Droid 4 - Avatar

It's about time it poked it's nose out of the fog! So ready for this phone.

It's about goram time.

Awesome. I like that induction charger on the back there. Sexy!!!
Now I will have to justify paying full price so I dont lose my Alltel Unlimited Data plan.

Good to see a new Droid like this. I'm still packing my Droid 2 Global with CM9 on Verizon since I have unlimited data and have thought about getting a Droid 4, but this is what I want now. I've always wanted a good 4G LTE with a keyboard.
I wonder how the battery life compares to the D4.

I'd imagine the Droid 5 will have better battery life than the Droid 4. LTE has been a big drain on battery, but newer components should be more power-efficient. Plus, it'll likely have the same internals as the Droid Ultra and Moto X, which both have pretty decent daily usage. Plus, the Moto X8 seems to be pretty efficient, too.
I just hope it keeps a microSD card slot, unlike the other new Droids and Moto X. I don't care if the AOSP has moved away from SD cards, it's still a necessity when most phones only have 16GB internal storage; few have 32GB... and I can't barely think of any that push it higher. 16GB just doesn't go very far anymore.

this is awesome. thanks for this..

Loving the huge screen and wireless charging. I wonder if the battery will be user-replaceable?

These specs definitely lead me to believe this was something planned along side the older Droid M/HD/HD MAXX timeframe that was never put in to production. Specs are very similar to those older devices (replaced now with the Droid Mini/Ultra/Maxx).
I don't see this being released....and if it is, who would want it?
I'd love a Droid 5 to come out...I went from Droid to Droid 3 to Droid 4 and a Droid 5 would definitely be the direction I'd lean...but I'd want something based closer to current specs and at least follow the current Droid line (Mini/Ultra/Maxx). X8 CPU, 2 GB Ram, AMOLED screen with active notifications, etc...

seriously, there should be no phone with higher specs than the d5 on release. moto needs to max out the specs and make sure the d5 is released as a flagship device in addition to being released globally. u can do alot more with a physical qwerty so it should follow that u get alot more power in ur device to make use of.
ill still get the d5 disappointing or not though. it would be an upgrade from my d4 i guess.
dual sim and infrared port would be nice additions.
price is not a factor here motorola. need outweighs price because of practicality.

I can just agree. looks like specs for a relese at Q4 2012 rather than Q42013. But if it would be released with those specs i will buy it. Its still the best qwerty phone. :silly:

wow, just read that link.
?????????????
not even 2gb of ram? i might not be getting a d5 after all. cant believe moto is going to cockup another droid release. meh.. looks like ill be getting a couple d4s to last me the next couple decades of qwerty death.
those specs need a serious overhaul. currently not even interested. what a waste.

Yeah, maybe these have the S4 Pro chips that didn't cut it to be X8s, but it seems they are making it lower-end. :-/

man they just killed it. all enthusiasm .. dead

Agreed. Right now every "flagship" phone from every brand is the same as any other. The keyboard would make the Moto offerings stand out above all the rest, if they had done it right.
Also, comparing to the Photon Q worries me, since that one had a non-replaceable SIM card too. The phone has to (A) support global roaming and (B) allow you to use whatever SIM card you want. Anything else is not solving the problem.

This just made me a little happy. :fingers-crossed: 1GB ram is enough. At least, it's always been enough on my D4 for what I do. Says in that second article link that it's going to support microSD. I don't often look for new phones, but I might actually once again now...

Incredible S

I love how sexy my INC is but the new incredible S is, well wow. No specs as far as I can tell yet but the landscape hardkeys are worth it already.
http://www.engadget.com/photos/htc-incredible-s-first-hands-on/
Android central says it will sport a 4 inch WVGA super LCD display, rear 8-mp camera with HD capabilities, a front-facing camera, 1GHz processor and a whopping 768mb of RAM! The battery is also bumped up to 1450mAh
Of course with sense 2.3.2 too.... HOPEFULLY with a little gingerbread action?
I was thinking about getting the thunderbolt because I thought they were scrapping the incredible to make bigger phones but they answered my prayers! im waiting for this incredible S!
EDIT: actually it kinda irks me if it really comes with only 1.1GB of internal storage...
Definitely no gingerbread action on an HTC sense phone, probably won't be for a little while (OEM, xda is a different story lol)
That's my next phone for sure. Unless I go to the darkside and get a cdma iPhone

Desire S is releasing with Gingerbread (at the least, the article stated 2.4 which would be Ice Cream).
I'm pretty sure 2.4 is still going to be called gingerbread. HTC said the Incredible S will launch with froyo with an update to 2.4 coming soon after.

