[Q] Where's the B&N Update? - Nook Color General

Anybody seen the announced B&N update which was supposed to come in mid-April?
Not that I'm anxious or anything!

You beat me to it. I was about to post the same thing. I am praying that it fixes the screen and gives us more touches. Two is just not enough for gaming. Give me 3-4 at least.

While that would be nice, i would not count on it.
keep in mind, any B&N update will be for their functionality, and not ours. Nothing i have seen on THEIR software facilitates the need for 3+ touches, so thy won't waste time implementing it.
As it is, i wonder if we are even placing too much on the update in terms of code base. I don't believe they ever updated their code release to be in line with the last two updates, so we may not want to expect it this time either....

BN never said mid-April. Their press release said "spring" which could be anytime between now and May 21.
HSN said mid-April. You might ask some of the folks in this thread who are convinced it's coming.

When the next update comes, it will still be eclair (not froyo) with the BN app store. BN is only supporting Google Android SDK Platform 2.1 API 7.

You're probably right. IN fact, you're most likely right. Part of me is very tempted to buy the Xoom just because it has more touches. Can't bring myself to part with the money though.

Nah hold out just a bit more man, plenty of similar priced tablets coming out this year with a better size to them (closer to the nook's size).

I got my eye on one of these puppies:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/22/samsung-galaxy-tab-8-9-and-new-galaxy-tab-10-1-thinner-than-the/
Hopefully, Samsung will price them competitively.

Updated: Samsung came clean with the pricing at its press conference this morning. The WiFi 10.1 will hit on June 8th -- the 16GB version will cost you $499 and the 32GB $599. The 8.9 is $469 and $569 for 16GB and 32GB, respectively.
Right from the page you linked.
I too like the 8.9, but the price and Touch software could be a deal breaker for me. Need to see something a bit more competitive to my nook color before I bite the bullet again.
Maybe if I see CM7-8 on it by the time it goes down in price ;p

Looking at the material cost for 7" and 10" tablets (NC and iPad), future tablets will all be priced at around $200 and $500 with IPS screens. Any tablets priced less than $200 (7") or $500 (10") will be scrimping on some aspects - most likely the display.
By waiting, the improvement you see in tablets with IPS screen is performance or memory.

Then someone needs to update store reps. They've been touting an "android 2.2" (never heard em say froyo) in "mid month."

I thought they were going to include Flash support. If so, wouldn't they need 2.2 (froyo) or higher?

[Q] Any idea when Nook Color II will appear?

I am really close to buying a Nook Color, but with my luck an updated model will be available shortly after. I would be willing to wait a couple of months if a new one was on the horizon.
Then again, I could get one now, then give it to my g/f when a new one comes out.
i doubt it, ive heard nothing about a new model, in fact why would they release a new one? this one does everything they would want the device to do. maybe they would do something about the handful of design flaws.. but it does not appear to have created enough buzz to warrant a redesign. Not to mention the fact that this one is rather new to the market.
I wouldn't expect a nook color 2 for some time, if at all. B&N is hurting pretty bad as a company (read: hemorrhaging money). I know they struck gold Jerry with the original nook (~30% market share for e-readers), but that still doesn't change the fact that B&N can't close stores fast enough.
B&N put out an ultra-fancy e-reader, one that is vastly over-qualified for what they wanted it to do, so there's lots of room for them to grow into as they release updates. As far as we know, the nook color (hardware wise) can handle both Froyo and Gingerbread with ease, and by the looks of it HoneyComb as well. Also, it was about a year inbetween the two nooks being released, so I would count on almost 1.5-2 years before we start hearing rummors.
I say, get one while you have the cash.
Other plans
I'm pretty sure that B&N is going to shift their goals to building out their Development platform before planning new hardware. Besides, they aren't making their margin on these Nooks, but rather setting up a somewhat razor/refill market that will (hopefully) get people into stores and more interested in their eBooks.
They might NOT be on top of the stack right now, but I'd go to B&N before setting foot in a Borders...

