Miss my Aria - Off-topic

I bought the Aria in its first days, when there were only 2 roms not including stock!(CM7 and liberated froyo) and im glad to see tht this beast has come so far! Its little but it will compete! now i have a Cappy running at 1.6 GHz wish i still had my old aria...
Wish we could have achieved S-OFF sooner tho...
Sent from my Cappy at 1.6 GHz, V6 supercharger, KAK tweaks, and 3G booster using the XDA Premium App!

The Aria is a great phone! I've had mine since last July and have flashed every ROM that has come through the development section. Currently I'm running the Evolve AOSP rom that came out not to long ago, loving it.
Sadly my days with the Aria are coming to an end though. Due to some issues with ATT dealing with Tech support, Actual Service and Customer care I'm paying the ETFs on both of my lines, switching to T-mobile and waiting for my T-Mobile G2Xs to arrive today.

That's a bold move. Is it costing a lot? I've thought about it. And what do think will happen when the -- very unfortunate, but probably inevitable -- t-mobile sale goes through?

It's will run me about 180 dollars a line but I'm not willing to deal with ATT for the remainder of my contract. Besides the technical issues I'll be saving about 40 dollars a month on my plans and we get the G2Xs for free. Since I'm in the military I get a 15% discount and waived activation, so no up front costs besides the ETFs.
I'm hope that the merger does not go through, however even if it does at least I have a T-mobile contract for two years regardless of what happens. After the two years maybe things have changed.
One other thing to note, T-mobiles ETFs are considerably less. They start at 200 dollars, 100 for 12 months and I believe 50 for the last 6 months of a contract.

I'm jealous!!! I'm a former iPhone user who wanted to try Android and unfortunately I started with the Aria. It is an incredible slow phone that would have been perfect for my 11 year old. Thanks to AT&T and their lack of customer service, I'm stuck with this phone for another year. I've looked at everything to get out of my contract....nothing! Thank God for this forum for helping me screw with my phone (Root) and have a little fun with it. When I see the new Android phones out there I want to cry. I'm hoping I can terminate before my contract is up, since I don't want to wait 'till next July for a new phone and I am absolutely NOT re-upping with those Mother Bucklers at AT&T!!!!!! AT&T sucks!!!!!!!! Heck, I'll get a Tracfone before I go back to AT&T!!!!!!! Congrats my Military Friend, stay safe and enjoy your non-AT&T Phone!!!!!!!

If you don't mind me asking, what is 'Evolve AOSP?'
Gino

That's unfortunate. Its been my experience that All Carriers have their issues with things. I can't complain about att anymore than I could when I had t mobile or Verizon. In fact the only complaint with att was how slow they got going with Android..but they have an excellent selection of phones now and the service had been great for the two plus years i've had them. I've never had to deal with customer support though so I can't vouch for that...but I guess that's a good thing. As for the Aria its been a great phone for me since I got in June of 2010 and now it will be a dedicated work phone in a week when I finally upgrade.

You know, you guys made me think of a question.
What will become of your Aria after new phone??
Maybe someone can create a Console Aria ROM to run like a Sega Genesis or a DS!

I love my aria. But I am sad because most of the good stuff is HDPI. My aria expires next september, and I will keep it in the case for backup. And when next september comes, I will make sure I get a phone that can run MIUI.

Why carriers aren't offering early upgrade price for HD7?

So I was all pumped about getting an HD 7 and thought since WP 7is brand new to market, they would be opening up upgrade pricing to anyone. But, have come to find out, that's not happening. They can do it with iPhone releases and its just OS updates as WP 7 is. Someone tell me I'm not going to have to pay full price, especially since I got my HD 2 about 8-9 mths ago and was the only reason I switched to T-mobile.