I read it was being shipped with froyo and then skipping to 2.4 shortly after it's release.
This intrigues me.
It also says the incredible S launches next month? if so... that's freakin awesome.

The big difference between it and the Incredible S it is launching alongside is that the Desire S will ship with Gingerbread (2.4) from the start, which should be some time in the middle of Q2 2011.

This is what I was referring too. That article also stated a Q2 release for the Inc S so I would expect something more along the lines of late April to early May than next month.

Which they probably won't, plus I think I read that if you have purchased stuff over PSN you'll have to repurchase it for use on the Xperia Play. I'd just wait for the NGP
So the new features are: Nicer screen, Front-facing camera, and more RAM?
I want more?

And a way faster (well capable of being) processor and 100% faster GPU, not to mention much more battery efficient. People read that it will have the 1ghz Snapdragon and assume that it is the same as the one currently in the Inc, but it is far from it.
But its still not as good as a dual core. Yea its better than what we have now but it could be better.

how do you know?
So many seem to be caught up on dual core being the end all, be all. Until the OS and apps are optimized for it, the only boost it will give is to your ego.
That being said, it doesn't seem as though we'll be seeing this phone on Verizon in it's current configuration. Qualcomm is notably silent on CDMA support in the specs for the MSM8255 chipset. It seems that this phone will be limited to GSM carriers.
Pretty sure this is GSM as well. Kinda sucks. 4 inch phone is about as big as I will go and I really don't even want to go that big. The 3.7 is perfect for me. The current offerings are just too big. I don't understand why people want a mini tablet to carry around?
Was thinking about getting a thunderbolt, but the incredible S looks sweet. Looks like I'll have to wait and see which feels better. Until I'll keep flashing ROMS and loving my Incredible.

Doubtful. They will drop this onto Verizon, probably as a SVDO capable phone. The entire basis for this phone is the Incredible, so it makes no sense to alienate those who have already bought into your product.

I think verizon will push to keep the incredible in their line up... The demand was pretty high for this phone when it came out.
Verizon stops selling the incredible in march and the incredible S is launching in march... I would be surprised not to see this in the droid line up.
And just saying aandroid 2.4 is meant for dual core phones.. So there you go an os optimized for dual core... I'm holding out for quad core snapdragons.

Given it's current specs, it's a GSM only phone. To operate on VZW, they'll either have to add a CDMA radio or switch to another SoC.

next VZW 4G device to be released?

I was trying to hold out for the bionic, but it looks like it will be at least late july & my old droid is almost dead.
What do you guys think will be released next??? Maybe the LG, then the droid X2, then the bionic? If the droid X2 is out by next month I may wait on it, but it's looking more like: April= Thunderbold, May=Charge, June= LG, July= DX2, August= Bionic finally. Just my own conclusion, but seems accurate so far........
the LG revolution and droid x2 just got released fyi
Droid 3 = end of June
Bionic (Targa) = end of August or early September.
Could you tell me something more about componetns in motorola droid 3?
First off, Dual-core obviously. Whether it's a Tegra 2 or TI OMAP4 is up in the air still - sources have confirmed both at different times, most recently though, a benchmark was cited as having a OMAP4. Either way, should be an improvement over its predecessors. Also, noted to be clocked at 1GHz. vs. 600MHz for the OG Droid, 1GHz for the Droid 2, and 1.2GHz for the Droid 2 Global.
Second, 4 inch screen size. A bit of an increase over the OG Droid and Droid 2. (3.7 in). The resolution is found to be a qHD screen - noted at 960x540 vs. the standard 800x480.
Third, larger keyboard - has 5 distinctive rows of buttons vs. the traditional 4 rows. The feat. here is that the numbers 1,2,3.. have been added independently of the Q,W,E,R,T,Y.. row. So no more having to press "ALT" in order to type a number with the keyboard.
Forth, Increase in memory, I believe cited to be at 768MB vs. 256 for the OG Droid and 512MB for the Droid 2, Droid 2 Global, etc.
Those are the biggest features of the new Droid 3 that I've found while keeping tabs on any updates. Anyone feel free to add more or speculate if needed.
If only the Droid 3 was going to be 4G. I would buy it in a heartbeat. The Bionic looks like it may not be out until later this summer, so if the Galaxy S II comes out with a 4G radio before then, I will be scooping that up.
Good news... engadget and other websites just featured new screenshots of the redesigned Droid Bionic with docking capabilities at here:

