Improved Wallpaper template, now with native resolution. - Xoom Themes and Apps

So I was kind of wondering why the native horizontal resolution of our screen is larger then my original template. I started playing around with the ddms.bat in the SDK and sure enough the native resolution of the screen capture was 1280 horizontal. So I knew my original template was wrong and this explains the small amount of blurriness when the wallpaper is applied.
After a bit more playing in photoshop with the screen caps from ddms and this lovely aspect ration tool, I give you all the proper Xoom Wallpaper template. Same as last time the PSD is attached in the zip file below.

thank you for this! I am starting on some new wallpapers, and this will help greatly! Now I just need a DEV to make a small app (tablet only) for the wallpapers.

I gave up on looking for the "perfect" templates because in the end all you are doing is producing an image that looks good ONLY in landscape or ONLY in portrait.
You should include what the images are going to look like in both modes, just for brevity.

Of course this is not finished, but I wanted to check on size and see how well it fits. The template turned out perfect. Snug as a bug.

I slapped this together in a few minutes today, if you guys want, I can up the PSD file too.

so i'm kind of a newb on this template. If our image fits the center section it will look fine on the xoom?

any way to get a template of the lockscreen? so we know where the unlock circle is?

thanks! i've been looking for this template.

Search the forum, its been posted. IF you want to do it yourself, just take a screen shot of the device when the lockscreen is up, fit it into the template and your good to go.

This is amazing how difficult this is to create or use a simple background for Xoom. A simple thing turned into a development effort !

Thats not really true. This would be the same issue on ANY android device it was used in landscape mode. The problem is that the Wallpaper crop tool is still setup for portrait use, thus we need a guide to make sure what we want visible shows correctly.
What I would really like to do is edit the crop tool to add in 4 additional guides that would show what portion of the image will show on the desktop. It would not be hard to do if I know what to edit.

xoom from Moto
I understand that. But what I do not get is releasing this OS for Xoom with so many quirks. I have worked in Android for phones for a couple years. I have worked with Moto in the past, and the combo Moto/Android is not a good combo on tablet. Moto still does not get the consumer.
Just my opinion. I like the xoom and that is why I am a bit frustrated. It was a chance to regain a bit of market share. But for a consumer iPAD(which I also have) the xoom is way too problematic.

Ok so I don't have photoshop but when I used this template with gimp...my images were still not fitting the screen properly
Just to explain what this does:
- The image portion of the wallpaper (almost) fits the screen perfectly.
- The top black bar only appears when in app drawer. That's why I a have "Applications" labeled there, so it appears in the background.
- The bottom black bar appears when in "+" or widgets view, which is the reason why I labeled it "Add-ons"
- The white all-around bar is the section that won't show up at all when using XoomWallpaper_2.zip
So here is a "template" I made in GIMP. I attached both the .xcf for GIMP and also the actual .png wallpaper for those who want to try it to see what it does.
EDIT: XoomWallpaper.zip is for larger images (eg. 1892x903) and XoomWallpaper_2.zip is for smaller images (eg. 1132x540)
PS: I use "wallpaper set and save" to set my wallpapers. So I don't need to crop the image.

That works if you care about changing what you see in the App Drawer. If you only care about what you see on home screens, a much easier way for the average user is to just download Desktop Visualizer from the Market. Combined with Launcher Pro for your dock, you are limited only by the PNG images you can find or make.
It depends on how far you need to take it.

That's why we're here
Actually I am interested in changing the app drawer icons. And though much appreciated, the above post to the directions seems like a long way to go to achieve this.
Is there an easier way? I actually bought an icon theme for ADW.launcher and I love the home screen icons, but for some reason the developer made the drawer icons completely different and I hate them. I have found some icons that I like, that match the home screen icons.
Surely there must be a way to change all the icons at once instead of the above directions.
Thanks in advance for any responses.

I love that dude's set up.
Mine is minimal and simple using a black back screen with very clean and small things on the main page.
I'd like to mix it up and try something different.
For reference, here's mine:
That's Launcher Pro with Desktop Visualizer. DV just lets you make a widget that is an app button for any app with any PNG image you want for the icon. I thanked you, because I appreciate the reply and posting up a link for me, but it's the images that I'm most interested in.
I'm going to search that thread to see where it takes me, but I wish there were just a theme I could bounce onto my phone with that type of layout pre-done.
I know that I'm going to get into it, not be able to make it as nice, not like the end result, and then not be able to get my current screen back to this way either.
Update: Found exactly what I was looking for and I know how to use it due to plenty of previous fooling around with Desktop Visualizer. Now I just need to find some time to go at it.

