no one has 2.3.3 yet :-(

Wow, great to see some early practical demo work! Gives me hope that NFC might not be so useless in the near term after all.
Thanks! ...Now I just have to wait for 2.3.3. >.>

wow! thank you!
time to play with it
darn that sucks, it wont let me install it because of the version

Sorry we made you guys wait, but we wanted to make sure it was in the market the second the OTA came out, which is any day now according to google.

Correct, we make hooks in the software so it only installs on phones with 2.3.3 and NFC. These requirements are needed to do NFC tag writing.

Great, so unless the OTA is on this weekend, maybe in the coming weeks
Can you tell us of other features on 2.3.3 other than the official ones? bugfixes and whatnot?

OTA is expected to happen any day now (I'm hearing Monday is the day, but don't know for sure).

Sounds good to me, don't know where I am going to be able to test it out though, not much nfc stuff on the go in the UK lol

Yubikeys are quite neat, fairly inexpensive, USB security tokens. They happen to have a MiFare classic NFC chip built in too. Fairly easy to get hold of across Europe if you want to experiment.

Check you WWW.Laks.com too. They sell a NFC watch.

ok so its clear that 'some' I9023's have 2.3.3 pre-loaded. its also clear that NXP guys have it, coz well they made the chip in the nexus (right?) and they cant test it without it. there's apparently some BT profiles also coming with 2.3.3 (file transfer, etc). can anyone confirm this?
I wonder what the hold up is.

I now have 2.3.3 but it still won't let me install.

NFC TagWriter doesn't show in Android Market.
Can NXP investigate the problem?
Thanks.

Same for me. I just upgraded to 2.3.3 but I can't find the TagWriter app in the Market from my phone. If I go to https ://market.android.com/details?id=com.nxp.nfc.tagwriter on my PC, it won't let me push it to my Nexus S either as the device is grayed out.

Things like this are common when google updates a handset. They need to update the servers to allow the updated devices to access apps. some other apps will be missing to like the official Paypal app.
Have to wait.
Seen this on another thread somewhere the other day.

For those of us who manually installed the update early is there any chance of NXP posting up a direct link to the apk? Not sure if that will work but I dont see why not

I'm starting to think this is Vapor Ware, or maybe Malware, they hyped the app, then seemed to falloff the face of the earth. Anyone try to install the app and see any weird things on the phone after?
Not saying I have, just asking if anyone has.

Asking for login/pass with internet permissions will be suspicious to many users, especially when it's unnecessary for what you're doing.

Looks nice, though as ZanshinG1 pointed out, Account Manager would be a much better way of using the Google account.

Better than Newsr? How does it compare?
I quite like the look of this, but I'm really loathe to buy a Reader app when it's only a matter of time until Google themselves release one that's optimized for tablets. I haven't bought Newsr for the same reason.
If you release an ad supported version then I'd jump all over it.

Maybe we will release an ad version. But we would rather not bloat the interface with ads. I dont think google will release a good reader app for tablets, the browser one is no good and the one for phones isnt really great either in my opinion. Thats why we thought of doing one that looks the way we want for our selves..

As it works now, the news wont get marked as read. When you sync it purges the news and downloads new news. So you can decide, tell us how you want it and we will make it work like that.
Newsr is a small investment and very good. Actively developed. Even if Google releases its own Reader app that you prefer, you will have gotten your money's worth. What I really want is a scrollable Reader widget which allows me to select which feed or label I want in the widget.
I like the look of this Honey Reader. When it sorts out the login Account Manager issue, I'll give it a whirl. Price is fair, too. I think people forget they can still do 15 minute try and return for no cost if they want. It's important that we support a development community for Droid if we want it to become as robust as Apple's.
Edit: just realized the account manager issue is resolved. Off to try this now.

Android 4.2 Built In Security Protection

I was just reading at the below link about Android 4.2's new built in security protection. This was one feature that I didn't see mentioned anywhere when talking about what's new in 4.2. Thought I would pass along the information. Peace.

Ah I read to quickly the feature seems to be optional.
Believe it or not there is malware scanning since Gingerbread, when you installed CM7 and logged into market the first time it display a list of apps, one of it is malware scanner although it wasn't needed if you market app was a certain version, not sure how effective it really was. I guess this is an evolution of it.