Sooooo the new pics are sick. I wanted a SGSII but after the pics and specs today ill deal with the bootloader and use my nook for development bug. 4.5in screen and LTE. not to mention webtop and such. I'm a HUGE fan of omap and I'm so happy Motorola went back, Tegra never did it for me and there's no good Snapdragon on the horizon for big red and I have an aweful feeling our SGSII will be Tegra. 1gb of ram and 1080p... I'm sold!
I have a upgrade on 9/6... I'm really hoping thats the release time frame

Pentile screen?
Does anyone know if the new Bionic will have a pentile screen? I'm wavering between the HTC Sensation and waiting for the new Bionic, but I don't want a pentile screen. Do you think its inevitable to offset the battery consumption of the LTE network, or will we get lucky and avoid the pentile screen?
Pentile screen?

I've seen no mention of an OLED display yet for the bionic, so I'm not sure the whole Pentile thing applies here... I'm guessing this will be a standard LCD.
In addition, I'm questioning that it's 4.5". A quick test bringing it into Photoshop makes me think that it's a 4.3":
The smaller phone in the comparison picture (is that a Motorola Defy???) display dimensions (in image pixels)
184x352 = approx 397 diagonal = assuming the Defy is a 3.7" device, that makes the image scale about 108pixels per inch
The larger phone (Bionic) display dimensions:
253x385 = approx 460 diagonal, at our 108ppi, that makes the display approx 4.25" (about 4.3")
Just an observation...

I used "MeasureIt", a plugin for Firefox, and did some math. Again assuming that is the "Defy" 3.7" next to the Bionic, I also came up with a 4.3" screen.
I am assuming this will come with the same LCD pentile screen that the Droid x2 came with. I haven't seen one in person, but I don't think they are as bad as some people make them out to be. I think it is a person to person thing.
Are you site its a defy? All the articles mention it as an Atrix. It does look alot like the Defy but it appears to have a FFC on the left side of the speaker and its missing the silver trim on the defy.
Sent from my NookColor using Tapatalk
Nevermind that last comment. Looking closer it is a defy. If the Bionic is 4.3 I think ill be getting a Function instead

Anyone else notice the obvious chin on the bottom of the phone (where the microphone and Verizon logo are placed)? I've only really seen that chin on the Droid 1. They removed it on the Droid 2 and placed the microphone on the bottom, but then I remember reading that the Droid 3 will have it back on the front face of the phone to avoid microphone sound quality issues.
So could it be possible that this is actually a keyboarded phone? Maybe it's the Droid 3. I mean, we don't exactly have a wealth of information on either phone, and this picture's screen has proven to be smaller than we first expected.
I think the chin may be a design element they are using. Also the LTE radio might add some thickness to it
Sent from my NookColor using Tapatalk
Yeah, on second glance, the "chin" actually looks like it's at the same level as the screen of the phone. I initially thought it looked like it might be lower than the phone and that it might be part of the slide-out keyboard layer of the phone. But no, alas, it looks like we're never going to see another good slider phone as long as we live.
Nobody has mentioned that it appears to have curved glass like the HTC Sensation?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I hope it won't have the same screen as the x2, that screen is surprisingly disappointing. I figured with a qhd screen it would look awesome, but I actually think it's worse then the OG droid.

