[Q] How many apps now in android market for tab? - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I am contemplating buying a galaxy tab. I would like to know if someone can help me find out how many many apps available right now to the tab. Personally, i feel the number is not that important as long as the apps you really need are available, but i thought of asking anyways.
I would really appreciate it.
Thanks.

Go to Market.android.com. All the apps can be browsed there.

But isn't that for android phones as well? I was talking about apps made for tabs.
Thanks for replying.

It's not really as comparable as in the Apple App store, which needed the apps converting to tablet versions, as Android apps tend to be able to scale to multiple resolutions in a neater manner.
The SDK has many examples of handling different resolutions/dpi devices, so these days, pretty much everything you see, scales on phones/tablets.
So still worth going to the market and just browsing away.
There /are/ some games that require tegra chips, not sure what filter to show just them though.

For games there is thread discussion here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897901

the guestion you should ask IS ... How Many Apps Aren't For The Galaxy Tab

More than you can afford
swyped from a galaxy far far away

Just to clarify coz I've been asking myself the same question.
Almost all the apps in the market will work on the Tab and look nice because it is still counted as a phone (software wise). Still, all the 'Tablet" apps which are made for the Honeycomb will not work on our Tab.
Among the ones that work, I found a lot of the apps that make a slight use of the bigger screen but not as the honeycomb.
A wrap up, you'll find more than what you need in the market for the Tab...

Yes, but apps made for phones work on tablets as well. Take Angry Birds for example. There is no tablet specific Angry Birds app. The phone version works just fine on tablets though. There are a few exceptions to this rule, but in general, any app that works on a phone will work on a tablet.

How to rate and comment on apps from within there honeycomb market?

can't figure this out, Iam quite annoyed. If you can do it on a phone you should be able to do it on a tablet.
If I go to the web based market I can do it, but to hell with that, why should I need to? What an inconvenience.

As of right now you can't.
I've noticed this too. There was one app that I was lookoing at once and it actually had little tabs at the top for comments, ratings and ect. Its weird it isn't for all of them.

I was trying to figure this out as well, its rediculous that you can't submit ratings on the tablet market app!

My first pet peeve. What can I say, even Google is not immune to hiring morons.
But I suspect it is because they don't want a bunch of negative reviews on apps that are not designed for the tablet yet. However, it should still be available for the tablet features apps.
BTW, it's so annoying that the Facebook widget doesn't work on Honeycomb and neither does Pandora. Jeez.
Yeah the devs are seriously slacking at Facebook
Trillian has a ton of annoyances I'd love to comment on yet can't, so yeah it's pretty annoying.

WOW! This is the most constructive comment i've read on the internet about this issue so far...thanks!
Since honeycomb ecosystem is not yet evolved, they make it harder for zoom users to post bad comments and bad ratings. They did it on purpose. They were smart to do this in a sence. But it makes me hate their guts a bit.

this is exactly the reason why. i suspect it will soon once they have a way of marking apps which are honeycomb optimized - and then you can comment on those apps
edit: if it bugs you log on to the market from a pc and you can post reviews there

I wouldn't say that... If developers want to go with the times, they can't simply ignore honeycomb. I'm sure they are thinking about it alright. I agree it's annoying... but just give it some time.
fyi... Load a phone account gmail that u have with a facebook app with... Then goto market and download your market apps from that phone acct... I have a working facebook widget on mine..
I use web browser, login to android market (from xoom), rate, leave comments... then i open market and i can leave, rate apps without browser!

[Q] What Exactly can you do with a SGT??

