Why is the market different in Honeycomb - Nook Color General

I got my NC running on Honeycomb off of the SD card and the market installed. But when I search for apps that I know exist I never find them. For example, Weatherbug. I have it installed on the device when booted on memory, and find it when I search for it. Boot on SD Honeycomb, nothing. Also, when I go to "my apps" all I see are the purchased ones, none of my free ones.
-Jim

Am I the only one with this issue or did I offend somebody

you offended somebody......
not
I have this issue with newer market version, even on CM7. Reason is, newer market version (the Metro UI wannabe) initiates a device check... if app dev utilizes device check, and doesn't enable the NookColor as a supported device, then the market senses the device as "unsupported." Pointless, but true

Thanks.
So is the end result I can't get the apps it doesn't find? I mean via the market, not side loading and such. It isn't worth it to me unless it's seamless.
You know, all I really want is to get flash to run, but I can't find a procedure to do that.

Honeycomb on the NC is nothing more than a tech demo at the moment, if you want to be able to seriously use your Nook you're going to want to use CM7. Since hardware acceleration isn't enabled in any of the Honeycomb builds that we have you'll never get flash working.

I see. Can you point me to the procedure it install CM7? Can I try it on an SD card before installing to memory?

The only one you should use if booting off uSD

And yes, running from uSD first and see if you like it or not.

[Q] To Froyo or not to Froyo... that is the question.

Hello everybody. I've never unlocked, rooted, or done any modding to a phone before... I'm also not much of a unix/linux guy, but have SOME familiarity with it.
OK, so.....
I've been doing some reading around this forum & am still confused about some things, and also have some questions I haven't found answered. I apologize if these have been asked/answered elsewhere, but I have tried searching.
1. Some terms are used in this forum that I am unfamilar with: adw, adm? jig?
2. After flashing to froyo, everyone has the same Android Device ID? So, how do you restore your own ID, I haven't seen this answered anywhere.
3. I've seen people mentioning phone batches... what is this info needed for? Mine is batch 1009 if that matters.
4. OK, so if you screw something up & brick your phone... you can use ODIN w/JF6 to fix this? There is no way to be unable to un-brick your phone, as long as you have ODIN & JF6?
5. I've downloaded the GalaxyS OCR software, but you still need to use another program to flash your ROM file over? Am I understanding this correctly?
6. Where do I get the ROMs for froyo.. and what is the easiest software to use for flashing the rom? I see people mentioning Cognition a lot, but they also mention some others like Axura. Is there a definitive comparison of the various ROMs someplace that I am missing?
Thanks in advance everybody!

Adw is a launcher
Not sure on adm
Jig is a device some have put together and used to recover from brick
2. After flashing to froyo, everyone has the same Android Device ID? So, how do you restore your own ID, I haven't seen this answered anywhere.
There is an app on the market android id changer. I believe you need to be rooted. Download app, click save id. When you load a froyo rom some will automatically use the saved id, others may not. In the case that it does not get same app load id, click change. Phone still reboot id will be changed
3. I've seen people mentioning phone batches... what is this info needed for? Mine is batch 1009 if that matters.
You should be fine. I am the same batch
4. OK, so if you screw something up & brick your phone... you can use ODIN w/JF6 to fix this? There is no way to be unable to un-brick your phone, as long as you have ODIN & JF6?
Odin will save you from just about everything. Couple things, only works on pc. Download drivers for the phone prior to flashing anything. Make sure your phone is recognized by the pc. Attempt to get into download mode. Pull battery, sim, external sd. Put battery back in. while holding volume up and down plug in usb while connected to pc. Screen should show orange guy with shovel. If works just pull battery to get out of that screen
Attempt to get into recovery. Volume up and down and per at the same time. When at &t screen comes up, let go of all three. A screen should come up with blue letters
If you can not get into either of these I would not flash
5. I've downloaded the GalaxyS OCR software, but you still need to use another program to flash your ROM file over? Am I understanding this correctly?
Yes

Roms can be found in the captivate development section. There are several froyo roms.
You install roms using free app, rom manager. Download app, open, top option says flash clockwork recovery, click and scroll to captivate. This puts an update zip on your sd card. Power phone off. Get into recovery, three button combo you tested before. Navigate in recovery using volume up and down, select with power. Scroll to reinstall packages. You may get butted back to the same screen, click reinstall packages, will take you to a green recovery screen. Reboot phone.
Find the rom you want and download, can be done directly on phone. Move file to the root If your sd card. Power off remove sim and external sd. Make sure your battery is fully charged. Open rom manager app. Click install rom from sd. Navigate to file, select clear cache and data. If you want to backup your current state there is an option to do so. Click ok, put your phone down, be patient. Couple minutes later you will be booting into your new rom.
Hope this helps

