[Q] - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello people,
I recently installed GalaxySense Rom (Search "oozeroo" on Google) for my Samsung Captivate AT&T, and it was working fine, until I changed a few settings, then it said it was going to Hot Boot, so the hot boot worked fine. Then, I turned off my phone and turned it back on, and it does not boot. I tried some stuff (check the Situations). My phone is stuck at "Galaxy S Cyanogen(Mod)" (Picture Included!!!)
Situation:
-No Download Mode
-No recovery mode
-Flashed this rom with rom manager (wiped dalvik cache only)
-TRIED installing Clockworkmod recovery, but wont work (not booting into recovery)
-Only an internal SD inside phone, 14 Gigs.
(Ask me for more info if needed please)
Thank you so much, and please help.

What key combo are you trying for recovery? You have a JIG laying around? If not, I'd go get one regardless of how invincible you think your phone may be. Maybe you could try Adam's one-click unbrick. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153310 I don't know what conditions need to be met for it (your phone) to be recognized, but I'd give it a shot anyway.

I am using:
take out battery, hold both volume buttons, plug in USB, then put in battery, all with both volume buttons held the whole time.
No, I do not have a jig, I want to get one though
-I do not care to erase everything I have, I tried using Odin3 one click downloader, it worked for me once, when my phone actually went download mode

remove sim and microsd. You have to have your batt back in before you hold volume+- and insert USB
what recovery key combo you using?

still nothing buddy, tried your technique
thanks dude
i did try returning it, but they didnt accept it (costco), NOT because I had another romm installed... but because it wasnt booting!
-although, I do not have the battery sign show up, it just has the circle, then it goes to galaxy s screen

Dont have linux

post as much as you want on this thread, i dont really care
any other ideas?

Well..... has galaxysense been actually ported to the captivate yet? I doubt this'll work but.... try vol down + home + power. You could vary vol down with vol up for recovery mode as well. Like I said.... doubt they'll work.

It has ported to captivate, there is a captivate section on website
Home button? you mean the touchscreen/virtual home button? When do you press it:when it lights up?
-btw, i tried the brick fix thing, but it didnt recognize my phone, because it was only booting

There's a reason I didn't think it'd work lol. Those are i9000 key combos lol. Get a jig imo.

what are the sgh-i897 combos?
can you go into safe mode with this?
and my home button question please?

Yeah I meant that virtual key. cappy combos are vol up/down + power for recovery mode for me.

no recovery for me
actually, at first, I had no recovery on my new rom, so... (I dont want to tell you this!) but I looked for a stock recovery, and I put it over the old recovery file in the system.

Do you know if you flashed 3 button? try vol up vol down power. hold those while inserting usb

nothing dude yet, i did not flash the 3 button fix, (oops!)
i did notice that, when the phone is booting up, and I connect, the phone is half recognized with computer, and yes I did install drivers.
If i go to device manager, it says Captivate, but with a yellow exclamation mark

have to go to, talk to you tommorow morning!
thanks buddy, i appreciate it!

I wonder if it'd be recognized by ADB if you install Nexus S drivers. try using that as the drivers for the marked captivate in dev manager. http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html#
If it changes name to Android Composite ADB interface, then you can ADB into recovery and reflash. I don't see how but if you don't have a jig.... might as well try.

(just raised your thanks meter!)
can I cut off an old charger that fits the captivate, and use that?

For a JIG? Possibly. You have to jump pins 4 and 5 with 300k worth of resistors. if you look in my sig, there's also a guide to just making one without a USB. Regardless of how you apply the resistance to your phone, you still need 301k. There is a window. I've seen 294k jigs work, so just as long as resistance is in a certain range across those two pins, it will work.

ok, thanks
I tried adb rebooting, but says error device not found
(same thing happened when my device was working and on)

