I was trying to hold out for the bionic, but it looks like it will be at least late july & my old droid is almost dead.
What do you guys think will be released next??? Maybe the LG, then the droid X2, then the bionic? If the droid X2 is out by next month I may wait on it, but it's looking more like: April= Thunderbold, May=Charge, June= LG, July= DX2, August= Bionic finally. Just my own conclusion, but seems accurate so far........

First off, Dual-core obviously. Whether it's a Tegra 2 or TI OMAP4 is up in the air still - sources have confirmed both at different times, most recently though, a benchmark was cited as having a OMAP4. Either way, should be an improvement over its predecessors. Also, noted to be clocked at 1GHz. vs. 600MHz for the OG Droid, 1GHz for the Droid 2, and 1.2GHz for the Droid 2 Global.
Second, 4 inch screen size. A bit of an increase over the OG Droid and Droid 2. (3.7 in). The resolution is found to be a qHD screen - noted at 960x540 vs. the standard 800x480.
Third, larger keyboard - has 5 distinctive rows of buttons vs. the traditional 4 rows. The feat. here is that the numbers 1,2,3.. have been added independently of the Q,W,E,R,T,Y.. row. So no more having to press "ALT" in order to type a number with the keyboard.
Forth, Increase in memory, I believe cited to be at 768MB vs. 256 for the OG Droid and 512MB for the Droid 2, Droid 2 Global, etc.
Those are the biggest features of the new Droid 3 that I've found while keeping tabs on any updates. Anyone feel free to add more or speculate if needed.
If only the Droid 3 was going to be 4G. I would buy it in a heartbeat. The Bionic looks like it may not be out until later this summer, so if the Galaxy S II comes out with a 4G radio before then, I will be scooping that up.

Sooooo the new pics are sick. I wanted a SGSII but after the pics and specs today ill deal with the bootloader and use my nook for development bug. 4.5in screen and LTE. not to mention webtop and such. I'm a HUGE fan of omap and I'm so happy Motorola went back, Tegra never did it for me and there's no good Snapdragon on the horizon for big red and I have an aweful feeling our SGSII will be Tegra. 1gb of ram and 1080p... I'm sold!
I have a upgrade on 9/6... I'm really hoping thats the release time frame

Does anyone know if the new Bionic will have a pentile screen? I'm wavering between the HTC Sensation and waiting for the new Bionic, but I don't want a pentile screen. Do you think its inevitable to offset the battery consumption of the LTE network, or will we get lucky and avoid the pentile screen?

In addition, I'm questioning that it's 4.5". A quick test bringing it into Photoshop makes me think that it's a 4.3":
The smaller phone in the comparison picture (is that a Motorola Defy???) display dimensions (in image pixels)
184x352 = approx 397 diagonal = assuming the Defy is a 3.7" device, that makes the image scale about 108pixels per inch
The larger phone (Bionic) display dimensions:
253x385 = approx 460 diagonal, at our 108ppi, that makes the display approx 4.25" (about 4.3")

I used "MeasureIt", a plugin for Firefox, and did some math. Again assuming that is the "Defy" 3.7" next to the Bionic, I also came up with a 4.3" screen.
I am assuming this will come with the same LCD pentile screen that the Droid x2 came with. I haven't seen one in person, but I don't think they are as bad as some people make them out to be. I think it is a person to person thing.
Are you site its a defy? All the articles mention it as an Atrix. It does look alot like the Defy but it appears to have a FFC on the left side of the speaker and its missing the silver trim on the defy.

Anyone else notice the obvious chin on the bottom of the phone (where the microphone and Verizon logo are placed)? I've only really seen that chin on the Droid 1. They removed it on the Droid 2 and placed the microphone on the bottom, but then I remember reading that the Droid 3 will have it back on the front face of the phone to avoid microphone sound quality issues.
So could it be possible that this is actually a keyboarded phone? Maybe it's the Droid 3. I mean, we don't exactly have a wealth of information on either phone, and this picture's screen has proven to be smaller than we first expected.
I think the chin may be a design element they are using. Also the LTE radio might add some thickness to it

Yeah, on second glance, the "chin" actually looks like it's at the same level as the screen of the phone. I initially thought it looked like it might be lower than the phone and that it might be part of the slide-out keyboard layer of the phone. But no, alas, it looks like we're never going to see another good slider phone as long as we live.
Nobody has mentioned that it appears to have curved glass like the HTC Sensation?