Anyone?.....
I called Tmobile and they said they dont have any info until later this week. Cant wait! I hate my Samsung Vibrant
the hd7 is on O2 not t-mobile, this could be one reason they wont offer an upgrade to it.
You can buy it on pay as you go for £380 (really good price) or do what i did and sell your phone and use the cash to buy out the contract then get a new one (my dad bought my desire and I paid off my contract and still had some cash left to buy my wife some jeans and shoes).

Yeah, I called them too and they seemed pretty firm on not budging on allowing any kind of early upgrade for me (said to wait 6 mths and I started service with them in Mar. getting my HD2) at release time. They said I'll just have to wait until it comes out and could see what happens with them selling it for a lower\non-contract price.

It's on Tmobile here in the USA exclusively. I thought about selling my HD2, but I really want to keep that phone forever. I've sold every other one (sometimes not needing to) and everyone now and then I regret it. So, I promised I would never give up the HD2. It was the beginning of an era and the best thing winmo ever ran on.
Oh oops my bad i keep forgetting that there is a world outside of this tiny island lol

LOL! No, I totally understand and maybe $500 or so will be worth it. It's just the uncertainty of WP7 (although I'm sure I'll love it) missing some of the things I've become accustomed to.
The only time Tmo budges on upgrades is if a customer has been with em for more then 2 years or/and is over 14 months since their last upgrade and with that said all that depends on the rep/sup you talk too...only reason is tmo is coming out with so many new phones between now and Q2 due to the new hspa+ network....and if they continue to hand out early upgrades each time a new phone comes out we are losing a lot of money...also with it being around Christmas all tenure customers are calling in wanting full discounts....and when customers are wanting a full discount on a $550 phone before thier commitment time that difference comes out of tmo pocket....Tmo sells the phones not make em...
Remember you're not dealing with ATT or apple here so u cant really compare it to the iphone release....maybe u can call HTC and see if they'll switch it out for you lol im just saying...You made a choice of signing a 2 year contract 8-9 months ago to get a discount on the HD2....Tmo is out to make thier customers happy but everytime a new phone comes out we cant continue to hand out cause YOU feel its the right thing to do since u switch from a diff provider...They still have to run a company
And just so you know the only reason ATT offered the upgrade early for the iPhone 4 is because June 1st they increased their ETF to $375 so they were getting thier customers under this new contract policy by giving out early upgrades when the Iphone 4 released on July 27th
Sooo with all that said good Luck on getting that full discount...u might talk to the right rep and they will work it out for u

Man, you must work for them for sure Especially with the "we" references. lol and JK. But, I understand your point and I'm sure tmob makes that difference up in the price I pay for service Or else they would never offer or upgrade people early. And besides that, I don't even care if they update my contract and extend 2 yrs from the day they give me the discount. So, increasing my contract every time I do that would benefit them, I would imagine? And I don't want to change phones every time one comes out. ONLY a great one from HTC, which at most may be every year, as slow as we get things here in the US. lol. Didn't know the stuff about ATT and the iPhone upgrade, so thanks for that piece of knowledge. All I'm saying is, I can disconnect a line and add a line at Wal-Mart, for cheaper (don't really care what phone number I have), so Tmob might as well put that money in their pocket and save the hassle. I have 3 lines (all ready to buy a new phone) and still have 2 lines with ATT. So, it's no joke with my service and ATT learned the hard way about not keeping up with device releases as they lost a lot of people for simply not carrying and providing what their customer's asked.