[Q] Captivate With I9000 Firmware Stuck in Recovery Mode

There have been those that run into problems after installing the XXJP3I9000 update on the Samsung Captivate and attempt to reboot into recovery mode. The issue that they have is that since the Captivate has no physical home button to select an option like you can with the Galaxy S, you can't select an option, and therefore you can't reboot your device regularly. While I am in this same problem and have not figured out a solution, I have started this thread to post what knowledge I have about this issue so that others may help get this issue figured out. If anyone has information on how to fix this problem, please comment below. Let's fix this!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First of all, the key combinations that standardly would work with the original captivate firmware will not work anymore. Pressing all three buttons (Vol+, Vol - and Power) will only power cycle the phone, that is, until you let up on the buttons. Pressing Vol+ and Vol- and then plugging your phone into the computer will also do nothing. (By nothing I mean will take you back to the recovery menu)
Every key combination will only take you back to the recovery menu, so key combinations seem to be out.
If you boot into recovery mode, take out the battery and put it back in, all the while keeping the phone plugged in to the computer, the phone will enter the "POWER RESET OR UNKNOWN UPLOAD MODE", which will show your device in windows as being a Samsung USB Composite Device and a Samsung Mobile Modem (gadget serial, Windows 7) While this may be helpful, you cannot run ODIN or ADB in this mode, nor does this allow disk access. If you have Samsung Kies installed, it will detect a device, but will never complete loading it.
Other information with this method: On the phone screen, as well as showing "POWER RESET OR UNKNOWN UPLOAD DEVICE" the screen will also show the following in red:
RST_STAT =0X1
PMIC_IRQ1 =0X0
PMIC_IRQ2 =0x0
PMIC_IRQ3 =0x4
PMIC_STATUS1 =0x40
PMIC_STATUS2 =0x2c
If this helps anybody, it was a pleasure
Another method I found briefly was that after installing Kies, and rebooting the phone into recovery mode (again) my computer detected four new devices, two of them being Samsung Android devices and one being a disk drive. Potentially, without freezing or error, the drivers that are included with the Kies software will detect and allow for disk management while the phone is in recovery mode. Three of the four devices installed without error for me, but the fourth, the actual Android device, continued to say "installing device" until I unplugged the phone out of frustration. It has since not detected those four devices again, and I have yet to figure out how to do that again. The nice thing about that was that although the adb.exe reboot download command did not work, adb.exe did detect the phone. if this is true then rebooting normally or into download mode should be easy.
The last thing I noticed is that button furthest to the left on the main screen on the captivate will close the recovery menu when pressed, and leave the background behind, and then will reopen the recovery menu when pressed again. This is showing me that the four touch buttons are operable, but not configured. If it were possible to reconfigure the actions that pressing these buttons do, then it would be easy to be able to reboot the device normally.
I have compiled information to the best of my ability, and here is a question to ask, that I think will help solve the problem. Can the captivate with I9000 2.2 software run adb in recovery mode?
Comments, Questions, and Most of all, answers would be appreciated for me, as well as for other users with the same problem as I. Hopefully, this thread can be the solving point for this problem.
Many Thanks,
TouchofDestiny
An Update: The reason that the combinations don't work for me or either people is because they (and I) fail to install the captivate kernel, and that is making the volume power button controls useless.
same here i put froyo from the galaxy s i9000 and i cant change the rom or get into recoverymode because buttons dont work man this sucks and 3G or Edge doesnt work.....
You're problem is a little different. If you can't get into recovery mode, than that means you aren't in recovery mode, which means you can use ADB to enter download mode and use Odin to flash your phone. I have given up looking for a solution, and have sent my phone back to AT&T for a replacement. Since I'm still in my thirty day trial period, it doesn't matter if I used different firmware or not. Hopefully others won't get into the situation I had. For me, this thread is complete.
hi,
I solved the same problem doing this:
start odin.
take out battery. plug in USB. press both volume buttons. insert battery while pressing those buttons.