Great phones like Evo 4G have been released and we're looking forward to devices like Samsung Galaxy S, Droid X.
Here's a list of reasons why I'm considering replacing my Nexus One:
Better screen because this could be the single most important part of the phone, like what Jobs said (larger screen, no multi-touch issue, Super AMOLED)
Front-facing camera for video calling
Nexus One can be sold at a good price today, especially in some areas in the world
Physical Keyboard (if there is an option with this all)
Why Samsung Galaxy S?
4.0" seems to be the most optimal size

I'm most compelled to get the Samsung Galaxy S, because of the price, screen, and availability in my area. EVO 4G is great, but it's CDMA and we don't have 4G here. Droid X is also great, but I don't have details about it's availability.
However, I'm not 100% sure about upgrading now because other phones, especially Samsungs, may not have big Android communities. Imagine the lack of CyanogenMod. Also, custom versions of Android like TouchWiz UI and MotoBlur usually suck. Some versions of Sense UI may be better than stock, but a guy like me is a sucker for stock Android.
What can you suggest?
I'd stick with the Nexus One until Googles next baby comes out.
This is the #1 hardware platform and will have the best community support for quite a while.
And don't forget, the GalaxyS is DivxHD Certified!!!
I'm really liking the DroidX too, the Dell Streak looks just a smidge too big (I've got big hands and really like the idea of a big screen, but not TOO big), and this X at ~4.4" might be in just the right spot!
The Galaxy S sounds cool from a spec perspective but I'm worried about the lack of support from Samsung. They've essentially shunned their phone user base in the past and I'd rather not go through that, especially since Gingerbread is going to be quite a big leap forward for Android.
Also, check out Engadget's preview of the Galaxy S. They have some concerns about the build quality. While the specs are great, and the UI is actually pretty nice; the questionable build quality and dubious manufacturer support history have left me in "wait and see" mode.
Next months DroidX (motorola) looks promising too.
I will give you this single warning. Do NOT get a Samsung phone. The phone is garbage, the support is worse than garbage. For example, the last Samsung phone that I had *never* got an update. It has a bug that it won't give an audible alert that the battery is low. Called TMo, they said it was Samsung's problem, Samsung says it's TMo's problem. Bottom line, I could get a refurb phone that they said would have the same issue since there was no firmware update.
because its a samsung, i would wait and see. the nexus will have the top end community support at least into the beginning of next year.

I agree with everyone else. The N1 will continue to have the greatest developer support and google support. I personally love my N1, I can customize pretty much anything. Even the keyboard can be changed to something more friendly. The screen is beautiful, it doesnt need to be a monitor. The contrast ratio the N1 screen cannot be compared to any screen. The EVO has a big screen but it cant compete with the colors that the N1 puts out.

At least it's smaller than the Evo or Droid X.
Samsung is going to have to demonstrate that they are committed to providing timely software updates for their phones before I would ever consider buying one. Their track record is horrible.
There is no phone out there I would rather have than my N1. I will be waiting 6 months for N2 with Go. Gingerbread.
For me nothing out there can touch the Nexus capabilities right now!

Super Amoled still hasn't been fully tested in real world.. regardless of what companies say there is potential for things to go horribly wrong..
Plus.. n1 is definitely get updates faster than samsung.

You can run divx on the Nexus One with the rockplayer apk, can you not?
I have the app, but I've yet to test it so I don't know how good it is.
Like a lot of people, I love the specs of the Samsung Galaxy S and its overall package, but I'm a little skeptic about Samsung Android phones after hearing the upgrade stories online.

i want the galaxy s as well due to the s-amoled.. but im sticking with the nexus mostly because of os updates (froyo)

I tested the Galaxy S a while ago. the screen is very beautiful. the difference of the viewing experience from Nexus One is very evident.
the screen may be the single most important piece of phone hardware, but like what you said, it's worth waiting a little longer for a better device from a better company with better commercial and community support.

From what I hear super LCDs are comparable to SUPER AMOLED screens.

