the actual nexus 5 looks perfect.
I dropped my phone at a bar last over the weekend. Not sure how it landed, but the back of the phone came unsealed near the top. I pressed it back in, and at first glance it looked fine, but when I got home I noticed it doesn't quite seal the same. If I handed the phone to someone they probably wouldn't be able to tell , but I know it's there. Heh. Pressing on that same corner, it kinda, well, creaks a little...it's probably from the back of the phone. Everything works fine though thankfully.
While I've never used a case in a phone, this is only the second time I've dropped my phone in the last few years. The irony is I did buy a couple of cases for it, (the ones with the clear back) but they were so slippery I decided not to use them. I then ordered a bumper only style case (the abacus one) that came in the mail the day after it happened.
I'm sure I'll forget about it in a few weeks. Still not sure I want to use the bumper case though, it is too thick, and I think it actually will make me more likely to drop the phone.
getting the official case was the best decision ever
I've dropped it multiple times and not a scratch
What's the point of this thread? ANY phone that gets dropped is just pure luck of the draw on the outcome, no phone is significantly different in any way on surviving or not surviving a fall. You could drop a phone 15 times from head height and never get damage and then drop it once from 12" and shatter the screen.

Dropped mine.. and it was naked. No protectors or anything, It was in the first week I bought.
Dropped some like 4 feet above the ground and it fell above around 5 feet from myself. It survived ,.. a corner of the back slightly came out, I pushed it in and it did settle.. still the corner was slightly out. Went to LG and they said it is dropped and I ofcourse said , I didn't do it, it was the same when I got the phone so they opened the whole back panel and showed me the corner's plastic which was kinda bent slightly. They said it can be only because someone applied the pressure. They said don't worry, it's slightly out and it's hardly noticiable. My friend's have been seeing my phonefrom last 2 weeks and they still haven't figured out this.. so

Droped mine from a hand rail at the top of the stairs which is about 3 metres high after a few beers. Fell off the banister, hit the arm rail about half way down then hit the hard wooden floor. Only protection was a very thin cheap £1.99 ebay gel case.
Was the longest walk back down the stairs ive ever had. was laying face down. picked it up, and to my surprise it had completely survived without a scratch. The back had very slightly unclipped but clipped straight back together and the gel case had a nick out of it which must of happened when it hit the hand rail on the way down, this probably broke its fall that resulted in two simultaneous 6 foot drops rather than the full 3 metres or so drop... very lucky.
Phew!
Dropped mine once but it has a cruzerlite on it, landed face down, my whole world went into slow motion because it was like the 4th day I had it.
Dropped mine on railway ballast. I've seen many electronic devices shatter into dust on ballast, but I just took a little chunk out of the bottom right corner, with no protector. Well chuffed. The 911 batch if that helps.

Those must be some skinny jeans. Gotta take care with your large screened, small bezel devices there just isn't enough structure in the phone to protect it like smaller sized phones.
And this is why I insure my phone but I have dropped mine from waist height 3or4 times just have a tpu case no damage

[Q] Cracked screen

I have the flexible glass screen protector from verizon on my 64g ballistic nylon with no case. Today while getting out of my car (a lowered vw golf) my phone fell off my lap on the the ground probably like only 2 feet from lap to the driveway. Screen completely shattered..... i thought gorilla glass 3 was supposed to be strong? Anyone else crack their screen yet? I know i get one free replacement but still i don't feel like the screen should have cracked this easily.
It's all about the angle in my experience. I've dropped phones and thought they were broke for sure only to see no damage and another time no biggie and I had a broken screen. Usually hits a corner just right. Sorry for your loss. On the a new one..
Its glass. Drop it at the right angle and it breaks.
Am i the only one who has cracked mine though? Has any one else dropped theirs yet? Crack or no crack upon dropping? just curious

The one time replacement is nice, but had to use it in less than 48 hours. They said I was the first one and they hadn't actually been trained on it yet. So they learned that night lol
It's a huge slab of ultra thin glass, drop it and it will break. It is scratch resistant (gorilla glass) but not shatter-proof, and screen protectors do basically nothing to protect from drops. A fall onto concrete is more likely to break it as well due to variations and protrusions on the surface. If you place our phone face down on a perfectly flat surface you'll notice that the top edge of the phone curves ever so slightly up from the screen, this helps protect it from drops on a flat surface because the force is distributed to those corners instead of directly to the glass. Concrete will usually have sharp protrusions or pebbles or rocks that cause the force to be localized in spots in direct contact with the glass, causing the cracks.
At least you get a free one-time screen replacement (one of the things I like about our phone and is awesome of Moto to do it)
Yup. 3 days in and it fell off the couch and into the hardwood floor. Cracked. Slightly irritated because my Maxx made this same fall a million times. I did not have a case on the turbo. Replacement phone is on the way along with lifeproof case
My screen was scratched within the first few weeks. As thin as a strand of hair, yet extremely infuriating nonetheless. So much for Gorilla Glass.

I guess I am the only who doesn't drop their phone regularly.... I haven't ever scratched or broken a screen and I have had smartphones since the original Droid and I never use a case or screen protector.

I'm sure you know this but there are many common things harder then gorilla glass. Sand is by far the worse corporate in everyday use.

You beat me - I had mine a week. Dropped on a hard floor at work on Friday less than 1 week after I got it. After a few expletives, I phoned Verizon - had to tell them about the one time replacement, but she happily checked into it and I had my new phone on Monday (they say we get a like new refurb - I wonder if I got yours!
I dropped mine from a few feet. The next day it started power cycling over and over, probably 2 hours into this the phone was so hot I couldn't touch it. After that the screen quit working, still seems to function though, 16 days into having this phone so I just missed the hassle free trade in from verizon. Looks like I get to play the waiting game on Motorola, and oh yeah that department is only open Mon-Thurs.
It's all about the angle of the drop. Mythbusters tested it; see: Prince Ruperts Drop. You can drop the glass and it's completely fine, but when you introduce a large force over a small area(say dropping the phone on the corner or in this case cutting the tail end), it shatters. Otterbox commuter cases have saved my previous phone time and time again(At least 10-15 drops) because it absorbs the impact so much less force is transferred to the glass.

I had to return my first one on the first day. Not because of broken glass but the frame around the grass had a spur on it that cut my hand every time I tried to use the volume keys. I went directly to a store to get it replaced. They tried to tell me I had to do it over the phone and have a refurbished unit sent to me. I argued with them and said, I have only had the phone for one day and I paid full price for the phone. There is no way you are going to give me someones phone that they returned. I paid for a new phone and that's what I am going to get and for the price I paid, it better be without any scratches out of the box.
But the phone just coming out, they shouldn't have a lot of refurbished phones, so odds are I would have gotten a new unit. I just didn't want to wait for it to ship to me.
I shattered my first Droid. Was racing my 12 year old grandson and it flew out of my pocket and hit the road. Still have it with a cracked screen. It's my trophy for winning the race when he said I was too old and slow.
To be fair, the newer tempered glass screen protectors protect EXTREMELY well from drops. I work for Best Buy in a large city. I sell anywhere from 15-30 phones a day (and see hundreds of them) and have only actually seen one phone shattered through a Zagg Glass (out of at least a thousand examples) and the one that broke was dropped from a 2nd store balcony.