I think we could still install applications as long as we continue to check the box for installing from unknown sources. Not 100% sure though.
Its optional , more for regular users that don't understand the dangers of linked apps from a Google search rather then for us more in the know users.
Would nit hurt to keep it on then turn it off when installing a app that's not on the play store.
I think its a good image move due to all the bad press android gets about so called mal ware.

Can't believe we were anxiously awaiting this..

Android 4.2 doesn't even seem well thought out, let alone designed. Is Google playing the Apple game, tying us into their universe and making us take whatever the deliver?
Do they even care how many apps won't work or have to have multiple purchases to support their multi-user "security"? Should have just left the multi-user thing to 3rd party devs. They fail on this, IMO.

Google doesn't care.. Remember when 4.1.1 broke a bunch of paid apps by sticking them in the asec folder which wasn't mounted at startup? So since it wasn't mounted Android never saw the apps during boot and paid keyboards and widgets disappeared after a reboot. MONTHS went by before it was addressed. Meanwhile developers of those paid apps had angry customers and money lost because of Google
This will be the same song and dance.. Google is getting very sloppy with development and communication with developers pre-release seems to not exist.
I love it.

I suppose YMMV, but I love 4.2. Smoother than 4.1, and nice features. The only thing that really seems half-assed is the multiuser support.
What is your problem with multi-user? For me and my daughter it is working great - could not be better.
I did add my account to her user ID Play store so she could see the apps we own and install the link.
Performance is good - all our preferences and accounts are separated - and I really can't think of any other features I would want.

I haven't played with multi-user yet, can you add the account just for the play store and not have someone access the gmail account associated with it?
That's my gripe, I want to be able to for ex, have my nephew play with my tablet and all the games etc, but don't want him to access to my gmail etc. I thought this was perfect for that but then read about the app issue. Also, I assume there is no type of limited user, in that a secondary account can still uninstall apps, but at least they can't delete files from the other users home dir.
Yes - my account is just added to my daughter's play store. Open play store and look at add account option.
Works perfectly to give her access to the apps we share.
NO shared Gmail.
Forgot something important:
When you add a second account to play store, you are given a bunch of items you can synch, like contacts.
Uncheck them all!

Stick mount wasn't a feature of 4.1. It was hacked in which is why you had to be rooted and use an app. You'll get USB support again. Multiuser support screwed with the storage. That's all.
New tweaks are a little rough around the edges but will be smoothed out soon enough. Give it time, damn guys. I personally think its no better or worse then 4.1.2. We just have a few new toys now.

Sure, I kinda miss the bells & whistles I had on Codename Android, and I'll definitely check out any forthcoming 4.2 updates, but scrosler's stock, rooted, deodexed ROM is far & away the smoothest, quickest ROM I've used on any Android device. Stock kernel, no tweaks, plain vanilla is for me for now. Way better Google experience. OK, I sideloaded the AOSP browser for Flash, but that's it. Chrome is much more responsive on 4.2 than 4.1.2 - Everything is noticeably quicker - I even detect better wireless response. Your results may vary, but I'm not going back!

I tried NOT to update the system, but why the hell did they keep forcing it when we obvoiusly do not want it? And probably, they must have known that it will broke a lot of things...
Just to explain: for me, there was a message with three buttons: upgrade, more info (which leads to seme text and bigger "upgrade" button and "later", but that "later" means only "ask at next screen unlock" which made the tablet realy hard to use. So, what choice have I had?

