[Q] how hard will it be to unlock the bootloader - Motorola Droid 3

I'm thinking of getting the droid 3. but from what i have read its all most impossible to unlock the Motorola bootloader or to even get a recovery to flash custom rom's would this be worth it? or should one wait till the htc dual core slider comes out.
like this one
http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/07/htcs-dual-mode-cdma-gsm-android-slider-with-1-2ghz-cpu-headed/
or will they make the htc double shot for Verizon
http://www.phonearena.com/news/HTC-...RTY-slider-coming-to-T-Mobile-in-July_id18407
thanks for any info and thanks to XDA for starting this forum

It's not possible to unlock it, however it's possible to work around it using 2nd init, different kinds of injection into the kernel etc. pp.
I guess the screen size, resolution and keyboard makes it the phone of choice as office replacement...
I would get this one if I needed a keyboard.

My two cents is that it may be a matter of preference. I say that being a current Droid X user, where it has a locked bootloader, but devs have been able to partially get around that for root and use Droid X Bootstrapper to access recovery ... so we can load some ROMs, leaks, make backups, etc. Of course, we cannot load custom kernels so 'tweaking' has its limits. But it sure beats running a stock phone loaded with bloatware!
How tightly locked the Droid 3 bootloader turns out to be will likely determine my next phone when my renewal comes up. I want a physical keyboard and I'd prefer the Droid 3 if devs can at least work the magic they've been able to do on the Droid X (and Droid 2). But if the Droid 3 is locked up so tight that devs can't get root, then probably I'll be heading towards one of those HTC models you referenced or continue to make do without a slide-out keyboard.

I want phones to be fully unlocked and time will tell if Moto delivers on their promises (kind of doubt they will). Still custom ROM's, themes, backups, etc. are as essential as custom kernels. I know coming from both the ThunderBolt and Droid Charge that it was great to have full access, but it does come at a cost if you are not careful.
That said I am willing to donate to the devs who are willing to support the Droid 3. Its really that simple. I know Woodyman over at droidforums.net is planning on building a AOSP ROM but what we need is root and CWM Recovery.
Are there any additional devs supporting this phone?

i would gladly donate to any developers that work on unlocking the droid 3. and other things i hate being limited and told what i can do or not do with the phone i buy.

Birdman has said that fast boot works so it's possible to unlock if we get the right files

Just my two cents guys, but I read today, that Motorola will be rolling out an optional, bootloader-unlocking OTA, sometime in Q4. Seems like it's going to be a bit of a wait, but we WILL be getting the ability to unlock the device. Also heard (someone please verify if this is true) that an unlocked version will be made available on launch day (I know it rolled out in some spots on the 7th, but my store, in Jersey won't have it 'till this Thursday). No word on added price for the unlocked unit, but I think I'm gonna give it a go!

Can you link to where you read any of this? Right now no stores have it. It is shipping from online orders. Stores and best buy get it on thursday. That would be strange to ship a different version but I hope something about this all is true.

that verizon slider looks like the htc merge that never made it to verizon

Well, I can tell you if they offer an unlocked version on launch day, mine will be going back to just so I can get one. But somehow I doubt they will be offering two versions. Unlocked bootloaders, Q4 WTF Moto get on it now.

Hmm went to best buy today. They said the d3 will be sold unlocked tomorrow? Interested to see if true.

Bionic vs vigor

How is the bionic treating u guy's ....im up in the air with this... cause i love my tbolt..but really wanted the bionic...but at the time it wasnt out so i got the tbolt cause i wanted to be grandfathered in the unlimited data plan...but now the bionic is out im thinking about it...but also rumors about the htc vigor a.k.a incredible HD is said to be out soon. So now im in a dilema..lmao.. I know the only difference between the 2 is generally is diffrent UI, diffrent screens and 1 ghz dual core and other has 1.5 dual core....But would like other ppl input. I know it's more on what's my personal preference, but would like some of u guy's input....... Thanks in advance

I updated to the bionic from a thunderbolt and am very happy. I actually like the bionic screen better than the thunderbolts and the battery is
A little better. I really like the fact that I can see the display outside perfect. I am not sure if a am blind but I love the display and do not know why people complain about it. I bought the bionic thinking I would return it because I wanted the prime. I decided to keep it because it was the first phone I could use outside and see the display.
For what it is worth I will also be getting the prime when it comes out. I want to try it out and if I like it better the the bionic I will keep it.