I'm sorry but by this logic... why buy anything tech based? I don't need to think about buying the Iphone 4, I know that 5 will be out soon. Shortly after that 6, so on and so forth.
You need to read less what HACKERS are doing, and more what people SHOULD be doing with a Nookcolor. In the E-Reader market, the nookcolor is the top of the line model. When you look at other E-Readers many people rather have E-Ink (or its at least a common complaint), Currently a real "Nook Color" base doesn't exist. A lot of the features are not fully formed, and completely designed. Many Magazines, do not appear on the market. Even a lot of the actual "E-Reader" aspects are not all there, but lets move past this.
For there to be a "NookColor 2" there needs to be a reason to justify a better version. Unlike Apple B&N cant really afford to do an upgrade like the 3g to 3gs. The screen is very high grade, theres no real lag reading, the E-Reader programs are way better than the default one, backlit, color, etc. The most an upgrade would have would be more a redesign, theres nothing else it needs that it doesn't already have. Things like more memory would fall short, 5 gigs is more than enough for the core function, and buying a memory card is not that much of a hassle.
I agree, no upgrade coming this year. Feel free to buy!

Check out this link, it's a wiki for investers: http://www.wikinvest.com/stock/Barnes_&_Noble_(BKS)
Now go down to "business growth."
B&N is, for a lack of a better term, bleeding money at an unsustainable rate.
Hell, they lost over $40 Million in just the last half of 2010. That's more than they made in the entire year of 2010. And on top of that, they earned HALF of what they made in 2009. Their operating margin(% of the difference between cost and retail of products sold that can go towards profit, or return on sales) fell from 2.8% to 1.3%(BTW that's god-awfull)
Even with their sales increasing nearly by double digits quarter after quarter. They make so little(% wise) that the increase of sales is overshadowed by the increase of costs assosiated with selling more of something.
So, pretty much half of the company just breaks even. The other half either losses money, or losses LOTS of money.
Don't be surprised if B&N doesn't survive long enough to honor our 1yr warrenties.
The real question is. Who's going to buy them? And, will the nook product line survive the transfer of ownership?
Edit: added comment about increasing sales.

Actually, I am not the type of person to sit back and wait for the latest version to come out, unless it has been some time since the original came out. Also, even if a new version comes out it has to be a big enough change for me to buy it. For instance, I bought the first generation iPod Touch, but didn't spring for the subsequent Gen. 2 or 3 because they were only minor upgrades, in my opinion. But when Gen. 4 came out, I upgraded.
The Nook has been out since last fall, I believe, and I remember reading on some tech site (CNET, maybe?) that this spring a new Nook Color would appear with 3g. I would only get this, however, if the 3g was free like on the Kindle.
In any event, where would you guys be more likely to purchase a Nook Color -- at an online retailer, or go directly to your local B&N store?
Aww that is news is bad for BN...my three stores always have people in them and two of them I always have to wait in line...unless I am there at odd hours
If I can buy locally for almost the same price...I will always buy locally. Now if I could have obtained the nook for $200 online...you bet I would have gone online! I think most "e-reader" people would prefer to go to a physical store than buy online...but look at the success of the Kindle...
Another aspect my stores are pushing are the Nook Color classes or meeting to share tips and tricks and how toos on the NC. While these dont apply to me...I would imagine they would appeal to the mass users of the NC.

Aside from a stock 2.2, what i really hope for is a new kernel, that Dal and other devs can use to make CM7 and HC (when its out) even better...
Browsing is much faster on 2.2 as well. Good news!
If the B&N Forum administrator can be trusted, I suspect that what we'll see is a web browser running embedded Flash videos and some cook-books with embedded video demonstrations. Wouldn't surprise me to see Angry Birds or some such, also, when they talk about "all the other things the Nook Color can do."
I will say that it kinda rubs me the wrond way to see the Nook Color on HSN. I associate that show with overpriced Packard Bell's (and lets face it: Packard Bell were overpriced at any price) and $15.00, 10 Carat "genuine faux diamons."

does the fact they are selling the NC for 299 have anything to do with that?

