[Q] Housing Swap - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys! So i completely understand how to completely disassemble this phone due to how easy it is (it only takes ten minutes!). But i was wondering do you guys think it would be worth being out of a phone for like a day (while paint drys, etc.) if i painted the whole thing and got rid of some scratches? Im seriously contemplating doing it but i just wanted your guys opinions and also any ideas on what colors i should use . Thanks!

that could be very bad for one no more warranty and two the paint could flake off and damage the hardware inside i would just skin it if u want to change the color that bad.

Thanks.
Thanks mate. My warranty is actually long gone and i will be getting a new phone shortly. The reason i assumed this would work because i saw a guy do it on the evo in the portal. It was actually a top post for the day. Id think about skinning it but for some reason the difficulty of the project is intriguing me. But i will def take what you said into consideration. Thanks

thats cool just please post pics if u do it im interested to see how that would turn out.

Okay
I'd be glad to post pics but it probobaly wont be untill this weekend because i use my phone too much during the week. I was thinking a white and metallic silver look. What do ya think?

i always liked the flat black look

The htc back housing will take dye better than paint. There was some pretty easy steps way back when. Check out ppcgeeks touch diamond forums, or google it.

Hey thanks man.

Issue
Do you guys any idea how i could paint the hardware buttons to hide all the scratches mine had from when i "let" my sister "play with it. Do you thing if i just buffered it all out with a fine sandpaper or something and then paint around them that would work. Because i figured if i was going to make the whole phoen beautiful then i may as well fix this falw too. If you do not think that part is possible then i guess ill just buy new housing for like 5 bucks. But just lmk. Thanks

I like the chips and scratches on my phone -- it reminds me of Boba Fet's helmet.

Moving couch = Broken Tilt

I'm assuming I smashed my At&t tilt or something, there is no cracks on the screen or anything, but the pic below shows the display I get. I'll have the phone for about a year in about 2 weeks. Anyone have an idea as to how much At&t or HTC will charge to fix this or am I better off buying a new phone? Or any ideas as to what could be broken and how it can be fixed? It doesn't allow me to do a hard reset. Thanks
well i don't know if warranty will cover it or not but you are still under your one year warranty so you could try to get a replacement. Its hard to say what could be causing it. You can check out mike channon's articles on disassembling a kaiser.
Good luck.

Well to my trained eye, it looks as though you have actually cracked the lcd screen. This damage isnt generally covered by any manufacturers standard warranty. Unless you purchased an extra warranty including accidental damage, I think its up to you to repair yourself unless you want to spend 400USD + for the repair. Taking it apart isnt terribly difficult and I have seen links to lcd screens posted all over for no more than 100USD. Check Ebay also.

I don't see a crack in the screen. Can there still be a crack in it that isn't visible or not noticeable until you take it apart? If that's the case I'll either buy a new screen or just buy a new phone on ebay for 200bux. Also anyone have any recommended sites on how to replace the screen?
This raises a great question for me. i work in a clean room/static sensative environment and repair and calibrate many different types of electronics (mostly signal generators & spectrum analyzers). I was wondering if anyone here has actually attempted to replace a LCD screen with success. And if so, how complicated the process was. I have downloaded the schematical drawings and have found replacement parts for the kaiser online for extremely cheap. i will post the site as soon as i find it again.
I did a screen replacement on a Wizard, and it wasn't that difficult. just make sure you don't break anything while trying to pry small pieces off to get to the screen.

Generally you will NOT see a physical crack on the surface. The surface is actually JUST a digitizer ( a separate piece which is built into or ontop of your LCD for input purposes ). The digitizer is basically your touch screen portion of the LCD. What is actually cracked is the thin film below that which contains all of the liquid crystals.
As far as the replacement goes, I believe it is Michael Channon who has the step by step instructions on how to disassemble and replace the LCD. It isnt a hard task from what I can tell. I had taken my hermes ( Tytan ) apart so many times that i could do it in my sleep. Its not a terribly difficult process.
Here is Michaels Guide
Its not in English but its not hard to follow the pictures. He has done a great job at documenting the procedure.
If you are a bit scared to try it yourself, have a geeky friend do it for you ( maybe get him a date to a movie or something lol )
It should only cost you no more than 50$USD to repair ( Minus the bribe for a date lol )
Hope this helps you out !

