WP7 on the N1??? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Did someone try porting the WP7 to the N1??

Not possible.

More importantly... WHY?
That'd be like taking the motor out of a Honda Civic and sticking it in a Lamborghini Gallardo. Fail.

he has a point

I think it could be a great idea, because, for example, I really want our Nexus One to be like the HTC HD2! Been able to "work" also with other OSes..
Plus, Windows Phone 7 seems to be very snappy and minimal!
Android is obviously better, but I really want to try the Seven

...

There was another thread asking the same question and someone said only its possible to port WP7 to a android phone if there already exists a WP7 which is basically the same device with WP7 on it.
I think the HD7 is pretty much the same device as the HD2?

Hd2 is the greatest HTC device in the market thanx to all the devs to bring out the real potential of the LEO.wish all htc devices was able to do that.i would rather try wp7 on my hd2 rather than my n1.hd2 is fully functional android just like every other native androids and its running better than my n1.

First of all I'm glad to know that my curiosirty has interest with other people as well.
second, the reason for the WHY is of course curiosity, and the fact that the N1 is a capable device and it'll be interesting to see how it would function with other OS.

I with I had the money to carry as much devices as I wanted to.
That's the reason I wanted the N1, and Android for that matter, to be flexible...

That's handy then, as teardowns show the HTC Surround is basically a Nexus One.

HD2 runs Android awfully, compared to N1. I couldn't stand looking at it stuttering all over the place where N1 flies.
The other problem for this port is bootloader and FS compatibility. While it could probably be overcome, it might not be straightforward, just as it's quite hard to install Windows and Linux on the same partition, both using different native FS. On WM phones there is many-years-old way of loading other systems "under" Windows (I'm not really into details, but AFAIK the other system doesn't load from bootloader, but from early stages of WM kernel - which is the reason why WM-loaded OSes run like crap). On Android phones, it doesn't work that way, and there is no universally used way of loading other OSes.
And the biggest problem for all the curious would probably be just that no dev has taken interest in doing it.

if HTC 7 Surround is simular to N1, is it possible to port the whole bootloader and system of surround to N1. and and run Android "on the top" of WP7 just like what HD2 does

this could be a very very interesting project... as there are quite a few developers currently working on a WP7 like launcher for android. and if we could run wp7 it would be a pretty amazing.

that is actually provably false due to the fact the HD2 is TMobile-only. the devs have squeezed every ounce out of it no doubt, but for a phone to be the greatest HTC device it would have to be available across all GSM networks, not just the B-list one

for AT&T 3G?
Edit: Ok, I guess the Telstra HD2 had AT&T 3G bands, so you could import the phone at a premium. i can't find it on Ebay, but the Cell2Get.com has it for a reasonable $831.99. it better be the greatest ever

I would love trying wp7 on my nexus. The OS interests me, not enough though to shell out for an entire new phone. Especially since all the wp7 phones really aren't special hardware wise.

So....
What does it take to port an OS??
do we need a new bootloader? do we need the WP7 source code?

You will never get WP7 source code.
I guess you'd need a complete dump from the Surround to work from.

Would it be possible to have Android on this phone since its basically the same phone as the hd2
I assume you mean as a duel boot? As i see a lot of people asking to put android on it yet they could just buy the htc desire hd an almost identical phone that is designed to work with android. tbh i would love to see some sort of emulator for a couple of the apps but i am so so glad to be rid of android i loved it but it felt like an early 90's computer all basic with no flair.
I think it would be possible but it will be glitchy and a long time off my advise would be if you want android to buy an android device they have a lot to choose from.

its more advanced then the HD2 and has less touch buttons
however its a bit of a silly question IMHO. If you want android get the Desire HD.
Why put a round peg in a square hole ?
I actually think it's a great question.
Why would people want it? because it gives you CHOICE!
It would be great if you could dual boot with Android and WM7 so you get the best of both worlds: taking advantage of Android whilst also using WM7 while it matures. I'd absolutely love to have a device with android and WM7.
Wish I was a developer, I'd work on that project straight away! I'd pay to have a dual-booting HD7 (or desire HD!) !
Bring it on dudes!
Wow please close this thread since there are so many options available for android these days and if anyone needs a android phone they should buy an android phone
I'm not sure I agree with the last poster. T-mobile has no android alternative to the HD7 that I am aware of.