Final Word on Nexus 4 and NFC Tags Compatibility

I'm the owner of AndyTags.com and my sole business is selling NFC Tags so you can imagine how thrilled I was when a customer contacted me shortly after the Nexus 4 came out to let me know his tags didn't work with his phone. To make things even more fun, a few days later another customer contacted me to say he had just gotten the Nexus 4 and was worried that his tags wouldn't work, but they did. So I began a lot of research, and along with a fellow Android fan who owns a Nexus 4 conducted extensive testing to get the final word on compatibility. There's a lot of confusing info out there so I thought I'd share these facts with you guys to make it simple so you could buy the correct NFC Tags for your new groovy Nexus 4.
The Nexus 4 & 10 are NOT compatible with Mifare Classic tags because Mifare Classic tags do NOT adhere to the NFC Forum's Standards. They can not write to the tags nor can they read information that someone else has written to the tags. However, they can detect the UID Code (kinda like a UPC code) of a tag which is unique to every tag. So, if you use an app like NFC ReTag or NFC Task Launcher which has the ability to just detect a tag and read it's UID code, and then launch settings/profiles/etc then you can still use Mifare Classic tags with the Nexus 4 & 10. This is why some people keep saying they are compatible. Just remember, technically they are NOT compatible - the phone can just read the UID code off of the tag.
What kind of tags DO work with the Nexus 4 & 10? Any tags that do adhere to the NFC Forum's standards. The most popular of which is the NTAG203. Unlike the 1K Mifare Classic which has 700 bytes of usable memory and is fairly inexpensive, the NTAG203 tags have about 140 bytes of usable memory and are slightly more expensive in general. However, 140 bytes is plenty of memory for most settings/tasks launching NFC Apps. Many apps, such as NFC Smart Q, allow you to create tasks and see how much memory is needed even without having tags so you can do that before ordering tags to make sure it's enough. The only things that it might not be enough for are vCards or if for some reason you want to program a really long text string to a tag (like more than 130 characters); but since most of us want to use tags to automate things, 140 bytes is enough for that.
What problems might you encounter using Mifare Classic tags to trigger events using the tag's UID? If you only use one app that detects a "blank" tag (Mifare Classic's are seen as blank by the Nexus 4/10) and read's its UID code and triggers a set of rules/settings/tasks based on that then you shouldn't have any problems at all! However, if you have more than one app that detects blank tags, then anytime you tap a Mifare Classic tag, you'll get a pop-up box asking you which app you want to use to execute the action which defeats the purpose of automation.
What is the deal anyway? Why don't the Mifare Classic tags work with the Nexus 4/10 like they do with all other Android phones? Basically, NXP is one of the leading manufacturers of NFC products. They not only manufactured the NFC hardware built into pretty much every Android phone out there up to this point, but also manufactured most of the popular NFC Tags in use. At some point they designed the Mifare Classic NFC Chips and designed them specifically to be compatible with their NXP hardware, but did not design them according to the NFC Forum standards which meant they wouldn't necessarily be compatible with all NFC hardware by other companies. Since pretty much all Android phones used the NXP NFC hardware, this wasn't really an issue and still isn't for most people. However, either Google, LG, Samsung or all three decided to use another company's (Broadcom) hardware in the Nexus 4/10. While any NFC Tags made by any company that adhere to the NFC Forum's protocols will work fine, because the Mifare Classic does not meet those criteria it is not compatible with the Nexus 4/10.
Great info. Thanks.
The kind of post intended to be on xda. Great information and very helpful!

Thanks for this. Just bought some more tags to replace the old mifare.
Excellent post, and information! Thank you!
Hopefully this will push the industry towards fully NFC standards compliant tags, rather than Mifare classic.

Thanks - This is terrific information. I already have a Nexus 7 and a nexus 4 is on the way.
Have few questions. Would appreciate your inputs:
1) Do you ship to international addresses? What do you charge for the shipping?
2) Will be using the NFC tags for lots of automation - for ex: turning off WiFi while leaving, enabling BT when getting in the car etc. Are these functions pre-programmed in tags you sell?
3) If I want to customize functionality, what kind of hardware would I additionally require?
4) Do you sell blank NFC tags so that I can program tags as I wish?
5) Costs - how much per tag and how much for the NFC reader / writer?
I haven't visited your site yet (as It's blocked at work), so apologies if this information is already available on the site.
,
your nexus 4 will be your nfc reader/writer, no additional hardware required. There are apps to program these tags

Awesome. Thanks!
managed to browse through the site as well, and got most of the information I wanted.
...now, If my nexus 4 came along...
If I want to place a tag on my router so that guests coming over dont need to ask for the password, will the native NFC app on their phone be able to read the data or do they need a specific app? If their phone will automatically read the tag, how will it be displayed on the device?
I have an n4.
Is there a way to make a tag that any android phone using 4.xxx (I.e. gs3, gn2, n4, gnex) do a check in with Facebook etc?
I bought a few tektiles to play with, but obviously can't write then properly.
Is 140 bytes enough to write a check in on Facebook command?

