[HOWTO] Root (via application) - LG Optimus Black

You'll need:
* GingerBreak v1.20 (download)
Instructions:
1. Download APK and copy it to your phone.
2. Go to settings > applications and activate unknown sources.
3. Go to settings > applications > development and active usb debugging.
4. Open a file manager, go to where the APK is located, click it and install.
5. Go to applications drawer and run GingerBreak, pick Root. Wait for reboot.
6. Confirm you have a new application called Superuser.
Additional notes:
* Reboot may take up to 10m due to cache cleaning.
* After rooting you can uninstall GingerBreak.
Credits go to Chainfire who created GingerBreak and whose official thread can be found in XDA.

Needs drivers, it's more complicated.

Already rooted mine! Very easy and fast with gigerbreak!
Obrigado

I rooted mine using gingerbreak a few days ago. Some people talks about superoneclick but I found a really fast and clean gingerbreak which solved all my needs.

i rooted mine with gingerbreak and it's easy

Great! GingerBreak is fast and easy

GingerBreak worked fine, Phone rooted and some stock apps removed. But I cannot make my /system writable.. I click on the Mount R/W button in root explorer and nothing happens..
EDIT:
I mounted it as R/W using the terminal

Hi.. I just root my phone as u say and now i have SuperUser app.. But i dont know how to remove Vodafone apps and the other i dont want, in SuperUser i cant do nothing..
Can you help?
Best Regards

You can use SuperUser only to revoke permissions of apps.. nothing else (as far as i know)
To remove apps, install Titanium Backup ★ root from the market. Open the app, go to the Backup/Restore tab, click on the app that you want to remove and select Uninstall. Be careful though, removing certain apps might break your system. So backup first.

I will try...
Thanks for the anwser!
Regards

Troubles

[Q] HTC HERO 2.32.651.2 Root Help

PLEASE SEE BOTTOM OF OP FOR STEP BY STEP WALKTHROUGH
Hello Guys,
I’m a Sprint HTC Hero owner who is trying to get CM 6.1
My device has the latest OTA update 2.32.651.2
I went ahead and tried z4root which has 2 options, temporary and permanent. Went ahead and did temporary and it stated that it was rooted. Superuser shows up in my apps, so I went ahead and installed ROM manager as a youtube video said (gave a full successful walkthrough)…I open ROM Manager up and it says – You must root your phone for ROM Manager to function. Superuser was not found at “/system/bin/su” or “/system/xbin/su”.
Now using Astro File Manager, I checked those directories and it wasn’t there as ROM Manager stated, but in my SD Card, I see su-2.3.1-bin-signed…
Now my question is, should I try it with permenant root?
If not, what is the recommended next step?
Should I delete/uninstall everything I have that’s related to my previous root attempt and do the following:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804296
I’m an Accounting major and a noob at this stuff…and I see people helping each other out here which is awesome, but I get confused trying to keep up with some posts where people are sent to other posts and so forth :/
Thank u in advance! Happy Holidays!
-------------------------------------------
Below is the process on a step by step basis from which i was able to complete it with the help of skndeep102. Thanks again buddy!
-Download z4root here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
-Install and run app, press on Permenant Root
-Let it run until it says it has completed
-Once it has completed you will see the Superuser app in your drawer
-Download Rom Manager from the Market
-Open Rom Manager and press on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery at the top (give it a bit as it has to download it and then install)
I had already downloaded the CM 6.1 rom and had it on the SD card
-So i went ahead and hit reboot to recovery in ROM Manager
-Once it is in recovery, go ahead and scroll down to Nandroid and do a backup
-once you do a back up press back and reboot
-Once it starts up again head over to ROM Manager and select Install ROM from SD Card
-Look for the Rom, select it, and it asks you to Wipe Device and Cache, select both
-It reboots to recovery, select the rom and install
I hope i didnt miss a step, but thats pretty much it if i remember it correctly (spent much more time reading than actually doing, lol) Also, if there is something that isnt touched upon here just go ahead and read through as several questions were asked and answered along the way.
Hope it helps!
* Process confirmed to still be working as of 1/5/2011

i am in the same position...the recommendation to me was to RUU to an older version and then root. I am not sure how to do that, so im hoping someone has another solution.
I personally dont trust those one click root options. Manual root requires a little more reading but I have never had an issue that way.
You can always try the permanent option. I dont see why you wouldnt want permanent anyway. If you use the temporary, its gonna unroot you when you reset your phone.