Xoom Wallpaper Template

THIS TEMPLATE IS NOT CORRECT!!!
Please use the template in the following thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=993596
Ok so I increased the original template by 50% and created another PSD for those that want to use higher resolution images.
The new visible resolution for each desktop is 1764x1028 and the overall image resolution is 2616x1920.
It should be noted that the desktop area is NOT in the center of the image as the bottom status bar pushes it up a bit.
thanks for this. The wallpaper isn't the same when honeycomb only shows a portion of the wallpaper

No problem!
I am not really sure if its really anything different then other Android versions. Its really just that Honeycomb is meant to be used in landscape and I dont think that the crop tool has been redesigned to compensate for that.
My other wallpapers on my Nexus S, Vibrant and G1 all look chopped when the phone is rotated to landscape as apposed to portrait. Its still odd that the centered resolution for each desktop is lower then the native resolution of the screen in both dimensions. Its making me wonder if the screen really is 1280x800 native resolution.
Either way the template above works and keeps things centered for us.
Awesome! Thanks, works perfectly so far.

Dumb question for you....do you select green layer and resize the image within the template to that and save the whole thing, or do you resize it to the green area and then create another file?
Think I figured it out

If you are using the large template then the Green area in the center is the area of the wallpaper that is visible on the default center desktop. The red areas to its side are what you will see if you scroll to the desktops left or right of center.
If you are using the colors only to center your images, then hold down CTRL+; to bring up the guides, which will make it easier for you.

Dude, those are awesome!!
I would love one with Twitter (Plume), Browser, Music, Market, Root Explorer, Phone, Camera on the main screen (since I lock my wallpaper). I think I am going to try the free alt to photoshop and see if I can learn how to do this.... trying to make it look like yours.
The Vibrant has a super amoled screen, so the more black the better... but what I loved were how crisp the icons were that you used, and the shadow... which REALLY helps the look.
Very jealous.... I need to learn!
UN F%#%$# BELIEVABLE !!!
Genius Genius Genius way of customizing homescreen icons. Rockin this now!!!
I tried several times to download the transparent icon but get a blank screen all the time. Tried it from my vibrant haven't tried from my computer. But I would think I shouldn't have problems from phone thoe. Anybody else having this problem? Tried with stock browser and dolphin hd, same results.

What do you mean by blank screen? You should just be able to right click save as.
And not wanting this to sound snarky or anything, but because it's transparent, the blank screen makes sense.
Something I put together real quick, needs better spacing with the icons.

Anyway, I'm sure that a lot of people are wondering how to make these awesome icon backgrounds, so I thought that I would try and make a quick tutorial in Adobe Photoshop CS5 about giving your icons a shadow to make them look more 3D and everything.
Anyway stay tuned - www.twitter.com/jordanfritzsche and I should be post a video tutorial about this in the next day or two.

aka, please be nice and don't slam it too harshly.
It's too busy, I need to add some texture/color, but not sure what to do... I was JUST about to google how to add shadows! Any help is appreciated man!
I use a 5x5 desktop and have the labels hidden in ADW settings. The icons are exactly where they should be to press. I also lock my screen, that is why the black is there on the left/right... I suppose I should have just used a 480x800 background and then I wouldn't have had to guess so much on where to put the icons, right?? Still learning....

Believe it or not, its pretty easy.
So I'll give some quick directions that you can play around with however you'd like. So I use CS5 but I'm pretty sure it is the same process, however I'm not sure about Photoshop Elements.
1. Ok so you may have done it differently but I imagine that each of the icons is, or was, a layer at one point. If not, re-create it in a separate piece copy and paste it how you'd like it and you are ready to go.
2. So once the icon is its only layer go to the layer panel on the right and right click on the layer.
3. Select Blending Options
4. Play around with each option to the left. You can simply select the check box and the default characteristics for that option will be applied to your image layer.
5. If you select the whole bar on the left, for example Drop Shadow, it'll highlight blue. Then you can tweek the drop shadow, the length of it, the opaque-ness of it, which direction the shadow comes from, etc.
Play around with probably just the top five options on the left (Drop Shadow - Bevel & Emboss) Those will effect the depth of the image.
If you need more help I will do what I can, just ask

Cool Wallpapers (Me messing around in Photoshop)