Thx, I'm gonna give it a shot. I went ahead and bought the screen off ebay from the post by pyraxiate. Worst case I mess it up and buy a new phone of ebay for 150-200, which is what I originally thought I'd have to do, so this at least gives me a chance to save some $$$

Glad I could help
Got it all done, actually my pops did it. Works great, he took it apart just like the Mike Channon pics show, don't know if you had to do all of it or not just to replace the screen, but he did. Only one little annoying thing now that it's back together is that a small part of the black plastic out case hangs out just a tab and isn't flush, which makes it a little annoying when hitting the power/standby button on the right side of the phone. But I can learn to live with that I think. thanks for all the help.
congratulations!
good to hear you've achieved a successful repair!
correct me if i'm wrong...are you saying that the two halves of the phone (screen and keyboard) don't align properly when the keyboard is closed? if so, i remember a thread in this section of the kaiser forums that details (with pictures) how to possibly fix that particular problem!!!
"search and ye shall foundeth it !!!"

As was stated before, there is a thread for the case not aligning. I did some quick looking but to no avail. If i come across it ill be sure to post it
I'm not sure if I'm explaining it correctly. But it's basically the outer case, and around the power button it's not flush. Not sure if you can tell from my pics. I tried also doing a search w/no luck. I'm sure there is some specific name or something other than case that it's under.
When i replaced my faceplate i had the same problem. all i did was push it in...kinda hard, and it poped in, or you could use a plasic flathead and pop it back in...

I tried that, and it doesn't seem to pop in at all.
I think its just like DemoShadow said. I dropped mine once and it seems to be a similar issue. I also just pushed really hard to get it to pop back in. I think its just that clip isnt in place as it should be when it was put back together. If anything, try to take it apart and put it back together

how did you put the keyboard back on????????????????
Can you be more specific?
Hey,
I literally just replaced the screen on my backup Tilt last night. Still got most of it in my head.
What, exactly, do you mean about putting the keyboard back on? Got any pics of where you are now?
This was one of the easiest things I've had to do...asside from it being somewhat tedious. Most of my issues were resolved by MAGNIFICATION! Once I could see what I was doing, there were almost no issues.
I only paid $31.99 on eBay for a screen with free shipping (from USA no less)...less than the $35 I would have had to pay with the insurance through my Provider Dealer...and I didn't have to wait for 3-5 weeks to get it back.
I'd do this for people with broken screens as a service, but I can't guarantee the cost of the screen...it goes up and down too much.
If you can be real descriptive, or have pictures, I'm pretty sure I can help get you back together.
Let me know, I'll keep an eye on this thread...

you dont have to remove the keyboard to replace the LCD, unless u're talking about the outer keypad, which just sits in its spot

Replacement G1 / Dream Cover

I have looked far and wide for a replacement cover for the G1 / Dream. It is fairly easy to find replacement battery covers, however finding the front cover replacements is another story.
To specify, I am referring to the plastic surrounding the LCD, the plastic surrounding the Menu, Home, Trackball, Back and End Buttons AND the battery cover ideally.
To confirm, this photo points to the plastic I am referring to and wish to replace. - http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/phot...authkey=Gv1sRgCN_V3MeRuKPz5AE&feat=directlink
If ANYONE can guide toward a location where I can purchase these replacement parts, I would GREATLY appreciate it.
Again, I have looked and looked and found nowhere where I can purchase them together or separately.
Thanks in advance.

[Need] How to change the faceplate of the Magic?

I am so interested to know if someone has guides or videos guidance to change faceplates on the Magic/MyTouch3G.
My girl friend has a black phone and I ordered her a new white housing for the phone from eBay. I received everything including tools but there was no any instructions. I gave a try from what I can see but it was not successful. I even searched on net but no luck yet.
Any comments will be really appreciated.
here's the magic service manual.
it details how to pull apart the phone into it's individual parts (colour pics included)...
http://phandroid.com/htc-magic-manual.pdf
you may or may not need to totally pull it apart just to change the faceplate (i don't know), but it'll still give you a good idea of how it all goes together.

Thanks for information bro.
Actually, I need to give a try and figure out if I could just pull the faceplate along without totally pulling it apart. It will be so painful as I wont even realize if something goes wrong. Damn wish I had some videos on this.
The mytouch is easy to break down but it would have to be totaly taken apart to change out the plastic housing.