Did the permenant root allow you to continue with the process?
RUU back to an older version just requires that you have the htc drivers installed and the ruu exe. You just double click the ruu exe and follow the instructions.

I'm in the process of trying it...its been stuck at Rebooting for a couple mins now... :/
Wait and see at this point, i guess...
OK so I did the permenant root...and appearantly it worked since z4root is telling me it is and it now gives me the option to re-root and undo root...Also, when I open Rom Manager, it isn't telling me to root the phone...
However, I saw in another forum that a way to check if it is rooted is to download a terminal emulator and type in "su" after the $ ...When i do that it tells me permission denied....
What next?

It says that I must have ClockworkMod Recovery installed to flash and restore roms.
Where do I get this?
Just a heads up, it seems the root works, the su file is in bin and i tested out drocap2 screencapture app and gave it superuser permission. Worked perfectly...now if i could know where to get ClockworkMod Recovery as the Rom Manager I got from the market did not bring it :/
Use the "un-option" and try another method. I installed a stock ruu on my phone this morning to update my prl and tried the same app. It doesn't flash everything you need like the "flash_image" file. You need that to flash a recovery. I just re-rooted my phone the same way I did back in July. Take note that I am with cellular south and all I had to do is run a batch file and oila, there I am sitting in recovery. If you want to try another "root via app" method, you can try this-->View attachment UniversalAndroot.apk .
Instructions:
Open app and root
Download Rom Manager(which you have) and flash cm recovery.
I still think it probably won't work, but you can try anyway. I think these "rooting apps" only do enough so you can use apps like "AddFree"(or whatever it is) and others like it.
EDIT: In Rom Manager, the very first tab(up at the top) should say"Flash ClockworkMod Recovery". Press that one. It would ever flash for me until I went back to me nandroid.

quick question, performance difference between stock 2.1 and lets say most roms out there a huge difference?
anyone else care to throw some input into my situation?
Happy Holidays btw...
Just a heads up, what worked for me, once I was rooted and downloaded ROM Manager I had to install Superuser.apk, then when I tried to flash clockwork recovery I got the Superuser dialog box asking for permission, then select allow. another awesome program to help is Android Commander that you install on your PC and it provides a gui adb access but you have to have sdk and adb installed on your pc, but if you look around there is info about it available. hope this helps, wish i had more time but i was just home on my lunchbreak, good luck