really? for tmous or t-mobile europe? Cause there is the g2 and mytouch4g that just came out android...
To the OP, considering how the hd2 android is booted from the sd card and technically, there is no sd card on the wp7 (once it's inserted it becomes program memory), I don't think this is happening anytime in the future. Gotta agree, that dual booting for computers can be important to some people, but for phones, I just don't see it happening with the newer os's.
I'm a layman with no technical knowledge, just interested, so my comment was more on a visceral level than technical. To clarify, what I meant to say was that '...there is no android alternative ...... I am aware of'...' regarding the large screen format of the HD7. I bought a G2 but returned it because it was bulky, and I decided that I did not need the slide out keyboard. I really liked my first foray into the andriod world during my two weeks using the G2, and was hoping that I would be able to use the HD7 with android as well.
PS. I'm in Florida.

I agree. I don't get it. WinPho7 is amazing. If you want andriod, dont get a brand new phone that just came out with a new windows version. Sure andriod has its perks, but so does Windows. I've had Apple, Andriod and Windows, and I just dont get the point of changing something off the bat. Altho He is probably thinking that the HD7 is like the HD2, with WinPho6.5, which I personally did not like. But it did have its perks too, like multitasking. I don't think many realize how long and how much work it took to bring Andriod to the HD2. I'm not a developer myself, but I can only imagine!

Okay I find out there is a phone out that's come close to the hd7.. its called HTC desire HD.. its looks just like the hd7 but the only thing defferent is the cam. Which is a 8mp instead of 5mp and its a android phone.. its not windows..

If you want an android phone.. Why are you buying a hd7??
The answer is maybe. If you want Android, get an Android phone. There is a high likelihood that someone will at least attempt to port Android to the HD7. Whether or not it will be anytime soon, if it will be stable/usable, or if it will actually happen at all remains to be seen. My advice is not to buy a phone on the hopes that Android will be ported to it.

Crap! I knew it would happen

I knew Android would eventually get ported to the HD7, but I sold mine! The HD7 will make an excellent Android phone, and an excellent upgrade from the HD2, because of the cap buttons. And now that WP7 is a half-hearted, at best, mobile OS, the timing for this is right on.
Thankfully I have an HTC Inspire, which is very much similar to the HD7 with cap buttons and all.

My roommate has an HD7. Please tell me someone here knows simplified Han Chinese (according to Google Translate). He would love it
i'm an HD7 user from Taiwan, and am patiently waiting traditional Chinese input for WP7.
this would be nice, but it would have to be a very complete and stable OS for me to make a switch.
IMO, WP7 is good enough for me now. Just need that chinese input, and i'm happy.
Preety Impress and sure it will rock on the HD7
But having come from android to windows, I seem to prefer Windows mobile now compared to android and may only consider flashing it if its dual boot or something
WP7 seems to have grown on me
Still have my HTC HERO for my android needs (although I just use it for flashing new roms and thats it nowadays )
dual booting would be awesome, hahaha
Holy Crap!
Can I have one too??
Im not impressed really.
These are the same people who showed us a video of wp7 on hd2 (back in november), booting from nand without magldr, but they never released anything until cotulla did it.
Android? Is that that really laggy, fragmented "operating system" which is a bastardization of a clone of UNIX, made by an Internet Advertising Company? The one that's "open source" but for which they're not releasing the source any more? The one that recently got hit by a bunch of trojan apps, and which the Pandora app exploited to snaffle user data?
Oh.

Not really. In the case of WP7, it turns out to be half-hearted at best. Android would be an improvement, especially on the HD7. It would be like pulling a Yugo hamster wheel out and installing a Corvette LT1.

I think the port is done for the heck of it. I really don't see a pont to run Androind on my HD7. The biggest hurdle for me to try another OS is thelack of WP7 keyboard on those OSs. I cannot imagine typing using another SW KB anymore.

