Engadget - Xoom Themes and Apps

Heads up, the Engadget app now works in landscape, and is more or less Honeycomb optimized. Still has the menu button down at the bottom though.

I wish that they had just said stretched for landscape.

unfortunately it doesn't work nicely with the site's videos... but it's much more pleasant now... still, videos are deal breaker, will still access through the browser (just hope they fix the UA detection redirecting to the mobile version soon...)

Pulse broken on update?

Just noticed Pulse no longer opens panes in the Honeycomb fashion after update to 3.0.1, opens like on a phone. Anyone else have this problem?

Same issue here.
same for me, no more fancy landscape layout
Everything is still the same on mine.
Mine changed to.
It still works in landscape and when I touch an article it shifts the whole feed down, and displays the article on top of the feed.
I actually like it better.
I hate the new setup. I liked having the side by side panes.

Ditto. I doubt this was intentional. But want the layout back to the it was before.
Yep, same problem. Did the update break something with fragment handling?

I seem to be getting repeated force closes with the updated version of Pulse. Anyone else experiencing similar issues?

Yep, update fixed the problem!
Much better.
OT: Kinda wish I hadn't updated it on my lunch hour though. Now I know that the fuel rods are melting down in 3 of the reactors at Fukushima. *sigh*

Just started using it not bad at all. I just wish it was a cross between this and thumb keyboard. This one feels just a little small in split keyboard mode

The process took less then 2 minutes from registering to downloading - have it now and about to install.
Looks ok.
I think Thumb Keyboard has a lot more functionality (directional keys, readily accessible punctuations, @ symbol, parentheses, .com key with extras [.net, .org, .etc) when longpressed and all other 'tabbed' symbols just require a longpress, too.
Just MHO.
Here are some screen shots just not a big fan of the full screen text input. Would also like split me keyboard in portrait.

Yeah, they definitely need to make the keys a little bigger.

I think it works great!
Hated it, went back to stock. Takes way too much realestate in portrait, my main viewing format.
Swyped from my HTC EVO 4G running Frost 4.0 using XDA app.

You are the first person I have seen that primarily uses their tablet in portrait.

haha me too... why would you need this keyboard if you are using it in portrait? wouldn't stock work well enough? just wondering.... but the whole full screen force thing is bad, thumb keyboard does it too by default, but you can override it.
Hey I am waiting to have my account admin approved on swiftkeys site, in the mean time could someone post the APK for the keyboard!?!

patience grasshopper. they are really fast about it, shouldn't be more than a few minutes. respect developers' wishes. if they wanted it out here they would have posted it here.
Trying it out now, so far I love the look of the app and it has been working great.

It needs some work still, I was on a closed beta (which I think I can admit), and of course, now use the open beta available on the forum.
But despite the issues with sizing and the alternate keys for symbols and stuff, the predictive text is still like the number one need when typing on a tablet, and it is so much more useful than stock. I don't use split mode atm, because of the key sizes, but I'm hoping I'll like that once they get it worked out.

The common theme seems to be the small buttons are an issue. Hopefully they will make th necessary adjustments.
I'm sure they will, it was among the first comments in the closed beta. I'm using standard layout for now.
Also, nobody can deny... SwiftKey's style on the Xoom is freaking awesome.

The nook color version works fine on my wifi-only xoom. I found the apk somewhere on xda.
is there a version that works in landscape mode? The fixed apk I got is only portrait and its a pain in the ass
Per release notes there actually was no tweaking done with the Xoom... funny thing is one of the changes was "Bug fixes and feature enhancements" lol seriously? No bug fixes for us!!
The other 2 where for the Mini and Honda compatibility being added..... like we definetly needed that :-/

I only use Pandora for a few minutes at a time but today I've been using it for over 20mins now, and I've NEVER had an issue with it playing on my Xoom. "Minimal Pandora W2.2" listed under "Pandora 1.5.1 based" is the one I use, not really sure if any others posted here work so don't quote me on any of those, enjoy! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824518.
I just don't want to have to side load an app. Feeling a bit jaded by pandora, amazon mp3 has been a good fill in for the time being though

Scrabble

Somebody please get this up and going for the xoom
I was about to side load it....see how that goes.
XOOM
Why bother? It's a POS compared to WordFeud.
I was just going to install this when I noticed the app doesn't install on Xoom. I must say this makes me really disappointed and brings a huge spotlight to splintered status of Android.
That said, I find it hard to blame Google solely. I much rather blame EA. Its not like they couldn't have made the app work on both platforms.

I side-loaded it. It works but not great. It is 1/4 screen and has graphical issues in the unused space. The music sucks too. I haven't gotten to play a game yet but the game does seem to run and the HC3.2 full screen trick will probably handle the screen size issues.

Can you post a link to the APK, I would like to give it a go even though it apparently only partially works. Or send to [email protected] Thanks!
Dan
I loaded it on my TB, haven't tried moving it to my Xoom yet...
It is disappointing that this new Free version doesn't support "local" play only... or play against the "computer."
Anyone get the apk out?

That would be warez, unless of course you are asking for the trial version. The trial version does suck a$$ though. See below.

+1 It is pointless for me, i just wanted to grab a quick me vs computer game to try it before i buy it.
There was a free version of scrabble. So that would not be warez. Anyone know where to find the apk in the file system? I can pull it from my TB or tab.

Google Chrome for GB

I have no clue who to thank for this but it should state it in the thread. But we now have Chrome browser for GB and it works flawlessly. Faster than Dolphin, IMHO. Also has embedded flash player. And chrome to phone plugin works like a charm.
Check it out and enjoy.

It does doesn't it. But thanks.

trying now,
edit: Hmm
I can't decide if I like it or not. It has some really cool features, and I like it a lot more than dolphin, but I feel like I've had less available memory since installing it and it's just... different. I may switch back to the stock and see if it frees up ram, but I think I'd like this a lot better than the stock browser if I used it more and got used to some of it's quirks.

Wordwrap
The thing missing from this browser as well as most (except stock browser) is the ability to zoom in on text and have it wordwrap to fit on screen. Other than that I like it.

I don't understand. Wordwrap? If i double tap, it wraps fine but if i pinch to zoom, then it doesn't wrap. Is that what you're talking about? Cuz, like you said, that's most browsers.
Double tapping will zoom in but only as far as the text is wide. If you want to enlarge the text more (old eyes ) it doesn't wrap.
In the stock browser there's a +/- buttons that will rewrap text to fit screen.
Oh, by the way, I was not aware of the double tapping thing, that will help me out.

Opera will do word wrapping even if you zoom in like you want to take spy photos of individual words.

UC BROWSER :good:
It's young, sometimes glitchy software, The scrolling Isn't as smooth as others, but generally about two seconds faster to load per page (for me anyways) and thats a lot and it very smoothly TEXT WRAPS no glitchy Double-Tap to zoom and format. Just pich and slide, text auto fits and re-sizes, I love it
also can fling left and right from page to page *cough*Iphone*Cough*
some video playback plug in incompatibilities but it'll come
Trying UC.
Chrome for GB starting in Chinese gives my spidey sense a tingle.