To be fair, with same specs and price, I'd go for Nexus S. Can't see your country but roam the android threads, MIUI and CM threads to see what's good for your money with great dev support and ROM variations.
I'm giving you my 2 cents for that.

if you're expecting some Ice Cream in this device, forget it
it'll be already melted when it releashed by the way
The hardware is good. Yes we are dissapointed by the proper LG 2.3 firmware they promise to release but you can use CM7 as an alternative - IMO CM7 is much better.
Well if you just think only and only about ICS then go for nexus s.
But just think aside for a while.... and here you go
- With optimus black you get a great looking phone with slim and sexy built. Compared it. With thick nexus s and you will see the difference.
- with optimus black you get the best and the brightest display in the world. I know a new Nokia device is going to have 1000nits brightness but its a 3. 5" device... and the smaller the screen size its easy to bright it up. But for a 4" display our optimus black is still the best and brightest display in world.
- with optimus black you also get memory card facility... especially useful if you need to exchange card with friends on occasions. And tremendously tremendously helpful when you get out on a tour... just Leo two three 8 gb cards and you can shoot as many photos as you wish record as many videos as you wish. While with nexus s you will have to rush to a cyber cafe to empty your internal memory into a pen drive or dvd.
... so in short in my honest opinion you stocks buy optimus black. Trust me with cyanogen mod and perhaps with help of any developer around here we will surely get ICS. sooner or later. It debt affect tbe use power of the phone to that extent as you think. Consider this again mate.
Thanks everyone, I think I will go for this phone as I like the look of it. I have cyanogen on my current phone (galaxy 5, £50 phone) and that's made 2.3 available, so 4.0 should be able to go on the black.
Does this phone have any specific developer working on cyanogen?
If not, I know one I could request to try to do cyanogen for this phone?
Sent from my GT-I5500 using Tapatalk
There is Cyanogen mod in progress already for OB. Nearly done by the sound of out.

Dont buy it! You will regret it, the chances of getting ICS are none. I really regret not buying the nexus s and i wouldnt have bought this one in june if i'd knew it wouldnt have gingerbread until 2012, cause lets face it, we wont get gingerbread this year, not a chance. I even recommend you to get an SE xperia Arc as they are cheaper now, at least in sweden, an SE is nowadays much better with updates. Still nexus s is the best alternative.
Sent from my LG-P970 using XDA App
And the cyanogenmod is far from complete. Read the thread about it, dont trust those recommending this phone, they just dont want to admit to themselves that it was a bad purchase, you know, nobody wants to drink alone.

Yeah, it looks a good phone. I mean, they managed to get gingerbread to my current phone which I thought was a miracle (has very little ram) so this should be able to get ics one way or another
But its in consideration anyway
Thanks for the comments so far, and I welcome more opinions to this phone

I don't recommend it, that's why I sold my Optimus Black. I had a problem with my phones and in all firmwares I tried I encountered a lot of annoying bugs, like battery drain, GSM/3G problems, wifi couldn't connect to an enterprise signal... all the uses I'd give to an smartphone were gone with it, so thats why I sold it.
Really, I was happier with my old Iphone 2G. It had some crappy features, but did all the things I wanted.
My recommendation: buy another device, specially an SonyEricsson or HTC. They are serious brands.
Of if you like to have Ice Cream Sandwich for sure and quick, but a Nexus device.
Regards

Who will make my next phone?

Hey all.
Basically i just want to hear all your thoughts on your current devices, and what you think of the next device in that product family.
My thoughts.
My first android device was the Motorola defy which really sold android for me, the fact i could treat a phone horribly by accident and it not care was a really solid selling point. The developer community for it was really quite strong too, it even receiving CM10 before my current S2.
The original transformer isn't the prettiest, lightest and fastest tablet anymore (not that it was ever lightest SO MUCH GLASS) but it was and is my first tablet and still works amazingly today. Good job Asus.
My current phone is the Samsung Galaxy S 2 which i bought outright after everyone that had one giving raving reviews and a quick view of the forum showed a very active community. Little did i know the issues the developers faced to get the aosp roms working properly, it is not pretty and it is entirely the fault of Samsung and their hardware partners (I am looking at you, yamaha). I know this and love the developers for supporting my S2 so well, especially codeworkx whom has been moving devices lately.
I love the idea of getting the S3, but i would only be going for the larger screen and if all i want is the larger screen why not go even larger and get the Note 2? Especially after its drop test video. It is a tank of a phone.
The One X+ Kind of interests me with unlocked bootloaders etc. But the fact i have to flash the kernel separately to the ROM every time (or at least that is my understanding) would really annoy me.
After the defy i would rush to a unlocked bootloader on a Motorola. That and screen size were the only issues i had with my defy.
But my current plan runs out in December which is only a few months away and i would love some ideas on devices coming into Christmas season.
Currently i am thinking Note 2, but i don't want to have half baked aosp roms because of hardware support. Ideas?
And yes doing a BYO 6 month plan with my local carrier is an option.
How bout this one?