Hey whats up guys, I have a Galaxy Tab on the way from sprint.
It's my first actual official Android Device (Had a T-Mo MDA, Sprint Mogul, TP1, and TP2). I have a Touch pro 2 that I was able to put Froyo 2.2 on... But that device became too tedious and I felt it was way behind compared to most Android Devices.
So I have a couple of days between now and when I receive it.
I was doing some browsing on the capabilities but I'm 100% sure I haven't seen all of what can be done.
So I figured that everyone can chime in as to what capabilities this thing has, and other members can be informed of what their device is capable of that they didn't even know.
Rooted, and Unrooted.
I think this can help everyone being that it's all condensed in this thread.
Thanks guys

I was, at first, a Tablet hater. Not sure what possessed me to get the Tab, I think I wanted to see what the hype was about.
I honestly, don't use my laptop much anymore. It's become such an effort to turn it on, and browse the web, when my tab is near instant. 3G is a must. Its what's made it so useful. Its just a fantastic device. Games are amazing on the 7" screen, browsing is a delight (I use Dolphin HD) and its just so portable. It'll fit into some jean pockets and most back pockets of any trousers.
I would buy a 2nd version of a Tab instantly.

8.9 LTE AT&T Gtab (SGH-i957) questions

So this is still a pretty new device, just rooted last week, and currently has no roms or recovery image available.
I am curious what things we can do to our STOCK rooted rom to improve performance.
Obviously overclocking is something we can do and has real benefits.
We can remove some of the bloatware that AT&T installs.
What else can we do to a stock rom to make it more efficient and more like an optimized custom rom, while we wait for the rom cooks to make us something nice?

Woops, thanks mod!
like you said: overclock and remove bloatware. thats about it with root. use a custom launcher and it should be even faster.
What about zip aligning (what does this actually mean anyways)?
Any other kernel or system\general android tweaks?
Nuke/freeze the bloatware and wait for ICS to come out. Install ADW Launcher EX to get a smoother desktop experience. Overclock and enjoy owning the fastest dual-core Android tablet on the market at the moment.
Don't sweat deodexing or zipaligning, performance gains are minimal for the effort, learning curve is steep.

Get Titanium Backup from the Market, use it to nuke (uninstall) or freeze (just what it sounds like) bloatware applications. Careful with the nuking, best to just freeze so they don't run and don't show up in the app tray.
I hear that there are other apps on the market that will do the same thing, but I've been a Tit man for years, no need to change.

How about getting a newer version of the marketplace?
I noticed mine was way different looking then the market on my roommates eeepad transformer.
We compared versions and mine was way way older, and infact downloading way older versions of alot of apps.
For reference my market version is 1.0.28 and his is 3.4.4, my sprint evo 4g is also 3.4.4.

1.028 is not right. did you leave your tab connected to the internet for a while. it should auto update.
Don't rush the market update, trust me.
Sure, the Market browsing screen is flashier, but 3.4.4. on the Tab looks like ****e in the My Apps section, and loses some functionality. It's really a phone Market that's not quite formatted right for tablets yet. I'm guessing there will be an update again soon, for ICS tablets
That said, go to the Themes and Apps section in the 10.1 forums (or 8.9 too, think), there's a link to the APK, you can easily try it out.

My tablet is ALWAYS connected to the internet, and I tried to search for updates multiple times in the about system settings dialog and it always said it was up to date.
Also wanted to add that I did go ahead and install the 3.4.4 market last night. One of the apps I was hoping would be updated was Words with Friends, in the newer market it downloads a higher version number of the game, but in reality it is the exact same old version that was actually correctly version marked in my original market.
So basically even though it claims to be the newest version, it still gets the old version, even though in the version number in the game itself also claims to be the newer one.

I have version 3.61 on the tablet and 4.61 on the phone. if you try to install the program from the android market website it says that program version varies by device. it is possible that 4.61 is not prepared for honeycomb yet. you could always find an apk for 4.61 online and install it. If you do, let me know how it goes.

Even though when looking at my sync settings in google it looks like it all should be working....

[Q] Amazon AppStore wrong scale?

I did a search and couldn't find anything about this.
This drives me crazy. The Amazon AppStore has such tiny text and pictures, almost totally unusable without some reading glasses on. Ive compared what it looks like on the Note to the Galaxy Nexus (which has a very similar resolution) and it's displayed correctly on the latter.
Any tips or tricks to get it to look right? Is it just a bug with the app? Should I file a bug report to Amazon?
What it looks like compared to on the nexus:
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
It's not really a bug per-say. Since the Galaxy Note has the same resolution as most tablets Amazon's app treats it as such. So it is technically displaying properly but since we have a 5.3 inch screen and not a 7-10in like on most android tablets we have to kinda squint our eyes. You could try reporting it to Amazon but I'm not sure if it will yield to anything.

wtf are you talking about? amazons own kindle fire is 1024x600 vs 1280x720 on the galaxy nexus and i just showed you in a picture that it renders fine on the nexus. if the nexus is a special case then the note should also be a special case. you cannot go by resolution to determine the screen size. and this is the only app ive run into with this problem.