Done. download mode should appear.
yep, same boat
I am in the same position here. I downloaded the froyo leak and installed it with odin, no problem there. Upon startup into froyo, all was good, except my phone was stuck in horizontal mode until I tilted it vertical, *then* it would go horizontal. So basically I am 90 degrees off kilter. I decided to look around for another rom to try, and in the process managed to get stuck in recovery mode. Couldn't tell ya what firmware I have, just what is on the endless recovery screen that I cannot get out of!
I have no external microSD card, only the SIM card, and no way to get it recognized on my XP or win 7 system.
Really, really stuck here, guys. I do have the androidsdk installed, if there is a way to get it to reboot. As it is, adb cannot see the device, so I am looking at a truly bricked phone.
And yes, this is a US phone, which is why the power button and home button are not mapped (I assume).
I am DESPERATE for some help here!
and while I am at it...
I WAS able to get into download mode with the shovel guy originally by using the 2 volume keys+power, usb (odin up), battery in, release power.
No more. No key combo works.
Totally bricked the Samsung, which is supposed to be impossible!
when you are on the i9000 rom the only button that will get you in download mode is the vol down
That's HUGE!
You, sir, are a gentleman, scholar, and all-round smart guy! How did I miss that? I coulda SWORN I was getting into download mode with both volume keys. I've never been so happy to see a little Dalek dude with a shovel in my LIFE. 2 minutes in the one-click installer and now I'm back in business!
Thanks for helping a terrified owner out, and preventing a trip to the AT&T store.
I cannot go to download mode
I have the same problem here. Stuck in the recovery mode after upgrade the froyo and had the orientation problem. How do you go into download mode or power reset or unknown upload mode? Any button combination doesnt seem to work for me.
How do I do?
Please HELP. I am struggling here
Thanks
the key to the i9000 rom/kernel button combo is VOL DOWN + using the USB trick. do not press vol up + down, just the down while you are plugging in the usb cable
i too am stuck in recovery mode. the only way i can get into download mode is by using both volume buttons. just holding the down button just sends me to revoery mode as well. how can i fix my phone in download mode?
nevermind, reinstalled 2.2 and it works now.
Eureka I got it...I think
I installed froyo 2.2 i9000 on my captivate and got stuck in recovery mode...power button doesnt select and when I hold down the up and down vol buttons I couldnt get the downloading icon anymore either. Then I remembered something from another post....
Home + Vol Down + Power = Downloading Icon
It worked for me....let me know if this helped....I'm officially unbricked.
Hey. I'm in the same boat. My Captivate has I9000 firmware running it and it won't run properly. I can't access the settings to enable USB debugging in order to boot in either Recovery or Download using adb and no button combination works for me. I can't use button combos to boot into either Recovery or Download mode.
Does anybody have any idea what is going on and how to fix this?
JPBentley-- Since the I9000 firmware is set to use physical buttons, and the Captivate doesn't contain any, once you get into recovery mode, you cannot get out. The standard Captivate key combinations to get into download mode do not work, as do the combinations to get into download mode via the I9000 firmware. Basically, you get to a dead end. Unless there is some way to flash the phone's ROM outside of download mode, which I doubt, your best bet is to return the phone for a replacement. After haggling around with AT&T for a while, they admitted that installing the I9000 ROM doesn't invalidate your warranty, so they should take it back. They did with mine, and now I'm running the official Froyo leak. Good luck with your new phone!
SOLUTION
For all those that are having this problem, Ive struggled with it & tried EVERY possible button combination & nothing worked.
The ONLY solutions I have found is to use a usb JIG. Take out the battery, sim card & sd card, plug in the Usb JIG & put the batter back in. Give it a couple of seconds & I'tll enter recovery mode without pushing any buttons. You dont even need to push the power button, it's that simple.
Here is an image of how to make one if you are electronically inclined, personally I am not so I found a local electronic parts store & they put on together for me.
1.bp.blogspot.com/_3KjgtwnRiWM/TNTyjkZGquI/AAAAAAAABL4/7NSmqrYmkmU/s640/i900.jpg
If you want, you can also buy one online, I cant post a link becuase Im a new member but just search for "samsung usb jig" on ebay.com & youll find plenty.
shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=samsung+usb+jig&_sacat=See-All-Categories
yes, i think you need to build a jig or buy one online if you want to play with custom rom. you may not need it now, but you may need it just in case.
That's not even close to a brick. Are you using a usb port closest to the motherboard on your pc? Is your cable good? Make or buy a jig, that will put your phone into download mode.
Help, choose wrong phone for ROM Manger and now stuck in Android Recovery Mode
Help guys.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate I897. Last night I installed the Clockworkmod ROM Manager in there and was messing around with it.
I choose my phone model to be the the I9000 and then I went into recovery mode to restore the previous ROM, but guess what? It went into recovery mode, the volume up and down buttons select the menu items and it asks me to hit the "OK key" to enter.
The Captivate doesn't have an OK key, it uses the power button. So the Android Recovery Mode here thinks the phone is a I9000 and I can't get it to do anything other than reboot into that mode.
I've tried using the ADB to try to get back into download mode but it's no longer reading the phone. The volume + power buttons to go into that mode has never worked for this phone either.
I'm at a loss at what to do. Is there anyway I can get out of recovery mode and into download mode or back to regular phone usage here? Would I need to take it to an android developer?
Thanks for your help.
Shut off the phone, open up odin(DG's flash to stock one) hold the power and the menu button. Once you see the ATT screen release the power while continuing to hold the volume buttons. Once odin recognizes your device flash to stock using the utility. Once this works donate to DG for saving your ass. Also, quit using ROM manager. Just use the update.zip method everyone else uses.
+1 for just using CWM update.zip It is sooo much easier/faster.
Thanks, but it didn't work. My Galaxy S is one of those where the volume + power buttons don't work to get it into download mode.
I did try power + menu as you suggest, but that doesn't work either.
try this
1. open odin.
2. With phone unplugged remove battery
3. with battery removed plug phone into pc via USB
4. with battery still removed simultaneously hold down Vol. + / - (forget about power button just hold down the two vol buttons)
5. While holding down the vol + / - insert the battery (keep the vol buttons down and hopefully DL screen comes up)
I cannot stress this enough.
Also, OP, if the above doesn't work, it might be USB jig time.
pwr isn't used to go into dload mode - that would turn your phone on.
Do this:
Open odin
Remove bat, sim, ext mem card
replace bat
hold vol -/+ and plug in data cable to computer
(should be download mode)
If that fails, then get yourself a jig... gotta search for the thread though - should cost a couple dollars. Then once you're back up... look up the thread to fix the 3 button combo.
You might try turning the phone off then hold VOLUME DOWN and POWER (not vol up/dwn/pwr) to get into download mode. Make sure to remove the sim and sd cards.
I bricked my phone over the weekend and had similar problem you did.the easiest way too get out in to download mode is a jig. Its easy and cheap to do.look on you tube under un brick captivate fort a tutorial.
Once you learn that trick you are on stock for like 2 minutes before you flash
Yeah I'm kind of a lurk but I've been around for about a month just flashing everything, and I had no idea it could be done like this till today. Going to make my next one even faster.
Nothing seems to work.
I'm going to try the jig method Wednesday morning. Wish me luck!
I tried the jig and it didn't work.
What happened was that it got me back into recovery mode, not download mode. Tried it several times. So unless I'm hitting the wrong points on the phone usb plugin (other than the last two), I'm hooped.
I tried the direct resistor wire to points in usb plugin method. I didn't try the one where I cut open a mini-usb cable and use the plug as a dongle, although I think it may get the same result.
What do you guys think?
[q] help w/ captivate????
ok guys i'm definitely a noob at this but i think i messed up this morning downloading the gb drivers for my captivate. i was running serendipity 6.4 and i was trying to flash serendipity VII. i didn't flash back to stock 2.1 eclair with odin one click before i followed the instructions on downloading the new drivers for the gb. i went to the power menu on the 6.4 and hit download mode and plugged in the usb. it went halfway through the downloading process and stopped. my screen was blank without the downloading sign anymore and on odin it was at a halt. i waited for about 45 minutes for it to proceed and nothing so i unplugged it. when i did the factory recovery screen came up and i could use the volume up and down buttons to scroll through the menu choices but it wouldn't let me use the power button to make a selection at all like the power button wasn't working. i pulled the battery and put it back in after a while and now all i get is the galaxy s gt-i9000 samsung screen and nothing else. it wont let me back into recovery or download mode no matter what button combo i try. did i brick my phone and is there a way for me to fix this without having to buy another one? any help would be greatly appreciated.( guys, i realized i messed up shortly after it was done and messed up that i should've odin one clicked it back to factory before i did this,but by that time it was too late.)