T-Mobile Valentine's Day Sale

Anyone else taking advantage of their sale this weekend? All Smartphones are FREE with a 2 yr. contract. The wife and I have been month to month since December, so I think were gonna take advantage and pick up some new phones.
Pretty sure i'm gonna get an HD7, after seeing a lot of vids, threads, playing with it in store it seems like a really solid device and after using Android for 2 yrs it seems like it's gonna be a nice change. Originally wanted a Dell Venue Pro, but the HD7 will be FREE , and the DVP is having a decent amount of issues at the moment.
The wife wants to stick with Android, she'll probably get a my touch 4g..
Anyway..just seeing if anyone else is taking advantage of this sale
I would if I weren't an Even More Plus customer. I did however buy one outright and couldn't be happier. I am eagerly awaiting the first update, but even without it everything is grand.
Yeah we were on even more plus, gonna go back on contract though. I think their unlimited plan with 3000min is $150 right now
I can't go back on contract. My bill after taxes is $131. That is 2 lines, unlimited talk and unlimited data (believe it or not we don't text). Even if I want to add unlimited family text, it takes me up to $150 after taxes. That's unbeatable for unlimited everything on 2 lines.
I just buy phones outright now. I more than make up the savings, especially when you bring in the Craigslist factor.

My Wife and I got the HD7 this weekend and love them. i came from The Vibrant and she came from a blackberry
I convinced my dad to get an hd7 off the tmobile website
free...no rebate and it should be here tuesday!
i love my hd7
yep, took advantage of it...I got the HD7 the wife got a mytouch 4g...I tried to convince her to go for windows phone 7, but she stuck with Android.
Great deal none the less...phones were free and we got the special they're running on 3000 minutes, unlimited everything: $150/month
It was kind of annoying how much the sales people were pushing Android, they really didn't have anything good to say about windows phone 7...multiple times they repeated "yeah all the workers here use Android, we all have mytouch 4g's"
That sucks to hear. You'd think they'd be partial to all platforms.
Yeap, just picked up the HD7 from the T-Mobile site. Can't beat free. Got a Moto Defy last month that I'm enjoying but I guess I'll give it to the wife. That's if I can convince her to take it. She had a T-Mobile Tap for a bit last year and it left a bad taste in her month concerning touch screens. lol She's using a Samsung Gravity II now but I think I can convince her the Defy is better device.

[Q] Whats your next phone

Well I see that I am due for an upgrade on July 21st and am thinking about getting another device. I like the captivate but am wanting to get 4g as I will be going into 4g areas periodically and would like to take advantage of the speed.
Not sure which way to go. Get the Infuse for 149 in Walmart or the Inspire for 49 there as well. Wait for the S II to come to att. S II may be a bit out of my price range.
Att doesn't have real 4g, they just renamed their current 3.5g hspa network to 4g, a captivate will work just as fast as any other att "4g" phone.
The infuse is a bit too big imo and is based on last years hardware, the inspire is old tech too, i'd wait for the sgs2.
i want the sgsII but if the rumor is true that samsung will back down production of it in favor of the sgsIII to compete with iphone5 then ill wait even longer for that. my i897 is good enough so far but better save a bit of extra cash in the long run and get an even better phone
i maybe go for samsung infuse 4g or sgs II.
I have upgrade coming in December. considering how fast these things come out, the Infuse and SGSII will probably be old news by then. Definitely sticking with Samsung android. have had good experience with them.
My ATT upgrade is 5/2012 so I'll probably see what is on the horizon then. I think everyone underestimated how well the captivate would run gingerbread. This is actually the first phone I've had where I didn't sell it within 3 months. Well, I didn't sell my G1 but I did give it to my wife within 3 months. I'm not in a huge hurry to get rid of it.
If I did had to pick something soon, I'd probably go with the SGS II.
I am praying ATT gets the next Nexus device. I'd upgrade again this year for that.

I have an upgrade at the end of July. But I'm gonna wait and hope that att will get a nexus device.
I just really want android 4.0
Sent from my Galaxy S captivate
Waiting to see the samsung attain (att branded sgs II), should be out by the end of summer. I may also go ahead and get the sgs II international.
AT&T recently gobbled up Alltel in my area, so I'm in test-mode, trying to figure out if I want to stay with them or go for Big Red (or do the Walmart pay-as-you-go). I had a number of less than favorable experiences with Samsung in the last few years. My wife had a Delve that we replaced three times, and all of them were junk. The in-laws have a Rugby II that I'd happily throw in the blender (stupid PTT button!).
I hated the Aria that AT&T gave me, but I am a fan of HTC in general. My opinion has radically shifted with this Cappy. I love the deep black of the unlit OLED, and the over-saturated colors are to my liking as well. I'll have a hard time giving up my Captivate, but if I do, I bet the SGS II (or III, if rumors are true) will be the next pocket processor for me.
<<<<< Edit: Since I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan that AT&T is desperate to steal away from me, and they won't activate a 4G device w/o a data plan change, I may just see if I can find a SGS II.
Just purchased a Atrix today, I like it so far.