Rooting your Motorolla Droid running 2.2.1 write-up

The OTA 2.2.1 update made things complicated for Droid users who want to root and download non market apps. After several days, countless hours and trial and error, this is my little write up on how I rooted a Motorolla Droid running 2.2.1 Build # FRG83D.
z4root no longer works and neither does the ability to download non market apps with 2.2.1. This is the easiest way to do it although there are other longer processes to root your phone which may have not been used on a 2.2.1 Moto Droid. I did a factory reset before I started but that is optional, let's begin.
*** Disclaimer ***
Please make a Nandroid or backup before this just incase.
1. Go to Motorolla's site and downloaded the Motorola 4.8.0 Driver with MotoConnect here. This program automatically downloads the driver your computer needs. This is a MUST. Lots of websites’ and write-ups forget or are vague on this easy step and it makes for a headache. Once downloaded, click on “Update Drivers” and click start. (You can download the driver file and wait for your Hardware Manager to pop up and go that route or just take the easy way and do this)
2. Download the latest version of Superoneclick and follow its directions on how to install it, you can find it here.
3. Connect your phone with your PC via USB. Make sure that USB debugging is ON. I removed my SD card to be on the safe side but if you choose not to, make sure you do not mount the SD card.
4. Open the Superoneclick program after un-zipping it, in Administrator mode. Follow the directions, there is even a video on how to do it. After your phone is rooted, click on " Allow non market apps ". Superuser should now be installed on your phone in your app's list.
*** The newest version of Superoneclick install BusyBox along with Superuser. Open your app drawer and look for these two. If both are there, you are done! If not, continue to step #5. ***
5. Disconnect your phone from your computer and restart your phone. It's not needed but, it's best to start with a fresh restart.
6. Go into your market from your phone, download Busybox ( free app ) and run it. Once installed, make sure within the app it states that your phone is rooted and the latest version of Busybox is displayed.
7. Restart your phone, this step is a must.
Your phone now has root access. You can download non market apps as well. I use Titanium Backup to remove bloat and such but you can use your favorite file manager.
Why the OTA 2.2.1 made things disfunctional, I don't know but this is my little solution and hope it helps.
I am going to give this a nice healthy bump since I have seen a couple Root confusion threads. I will be more then happy to answer any questions.
THANKS
Thank you so much!!!!!!!
Working on a Droid 1 for the first time. This is just the info I needed! Thank you sir!
Not a problem! I actually find that a stock ROMed, rooted and cleaned up Droid 1 is just as quick as the ROMs available to download if not quicker.
Thanks!
Hi,
Wanted to say thanks! Your write up was concise, straightforward and easy to understand... The app worked just like it said it would and rooted my Droid (the original) 2.2.1 FRG83D like a charm!
The Tutorial was a god send as that clarified what to expect and how to react if something went "brown & lumpy".
Thanks and now off to make a backup before learning the other fun stuff!
Tried this, downloaded the driver PC sees the phone, check
DL and run superone click, Check
no busybox, download and install, says rooted, check
here's the problem, can't get into recovery can't do a nand before or after rooting. seems recovery can't see the sdcrad.
I tried to root my Droid 1 (2.2.1 FR83d) with super one click. Everything seemed to work. I got super user access, TI backup runs (mostly)
From Rom manager I installed Clockwork it said everything work but no recovery mode access (yellow triangle) After reading up here it was suggested to flash SPrecovery and then back to clockwork so I did that bot SP and clock work appeared to run fine but still no recovery mode.
Setcpu seems to be working superuser is working but I cannot make a backup of the phone (nand, ROM manager recovery both fail) TI can't uninstall factory apps, and dose not make a complete backup just apps and restores dose not do a complete restore.
It seems I have half a rooted phone. Any ideas on how to fix this?

For some reason my SU settings didn't pop up, and that caused the install to fail. The 2nd time around, it asked me for permission and it worked.
K I need help please. I used the rs4 lite guide to root the wife's phone ,that was successful, installed rom manager and did the clock mod flash now I can't get recovery, none , I installed busy box and still nothing lol, help I was gonna put cyan 7 on
I figured it out lol, just had to search the forums a bit more , running cyanogen 7 and is a sweet rom . Sry for being a noob . Thanks to all who came up the Rome and cracks y'all rock
Great walk through. Some of you might need another driver (ADB) for XP. They won't let me post the link but it's at Alldroid.
Worked flawlessly on my new 2.2.1 Droid 1, thanks!
Thank you very much for the post, helped me a lot for my rooting Droid / Roi as it is Verizon but I have with Iusacell in Mexico