Android for HD7

So I don't know why WP7 people feel the need to bash the ones who want android for this device. I'm an HD2 owner, have had android on it for basically the entire time I have owned it...and it's been awesome, because lets face it, Windows Mobile 6.5 was garbage. I recently dropped it and cracked the screen pretty severely, checked into getting it replaced by my $8/month phone insurance (which I have since cancelled), and they (not shockingly) advised me that they can no longer replace it with another HD2, but with a HD7 instead.
So I looked here first, wondering how easily I could put android on it and was shocked by the lack of android development, and the numerous attitudes towards it. Obviously it would be better/easier to get another "4.3" inch HTC phone that runs andro-crap", but I won't be able to do that for a couple of months and was looking at a quick fix. I'm just surprised that it hasn't been done, since it's been done on almost EVERY OTHER PHONE. I just don't get it. So I'm going to buy a digitizer and just replace the screen on my HD2. Just thought I would share my experience. Oh, and yes, I have played around with WP7, and while much better than 6.5 it's just not for me.
Let the bashing commence...

I agree with you completely. I'm in the exact same situation as I had a dual boot android/wp7 hd2 and the digitizer broke. Mostly I used android because of the apps, but I like wp7 better for it's sleek design.
I'm baffled how 75% of people on the hd7 threads can say 'JUST GO BUY A ANDROID PHONE" and "why would you want to dual boot an hd7?". I could buy an android phone but, stupid tmobile replaced my hd2 with an hd7 for free. it's a great phone, there are few which are better currently.
In the hd2 threads, most people wanted to push the limits and explore every possible option; that seems to be missing in large part from the hd7 threads. "just go buy an android phone" will never be the answer.
shame on you who say this...
The only reason to bash I can see, is the lack of people reading and realizing that there is a dedicated Android thread just a couple lines above, where stuff like this should have been posted. Haha...
Otherwise, there is just very little interest in getting Android on this device, which means that it makes more sense to go buy an Android phone, because you're just going to be waiting a while for an Android solution, on a device/platform that does not need it as much as something like the HD2/WinMo did. Hence why there is little to no progress on getting Android on this device.