You are sorely misinformed about that. Have been speaking with att for the last several months now and every rep that I spoke to both in store and on the phone assured me once you have the unlimited plan they won't take it away as long as you stay with a smartphone. So it doesn't matter whether a 4g or 3g device you get to keep.
So if someone in the store told you that then tell them to go pound sand and get there facts straight
Still up in the air. May just wait till Sept or Oct and see what lands. LG is coming out with a 3d phone on ATT may look at that though I would think battery life would be sucky. Moto phones are not an option for me as I despise them for personal reasons.

Att should have a few Android devices we haven't seen yet coming out. They said 12 Android devices this year. I think we have only seen maybe a little over half of those so far. I am going to be shocked if their isn't another high end Android phone by Oct-Nov. I hope ATT gets the rumored Nexus phone.

I'll try to re-verify that. I have been told the exact same thing by four different store employees and two phone reps. No 4G for me without a data plan change. Not only that, but they are adamant (and I have confirmed this with a guy who bought an Inspire on eBay) that data does not work at all with a 4G phone on a 3G data plan. I need more information, I guess.
Ok just bought the HTC Inspire and I was able to keep unlimited data. There is a 4g unlimited data plan for those folks already on unlimited 3g data
SmartPhone Personal
$30.00 N/A Unlimited Current
SmartPhone Personal
Data Plan for SmartPhones. Unlimited domestic data usage. Only available for upgrades. Requires customers to be on a "Gold List" SmartPhone Plan prior to upgrade to 4G device.
So as I said Owen you are being told mis information. If you have a current 3g unlimited data plan you are able to upgrade to a 4g device and get the unlimited 4g data plan. I JUST DID IT
Awesome! I'll try harder next time. My unlimited plan is $20, and they really hate it, but I love it. You listed some exclusions, but if I stick to my guns, I should be OK. I've had a rough time with AT&T and my wife's unlimited BB plan. They have revoked it three times now, and I have to keep going all the way to their mergers and acquisitions group to get it fixed.
Sent from my Cappy using Swype and my middle finger.
You kept leaving out the most important piece of information the 20$ data plan. That is your issue. Of course they are not going to do. See if they will upgrade you to the 30 and then you will be able to keep if not then cie la vie and don't get a 4g device.
i have been trying to figure out this question for weeks. The only phone that i can image upgrading to would be the infuse and thats not really hooking me like the Captivate did.
id say wait for the SGS II...its just gonna be a phone i believe that would be a true value for your upgrade option.
I do have to say am liking the inspire alot GPS is spot on out of the box. Ran a 20 mile round trip on it and didn't wavier once. Locked on in 10 secs in the car and 30 secs in my house.
I am linking Sense alot too. Speeds are awesome. Now to root and find a rom for it.
Reason I didn't wait is I can't afford much more then what the inspire was cost wise. I was reading alot about it went to 3 different corp stores in town and asked them what where people with captivates upgrading to and they said the Inspire. Infuse is more money for not alot more. Screen is a tad bigger both phones have screens almost identical. Came down to price. HTC seems to push things quicker for updates.

Will Verizon have the Samsung Galaxy S II or a decent dual core 4G Android soon?