Hey All,
This is going to be somewhat on and off topic.
I have jumped into the world of Android with both feet in the last few weeks.
So far I have obtained:
A Color nook which I have rooted using autonooter 3.0.0 running stock OS and also run Honeycomb off my SD card (until the real version comes out)
A Moto Backflip which I have rooted using rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin and is now running Unofficial CyanogenMod v6.1.2 (Froyo 2.2.1)
And Now I just bought a Droid with a dead battery, 16GB SDcard and a bad micro USB port for $25! (figured at $25 for a 16GB card it was worth the risk) I was able to "jump start" the battery and got it to power on. Its currently running 2.2.1 with build number FRG83D and is not rooted. Looks like the digitizer has a dead swath right down the middle.
Anyway, I can fix both things for <$30, so at $55 I still think I got a deal. Not too mention the fun of repairing and hacking it!
So my question:
I plan to use it for a little while before spending $$$ and making the repairs. But w/o a USB connector it does not seem that I can root my version.
Do I have any other options? keep in mind the current lack of ability to push things with ADB.
Super fast and easy. thank you so much!

Want to know if unroot is possible here.

Hi there,
I bought an Optimus Black rooted and it has several programs and stuff.
At the beginning didn't care too much about it, but now I realize that I cannot use my gmail account because it always asks for the previous owner account, and searching I found that I need to factory reset in order to change default gmail account.
So I went to reset and it goes to a clockwork recovery program and I'm not able to select any option because it's asking for E: from previous owner (I found obvious I think), so I had to reset the phone and nothing changed when it comes back.
As you can see I'm totally noob with these android mods, but I was an experimented SE/Nokia user, so phone modding is not new to me in some sense, meaning I can learn quickly.
My question is: Is it possible to unroot my phone? Although I don't have any kind of recovery data, backup or history of what has been done in this phone.
I don't care about software already installed, as I mention I can start over again with my own style.
I'd appreciate your help here so I can start safe.
Thank you.
what ROM do you use?
check it in setting-about phone
if it's 10a/b, you can unroot using gingerbreak
LOL, made me check deep to see what is my phone.
This is what I found:
Android 2.2.2
Base band XMM6160
Kernel 2.6.32
Compilation FRG83G
SW Nova v7

If it's Nova then SU is preinstalled in the system. Even you factory reset it SU will be there as well as preinstalled app that came with it. Might as well flash a stock (KDZ) if you want a fresh one. Cause Nova depends on SU for some apps.
Sorry for late response, I was pretty busy in other stuff.
Understood. It is possible if you can point me out to a specific tutorial to start how to flash a stock, as you mention?
Thanks in advance.

Not necessarily. For reasons that are beyond me, I was unable to root my v10b OB using Gingerbreak v1.20, instead using SuperOneClick v1.9.5 (not v2.2.1) to do that.
I do know that, supposedly, for v10a and v10b Gingerbreak should work and that for v10c+ Blackjack or SuperOneClick v2.2.1 should do the trick. But none of those worked for me.
Just pointing that out.
Thanks guys.
I followed that link and searching on it I found this tutorial:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1111771&page=3
Three questions:
If I follow it and I flash the kdz that I choose (local carrier), I will get my fresh phone? Even that I have SU, Nova and Clock recovery installed?
Is it ok if the kdz file for my local carrier is V10A_03.kdz? Instead of V10A_00.kdz
What if I try gingerbreak and select unroot, then factory reset? SU will remain?
Thanks again for your help.
1.) Yes, you will get a fresh phone, but with no root access, and with the stock kernel and 2.2 Froyo on it.
2.) No idea.
3.) Not sure Gingerbreak will work for your phone, but if it does and you unroot, clearly the su will not work anymore. That's what the root is all about, granting you, the user, the lowest level point of access, and if you unroot, the application will no longer be able to reach that point. So SuperUser and any other applications relying on root access, such as SetCPU or Terminal Emulator etc. will not work.
Quick question.
I couldn't make factory reset due to Clock recovery, as I stated in the first post. How should I do the "wipeout all data before start flashing" ?
My goal is to change default gmail account in order to install more apps, but I'm not able to do it because I need to factory reset. Maybe there is another way instead of fresh flashing.
Thanks.
if you are root (I think it's your case):
- install "rom manager".
- in rom manager : choose "restart in recovery"
° if you don't have recovery : it will do a factory reset
° if you havec recovery installed, use the volume key to navigate to the wipe option and wipe everything (except sd)
since now I'm in vacation so I'll do some tests this week and see if I'm able to compile an unroot process file
hello, I also have problem with rooting as well
I have the ver 2.2.2 10D