if this is true then why dont you buy a mozart and try this rom...
The overall WP7 posse hardly resembles the WM crowd.
I've been a die hard Windows fan ever since my AT&T 8525-even before that with a couple PPC PDA's. When I lost that phone I replaced it with a Samsung Epix. Despite my horrible experience software fiascoes and the Epix, I still returned to Window's Mobile when I got my Tilt2. It was while I was dealing with my Epix that I discovered a cooked rom on a site that I had not previously heard of, XDA Developers. I now use this site a my primary guide to purchase new phones...if I can't hack it and install custom roms I have no interest in it.
Through my time with my Tilt2 I made some observations about the Windows Mobile community. Many of them were like me and had over time found many CABs that work well for them and were content with a platform that the were familiar with. Many of them were veteran programmers well versed in C++ and could really do some magic. Others just signed a two year contract with the cheapest old smart phones their provider was clearing out. What ever the reason we had our devices in a world where IOS and Android were rapidly taking over. Every one worked together and amazing things were accomplished. In the Touch Pro 2 forums, Android and Ubuntu was running, and a lot of you are familiar with everything that was done with the HD2. These things happened because WM fans by nature enjoyed doing them.
As Windows Mobile phones started to die off through breakage and device upgrades, a lot of my companions switch gears to the Iphone after it made great strides since the first gen EDGE only model, in OS capability, hardware performace, and a now enormous hacking community. Others who wanted remain anti Apple and wanted more freedom out of the box went with Android.
It finally came to my time in the begining of this year to upgrade. I knew very little about Windows Phone 7 devices except that I did not know a single person who owned one and that it was not backwards compatible with any of my software. Being completely anti Apple I began shopping around fully intending to buy an Android device. I started playing with floor models and I noticed one thing about every Android device. No matter how fast the hardware was, when I would touch and slide to unlock, there was always a noticeable lag. I found that to be a bad sign. Then when navigating the phones, they all lack the responsiveness of my wifes Iphone 4. So I tried the Windows Phone devices and they were all incredibly responsive. In all the menus and and web browser I slide my finger rapidly trying to out run the display and I swear I could not find any where that lagged. I was intrigued and hooked. After checking XDA and of all the WP7 phones available to me with AT&T, the HD7s was the only one with custom roms.
I believe this to be the only reason any of us here. Window Phone 7's foundation is simply flawless. Now that's not to say over all the OS is any where near perfect. It is severely lacking in software, customization, and even basic preferences. It is in these ways I've described WP7 as ever more "iPhone" than the iPhone itself. Now all this mean's is the biggest reason any body has a WP7 device is because the actually like it. So it's not far from reason there is little interest in changing operating systems. We've reached a point were all smart phones have virtually equal internal hardware so phone are chosen primarily based on software. The people who find themselves stuck with an HD7 against their liking are a very small fraction of an already small community. Those coming from an HD2 or a Rodium know that to get Anrdroid onto these devices took countless man hours from many very determined and very talented people working together. They just aren't with us here in the HD7 community. We are lucky to have the very talented developers that are here producing custom Windows ROMs.
Own android nd wm7/hd7
I agree with all of you but, with that said this is my take on it. I am using Simple Mobile $60 unlimited plan by the way just so everyone knows. I have both a htc hd7 with a 32gb sd in it- its running mango. I also have three android phones. HTC wildfire s in white, Samsung Vibrant, Htc mytouch 4g(my only 4g phone). Starting from the top. All my android phones have custom roms installed and are rooted. I love android as much as the next guy cause when I use those phones I love the apps and love that I have all of them nearly maxed out on there performance figures due to the roms and overclocking.
This being said all my android phones still can not keep up with my hd7 in everyday use when you talk about smoothness. Like the guy before me was saying as well how all the android phones he tested lagged when unlocking. That is still the same situation here with me after installing custom roms which did make the phones faster and after overclocking made then even faster. But even with my hd7 running a stock mango rom it still is the phone that I use most because of the smoothness and responsiveness that it has when using it for normal everyday smartphone activities like gps, internet browsing, watching videos, playing music, and texting and calling of course. This stock oem wm7.5 mango hd7 works better at all these things than any of my android phones.
This being said I would like to have android on the device as a dual boot that way I would get rid of my other android phones and just have this one phone for both. But, I would still use wm most of the time, which is the reason that I think ppl who own an hd7 or any other wm7 or 7.5 phone own them cause everything works great. and yes i agree with the other guy before me in saying that it does need more development in customizations and applications. but where it lacks here it makes up for in performance and ease of use. so in my opinion there is a plus and minus to both android phones and wm phones. the only question is which one will correct there downfalls first. apples will not be talked about with me cause i hate them but, as far as wm and droid go both need improvements.
Going with this thread this would be my reason for why i think no one has really developed an android system for this device yet cause unlike the android devices the hd7 does everything the way a smartphone should. I would dual boot but, i would never wipe wm7.5 off of it cause that would just be stupid and would be like downgrading. performance wise wm7 > android anyday until android fixes their laggy os.

why did u say that? hd2 is a legend. born as wp6.5 device, got android port and now upto 4.0.4, lol it is one of the device that actually run 4.0.4 before any other official updates. and it have fully working wp7.5 tango running on it. and is 8779.8 version update( lol i m not sure if any official updates have gone so far). and i am not planning to mention other os's that runs on hd2.
the only thing that hd2 lacks is current dual/quad cores and gpu's. any how it have a descent cpu of 1ghz single core ( functions flawless upto 1.5 ghz oc) and enough gpu to run wp7.5 pretty fast( even hd7 wont run that much fast).
and i am dam sure hd2 will be running wp8 pretty soon.. ( may be before any official wp8 device!!!!!!!)

I seriously doubt it. The devs have moved on to new devices.
Maybe they'll try to port it but it would be a ton of hard work because they switched from Windows CE to Windows 8 kernel. Also, WP7 only got ported because some drivers from Microsoft got "leaked" since Microsoft were using the HD2 to develop WP7 anyway.
But hey, never say never!
hd2 wp8
I personally think there will be Windows phone 8 interface to HD2
Thread cleaned.
Watch the attitude...
We won't see WP8 for the venerable HD2 because of the simple fact that WP8 has a new kernel. So you would have to rewrite every driver of each hardware component like CPU, Radio, GPU, Wifi, Bluetooth etc. And I really doubt someone will accomplish that.
Guys Just relax,There's DFT
I belive there will be a new MAGLDR version when wp8 is on the way of HD2.