The prime isn't coming to VZW and there's no official release date for the vigor. Get the bionic. You won't b disAppointed and you'll never keep up with technology anyway. Lol.
Some quad core 1080p display phone would drop right after you get the Vigor.

I endorse most of this comment. You're asking us to compare a phone that is out to one that isn't. There is always going to be the next big thing...
I'd say it boils down to this- do you like HTC/sense or Moto/blur more? There is your answer.

I got a Bionic to replace an ailing Charge with the intent to do exactly what you're describing and I very well may end up keeping it. I can't remember the last time I bought a phone and immediately formed the impression that this was a device that just might last the term of my contract.
I am coming from droid incredible.
I am planning to return my bionic right before the return window is up and wait for the Vigor.
I miss HTC sense wayyyy to much. I also dont like how when you pinch to zoom it doesnt auto fill text in the new window it just zooms in.
I can see diaplay outside which is nice but motorola just isnt for me. The zumocast hasnt worked so i cant comment about that except it doesnt work.
I think i was spoiled with HTC and Sense and dont like any other ui though.

Coming from a tbolt it has been great. Screen, battery, & quality (of phone) are are better on bionic. Loved my D1, bolt failed me so was given bionic. I love that the extended battery doesn't add 3 lbs to phone. I'd love to get prime if/when that comes out for VZW, but who knows what will be out around christmas.

buy it at bestbuy instead. they got a 30 day policy that aligns with verizon's 30 day cancellation
I love my bionic. Its the best phone i ever had. Very satisfied with it had a facinate before bionic
I love my Bionic.. I've used alot of droid phones but all were Motorola so I guess my opinion might be a bit biased but my brother likes HTC phones and I've used his here and there and I prefer Motorolas build quality over anything and the Bionic is fast and has good battery life... this may be the first phone to last the term of my contract ..

If you buy it from Costco, you get 14 days to back out of the Verizon service (I might be wrong on this, could be 30), but 90 days to exchange the phone. I bought a Charge on July 3rd, exchanged it a few days later because I thought it was defective (turns out it just has a ****ty radio), and then exchanged it again for the Bionic a couple of weeks after it came out.

Petition to Unlock Motorola Bootloaders

If you are unhappy in the little support we have in terms of roms, and kernels for our device, blame Motorola for locking their bootloader. Moto claimed that they would unlock the bootloader at the end of 2011. What's the date today? Looks like they changed their mind. We would have a fully working ICS rom if it wasn't for Moto not to mention Hashcode would have more hair and it would have less gray in it... So sign the petition! If you are really passionate, like me, check out the original thread and help them out. If ASUS caved, so will Moto!

Petitioning got HTC and Asus to provide methods to unlock their bootloaders. It also got Verizon to recall that $2 bill paying fee. This IS the way to get companies of this size to do what you want, you have to provide them a real number of dissatisfied customers and a petition does just that.

The best thing we could all do to get moto to listen up is make this our last purchase of a moto device until they offer them with unlocked bootloaders. This along with a few other issues have pretty much insured this is my last purchase of a motorola phone. Companies of this size are a lot more likely to do something to please customers if they start leaving in droves, they'll come up with an idea like ... unlocked bootloaders to attract new customers.

Okay, so MOTODEV's text is a little different. MOTODEV references "future software releases", while the AndroidPolice text references "across our portfolio of devices".
Of course, that difference only affects users who never get any future software releases, since they're not going to get an unlockable bootloader in a new software release if there is no new software release.
I dunno about you, but I haven't received any software releases in or since late 2011 that _didn't_ include an unlockable bootloader. I guess only the Bell XT860 users in this forum have had one such chance go by unaddressed.
Anyway, it's certainly as qualified a statement with a projected start date, which people seem to have mentally morphed into some kind of promise with a due date.
Nothing here that'd make me drop Motorola as a brand. That said, I _would_ choose a four-row keyboard device with an unlocked bootloader by preference. But not because of any promise or lack thereof of an unlocked bootloader in the ephemeral future.