Sorry, I'm new here, but Home Shopping has the nerve to charge $300, $50 more than every other store, for the Nook Color, and that $50 buys you a lousy 2 GB SD card with a bunch of free Gutenburg Project books??
I mean, I knew they have no shame, but.... WOW.
That might be the most expensive 2 GB SD card EVER.
I wonder if google apps will be available. I'd really have no need for rooting if only the basic applications were available through their market.

Well it says Email App... even iphone has Google apps, despite Jobs' feud with Google, so it seems likely that BN would also have google apps.
BTW, as some have mentioned, HSN will use the "$299" price as a starting point for saying "but only if you call now, you get it for" in order to make their actual price seem more like a deal.

Sadly, that isn't the case. The only devices that are shipping with GApps, are those that have a cellular radio (aka the phones, and some tablets). Non licensed devices (like ours, and others) do not ship with it (though it doesn't stop us from putting them on.

No, it's not. Bought a 2GB MicroSD when they first came out, and it ran a cool $180 (plus sales tax!) at the time, as they were exclusive through SanDisk to one cellphone carrier for a good few months (Verizon IIRC). Curse of the early adopter, saw them drop to sub-$100 just half a year later or so.

Yes, that's my point! They're a bunch of old classic literature that is <b>all</b> available for free via Project Gutenburg (33,000 titles and counting) and other venues.
If there's a single title there that you'd actually have to pay for, please let me know; I haven't checked all of them.
This is a rip-off. But it's a tangent; the point of the thread was about the B&N update. (See also the recent bad news about Honeycomb being withheld.)

by stock I mean stock-rooted...I was on stock for about the time it took me to charge the device

New Nook Color May 24th?

According to Engadget B&N (from SEC 8-K form) will be releasing a new Nook on May 24th. Anyone know anything you must tell me, I have to know!!!
Oh noes, not more Nook rumors!!! B&N is slowly turning to Apple.
Seriously, I haven't heard, but that means less than nothing.
when you file it with the Securities and Exchange Commission, rumor is really not the appropriate word.
This is just a guess, but I would bet it is a larger eReader similar to the Kindle DX. I mean really the Nook Color, for what it is designed for, is already hardware overkill, (I mean seriously...its an eReader regardless of what we are doing with it) so even IF its a new color model it will probably be less powerful than the current model to keep the price low.
Anyway...in summary...I'm thinking 10" Nook. Probably eInk.

I agree with this. I am sorry, but people, the nook color only really hit stores in November.. in no way is it ready for replacement.
Now, I CAN believe that the original nook could be getting a replacement. Not everyone want an LCD eReader, and the classic nook is old enough that it is a due for a replacement.
I'm pretty sure they just launched a new ad campaign for the current NC. It'd be odd to be coming out with an updated model at the moment.

Ditto
My Nook 3G isn't the greatest e-ink reader - good but not great. I'd swap it for a Sony reader if I had money to burn. I was wondering when they would release a new e-ink Nook.
Perhaps it might be a 3G Nook Color?
although I'm leaning towards it being a new e-ink version of the somewhat out-dated nook.
We shall all wait and see
Just about everyone has been selling the original nooks (e-ink version, new and refurbished) at seriously discounted prices over the last few months. I believe B&N has been trying to clear out their stock in preparation for a replacement to the original nook.

Absolutely. Sub $100 everywhere.
*maybe* we get a color e-ink Nook based on Mirasol tech or something. Would be great for comic books and kid's books. That's about the best we can expect.
I'm betting on a 10" NC.

B&N filed a form 8-K which states:
"In a meeting with investor analysts on May 4, 2011, Barnes & Noble, Inc. (the "Company") indicated it expects to make an announcement on May 24, 2011 regarding the launch of a new eReader device."
An announcement regarding a launch is not the same thing as a release of something new.
Most of you know much more of the technology behind this than I ever will, but from a business standpoint it's unlikely that this new eReader would be an upgrade to the NC. Based on what I do know, it's more than likely an upgrade to the Nook Classic with e-ink pearl at a lower price point.
Well since there is only a 14 day return policy and I bought mine last saturday, I guess I am taking mine back this weekend and will wait for the announcment.