If you want people to help you, you really shouldn't be rude to people - especially those who aren't being rude to you. You don't have to agree with his answer, but being a jerk about it simply makes others not want to help you.
Programs have no idea how big your screen size is. They do, however, know your screen resolution. It is not unreasonable for programs to say, 'okay, you have this many pixels, I'm going to maximize use of them.'.
Now, as you noted, there is the issue where you can have an extremely high density display (imagine this on a 300+ dpi retina display). And of course, eyesight varies. Making 'phone exceptions' as you implied it's doing for the Nexus is possible but long term wise that's a bad way to go. You'd have to arbitrarily decide what people want for that device.
What they should do, like all programs should do, is have a 'font size' type of setting, so people like me can live happily the way it is now, and people like you can set it to the 'phone layout' that you want.
tl;dr: Log a enhancement request with Amazon.

and? what? thats AGAIN not my point or related to my question or this argument. THE GALAXY NEXUS has a high resolution display similar to the note and has the same downloaded amazon market the note uses and displays it correctly.
Yeah the text is small. So what? Be happy us in the USA even have access to it. The free app a day is a great benefit.
When the ATT Note launches and its more common Amazon will get around to fixing it.

I think they were disagreeing with you, but not trying to be 'telling you off'. That's my opinion, however. We're going to have to agree to disagree on this.
You might be interested in knowing that earlier versions of the Amazon appstore used the 'phone interface' on the Galaxy note. If I recall, it was only fairly recently that an appstore update changed the store to 'tablet mode' on the Note.
I remember thinking 'oh.... wow. hmm' when it happened. I flirted e-mailing them a letter of protest, but I got used to it.

Why not? Other apps do - Netflix on the Note (as has been mentioned later), for example renders pretty much like my Galaxy Tab 10.1 - very different to the same app on my phone, and I think it is far better.
Whilst I appreciate the small scale of the Amazon AppStore may be a problem for some, personally I much prefer it. If they suddenly changed tomorrow to use the "phone" interface from the Nexus, I would be considering that to be an "issue", though I fully appreciate that the smaller size would definitely be a real problem for someone with less than perfect vision.
Personally, I think that GallardosEggrollShop was 100% correct when he said it was related to the resolution of the Note. The fact that it looks different on the Nexus is because they made a specific exception for the Nexus, but that doesn't change the general rule.

Good point here - the Note has not be launched in the US, unlike the Nexus, so why would Amazon specifically code an exception for the Note, when the AppStore is not supposed to be available outside the US?
However, even when the AT&T Note is launched, it possibly won't be fixed because the AT&T device will likely identify itself differently to the regular international Note.
Regards,
Dave
I just installed the midnote ice cream sandwich rom (which is quite usable as a daily driver), and interestingly the appstore has revered back to the 'phone' interface.
I have kind of mixed feelings about this.
As I said in earlier posts, it would be nice to have the option of selecting.

Can't believe we were anxiously awaiting this..

Android 4.2 doesn't even seem well thought out, let alone designed. Is Google playing the Apple game, tying us into their universe and making us take whatever the deliver?
Do they even care how many apps won't work or have to have multiple purchases to support their multi-user "security"? Should have just left the multi-user thing to 3rd party devs. They fail on this, IMO.

Google doesn't care.. Remember when 4.1.1 broke a bunch of paid apps by sticking them in the asec folder which wasn't mounted at startup? So since it wasn't mounted Android never saw the apps during boot and paid keyboards and widgets disappeared after a reboot. MONTHS went by before it was addressed. Meanwhile developers of those paid apps had angry customers and money lost because of Google
This will be the same song and dance.. Google is getting very sloppy with development and communication with developers pre-release seems to not exist.
I love it.