Sprint has HTC Evo 3D and Samsung Galaxy SII
T-Mobile has G2X, HTC Sensation, MyTouch 4G
Verizon has... well, the Bionic
I really want to stay with Verizon, they have the best network and the absolute best more reliable network.
So, anybody knows if they will have a decent dual core phone any time soon?
I need
1) descent screen. Super AMOLED cool, but any phone will do. HTC and LG usually have good screens. I love the screen of my G2X for instance
2) 1GB of RAM, or maybe even 728MB, but preferably 1GB
3) At least 1GB of space for apps, I believe that is called Internal Storage
4) 4G. At least >= 4000 kbps/s inside malls
5) Nvidia Tegra >=1Ghz would be nice
If you Google it you will find that VZW is not going to sell the GSII because they don't think it has enough to compete with the IP5 when it drops. They have a newer offering from Samsung called the Prime that they hope to have on the market in time for the holidays. Possibly as early as next month.

Well my main concern if I switch to Spint is that I will have to pay around $80 per month or something like that
I don't have a problem with having two carriers within the family, but with Verizon I only have to pay a cheap $50 per month price
I like the fact that Sprint has the Samsung Galaxy SII, the HTC Evo 3D
They even have a Motorola Dual Core as well
All 4G, Dual Core, nice screen, good RAM
So 3 devices vs 1
From what I am reading, if I use this phone from Verizon, I will use it for at least 6 months, till January or something
I know how technology works, and how long it takes for new devices to appear
example the GTX 600 series will appear in January, AMD Bulldozer still hasn't arrived, Intel took forever to fix their motherboards, and 6 months after they released the Intel Sandy Bridge, they were still releasing new chipsets
Here is how much it will cost me to switch carriers for the next 6 months
If I stay in T-mobile and stay in no contract
$120 every month.
Total: $720
If I move to Sprint
$90 per month
I need to finish paying $350 to T-Mobile for the phone, Let's say I sell the phone in $200, $150 out of my pocket
$250 for the Samsung Galaxy S II
I still need to pay July and August to T-Mobile, so add another $240
Total: $1180
If I stay in Verizon
$50 per month
I need to finish paying $350 to T-Mobile for the phone, Let's say I sell the phone in $200, $150 out of my pocket
$350 for the Droid Bionic
Let's say I sell the Bionic for $350, let's say the Samsung Prime is $600, so $250 out of my pocket
I still need to pay July and August to T-Mobile, so add another $240
Total: $1290
In theory I want to stay with the cheapest one (T-Mobile), but again, I don't like them
I had no-contract plan with them, but now those plans are no existing anymore.
So I can't drop down to the $99 plan I had before, freaking idiot$..., they told me the ONLY way to drop my price is to make a new 2 year contract.
So if I want to cancel with them I have to pay them a ****load of money since I am still paying the phone
So even if T-Mobile is the cheapest, I wouldn't trust them with my credit card or bank account anytime soon, so I won't stay with them no way
I think I'm going to stay with T-Mobile, and then someday try to switch to Sprint
If I can switch to Sprint this week, that would be great.
If I can't, then I don't see what's the point of doing this deal with Verizon. I am 110% sure that I don't like this phone
now, with T-Mobile I had no contract, so I had the ability to go up/down in plans. Now those idiot$... removed all those plans, so they respect my rate but they won't allow me to upgrade/downgrade
So another nasty tactic would be to allow T-Mobile to send us to collections and hopefully we can go to court and explain to the judge that they can't destroy my plans, and then expect me to pay $120 forever
They actually want me to pay $120 per month, for 2 years (until I finish paying my phone), because those idiot$.. just say they don't have no-contract plans anymore.
So screw them, I haven't decided yet if I can sue them or if it's even worth my time
Anyway, if I just forget about them, maybe throw them a bone here and there, here are my new estimates
If I stay in T-mobile and stay in no contract
$120 every month.
Total: $720
If I move to Sprint
$90 per month
$250 for the Samsung Galaxy S II
Total: $790
If I stay in Verizon
$50 per month
$350 for the Droid Bionic
Let's say I sell the Bionic for $350, let's say the Samsung Prime is $600, so $250 out of my pocket
Total: $900
Now, my question would be
If Sprint and Verizon have good reception inside malls, Best Buy, Frys, Walmart... and the price is around the same
Which one would you chose?
My main problem with Verizon is that they only have ONE FREAKING PHONE that works with 4GB, and has a dual core CPU
So anyway, even though I hate doing this, tomorrow, if for some reason I don't sign up with Sprint, I am going to stay at $tupid T-Mobile.