Oh that's awesome. I wasn't even LOOKING for this but it's awesome.
Just one problem with that manual, it's for a prototype version of the sapphire which has the hero style buttons on the bottom instead of the Magic ones. Now, I'm not sure if this is the only difference but just bear that in mind.
I have fully disassembled 3 MyTouch phones. Easiest smart phone to break down so far. Just don't drink any cafiene before hand. not diffucult in any way. just needs a steady hand. HOWEVER! If you have never done this kind of thing before you will likely screw something up. I have been tearing electronics down and repairing them for twenty years. The ribbon type cables can be torn VERY easily, one slip with a screw driver can tear into a board and destroy it beyond repair, too much stress removing a fragile screen can break it. The learning procces on this type of stuff is an expensive one. Go VERY slow and be VERY patient.
Very tempted to replace housing on mine, currently have grubby white Voda one and would like black/red HTC one on ebay. However, as poster said before I have little experience in doing this and nervous to do so. Not sure if I am brave enough!
Can anyone confirm whether or not this housing fits the Mytouch 3G?
It looks like it does. (You can usually tell by the camera hole on the back plate, it's higher on MT3G's) but I'm not sure.
Thanks.

I bought the same in white color says with Google in back cover, and it worked perfectly with my Rogers Magic. I think Magic, MyTouch3G all come under G2.
That might be a bad sign, as the rogers magic I believe is the 32a mainboard and the mytouch is the 32b mainboard. But then again, maybe the mainboard version has nothing to do with this. Is there someone out there who knows for sure that can confirm this?
Somebody should make a video of the housing replacement... i have changed some housings but never a touch screen phone... help would be appreciated...
Hell ya.. I was googling it for days 'n weeks. There was no luck so I went looking for phone repair shops. Finally found a chinese store and they did it for me for $20. That is my story.
Any luck with a video for this?

This is really late and all, but I don't think that housing would work with MyTouch3Gs because the spot where you speak is on the opposite side of the MT3G
Oh man...That looked very complicated
So, in order to change the housing, I need to fully torn apart my phone?

I had the same problem on every phone shop in Pacific Mall. But I finally found a one in the Pacific Mall. Probably they are the only people do housing changes for Magic You got to go the area that has phone parts and repair section.
Enter to the mall from the main entrace and turn right and walk all the way down and then turn left. You can find it somewhere in the middle on your left. Sorry I can not remember the name of the shop.
By the way I had my own housing. I do not know if they carry in stock of those.
Oh man, Ive done some research and found a few local phone repair shop who can replace my housing but they all charges over $50.00 = =..I'm going to do it on my own
Okay... I'm finished.
the overall process only should be taking about 30-45 mins.
just follow the guide from step 1-7, then you can jump to step 29 which is remove the LCM from the plate.
Then put the LCM along with rest of the motherboard (watch out there is 2 parts linked together) into your new plate.
Now, put everything back together.

Worn volume buttons / battery plate? Any tips?

On my white Vivid, the volume and power buttons chrome are compelely worn out and its copper color, and the back battery plate is starting to chip its paint as well. Im kinda picky and things like this kinda bug me (expecially how the buttons clash with the rest of the white body)
Has anyone tried anything to remedy this or restore it? Painting it perhaps? I would like anyone who has done something about this to share how they touched up the worn parts (besides using a case)
I remember there was a thread a few months back about this issue. I don't remember a resolution coming up other than the case. I wonder if you could buy replacement buttons, not sure about painting. Seems like you would have to take it apart to do it since if any got in to the crevices it could mess up your phone.

Im referring to that matte coating that it has on. I have chromed a mytouch 4G before. How is it working out for you? Because when I did it to the mytouch it looked great but the chrome smugdes very easily and was hard to clean, does the vivid plate smudge the same way?

Do it!! Also heads up to everyone HTC will send you a new batterydoor free if you "lose" it. My friend just got a new door after his was dented badly.
Just finished working on my battery plate. What I did was spray it with Tylex, and lightly sand/buff with the tougher side of a sponge, the coating came off so easily and now I have a brushed metal look, im very pleased!!! Uploaded a pic. Now if there was some way i can make the power/vol buttons not clash with the copper color...
Btw, in real life it looks much better, obviously the flash will make the textures pop out more

Thnx for the tips. Interesting point about the fingernail paint, could this work on the vol buttons? I could cover the edges and apply a small coat to cover up the copper color, either silver or white. Question is, would this last without easily chipping?