Really...? You are really going to return a new, working device, on the possibility that they are replacing it, despite the fact that the device is barely 6 months old, has just received a major software update(froyo and new kernel), and still has no serious equal competition?
Or ignore the fact that the classic nook has been going on clearance all across the US, including online, and that it is the classic nook, not the color, that is due for replacement?
What a sad waste of good hardware..
If the 24 May release is not what I want I will re-buy the NC since I like it. But If the new device is better then I am stuck with an outdated device and $250 because of the 14 day policy. It is the cost of the company doing business, I am sure it will be one of their manufacture refurb units on ebay for $225 in a few days.

I know this sounds horrible but now I'm secretly hoping that the update is an unrootable NookColor that immediately replaces all existing stock. Good luck!
I don't see the big deal. The company makes the rules of 14 days. I play within their rules.

(Outdated) If a New Nook Color comes out May 24 will you trade up?

Just curious to see how many people would "trade-up" to the newer model *if* (very small chance I know) B&N announces tomorrow that they're releasing a faster and more full featured tablet/reader.
I'm of two minds about it, if it ends up being a new NC (which I doubt myself) that is better than the current NC, it'll probably cost $50-100 more, in which case why not just get one of the dedicated tablets out on the market? (Or wait for Amazon's quad core Hollywood tablet..)
What do you think?
I would wait for Hollywood, hell even Coyote. I don't really have money to just throw around myself, so even if they did release a newer Nook Color, I doubt it would be a big enough difference in performance or features to make me go buy it tomorrow.
In fact, with the possibility of Hollywood being only $450 at launch and from amazon (who you know is going to go out of their way to make sure they have plenty in stock) I may not even trade up to the Iconia or Transformer this fall like I had wanted to.
Which kind of sucks since the wife wants a Nook color now. (Was going to give her mine...)
Supposedly (PCMag article) Amazon "might" be pricing the 7-inch Coyote tablet a $349 and the 9.7-inch Hollywood tablet at $449 (assuming lowest storage price). If Amazon throws in free 3G for apps downloads I'm sold (doubt it though since their cloud computing mp3/streaming video would end up costing them a pretty penny with free 3G).

its a cheap tablet, only cost 169$, so cheap that it must have cut down many hardware inside it.
Very nice, I'm very pro supporting BN so if their new reader has decent battery life, I'll probably buy it over the kindle in the near future.
Engadget just posted that B&N are now selling the old Nooks for $99 on eBay.

Just saw this as well.
Still rocking the Incredible with the XDA Premium App.
And the new Nook is a $139 touch enabled eReader - so...no Color as many of us predicted.

The engadget article states 2 months on a charge.
here is the article about the new nook:
***.engadget.com/2011/05/24/barnes-and-noble-announces-new-nook/
Doesn't sound like it has a lot to recommend it compared to nc, but we can still spend a few days speculating if it will boot from SD card... perhaps there are some applications where a "paperback" android device would be useful, especially if the disaffected sell them lightly used in the $100 range.
Press release says nook color now $169 list. Time for a second one to play with!
http://news.cnet.com/8301-30685_3-20065678-264.html
EDIT: Went to the blog of the news conference and the reporter was wrong. NC is not lowered in list price! It is the 3g version of the old original nook that is $169. Bummer.

Correction, the original nook 3g is now 169. nook color is unchanged.
Touch screen e-ink? 80% less flashing (supposedly)? sd card? I'm sold. I wonder how long it takes to get it hacked and someone throw as a browser on there. e-ink touchscreen browser, even if just black and white, aounds very intriguing to me. Especially if it's better than the kindle's experimental browser.
this also assumes bn didn't take the hint from the first nc and locks the thing down like a bunker. Not to say there are some great devs out there but it would severley limit progress. This comming from a droid 2. Locked bootloaders =
I'd stay where i'm at right now. Working on saving money for a true tablet, but i like my NC as it is with HC now.
Why trade up? The Nook Color does everything I need it to do... IN COLOR. Running CM7 or phiremod is the icing on the cake...

Why such a strange release?