Hello fellow XDA'ers, I have started to play around with Photoshop and basically decided to create some simple yet beautiful wallpapers that will go great for any Android Device. I will try my best to have a 480 by 800 Resolution and if ever the images are bigger, you can simply crop them and personalize the style.
I posted my first Wallpaper on the Simple XDA Wallpapers thread and a few people took a liking to it, so I thought why not create my own thread where I can post some new wallpapers that I make as a hobby. So without further a due, we begin!
P.S. Hope you like them. I'll try to post a new one everyday
BTW, anyone is free to post their own Wallpapers
AND If you like my work, Press the Thanks Button!
Quick Note:
I do not make wallpapers from scratch! I use free wallpapers from the web, and use Photoshop tools to edit them into what I would like it to look like, so a lot of credit goes to the actual creators, All Right Reserved!
Number One:
I used the Galaxy Nexus' Phase Beam live wallpaper screenshot and an abstract picture of boxes. Tweaked a little bit here and there, added the caption using the Droid Font and voila!

Number Three:
This one contains some WoW love! Basically took the For The Horde emblem and placed Andy in the center. Applied a couple of effects here and there. Enjoy!
Number Four:
This wallpaper was made using a customized Andy from Androidstickers.com. After that I looked for a Metallic textured background, duplicated it to fill the whole 480x800, then applied some sharpening and other goodies. Enjoy!
Dark XDA
Number Five:
I really enjoyed doing this one and up to date it is the most "complicated" as it involved quite a lot of tools. Firstly, I got hold of some HD Galaxy Nexus Wallpapers, then created a new GN Wallpaper. From there I, applied some Abstract Art and layered the colors on top. After that, I applied a couple of effects, put many Bots and done! I have created the Android Army @ XDA Developers
Hope you like it! If you do, say thanks

[2.1+] Widget Maker - create widgets out of other widgets

MOD EDIT: links removed
Widget Maker
Widget Maker is a unique application which allows users to create panels - superwidgets as we like to call them - comprised of other widgets installed
on your device. You can fine tune the position of many elements and their alignment to fit more stuff on your screens in a neater arrangement.
If you use our awesome Meta Widget, this app will also help you correctly create panels with lots of complex widget elements like tables or squeeze a
larger number of comic strips into the confines of your home screen.
Please note that some widgets are not fully supported, including a number of stock Google ones.
The DEMO application will function for 7 days, after which time you will be prompted to purchase the KEY if you want to continue viewing your panels.
INSTRUCTIONS - to get started, simply open the app, create a new panel and add new widgets into it by pressing the + sign in the lower left corner.
Once a widget has been added you can move it around the grid much as you would on your home screen.
NOTE - once you have saved a panel, it can be added as a widget through the widget picker. On some Android versions, you may have to manually
stretch the widget once it has been added.

Outstanding. Pro version of this and meta-widget bought without a moment's hesitation. 5 star review incoming.

This is quite amazing! Will there be an ability added to rotate the Widgets within the panel instead of just resizing and moving them?

Can make for some outstanding widget layouts. Lightning launcher supports such widget rotations. It would be great to see it added.

Ill have a look later... but it sounds superlative.
Here is a quick panel made for weather, i just made it fast, anyway it could be more beautiful and useful, but i didn't had any ideas. Anyway i just want to say a few things:
1.What it's that little red exclamation present near widgets?
2.Sometimes selecting simple text or images, they show up fine in meta widget, but fail to appear in widget maker(panel).
3.Panel counter(in name) doesn't decrease if you remove panel.
I would make a video tutorial too, bit later. Nice work ftg!

I will look into it first thing!
The idea is interesting, I was thinking of making this long time ago, but I was waiting to see an implementation of it. Which yours is very poor. It has terrible results when switching portrait-landscape, does not coop well with decreased DPI. It's just not pro and well thought out. It's just so poor.
I see... it seems you have written the same thing about Meta as well. Guess you'll just have to make your own like you planned. Or give some contructibe feedback instead of trolling like a tool knowitall.
0.9.2.1
Fixed panel naming when creating new widgets
Fixed alignment issues of widgets with no padding
Fixed cell size not sticking under some conditions
Anything to report?
Trying to make a widget of Penny Arcades comics (latest as the widget) but it shows up as blank unless I long press on it and move it around and it shows it there. Kind of strange.
Hi. Im not sure what it could be. Please post a link to the strip you want. I use go comics which work perfectly...

Hey speaking of comics...
I have a widget of the current XKCD comic. Is there a way to get the ALT Text to show?
Thanks
I'm not sure, maybe, I'll have a look over the weekend.