Yes the HD2 has been seen running test versions of WP8.
The important question is whether it will be possible to flash it in such a way to make it run on the HD2 once WP8 is out.
MS is very keen on the secure boot feature of the new snapdragon chips which is partly why we won't see WP8 for our current devices.
I hope someone with more knowledge can elaborate on thisĀ“.
The chip is called TPM which will be responsible for the secure boot procedure.

Despite all aspects, if look on new HTC devices specification, clearly HD2 if good enough to run WP8. Spec is same like low new model.
It is just up to guys from Dark Force and others.
Hey guys, as my colleague has already stated above, please watch the attitude and show each other some respsect.
Thread cleaned.
Hey guys, do you think it is worth to buy a HD2 now? I really miss the WM, but I like the WP too, mostly because I already got used with it.
Can the HD2 dual-boot WM and WP? Would not be kinda late to buy one?
Since my 200Mhz Gene is almost useless, and my Lumia won't be upgraded to WP8 anyway, I thought it is a good ideia. What you think?
Thanks.

Absolutely. It's one of the best Windows mobile 6 devices, and it also runs Android (as a joke, you can even run WM7 on it, but the worst part of censorship is *******************).

And it actually shipped with WM5.x... At least my Telstra HD2 I bought for AT&T did. It's probably the most versatile phone ever made.

The OP asks if the HD2 can possibly run WP8. In case you weren't paying attention before launching your tirade, the HD2 is a Windows MOBILE device. As in, started life as a WM6.1 phone and is the only device that has been modified to run Android AND WP7 successfully. It is not a stretch to think that some clever devs will try to do it, purely for ****s and giggles. Forget about different kernels and any other obstacles, that is irrelevant. Being able to proclaim "I did it!" is satisfaction enough.
Good thing hackers don't all think like you, there would never have been an xda.
i remember that when WP7 launched,,some ppl said "WP7 wont work on HD2 cuz hardware stuck, new file structure bla bla bla,,, " ,, now when i see ppl talking about WP8 wont work on HD2 cuz new kernel and bla bla,, its being funny... This is XDA,, dont be precise when you talking about "hacking"... i am sure if XDA devs want to make it works on HD2 they will do it,, remember Android and WP7 on HD2 process.. yes devs move to new devices,, yes HD2 is pretty old,, but HD2 is a legend,, i can tell that some devs gonna try just because its HD2... wm6.5 wp7 and android,, why not WP8??
Because WP8 is a completely different OS, altogether.
Giving it to current devices as a scaled version as 7.8 is the most they could do.
Now, its a OS, proper modding and changes could get it to the HD2 or even the current devices, except the GPU rendering, its too much for a single core.
The most you will get is the HS and integrated stuff, you wont be able to play the games WP8 devices can play!
this is still a 50:50 thought.
Wp8 HD2
Can't wait to see new WP8 on the history making HD2! Hopefully..

Wp8 on android device?

Is it possible to run an actual Windows Rom in an android device? I remember hearing about this probably a few years ago with wp7, I could've sworn people had figured it out. I've got an AT&T note and miss Windows, but not enough to permanently switch to a Windows device. Any ideas?

Ignore the genius who says never. It comes down to hardware support. If you had two phones on the market with identical hardware, one running Windows Phone, one running Android, then you might be able to switch the bootloaders and operating systems. WP8 has a new secure boot which I know less about. WP7 didn't, but some of the bootloaders were still locked.
So yes, it's possible, but I don't know of a compatible Android device. The first I'd look at would be the ATIV S and the Galaxy S III, but I expect they're very different. There are a few slightly more complicated options but they're not really worth mentioning because.. developers just aren't interested.
I'm sure you could do it if you were willing to give up the rest of your life for a while. Shame isn't it? You'd think MS would release Windows Phone as a download for existing popular handsets in the same way Canonical is doing for their fledgling OS.