Personally... I don't know if everyone should be trying to install custom ROM's on their phones.
Alot of people have too many issues figuring out how to root, sideload enable, and then download ROM Manager to install a custom ROM. Then when things go south they don't know how to restore their phone and end up having to warranty it.
Doing any of the above will immediately void your warranty.
But... with all that said I'm running a "stock" Eclair OTA JH7 right now with a few tweaks - and I really can't say I'm missing all the "Froyo goodness" at the moment.
I've rooted and allowed non-market apps with CLShortfuse's One-Click Root program.
Then I downloaded a Lag Fix (RyanZA's OCLF) from the market... and the phone has been screaming along just fine.
And of course.. GPS still doesn't work - but at this point I'm used to it.
No issues with headphone's not working, or terrible battery drain, or the other myriad of issues you will find by installing the latest and greatest. So... rather than start in with the latest popular ROM - I'd just Root and apply a Lagfix and see how it goes from there. If at that point your really comfortable with flashing a ROM - go for it.

OK, so I've dipped my toe in & rooted the phone using TGA_Gunnman's "GalaxyS_One-Click_Root_All_Models"
According to the program, I'm rooted. Phone rebooted into that recovery mode & I chose "Reinstall all packages".
Phone rebooted as it's supposed to. Went into Market, all seems good, but I can't find this OCLF you mention. Searched on RyanZA, OCLF, and also "lag fix" but don't get any results... ??
Also, The AT&T programs are no longer listed under my applications manager, were they uninstalled by default? I still see a couple of AT&T apps when I go to view all applications, but can't find these apps to uninstall in the app manager section.
Thanks!
Bill
OCLF I believe had been taken off the market but I would not suggest using that program for anything other then rooting your f device
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
So it has... whats the deal?
Not sure why it was removed but I only used it as an easy way to root. The lag fix on that app was an ext 2 lag fix that is obsolete. If you are willing to apply a lag fix and want froyo read the cognition, perception, auxura, etc threads in development and decide which one you want.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
If you just want your phone to work, I'd suggest just doing one of the lag fixes and staying as "stock" as possible. There's a one-click root/unroot for the captivate for rooting. The rest is up to you. But, for me having exchange support for work is a must and Froyo works perfectly with my company's exchange set up.
If you're a "tinkering" type of person, then go for some custom stuff! I believe best way to learn is just go do it. Read through the development section for a week or so (post your questions in this section though... devs seem to be a little snippy lately) and have fun. Odin has saved me from bricking my device a few times. Like was said before just make sure you download and test working usb drivers and can that you can access your device from windows.
Good luck!

The market and some games access it. So with leaked froyo, when everyone has the same id it causes issues because there can be like a thousand people with the same id trying to download at the same time.
As far as the games,i never had a problem do I can not say which ones and what the issue was

AT&T applications are system applications and therefore do not show under the default application manager view. If you are still "stock", you would do Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>Press Menu button>Filter>All. This will list all the applications on the phone. Be careful what you try and remove if you do this. Remove the wrong system app and your phone will dump. Most system apps won't let you remove them this way, you would have to use ADB or Titanium Backup to remove.
Search and read. Good Luck!
iirc batch 1009 doesnt have download mode.
you should flash the one click that enables the 3 button download mode before you do anything...
then make a jig so that you can recover if anything ever messes up...
then go nuts and flash 10x a day.
Ah thanks for the info, that shows them. So, I havne't done a thing other than root the phone so far. I've been trying to find the 'lag fix', but haven't been able to. I have however found a lot of posting on how the lag fix makes the phone much faster, but also drains the hell out of the battery. Any opinions on that? That's really all i wanted right now, a faster phone & get rid of some AT&T apps. One of them seems to run all the time (I use my wifi a lot), is it safe to kill AT&T Hot Spots, or will I lose wifi connectivity if I do that?