When a problem comes along, you must jig it!
You might want to look into buying/making a jig to get you to a place where you can repair your phone.
ok guys,the phone will let me get back into the recovery menu and but won't let me make a selection out of the menu with the power button and i still get the galaxy s screen but nothing else.
Please use more descriptive thread titles. Your title is useless to anyone doing a search.
Could you please quote/reply to these steps to getting into download mode?
From powered-off state, Hold V+/V-, insert USB cable
With battery out, Hold V+/V-, insert USB cable
From powered-off state, Hold V-, press & hold power button
If you haven't tried this combo yet, try using the home softkey in place of the power button with some of these combos - there have been reports of the power button getting remapped to the home softkey.
i apologize for the wrong topic but i have tried every way possible that is listed on xda and other forums to get into download mode with no luck. the only way i could is from the menu's on the roms that i had flashed before( cognition 4.5.3 and serendipity 6.4). i got it to work one time with the hold the vol. up and down buttons and the power button and inserting the battery and it never worked again. all i get is the charging symbol now,the galaxy s screen, or recovery screen. i did get it back into recovery and i tried the home soft button and nothing. then i hit the menu soft button and now it shows the android man and the exclamation point in the triangle. what can i do guys???
Just out of curiosity, when you're at the android man/exclamation screen, if you have odin up already and plug in the phone, does it recognize that the phone's attached?
If so, you might be able to use the odin one-click to get back to stock eclair.
i will try that and get back to you. hopefully it will work.
no sir. i plugged it in and the computer lets me know that i plugged in the usb but nothing registers on odin or the phone.
Hmm... I've reached the end of things I know to say to try. I'm assuming you've tried changing which port you're plugging your phone into on the computer?
Also, have you tried using adb to reboot to download? If not, get adb and use the "adb reboot download" command (I think...) to see if that gets you there. You may need to be in the recovery menu (if you can get back there), or the exclamation point / android guy might work, too.
Although, if you can get back to recovery, you might be able to mount your phone to the computer, drop a copy of CWM on there and reinstall that so you can have more options available to you.
Your best bet at this point might be to buy or build a jig. That should hopefully make the phone go into download mode so that you can get to where you need to be.
ok, now i'm a little confused. i've been sitting here with my phone in my pocket not messing with it. i pull it out of my pocket and it was off. i held the down volume button and the power button at the same time and it immediately started showing download mode. now i'm not near my computer with odin on it to flash it back to stock. lolol. this is depressing. now all i can hope is i can make it back to my computer before my battery runs out. i say this because my phone has always been hard to use the button combos to get it into download mode.
if i can get odin to flash it back to stock,i'll master clear it. question is should i root it again before flashing the GB bootloaders to install serendipity VII?
Nope, root isn't needed to flash that ROM.
Good to hear there's a glimmer of hope. If you do manage to get there, you might want to make an EFS backup before moving any further, just so you have one more tool in your arsenal of preventing phone problems.
After reading this whole thread I think your problem is that you now have gingerbread bootoaders and your button combos have changed and you don't know it.
i think you may be right about having the GB bootloaders. now first question is how to i manage to make an efs back up? secondly, if i have the GB bootloaders then what do i do to flash the complete serendiptiy VII onto the phone? the reason why i ask is because the phone just quit downloading the flash in the middle of the download and that's when all hell broke loose. lolol. but you guys are right. i might just have a glimmer of hope.