Although super durable i am not sure it would have all the features i am after. And look at that screen, tiny!
HTC 100% of the time.
There are some really cool devs and contributors who have written apps and scripts that enable you to flash everything all at once, kernel included.

I have the SGSIII and the One X. In the case of the One X (not the One X+ but it's basically a refresh of the One X) yes, you do have to extract and flash the boot.img via your pc using fastboot and the flash the modules via recovery...not as bad as it sounds. It's a great phone.
The SGSIII not only has a bigger screen but a higher resolution than the SGSII. There are many ROMs for it and in the case of the US variants I've flashed ROMs made for the AT&T variant on my T-Mobile one. (The international version also has great development.)

Hey Tommy thanks for the reply, i take it your experience is from the EVO?
Thanks Babydoll one of my friends has the one x which i rooted/cm10ed for him the other day, it was an interesting look into HTC custom roms and i must say it is not overly difficult or anything. And i did see the scripts Tommy was talking about, they would be nice in easing the transition. How do you find the one x build quality? I heard it was hit and miss between users.

I have a HT23 which is one of the earlier batches and I have no issues. No Wi-Fi attenuation, no screen flicker, nothing wrong at all with my device.

I also had the (original) Samsung Galaxy Note. I really loved that phone. I only sold it because the eMMC brick bug got on my nerves.
I still miss that phone. I am getting the Note II.

That's the reason why you sold it? You could have flashed a safe kernel. Done.

Motorola X Phone or Nexus 4, which one would you prefer?

People say that Moto X Phone will drop in Aug., equipped a Dual-Core CPU, Clear-Pixle camera, and a Big battery which can let you using it for over 2 days. As the Nexus 4 has overheat problem, and a poor battery, easy smash glass back... which one would you prefer.
Actually my Nexus 4 can handle two days' usage, but it is really hot at sometimes. I would prefer Moto X phone, if it will be available soon..

I'll take the nexus 4 because I'm going to buy it when I get home from my holiday

Two things:
Nexus > Motorolas custom Android skin (and yes the X wont have stock Android)
High end > Mid range
I'd need to see the reviews once it's released to make any judgements on it over the N4.

Who said the moto x won't have stock android on it?

I'd say the decision comes down to what the real specs and details are when it's all officially announced. If it's vanilla Android with Moto widgets as a bonus- it will be interesting.
With Google/Motorola looking at spending a TON on marketing for this phone; it's hard to imagine Google allowing Moto to release something that won't grab a lot of people's attention.
Also, where it's being sold can be a factor for Nexus 4 owners. If it's carrier only I won't buy it. If it's through Play Store then we're getting closer to raising my interest.

I think I would stick with the Nexus. I don't like the button placement on that phone, I like the flat slab feel of the Nexus, curved phones tend to feel funny to me, glass > plastic, Nexus has a quad core where the X is said to have a dual core, etc.
LTE, better camera, better battery, and a better looking phone.... It is hard to stick with the N4 after the Moto X is released. It's rumored to have the same price as the N4 and considering it is being sold on the Play Store, it is clearly going to have a stock experience.
Easily the Moto X. Smart Actions are awesome imo. I always like Moto's build quality too. Their cameras are average. I should've bought a Moto Atrix HD over the Nexus 4 myself. The LTE will be active on the Moto X. I am preparing to sell my Nexus 4 for the Moto X or S4 in the next few weeks. The Nexus 4 is flawed because the digitzer is visible on each device, the camera is not great at all, the phone overheats too much, the battery is not as good as other devices like the S3. Outside of those issues, the phone is a good overall product. You cannot have everything for $330 (after tax and shipping.) The Moto X will have a slightly faster processor (might be dual core, but still faster, 1.7 dual > 1.5 quad even though dual will be overworked a bit more), the camera will be a lot better at 10 MP, the build quality will be better, the OLED display will help, the battery should be a RAZR Maxx HD style battery at like 3100 mAh, LTE like said before, customization on the build quality and design of your choice, and you can always put a rom like CM10 on it.