The only lag fixes out there come with custom roms or kernals. Battery life depends on the rom but common sense would dictate if you are driving 100 mile per hr it will take more gas then going 50
I do not think you will have any issues killing at&t hot spots. It is gone from all custom roms so it can not be too important. Do not mess with anything google especially gtalk

Any suggestions on a ROM for someone that just wants to speed up the phone a bit & lose the ATT bloatware? Don't really care if it's 2.2, I can wait for the official to come out & be ROM'd up by the geniuses here

If you do not care about 2.2 a good starter rom would be cognition 2.16. You can get it here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786532
Click on get cognition here. It will bring you to a page with a bunch of links. Personally I would use the 2.16 without hsupa. If you never use bluetooth then it does not make a difference. This rom uses the voodoo lagfix. The only downfall is that everyone had moved to 2.2 roms do if you post questions in that thread I am not sure you will get much back.
If you are going 2.2 I would read and try this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=856877
Perception is also an option but from what I am reading I would not flash the latest update until it gets worked through some.

I am probably not the best to explain this but it is a faster upload and download capability that us not standard on the Captivate. Meaning if you have it, and the data in your area is strong, you should have a faster download/browser experience

[Q] Nook color won't boot?

I just installed update 1.1, then tried to use autonooter, I didn't actually get anywhere using autonooter(The nook wouldn't even turn on?), so I took the SD card out, now I'm stuck at the screen where it shows the nook N, and "contains reader mobile technology by Adobe Systems Inc." at the bottom..
Any help?:/
8 times reboot? CWR for restoring the stock rom? CWR for flashing froyo? There are many options. I did all of them before for fun.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Here's a couple options for ya'.
Nook Color Restore to stock
Flash back to clean stock ROM
On the plus side, it's almost impossible to brick a nook color, so one of these should work for ya'. Best of luck to you, mate.
~Q
Okay, I got it to boot up again with the 8times reset, and did the power+n.
But for some reason, now it won't let me re-register it? I get an error, and it tells me to reboot.
Anyway, can anyone tell me how to update to 1.01? The B&N site only has a download for update 1.1... I think that's where I went wrong.
Thanks a lot, guys

Go ahead and boot it up, then go in to Settings -> Device Info -> Erase & Deregister Device. Let it do it's thing, and after the reboot, you should be at 1.0.0. Go and head and register your device now. =)
After you're all re-registered, head over to here, download the update, then just skip down to "Installing the update" since you'll already be on stock.
Enjoy! =)
~Q
Thank you very much, trying it right now!
I love how helpful the community is. I really want to use autonooter to get android on my nook. I just hate that there wasn't really clear instructions written for people who are noobs at this.
I have another question, if I'm just going to use it as a tablet, do I need to register it with B&N before I use autonooter? I don't plan on using it to actually buy any B&N books, and I'm having trouble regestering it.
Glad to help, bud. =)
If you plan on doing some really advanced stuff like moving Nookie Froyo to take the place of the stock ROM on the eMMC, you really don't need to register. However, if you plan on just using ROMs off the sdcard and keeping the stock ROM on the nook itself (like I do), you probably still want to go ahead and re-register just in case. But, if you just can't get the little fekker to register, don't worry about it. It won't hurt anything.
I suggest you to try out froyo on SD card first see if you like it. When you have time, do read about the cwr in the development forum. It is very easy to flash different rom to NC by using cwr.

Just rooted my Nook Color to Honeycomb v4

Please excuse my ignorance. I followed a youtube tutorial and was able to root my Nook to Honeycomb. But now, i have no ebook reader and when i try to download one from the android market or it doesn't install. I successfully downloaded the kindle app from the amazon store but once it loads, it crashes sometimes just on launch and sometimes when clicking the free books the the kindle app came with.
Another issue im having is I have no clue how to access files on my SD card. Even if i connect my nook to the comp, it recognizes that a hard drive was connected but it doesn't mount so i can transfer files to and from it. Sorry for the noob questions.
Not sure if this helps but in "About Phone" the Kernal Version is 2.6.29-omap1. Build number is sdk-eng Honeycomb Nook eng.rbrune.20110131.162619 test keys
Thanks
Honeycomb port is just really in its infant stage right now, I would suggest you going to CM7 and familiarize yourself with all the settings before jumping to HC.