If you do have the GB bootloaders, you should (theoretically) be able to get to download mode with the volume - & power button combination. This may take a little fiddling to find a timing after you've started the phone to find out when you can get to it.
As far as flashing Serendipity, you could try, but my advice would be to try and get to stock Eclair first and then go forwards. You're in a place with a lot of variables, and stock Eclair would be as variable-free as you're likely to get.
As far as backing up the EFS, under the CWM recovery menu, there's an option to make a nandroid backup. That's step 1. Once you've made the backup, just copy it from the clockworkmod folder to a safe place.
well i've got an update now. got everything back to factory 2.1 eclair and then i did a master reset in the phone because now i can't get into the recovery menu or the download menu and one click root will not work on my phone now at all. it keeps saying failed.
+1 on the jig...odin is very finicky and a jig will get you to download mode when you need it most...
buy or make one...worth every penny.
I think I just bricked my phone
I recently got a Captivate for my sister and decided to root it using AIO program from the development section. After rooting the phone and installing CWM I tried to flash Apex 9 ROM. Since I'm used to my Inspire ROMs that will automatically wipe the phone before flashing I flashed it on top of the Stock ROM which resulted on the screen becoming glitchy. Removed the battery and tried to reboot the phone but it just keeps on bootlooping. Tried to start CWM but the phone won't do it. Tried getting into download mode by holding the volume up + down button and plug in the usb cable but it freezes. I'm desperate. Has anyone else experienced something like that before?
How can I get in straight into CWM? If I could get there I could just wipe the data and flash a different ROM and I know i'd be good. But right now I don't know what else to do
Before you do anything else, stop and read the op for the rom you're trying to flash. Apex 9.x needs GB bootloaders first. Try holding vol down while inserting the usb cord.
If this works, use odin1click and flash back to stock eclair.
Unfortunately, you learned the hard way that flashing a Captivate is different from flashing an Inspire.
Please, for the sake of all of the devs, mods, and more experienced flashers, please read the posts.
And get yourself a jig.
Yeah, sucks for me. I tried holding down the volume buttons. It just won't work. All I see is a a round sun, like when a flash website is loading, but nothing else happens. I'm reading about the jig but I already own a cheap micro usb cable, I don't have a solder. Why does it have to be so complicated? In the Inspire when something goes bad you just boot into CWM and do a nandroid restore but in this I can't even access CWM. Just tell me one thing. Is it fixable?
It is fixable, it just may take some legwork and a little money.
Have you tried taking out the battery, holding V+/V-, inserting USB cable, and then putting battery back in (that's the alternate froyo/eclair combo)?
If you hold Vol- and power (no USB insertion), you might get download mode (that's the GB combo).
Not working. If I plug the usb I get the damn sun. If I press the power button it will just start booting ove and over again. I think I just screwed up. I just can't understand how flashin a rom can mess up the download mode. Doesn't make any sense.
On I9000 gb bootloaders, volume down + power is download mode
My initial guess is that you may have gotten a phone with the 3-button issue. Before you flashed, were you able to confirm that download mode and CWM were reachable with button combos?
Just to make sure we've covered all the steps, what button combination did you try to use to get to CWM? The only thing I can think that's happening right now is that the kernel you're using is for Gingerbread, and because that's not lining up right, it won't let you get to CWM. That doesn't explain the download mode issue, though, which leads me to believe it may be the 3-button phone issue.
Something you might be able to try is to grab the Android SDK and use the adb tool to force your phone into download mode. It might take a few tries, but it's possible.
The other option is to buy/make a jig. That's pretty much 100% guaranteed to get you to download mode.
Gosh! 3 buttons issue! What other issues could this phone have? I have the worst luck ever!