If u feel that way the be our guest and get you a iPhone ..imo iPhones suck too
I have had all version of the iphone since 2007. even back then the build quality is better. All I'm saying is something as simple as paint on a part should not flake off so quickly and now I'm stuck with copper buttons with no idea how to fix or repair it. So instead of coming on here and telling me to buy a new phone how about laying an idea to fix the issue..
btw: to others with this issue I have posted on HTCs website.. but I'm sure they will work on it like fixing the voice dialer option.. haha
http://www.ebay.com/itm/160748688402?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 best choice i think for u.

My assembly skills suck..60 bucks and a chance to completely destroy the phone..hahah . I need to call AT&T and see if they or HTC will do warranty work on it. there is too much of a tight tolerance to try to chrome it and then clear coat it. Ill never be able to push the buttons in.. haha
Well I finally caved in.. I called HTC and asked them if there was a way to fix it myself and they basically told me no. The phone still has its 1 year warranty and they explained the process to me.. They only have one repair center in ALL of America..haha (Texas). So when you call and talk to them they will give you an RMA number. take out your batt, sim, case and send it to them.
They were easy to get a hold of and it was pretty quick to get things set up. It will be hard to not have a smart phone for 2 weeks but I had a back up pos. Since my back up phone was not a smart phone I went to an ATT store and they did it for me but told me I would "Lose" my unlimited plan because that phone didnt support it. The manager told me he will contact the right people to get it back.. then told me for 10 bucks a month(insurance) I could just get a new phone.. I told him I'm already paying 160/mo for 3 phones..haha
Anyways, the moral of the story is, if you are having this issue send it in now before your warranty is gone or live with copper color buttons.

Did you check and see if there was an AT&T Device Support Center near you? They may be able to do the swap while you wait.

Cracks in Note 4 Frame

Hi,
I was just inserting a sd card when I discovered some cracks at the bottom of the frame.
Does everybody has this?
See pics:
Also could anybody tell me it is normal that the tooth in the backcover in the red circle is missing, compared to the thoots in the green circles?
Thnx

Doesn't seem like cracks. Looks like fusing of plastic and aluminum was not perfect, but nothing to worry about.

Just checked mine. It looks almost exactly like yours

For the cracks at the bottom, mine as same as yours and it looks like the draw lines.
HOWEVER, for yours second picture about the tooth (red circle). Yes you are missing 3 right there
mine is also like yours and the others, i think i normal because everybody have it
Well.. called my Local Phone shop and will receive a new back cover. But the cracks.. it should not crack and I think it is a HUGE design flaw.. even more so when more note 4's have the same cracks. A 780+ euro should not crack! Dont get me wrong.. I love the note 4.. And maby there is a little samsung fan boy with in me, but this, I just can not accept this.
I wouldn't call that a crack, it's at the point where metal frame is molded onto plastic chassis, I'd say it's expected to split due to the heat and etc.
Everyone has that on the bottom I think it's normal

Again, you do know that, that plastic and the metal frame are one piece? They don't come apart. In the process of fusing plastic to the aluminum, there are some tolerances, especially considering that it is under the cover.
When you say crack, one assumes, it developed after the purchase. I would probably assume you bought it like that.
And no, all back covers are supposed to be like that.
Just return your phone please. Thanks.

What ever, take a look at this back cover... still has the tooth.. compare it with the pic in the 2nd post..
So it is NOT supposed to be like that!!

So what? You probably broke it by removing it and putting it back on again. Just buy another back cover, they're cheap.

The back cover wasnt the problem.. was just checkin.. and i didnt broke.. sure about that.. the tooth did not break off.. its a molding issue.. but again.. that is solved and wasnt that big off an issue.. The cracks in t phone it self was the issue. But thnx

I understand what you say but everybody has it so I think it's normal
Think the cracks are there on purpose. I think I read somewhere that its for the antenna.

Dude. You're just bumping thread to try to stay relevant. It is normal, it is hidden under cover, and has no bearing on the look and function of the phone. Does not get worse. Give it a rest. Replace your freakin phone already. Sell it. Throw it in a garbage.
Btw if you started disassembling body of most of the products, I bet you'll find imperfections that are not detrimental and are generally not visible until disassembled.

Okay, seriously? This is like being upset that the undercarriage of your car is not painted to match the exterior. Get a ****ing grip!