Google is run by humans. Android developers are humans. Humans make errors. Not too complicated.

well its not about the bugs, bugs can be forgiven.
System works fine...
Its about their behavior
For me personally that I can't mount my USB stick, or lost tablet mode means that I downgraded to 4.1.2 back.
Today is Thursday. The sun will still shine Friday
Humm ..
Its called growing pains. Sometimes you have to take a STEP Back to move two bigger steps foreword. I see so much talk about this is not there that is buggy. Yes we get it.. But what i am seeing mostly is app compatibility Being Broke.. This is something that will be fixed Quickly by most Developers.
Android is and always will be "A WORK IN PROGRESS". My opinion only but if you want bland and safe sell your nexus 7 to me for .50 cents and get a ipad mini.
People who are having issues Please go to the developers web site and let them know your app is not working properly .Give them exact details. You can do the same to google at groups.google.com. Just be Patient
Now my GRIPE The multi user cluster (word here im not typing) as others said was not well though through by google. My guess is they made a date promise and pushed out only part of the Feature.. Typical Google.
It will get better and it will happen quite soon.. Lets just hope...
Take a deep breath relax and say to yourself.. Its only a tablet its only a tablet its only a toy tablet... ..
Thanks for Reading... :fingers-crossed:
I suppose YMMV, but I love 4.2. Smoother than 4.1, and nice features. The only thing that really seems half-assed is the multiuser support.
What is your problem with multi-user? For me and my daughter it is working great - could not be better.
I did add my account to her user ID Play store so she could see the apps we own and install the link.
Performance is good - all our preferences and accounts are separated - and I really can't think of any other features I would want.

I haven't played with multi-user yet, can you add the account just for the play store and not have someone access the gmail account associated with it?
That's my gripe, I want to be able to for ex, have my nephew play with my tablet and all the games etc, but don't want him to access to my gmail etc. I thought this was perfect for that but then read about the app issue. Also, I assume there is no type of limited user, in that a secondary account can still uninstall apps, but at least they can't delete files from the other users home dir.
Yes - my account is just added to my daughter's play store. Open play store and look at add account option.
Works perfectly to give her access to the apps we share.
NO shared Gmail.
Forgot something important:
When you add a second account to play store, you are given a bunch of items you can synch, like contacts.
Uncheck them all!

i had a valid post in this thread, it seems to have been removed ........yet you left the dude saying "love it".
cheers for that :confused
and im sorry but why has this guy just been thanked by 10 people? the post has nothing to do with anything...... shenanigans shenanigans i tells ya!!:silly:
Stick mount wasn't a feature of 4.1. It was hacked in which is why you had to be rooted and use an app. You'll get USB support again. Multiuser support screwed with the storage. That's all.
New tweaks are a little rough around the edges but will be smoothed out soon enough. Give it time, damn guys. I personally think its no better or worse then 4.1.2. We just have a few new toys now.

4.2 = 1st time I've truly experienced "butter"...
Sure, I kinda miss the bells & whistles I had on Codename Android, and I'll definitely check out any forthcoming 4.2 updates, but scrosler's stock, rooted, deodexed ROM is far & away the smoothest, quickest ROM I've used on any Android device. Stock kernel, no tweaks, plain vanilla is for me for now. Way better Google experience. OK, I sideloaded the AOSP browser for Flash, but that's it. Chrome is much more responsive on 4.2 than 4.1.2 - Everything is noticeably quicker - I even detect better wireless response. Your results may vary, but I'm not going back!

Well, I do belive that you are right. I also feared (and expected, to tell the truth) that something EXACTLY like this would happen. I tried NOT to update the system, but why the hell did they keep forcing it when we obvoiusly do not want it? And probably, they must have known that it will broke a lot of things...
Just to explain: for me, there was a message with three buttons: upgrade, more info (which leads to seme text and bigger "upgrade" button and "later", but that "later" means only "ask at next screen unlock" which made the tablet realy hard to use. So, what choice have I had?