Maybe this is Motorola's "plan" for providing an unlock solution. They're just going to send out one unlocked phone into the wild and we have to find it! It's kind of like the McDonalds monopoly game except when one person wins, we all win.
I for one will not buy another motorola phone simply because of all the hype. Had they followed suite along with their competition and at least released current statements (or something) regarding the issue, I might have a different opinion. I purchased 2 d3's and 2 dx2's ASSuming we would be able to unlock these things. I have since ordered 4 G-Nex's to replace the moto's. They will be completely taken out of circulation simply because I can and it's my "right" as an american to do so. As you can probably tell, I'm pretty ticked off about it. It's nothing more than the principle of it that's got my feathers ruffled. We bought them, if we wish to void the warranty, that should be our business. I've signed the petition (#1654). Maybe it will help you guys out in the future. But I'm also of the opinion that moto doesn't care all that much for the small group of us that have a voice. I guess I don't have to support them as well.

Indeed, seems more like a bait and switch and leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. I know they didn't really say they would be unlocking all their bootloaders or anything and the XOOM does seem like progress but I was hoping for a little more of a flood or something like s/e offers with a bootloader unlock offered on their websites for phones that are shipped sim-unlocked (operator allowing).

using warranty to get another phone?

Hi guys,
Due to some charging issues I have, I decided im going to warranty out my phone. I remember reading some people managing to get a different phone through warranty.
whats your experience on this? When I worked for AT&T they usually never sent different phones unless the phone was extinct.
what do you guys think?
If you were with Verizon, no chance. You get a refurb of same model.
You have to have a few phones replaced before they will typically send you a different phone. I went through 5 Droid Erises then they sent me a Droid 2 but I.had to purchase the battery and back.cover myself.
While they don't commonly send you a different phone, it does occasionally happen. I am on Verizon.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
yeah with verizon they'll only give you a different model if they are out of stock on the one you have.... and they'll pick the replacement for you.
your only shot is to call customer care a few times reporting issues with your phone. after they"ve logged your calls("complaints") a few times then proceed telling them that you're ready to cancel service. at that point they should be willing to work something out with you.
Coming from the Fascinate, I recall some people getting the Incredible 2 or the Charge as a replacement for it.

Its kind of funny that you mentioned threatening to cancel your services. That's what I did to get them to send me the Droid 2 for my Droid Eris. Even after they originally agreed, they turned and canceled it once and then I really went off on them for trying to break their agreement.

What exactly did you think they were going to offer you? Be happy they gave you another option. I had my Droid Eris for 9 months and went through 5 of them and had to threaten to cancel my contract to get them to give me a Droid 2 around the time they were releasing the Droid 2 global and already gave up on the Droid 2. They're not going to give you one of their top notch phones. If anyone thinks they will get a razr or nexus as a replacement, stop kidding yourself. Be happy they offered you the Charge and not the LG Revolution. The revolution is what I would expect them to give as a replacement, and I highly recommend avoiding the revolution even though it does have an unlocked bootloader. If you do get the revolution, you will see that having an unlocked bootloader isn't all what some people think it is.
If you want the Razr, I suggest waiting until the newer Razr comes out before using your warranty. Once that comes out, they may be willing to give you the razr as a replacement but right now that wont happen.

Ok, so I asked some of my handset design guys at att and what I am being told is that this is AT&T's version of the RAZR, and late to the game as usual.
The bootloader is locked, and it is the same style lock as the A2 in that it is not going to be unlock-able with an e-fuse like the RAZR was, oh and the rumor is that they (AT&T) will not release a dev version of the phone, just like the A2.

The bootloader is locked, and it is the same style lock as the A2 in that it is not going to be unlock-able with an e-fuse like the RAZR was, oh and the rumor is that they (AT&T) will not release a dev version of the phone, just like the A2.

Not Moto, but AT&T that is in charge of this fubar.
That is the thing, if you notice most of the time there is a way to unlock most phones on the Verizon network, and almost always on T-mo and sprint, but AT&T is VERY funny about being more locked down. That is one reason they are always late to the game, they do NOT want anyone to have access to the kernel or radio for fear of reaking havoc on their network.
Go figure!

Either way, I would have never planned on buying the Atrix HD simply because the battery is non-removable. That is a giant no-no in my book, especially considering how battery-hungry today's smartphones are.