Can you point me to these specs? I have heard that it has SLCD and the MSM8250 but have not been able to see this confirmed anywhere. I am getting the phone regardless since I passed on the HD2 and kept and Iphone 2.5g on TMO all this time. Either way I am looking forward to WP7.

SLCD are similar to Amoled but is better in terms of battery life. SLCD is good.
AMOLED v STFT
The difference between SAMOLED and SLCD is that high quality SLCD screens are sharper while SAMOLED screens have higher color saturation.
Compare the screen on the G2 and the Vibrant, text looks crisper on the SLCD on the G2, but the colors are more saturated (darker blacks, brighter colors) on the SAMOLED on the Vibrant.
It is because of the sub pixel layout of the SAMOLED display. Overall both work well.
the fact that they have the loudpseakers listed as mono already tells me thats wrong.... There's 2 stereo speakers on the device's top and bottom...
Plus slashgear already mentioned it was a regular TFT, and that the viewing angles match the HD2 to prove this(S-LCD has better viewing angles like IPS)

The reason the G2 looks sharper is also helped by the fact that its got a smaller screen.
If HTC's do have S-LCD screen, does that mean they also have the MSM chipset? People here who have emailed and asked HTC have been replied to saying it has the MSM chipset.... this is really frustrating because theres so many cross-information flying about lol. AHHHH!
The only "msm" chipset is in the g2, 7XXX, the HD7 is using the first gen QSD 8250 commonly misidentified as msm 8250. The second gen snap dragon is QSD 8255, currently ont he desire HD.
S-LCD has a better sunlight legibility, where as OLED, AMOLED and SAMOLED all have bad sunlight legibility.

I'd love it if it had some sort of metal element like the HD7's chrome bezel!
The brown-grey 'metallic' back is not enough... why don't samsung build 'em like HTC!
I'm going to go and check out the Omnia 7 tomorrow, but i'm worried the plastics won't be up to the HD7.
With the screens switched OFF and sitting on your desk the HD7 looks so so so much more BAWSS!

Really a shame, I was looking forward to this device. I may ultimately end up going with it still, but the Focus is awfully tempting now.
Is it just me or are engadget's reviews always showing this phone from an angle. When it is viewed directly (which is how any person would look at it normally) the blacks aren't nearly as gray as engadget portrays them.
I will still be getting this phone in a heartbeat and selling my AMOLED equipped Nexus one on launch day.

Many of us are probably due to replacing the N1. It's turning 2 years old, people love buying phones this season, and ICS-friendliness could be a factor.
The Galaxy Nexus is the default choice for many N1 owners, but the latest Nexus doesn't feel like the Nexus One before (a no brainer choice).
I mean, here are some advantages of the Galaxy S II over GNex:
Possible big price and availability advantage
Full RGB vs. Pentile
microSD card
more hand- and pocket-friendly dimensions and weight
8mp + 2mp vs. 5mp + 1.2mp cameras
ARM Mali-400 MP vs. PowerVR SGX540
Gorilla Glass vs. "Fortified Glass"
Due to current huge market share, GS2 has many available accessories and strong support (despite being new, they have almost as many threads in their xda subforum as what we have here for N1)
It gets more complicated. The GS2 may be an easy choice for some, but having hardware buttons can be a deal breaker. Having those physical buttons can make the device inferior/obsolete. Are the buttons that big of a deal?
Thoughts?
Surprisingly, it seems that the galaxy nexus's screen will render text better than the GS2 even with its pentile disadvantage, so I wouldn't consider that a negative. Obviously we'll have to see when the phones are in people's hands though.
I'm going with a galaxy nexus, mainly because google remembered one of the most important things from the N1-the trackball notification light. It's on the same place on the galaxy nexus as it was on the N1, though it's obviously missing the trackball