LGE P970 V20* GB Rooting

Hello Everyone
I have noticed in a few threads there is alot of talk that people cannot root the new GB firmware from LG I fiddled with all the current versions out there and have now rooted them all. Thanks to Ilko and alot of stuffing around..
Firstly IM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR BRICK OR VOID WARRANTY THIS IS INFORMATION ONLY Ok now the formalitys are over and done with.
If you already have the latest of Ilko's Upgrade kit good for you if not I suggest you get it now if you dont know where it is here is a link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1111771 now you have the neccessary tools to root your phone (theres also plenty of other awesome stuff in there too) we will start.
STEP 1. Go to the UPK file you created while installing Ilko's kit and Install all the drivers in the kit (even if your sure you have them it wont hurt to re-install) make sure your phone is unplugged at this time. Keep your UPK file open.
STEP 2. On your phone Goto Settings>Development and check USB Debugging
STEP 3. Now plug your phone into your computer DONOT mount USB Mass Storage
STEP 4. Go back to the UPK window and select SuperOneClick and open it.You may get a administrator rights popup make sure you allow or click ok whatever it says.
STEP 5. You need to make sure you do this in the right corner of the window of SOC (Superoneclick) there is a drop down that says exploit take it from auto and select gingerbreak because auto uses PSnueter and it has been patched in most cases and will not work.
STEP 6. Your phone should still be plugged in to your PC now is the good stuff make sure you read this carefully now cos you may brick your phone I havent done it personally but my brother has but he is pretty stupid.
STEP 7. Click ROOT in SOC and wait if it pops up with your device is already rooted would you like to continue click yes (this pops up if you have rooted your device before and also if theres a temp root on your device) now it will get to Rooting step 6 and hang maybe even it will stop responding at this point goto the UPK and open SRP and allow it to run your phone will reset and SOC will continue and say your phone is rooted do the test although it not necerssarry and it will confirm.
FINALE. Go to the apps and you should see Superuser (little skull thingy as the icon) Please thank me if I helped you also thank Ilko and Chains both great guys
Any questions please post I will reply and help as I can
Thanks Cuzzo-
Well if this method works, ur the big king from now on
-edit- And you are sure you dont have Redy's repack installed?
But it sounds quite much like the way it might have happend to me, but since I tried to many different things, I couldnt tell which combination it was...

SRP is a Shell root process in Ilko's Upgrade kit. I have used redy's repack but I have also flashed v20a and the Europe open v20n and tryed same method it works no problems.
The only reason you use the SRP is it refreshes the ADB and stops SOC from querying it at root step 6 so that the process continues Im using SOC v2.1.1
Could you share SRP.exe ? It is no more in UPK.

psneuter - patched

Yes, just try.
I am using super 1 click 2.3.3, because it hasn't the choice gingerbread to me, so I choose zergRush.
Then I start to root, everything is just follow the instruction till the SOC hangs.
Then, I open UPZ, there is no SPR exists, so I open BlackJack and it reboot my P970. After reboot, super1click back to normal but my p970 still unroot.

lol... guys, SRP was my first release in order to follow the first method of getting root where SOC 1.9.5 was stuck. In fact, psneuter can't restart adb by itself, that's why SOC couldn't continue. Since it is totally obsolete, I don't recommend its using.
If you just need to kill adb server, create a new text file in an adb directory, paste the following then save it as KillADB.cmd :
Code:
@echo off
title Killing ADB server
echo Killing server
echo --------------
echo.
adb kill-server
echo.
echo.
timeout 5
run it to kill adb, so SOC will continue by running daemon again with its next command