I am thinking you are having some terminology confusing. Putting on the Honeycomb build is not rooting; it is flashing a rom. You can root your factory OS, which will let you add things like the android Market and such. Since you are already at the point where you can flash a new ROM, you can just flash the CM7 build just like you did the Honeycomb build.
I agree with everyone. Flash to CM7. I tried Honeycomb but didn't like it. I had the same problem with apps not installing. For me, I had to turn the NC off after a download and back on to see the apps installed. CM7 is running awesome on my NC. I have both Kindle and NC ereader apps running without issues.

Since I'm on my nook on the xda app I don't have a link handy, but you need to flash a file called gapps (Google apps) after a normal cm7 install. You should be able to find the file linked here our in the cyanogenmod.com site.
After that, it should prompt you to set up all of your normal google accounts.

I used the method outlined in this post to get the Market and Apps:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
I noticed that some people had difficulty booting into Recovery Mode while installing the Apps package. I did too, so what I did was just continued to hold down the 'n' throughout the entire startup, rather than releasing it, and then gapps installed fine
I now find that I hardly boot to the NC OS any longer to use it, I just run the CyanogenMod almost all the time.

I was able to root my nook thanks to theunlockr.com. I followed those directions and was able to get a nightly of cm7 (which i ran on my device for 3 months or so). when i tried to update to the stable version I kept getting an error message that the file was bad...i forget the exact wording. SOOO enter me, and my awesomeness. I found tipstir.the-talk.net and an option to load honeycomb on my nookcolor (which seems to be running fine btw). Somehow during that my clockwordmod rom manager was missing. I hadn't yet loaded the gap pack so i went online to the android market and downloaded it. yay. I tried to 'reboot into recovery' to load or 'flash'...but it just reboots normally.
I have since found that the kindle app and aldiko (which is the only app i've found that will read my old sony ereader books) just wont run on honeycomb which makes it all but useless to me since i use this primarily as an ereader.
I dont know what to do to fix the situation that i've found myself in. I think i read somewhere that you can load cm7 on an sd card and run it...but how then would I fix the situation that i've gotten myself into?
yhea...i have just enough interest in these sort of things to get myself in trouble, but not enough practical knowledge to get myself out of the pickles. SO please help the lame and powerless!
Thanks so much
Mikaela
The most surefire fix is to make a cwm card, flash back to your stock firmware, then either use cm7 on the card or install it on your nook(emmc). Basically, treat it like you bricked it. There are quite a few threads that can tell you step by step how to do it.

Edit : go to the stickies tab and look, there's a thread with all the info you need
Have you tried to download Rom manager, and then download clockworkmod from within clockworkmod. Then reboot into recovery from Rom manager. Probally, just trying to help.

fix!
I went back to theunlockr.com and reset back to factory settings and essentially re-rooted the device from there. =) i dont know why i didn't think of that in the first place but *someone* pointed that option out to me. thanks for the help!

Nook HD Root for 2.0.5?

I just opened my Nook just now, I set it up thinking it was harmless. Unfortunately, just as I went to go root...I saw that there was a break or something? Does anything work on it now or do I need to play the waiting game again?
I don't know about the HD but there is a root for 2.0.5 that can be mod via CWM, and since this modified CWM is only working for HD+ you probably have to wait. Hopefully somebody will make a modified CWM for the the HD soon that's compatible. The current CWM for HD is meant for the CM10 which write changes to the sd card. So, yes you have to wait, unless you got the HD+ and not HD.

I'm more curious about just getting the google play store on it. That root?
Even for Nook HD, not HD+, your probably doesn't come with 2.0.5 out of the box. If you want GAPPS that much, and doesn't need to use Nook store yet, you can try to force yourself back to older firmware and then you can skip OOBE and then apply all-in-one mod. This should work for HD as well as HD+.
Damnit
Had Root working splendidly on 2.0.4 then Nook HD made a weird ring noise and said there was an update. I didn't want it and said no, but there it was after turning it off and back on again a few hours later after fiddling with GAPPS. I don't really want to factory reset, and have been searching for a way to reroot without bringing back to to previous version. So far it looks as though the directory just won't get made for some reason or another. On the plus side 2.0.5 does get rid of all those pesky multiple copies of every media file you have (but really on have one copy of)

Oops this was for hd, so I removed it. Mod may delete this one.