To be honest, all of my gripes with the nexus S were fixed with this-no more cheap plastic back, *hopefully* decent camera and video drivers, HDMI output, storage space (only somewhat though-no SD isn't ideal but 32gb is the max this would hold anyway), and a notification light. I couldn't care less about the processor and gpu being weaker so long as it delivers a consistent and smooth experience.
And one more benefit to using a phone that doesn't have a strong market share-you won't be using the same phone as everyone else
Also, buttons aren't making your device obsolete if you pick a GS2. I'm playing around with the SDK port on my N1 and the only difference with the new setup on buttonless 4.0 devices is that long-pressing home has turned into its own button, the menu button is now an on-screen button (represented by a vertical ...) that appears on one of the action bars, and the search button has disappeared. On devices with buttons, the ... button in an app disappears and is toggled by the traditional menu button, and long-pressing home will bring up the recent apps. This is the best they could do without fragmenting legacy devices.
I've got the N1 and I'm on TMo. I can't stress enough how aggravated I am that Verizon gets the Galaxy Nexus first! The TMo version BETTER be right behind it, as far as release date!
Here's my Win/Lose breakdown of The Galaxy Nexus vs. the Galaxy S II
* (GSII Win) Going with the OMAP4460 on the GN was a total 'WTF' for me. Almost a deal breaker.
* (GN Win) With a 4.5" screen, the GSII has only 800x480 rez!! That's the same rez as my N1 now with only a 3.7" screen! Not even a kick-up to 960x540! Unfortunately this is a deal-breaker for me.
* (GN Win) Though the Galaxy Nexus has a lower megapixel rating, it's got the zero-lag shutter and supposedly better low-light capability. As well, it shoots full 1080p/30fps.
* (GN Win) The GN being Pentile screen becomes a moot point when you factor in the 1280x720 at whatever ridiculously high dpi.
* (GN Win) I agree with OJ, having the LED back is great!
* (GN Win) It's got the NFC Chip. I just recently read that NJTransit is going to be supporting Google Wallet at a bunch of stations and buses. This is great for me.
* (GN Win) it's got a Barometer chip! A Google Dev cleared up the reasoning behind the baromter...Faster and more accurate GPS lock!
* (GN Win) It's got ICS pre-loaded and it's a Google phone. So it's got the new OS and it'll be the first to get all the updates/fixes.
The Galaxy Nexus is top of my (very short) list as far as choices for my next phone, but because they pulled back the reins on the CPU and are coming out on VZW first...I'll be keeping my eyes open for what all comes out on the market while I wait for a TMo version.
If you look at the press release for the Verizon GN and the Droid RAZR, you'll notice that the RAZR's press release uses the word "verizon exclusive" multiple times and the nexus's press release has no mention of the word "exclusive" anywhere. Don't get your hopes down until they announce actual, final availability.

Only a small small small minority of Nexus One users can successfully fastboot-oem-lock. In fact if you wish to take your phone back for warranty repair, one of the phones with a one click root is a far better option.
I think the camera is a let down for me I was hoping samsung pushed a new lens for better quality pictures. Also the non gorilla glass might suck if you dont take care of the device built quality looks to be the same as the GSII.
Screen type, size and resolution seem to be the crucial discerning factor for mobile phones. the Note 2 stepped up its size, and was an even bigger success than the Note 1. So should the next Note step up to a 6-inch screen ?

If it has no bezel at all, then yeah, I might just be able to use it with one hand. which is where my limit lies.

This might actually work. Starting out with the Note 2 and sacrificing the SAMSUNG logo at top, and making the bottom homescreen button much narrower.
Edit: Come to think of it. It is not actually a (secret) 4-way navigation button, right? I actually can't tell from the feel of it....

I took a ruler across my Notes screen and 6 inches of screen will be a tight fit.
If the physical button is made into capacitive doesn't count as that's not part of the screen.
I think the Current Note/Note 2 should not get any bigger in total physical size as that would go too much into tablet territory.
A 6 inch screen in my opinion would be the absolute max I would like to see this phone go to. Any bigger and I wont buy it.
I dont mind if the machine keep the same size as 3.2 x 5.8 inch, and screen is 6 inch, it should be able to fit the 6 inch in if it is kind of frameless.
It is possible.
But seems better if keep the screen as 5.3 inch size, and decrease the overall of the machine size to something like GS3.

Actually I do believe a 6-inch Samsung phone will be coming by the end of 2013. But this is pure speculation based on the rate at which Samsung churns out phone-models. It is harder for Samsung to make a 6" phone, b/c big high quality, high res screens are more complicated to make and because they break easier. Samsung has unprecedented brand value, and as such they fare better making no product (i.e. devices which never see the public eye) rather than a disastrous product with lots of bad press.
Would I want one? Perhaps, after I have watched many youtube videos and read reviews with real-life photos.