I tried all of the buttons combinations: holding volume up and down and pressing power button, volume up only and power button, volume down only and power button. Volume up and down + pluging usb. And same with one button only. I think I might get a jig and go **** myself because this phone got on my nerves. But before, how can I use adb to force the phone into download mode if there is no phone-pc conection at all? The won't even turn on. Would it work if I use it while the sun appears?
I know this is exceptionally frustrating - I've been there myself. All I can say is to be persistent, and you'll get it back to good working order.
When you plug the phone into your computer's usb port, as long as the phone shows some sort of response (even if it's just the charge screen), it's likely to have a connection for data use as well. If you can get your phone bootlooping while you have ADB open, you might be able to issue the "adb reboot download" command in that brief window and get to where you're going without a jig.
One other item to try - One Click Unbrick. With this one, you'd start the phone up bootlooping and run it (I think). With any luck, it might get you somewhere you can get to download mode (or have a wider window with ADB).
And it probably won't work while the sun's showing, as it hasn't really booted up yet, although there's definitely no harm in trying.
Have you tried changing the USB port you're plugging into? It would be best to use one that's directly connected to the motherboard (not on the front of the PC).
Also, are you using a PC, Mac, or Linux machine?
Have you tried reinstalling the drivers on the computer side? If it's not recognizing it at all, that's one possibility. Another is a bad USB cable.
Broken Screen- unsure if rest of phone works
Hi,
A friend gave me their old i8190 which has a broken screen. They haden't used the phone in a while.
It makes a noise when I turn it on, and the softkeys light up, but the screen is broken.
However, when I plug it into the PC- it doesn't come up as a device.
I do not want to buy a replacement screen (cost around $70 US) to find out it's broken elsewhere.
How can I determine this- is there anyway to mirror what should be on the screen? The previous owner doesn't know
You can try to start it in download mode, flash the 3 button combo for recovery (and maybe a custom recovery), reboot in recovery and connect with adb. You will be able to browse the device internal memory and you'll know if cpu and ram works ok.
If you have a rom with usb debugging enabled by default you can run apps using adb (and take screenshots): http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4567904/how-to-start-an-application-using-android-adb-tools
Also check this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13326806/enable-usb-debugging-through-clockworkmod-with-adb
Well I'm a bit lost- I'm using the 3 button combo (Home+Volume up+ Power key). Is that combo correct?
Without being able to see my screen, how to I connect with adb?
It makes noises like my PC detects the device, but nothing comes up.
I do have special USB drivers for my I9310 installed- could they be conflicting or anything?
i8190 doesn't have the VolUp+Home+Power combination active by default. You have to start in download mode (VolDn+Home+Power, followed by VolUp) and use Odin to flash a patch to activate the combination for recovery (you'll find the patch here on the forum). If Odin doesn't detect your phone you probably have some other problems except the display.
After you flash the patch you can use VolUp+Home+Power to boot into recovery. When you are in recovery adb is active (even in stock recovery). Just type "adb devices" and you will see your phone.
I don't know about the drivers.
I keep trying the combo (VolDn+Home+Power, followed by VolUp) but it doesn't seem to show up in Odin. I don't need a patched Odin for it to work do I?
How long to I have to wait between VolDn+Home+Power & VolUp? And is VolUp by itself?
Sorry for the obvious question- but I've been trying for hours without any success.
You just need Samsung drivers for odin to detect your device, not sure if your special drivers is the problem, try downloading this one
Should be around 5 seconds, holding it any longer wont do anything so just continue holding if you're not sure, then just hit vol up only
Thanks for that.
It might be completely broken
I've tried two computers- installing the Samsung drivers, and using Odin, but the phone isn't showing up at all.
It's strange, because it sounds like it does work. I switched it on- and the volume buttons seem to make noises, and I even somehow took a photo.
What could be wrong? Thanks
I really don't want to throw this phone away.
Like I said- it seems to work (takes photo's) but nothing comes up when I plug it into any PC... I don't want to spend $100 on a new screen either, to find out it's broken.
Please help me out.
Yeah, it sounds like you should be able to connect it to odin. Have you tried different usb ports / different computers?
Remember to plugg cable to phone after key-combo.