So who has theories on why this release has been limited to such a few sporadic outlets? I mean the Play Store I get since that is Google but why no other major electronics retailers? I would expect at least Best Buy and Fry's to be selling from the brick&mortar front and Buy.com, New Egg and Amazon from the online. Instead we have a few obscure online shops like B&H and some office supply stores? Game Stop seems to be the only one that kind of fits but even that isn't the first place I would think of when looking for new tablet.
Just a thought as we wait...
It's become fairly obvious to me that Google doesn't know what in the world it's doing.

Send it out to all retailers, but have retailers hold stock until launch day. Ship preorders 2 days before launch. Done.
Now the only thing that can unravel this is if some retailers don't hold their stock. That's what seems to be happening, not entirely Google's fault.
Google has no control whatsoever over the distribution since the Nexus 7 wasn't manufactured in-house (read: inside the Google premises) nor distributed by them. ASUS is the manufacturer and all Nexus 7 retail units were distributed through their own supply chain.
The Nexus Q, yes... It's a different story.
This is yet another instance where Apple make Google look like a bunch of rank amateurs. Honestly. I pre-ordered mine on June 29th from the Play Store, assuming that might amount to something!
Here's how google could have done this properly:
Announce that the launch date is a specific date. Let's say July 20th, not 2-3 weeks. Vagueness makes people speculate.
Next, Ship it out to UPS distribution centers and retailers and tell retailers to hold until the 20th. Part of the reason retailers are not following instructions is that anxious people keep bugging them and it's wasting warehouse space for an effectively undetermined amount of time, something that retailers also hate. On July 19th, give the go-ahead to UPS and retailers release on the 20th. Everybody is happy, because everything that was promised was delivered.
This shouldn't have been complicated at all. Pre-ordering with UPS and retailers isn't exactly new.
This should be in Q&A.. might get closed =P

Why even make such a reply? If you have an issue, use the report button.
I do disagree with your point. His question was asked in an open discussion format. Q&A in many device forums on XDA is more meant for support based questions.

This is not a question I need answered but a topic to provoke discussion on Google/Asus launch strategy. Thanks for your insightful post though
I don't know what's going in but I am a little annoyed that people who purchased from Gamestop and ebuyer are getting theirs and my play store pre order is still saying 1-2 weeks

I total agree that this would have made the launch smoother and easier for consumers. However, Google has many highly paid marketing and logistic professionals at their disposal. Is it just that they keep dropping the ball on Nexus launches or is this by design to artificially generate additional hype and anticipation? I'm wondering if it's some type of marketing strategy itself.
..still can't it out..
It creates buzz..
Since apparently no one can read or use the search function.

TLDR; Blame ASUS.
Maybe it just took them longer to link the devices to peoples accounts since other than storage size that is the only difference between buying it in retail and getting it from Google Play.
And I'm sure a big list of people cancelling their orders later to get over the limits of Google's horrible store didn't help because they would then have to undo the linking on those devices.

Yeah, quite frankly, I'm also annoyed. In fact, more than a little annoyed. Unless the Play store gives us some sort of reparation for getting screwed over like this, I'm never pre-ordering or buying from Play ever again. I think a free case is fair compensation for all of us who preordered from Play and got screwed over.
In fact, anyone have a link handy for Play's customer support/service email so I can write them a strongly worded letter? Their "Contact Us" page only has their phone number.

that's not a suffecient reason, all google had to do was have a street date implemented.
google is repeatedly terrible at hardware launches. how a multibillion dollar company is so bad at something when it's not their first time doing it is beyond me.

So what is your source that states that Google has no say what so ever in the marketing and release of the flagship product that bears there name? Please don't confuse giving your post no credibility with not being able to read.
Maybe you'd prefer the Apple model... people standing in line for a day or 2, running out on release day and no one able to activate their devices? This is Google's first outing for a branded tablet... give 'em a break. Trust me, it'll be worth the wait.
I preordered mine from GameStop and was told July 31 as the release date...extremely surprised to get it last Friday!

This is normal for Asus.
Heck, the Prime has been out for over 6 months, still cant find one in a retail outlet.
Hopefully it's not as bad and they start getting them out.. Wouldn't hold my breath though.
People will probably have to check nowinstock.net for months to track one down.