I remember when NOTE was released and I wondered if I should really buy it. I went to the store, checked it out and felt comfortable with it for daily use coz I could put it in my pocket and still use it as a 'phone'. BUT 6.3" I dunno! Maybe that's the end of the line for me!
LOL samsung should be crazy to put 6"+ screen PHONE unless its border-less with no keys, just whole screen .. yeah that would be cool :good:
-1 Samsung should focus more on productivity and entertainment for the next generation of the note. Even more processing power, more ram for another level of multitasking, more focus on the camera and photography features(which I doubt will happen because of the galaxy camera). The s pen of the note 2 was greatly improved upon but I feel that even more improvements can be add to the s pen. If they do decide to enlarge the screen, 5.7 should be the MAX!

From a psychological perspective the screen specs just have to have at least a 6 in them. Few would upgrade otherwise. Note = Screen. Case in point: apples product line and the journalistic endnotes they receive
I am pretty convinced that Sammy will go the way of virtual Android Homebutton in their new Note. Hate it or love it. And it will be pretty soon: Q2/Q3 2013

Good to see a new Droid like this. I'm still packing my Droid 2 Global with CM9 on Verizon since I have unlimited data and have thought about getting a Droid 4, but this is what I want now. I've always wanted a good 4G LTE with a keyboard.
I wonder how the battery life compares to the D4.
I'd imagine the Droid 5 will have better battery life than the Droid 4. LTE has been a big drain on battery, but newer components should be more power-efficient. Plus, it'll likely have the same internals as the Droid Ultra and Moto X, which both have pretty decent daily usage. Plus, the Moto X8 seems to be pretty efficient, too.
I just hope it keeps a microSD card slot, unlike the other new Droids and Moto X. I don't care if the AOSP has moved away from SD cards, it's still a necessity when most phones only have 16GB internal storage; few have 32GB... and I can't barely think of any that push it higher. 16GB just doesn't go very far anymore.

These specs definitely lead me to believe this was something planned along side the older Droid M/HD/HD MAXX timeframe that was never put in to production. Specs are very similar to those older devices (replaced now with the Droid Mini/Ultra/Maxx).
I don't see this being released....and if it is, who would want it?
I'd love a Droid 5 to come out...I went from Droid to Droid 3 to Droid 4 and a Droid 5 would definitely be the direction I'd lean...but I'd want something based closer to current specs and at least follow the current Droid line (Mini/Ultra/Maxx). X8 CPU, 2 GB Ram, AMOLED screen with active notifications, etc...
seriously, there should be no phone with higher specs than the d5 on release. moto needs to max out the specs and make sure the d5 is released as a flagship device in addition to being released globally. u can do alot more with a physical qwerty so it should follow that u get alot more power in ur device to make use of.
ill still get the d5 disappointing or not though. it would be an upgrade from my d4 i guess.
dual sim and infrared port would be nice additions.
price is not a factor here motorola. need outweighs price because of practicality.

I can just agree. looks like specs for a relese at Q4 2012 rather than Q42013. But if it would be released with those specs i will buy it. Its still the best qwerty phone. :silly:

not even 2gb of ram? i might not be getting a d5 after all. cant believe moto is going to cockup another droid release. meh.. looks like ill be getting a couple d4s to last me the next couple decades of qwerty death.
those specs need a serious overhaul. currently not even interested. what a waste.

Yeah, maybe these have the S4 Pro chips that didn't cut it to be X8s, but it seems they are making it lower-end. :-/

Agreed. Right now every "flagship" phone from every brand is the same as any other. The keyboard would make the Moto offerings stand out above all the rest, if they had done it right.
Also, comparing to the Photon Q worries me, since that one had a non-replaceable SIM card too. The phone has to (A) support global roaming and (B) allow you to use whatever SIM card you want. Anything else is not solving the problem.
This just made me a little happy. :fingers-crossed: 1GB ram is enough. At least, it's always been enough on my D4 for what I do. Says in that second article link that it's going to support microSD. I don't often look for new phones, but I might actually once again now...