I wonder about security. Say you make a tag for your office, don't lock it and while you are gone someone wants to rewrite the tag to steal your information is this possible? If so is there any way to tell if your tag has been rewritten without reading the tag before using it? Can you read the tag before using it? Do any tags allow security like requiring a pin number to write to them?

It can't write them, period. This shouldn't even be a discussion, it's not capable of reading or writing classics. It wasn't updated in 4.2.1 to support classics.
You *can* pull a UUID from a classic tag. However you cannot write to the physical tag or read regardless if the tag is blank or already formatted NDEF.
I couldn't write to them either until 4.2.1 was released. But all i own is 10 mifare 1k classics and all but one was blank prior to owning the n4. I've written to 4 others since that time using NFC task launcher.

I couldn't write to them either until 4.2.1 was released. But all i own is 10 mifare 1k classics and all but one was blank prior to owning the n4. I've written to 4 others since that time using NFC task launcher.

Duuuuude.... what the heck is it doing then? You think I'm lying about this? What possible reason would i have to do that?
Edit: also if you look at the ota package for 4.2.1 you'll see that a couple of NFC related packages and driver files were edited. I haven't bothered to look at the source on git but I'm fairly sure that was the mod they made.

Developers: any links to best practices for Gear development?

Okay, new to this. Started up a gear yesterday and I'm impressed. Now I want to go further... (already bored lol). Any links to docs on how to develop for this thing. I already know that this it is standard Android and that one can write standalone apps the usual way for this thing. What I'm interested in is how the communication model works with companion apps on the phone. I suspect it will be done by running services on the phone, but how can one interact with those services via a Bluetooth connection. Or is it event driven?
I'm really surprised that Samsung hasn't publiced anything about this on their site? What? Don't they like developers to jump on the bandwagon?
Best advice is to read this forum you will learn all there is to know

So you think they work with special APIs? Or just the standard APIs? I saw there were already some interesting apps on the Samsung market like for example Zine. It has a controller architecture. On the Gear side you get headlines pushed and by tapping on a headline the Zine app is opened with the corresponding article. Can this can be done with standard Android APIs or do we need a special APIs for that. I can imagine that this can be done with the standard event model.
@lucf I did, couldn't find anything interesting wrt this topic. If you stumble upon some good posts let me know! Thx
Appears that Samsung kept it 'invite-only' for now:

Crap, so it does work with proprietary APIs? Right, might return this thing and wait till it is open for development, cheaper and will have more apps. They should have written that on the box. With their crap apps.

"We need to make sure we're ready to go big."
Thats a quote from the article, they will be released. Although not just yet..
they never said they will release the sdk to the public, did they? so please stop making false claims.
samsung might as well decide that they are not ready to go big with this generation (lack of wifi, poor software etc). what then?

It's definitely a remarkable manoeuvre. Another remarkable thing is that everything is kept in the Samsung app store. It's not a secret that Samsung has big ambitions. Maybe they are trying to build their own ecosystem in the Android ecosystem. Maybe they gonna lock the APIs in some kind of Samsung Appstore service. Meh .. let's hope Google comes up with a watch soon and an addition to the Android framework for smart watches.
I recently tried to release an app to the Samsung store specifically for the gear but it was rejected for "other" reasons...
Seems like the public are just unknowing beta testers of a half-arsed device by Samsung.

Really? What did you try to submit? A simple standalone app that only runs on the gear?

Tried to release my Calculator app that only runs on the Gear. I've since emailed back asking what "other" reasons they are talking about.
Just speculation on my part --
I have a feeling that Samsung is simply testing waters with this initial release of Gear. They are very serious about it, but they also know that it's not entirely polished product. They wanted to be first to market.
I think the 2rev of Gear might have some radical changes. They could probably build it on top of Kitkat (optimized for low memory devices?) and some new low energy communication protocols. Probably they will then open the APIs for all devs. Maybe we will also see some of the curved screen goodness!
But it's for sure they will never make the Gear compatible with all Android by default -- doesn't make a good business sense. Google will obviously try to make their smartwatch compatible with all Android, and that makes perfect business sense for google.

are you the guy who made it? nice. i sideloaded it into my Gear. works flawlessly, althought I would like to see some colored theme like numbers in one color, functions in other. 5 stars from me! super lite too!
Thanks...The coloured buttons are on the way...