I was under the impression that it was Moto who was the entity behind making the bootloader unable to be unlockable. So, I guess AT&T and Moto are in cahoots in keeping things as "developer unfriendly" as they possibly can?

Yeah sort of....
Remember that in the US the carriers have all the power, and the hardware makers get the "privilege" of being allowed to design and release thier phone for the Wireless companies.
There was a link I posted many moons ago on how AT&T brings a phone to market, and how the request for a phone with certain features is sent out to all of thier vedor supply chains, and then they get a mockup back with a basic spec sheet, then from that they decide which one (vendor) fits the bill best. Then they refine the final requirements and it gets a final prototype built.
The above is the reason all the carriers carry "similar" phones with different names and some different features.
Here is the link again:

Makes sense now. Thanks for clarifying!
Does anyone know why Moto didn't release a razr maxx like battery too?
Well from my understanding... the atrix hd will be just fine with the battery it has in it... look at the HTC one X it has a lil bigger battery inside and i mean just ever so bigger, and runs all day no prob. the s4 CPU uses less power and pack a bigger punch. i would know i own one. but if you can go into a store and check one out i would. they are pretty cool!
looks nice i rly enjoyed the og atrix so many roms now my dad has it. longest i ever kept a phone.
nfc?
guys any idea if the atrix hd supports nfc?

Three time loser

I am very disappointed . my android experience has been nothing but a headache... I have had a Samsung continuum, Droid x2 and now the Droid bionic.. ALL in which have been left out in the cold by VERIZON... It just Burns me up that I finally thought this device would be the one to finally get special attention but ha I was wrong... It was a flagship device now it's just a ugly stepchild... next thing you know this device won't get OFFICIAL ICS anymore. I wish just once I would luck out on a device for once. Feel free to let out your android woes I was just venting a little.

To the contrary, I am very happy with my Bionic. It ran fine on stock .905, but I have flashed the .232 ICS update and it's even better. I think it is extremely likely we'll get the official ICS update. I don't think the phone needs special attention. It stands on its merits and I don't think I would be happier with a Razr, Galaxy, or some other phone.
I can understand that but by special attention I meant bootloader unlocking.. It is a good phone though.

Yeah if Moto doesn't step up to the plate and unlock the Bionic I will be pissed off. And I will vote with my wallet when it comes time for another phone! However, I honestly believe ICS is not too far off into the the future and the .232 leak is quite nice.
As I recall everyone always knew Bionics bootloader was locked and no one ever promised it would be unlocked.
Unfortunately I didn't know so I guess I'm that 1% who didn't..

Dougau - your recollection is faulty, and your post is pointless and unnecessary. Moto did announce that they would
unlock the Bionic bootloader.
We have kexec, overclocking, and a crap load of roms!! Official ics WILL be here. Did I mention safestrap? Isn't this enough support and development?

It is the most development I seen on any other phone I had. I wasn't bashing the developers It was towards Verizon. If I didn't make that clear...

The second part of the post was unnecessary, apologizes to all. Link to where Moto (or Verizon) officially announced the Bionics bootloader would be unlocked would be greatly appreciated.

They never did. They were ambiguous on whether it would be unlockable or not. Some people took that ambiguity to mean it would be unlockable.
I for one Love my bionic. I'm also in the 1% not knowing about the locked bootloader but I blame myself for not researching that before I purchased the phone. I'm rooted and on ICS .232 and LOVE it.I don't need to be rooted. I had CM7 on my last device but ICS is everything I wanted and it works so smoothly. Plus it bumped my clock speed up to 1200Mhz. Honestly the specs on this phone is top shelf and was free with a 2year contract (got it June 28th). No other phone was priced this way that was 4g dual core with a gig of DDR2 ram except the LG Lucid ($30). My only complaint is the screen. 720p resolution would have been nice but for what it is and what I paid I could not complain.
Your in the same boat as me I also did not research about the bootloader... So I blame myself also on that part.

I came from a HTC and may go back to HTC or Samsung when the time comes, but I've got almost 14 months till I can upgrade and a lot can change in that amount of time. For now I don't have the upgrade bug. The Bionic works terrific for me. Well, thats a lie. I want the OTA ICS update lol... but don't we all.