Right now it's only for HD+.
Just for kicks, can I ask why the HD+ has a working root and not the HD? Shouldn't it be the same thing since it's basically the same device and firmware?
I really hope the root for 2.0.5 on the HD is out soon. I'm not in any way a developer, so I am at the mercy of this fabulous forum. I just want the Play store and GAPPS. I'm not one of those who bought it just to put CM or something on it (as there seems to be many like that here). If I just wanted the Android experience, I would have bought a Nexus 7. However, I wanted a 7" e-reader that I thought I might add GAPPS to at some point. My iPad (or any 10" screen) is too big to read on enjoyably, IMHO. I can only hope that a lot of devs got this nice device for Christmas and will want to root it ASAP. Anyway, this post is now officially all over the place, so I'll stop the ranting. Merry Christmas to all!
I just joined this board to ask virtually the same thing and have the same opinion as you. I'm not a developer! And as a primarily iPhone/Apple user am pretty in the dark about rooting/sideloading/CM10 etc. I just bought a Nook assuming I'd either A. get Jellybean on it somehow B. be able to at least access the play store or even C. be content with the stock Nook experience. I think C would be the case if it had ANY games/apps. It's truly a worthless app marketplace.

The answer to both past users is the all-in-one root does work on the HD (for versions 2.0.4 and older). The reason my CWM root (which works on all versions) does not work yet on the HD is there is not a working stock CWM yet (it has different booting files). But there will be soon.

2.0.5 root for nook hd
Hey, guys noob here...Not too familiar with the Android platform...Im use to jailbreaking/unlocking Apple products....My question is, when I first powered up the HD, there was a critical update was that an update to a newer firmware for B&N? Is it possible to restore the HD back the firmware it came with ...All input with be greatly appreciated...Thanks
Leapinlar and bokbokan have released a root method that works for the HD on 2.0.5 now. It requires burning CWM to an sdcard and booting off the sdcard though. Check out leapinlar's thread.

At this point it's possible to restore the HD back a few different ways. The Nook comes with a backup of the out of the box ROM that can be restored via the Nook using what's called 8 boot loop. It's a failsafe that is tirggered when the device is rebooted 8 times during the boot phase. This can be done manually by powering off the device 8 times during boot, or modifying the ROM (/system) which triggers it.
Also as long as we have access to booting the device off the sdcard and access to the Nook's kernel I believe the device will be fairly open and accessible for us to do whatever we want to.

Actually, if you just follow some0ne's guide here, and install a decent launcher (I use Nova Launcher Prime.. gives you NINE desktops!), then you really will have no need for CM10 to have a fully-working rooted experience with the HD+. I'm hoping the HD owners get some love soon, too.. cause I'm aware that not everyone has the $320 to throw out for the 32 GB HD+.. (I personally couldn't settle for anything less than the FULL amount of internal storage, as the expansion slot will only take an additional 64 gb microSD.. or is that 48?_ I dunno.. too early in the morning to remember right now. ha.
For an IT pro such as myself, storage space is EVERYTHING when you're constantly downloading, installing, transferring files from one place to another... When I bought my HD+ 32GB, I also picked up a Sandisk 32GB Class 10 microSD to go along with it. (they were on sale for a mere $26!) I couldn't pass that deal up!)
Anyways, just do as some0ne says and you'll be livin' the "high... err I mean ROOTED LIFE" in no time." -- If you've got an HD+, that is.
Welllllll perhaps I spoke a bit too soon. Just went to run my titanium backup pro and it seems I'm no longer rooted due to B&N cramming the 2.0.5 update down my throat. wtf...

Yes, you need to reroot using my Universal Root zip and CWM. Look at my HD CWM thread linked in my signature.

Hey, so the root will work for nook HD then? if so, can you give me a tutorial on how to root it? I'm new to this and its way different than jailbreakimg an idevice! Thanks! I did look at the post u made with the zip files. and does rooting harm the nook in anyway?

It does not harm the nook. If you don't want it rooted anymore, just do the 8 failed boot procedure.
And if you look at my rooting thread I just walked someone through it last night.

These two threads would get you rooted HDs or HD+ with gapps and enough understanding to get started.

I think between them the instructions are clear, but understand this is still early in the process and it will be awhile before stuff is all plug and play. Feel free to ask questions, but don't criticize, people here are volunteering...
Technically speaking, Nook has Android 4.1.2 (JellyBean) on it, but B&N has limited some of the features. Rooting solves most of those problems, but requires some work arounds indicated in the threads.

Stock is not Jellybean. It is Ice Cream Sandwich (ics) version 4.0.4. But the rest is right.