Not worth it bud. You don't want ANYTHING remotely bad on your credit report, especially in these economic times. Creditors are looking for an excuse not to lend. You might not need a loan now, or in the near future, but you never know if an emergency comes and you get denied because of a not paid phone bill.
Just my 2 cents...

That's not even close to true. Verizon sees no point in selling the GSII because the Prime is the same phone except for the LTE radio and Ice Cream Sandwich (reported to be the first ICS phone).
The IP5 will probably be the IP4 running the iPad2's SoC and iOS5; the GS2 has been out for many months and can already run with that as can other devices.

Not worth it bud. You don't want ANYTHING remotely bad on your credit report, especially in these economic times. Creditors are looking for an excuse not to lend. You might not need a loan now, or in the near future, but you never know if an emergency comes and you get denied because of a not paid phone bill.

I know, but hey, not to brag or anything, but if I work hard I can make all the amount that I owe them (including the phone cost and the 2-3 months I will be behind) in a couple of days
The problem is that I have a NO CONTRACT plan with T-Mobile
Somehow I ended up stuck at $120 per month because those plans don't exist anymore
so they can't discount me or anything
From what I know, they do send you to collections after 3 months.
So I can screw them and after 2 months and 29 days just pay them the cash and shut their mouth
I just dislike companies being dishonest
If I have NO CONTRACT how on earth did I ended up with such a high fee?
I can't even remove or add features to the plan, it's ridiculous

But do you know if the Prime will take another 6 months to arrive or so?
I can't stand my phone it's only being 4 days of use
Well, from the daily reading I've been doing it IS a superior phone to the GSII. It isn't even going to run the same processor! It is based on Samsung's in-house Exynos CPU at 1.5 GHz with 1GB RAM. It will not be using the TI processor like the duece. The phone has a metal body. That's right, a Samsung with a metal body. It will also sport a 2000 mAh battery. On the soft side, there's a new browser that is said to be leaps and bounds ahead of anything else on the market.
Obviously, this close together it isn't extensively different, but quite a bit so at e same time. The plan is to have it on the market for the holiday shopping season. Probably within the month or not a lot longer.
Your back? You said good bye already what gives chief?
Just a heads up sprints unlimited data will be going away soon enough. Or at most switch to a $30 unlimited so either way sprint will be going up

Based on my inside sources, the processor will be infact a TI processor, specifically the TI OMAP4460, and it will be housed in a plastic body to be released sometime in October, though that could change. Also, another tip: the official name of the rumored Prime has nothing to do with the word Prime or Droid, and that's all I can say about this rumored phone without getting into too much trouble.
Hands on reviews posted on-line dis-agree with your claims... I have been waiting since last year's CES for the Bionic. Waited thru all the delays/scraps. After 9 months, the phone looks to me to have landed with a resounding thud !!

I'm not saying you're wrong or I'm wrong, I'm just relaying the insider information I have. I have a friend who works for Verizon high up there, so I know his information is 100% correct and I've also seen the information myself.
Amazed nobody has mentioned this phone in this thread.

I'm aware it's out there but I've never been a fan of HTC products. Normally I really like Moto offerings but I am less than impressed with the Bionic. Especially after all of the hype surrounding it all year.

Well yesterday I went to Sprint and man that phone is absolutely gorgeous
However, my HTC Thunderbolt does a lot of the things about the same
Yes the Samsung Galaxy S II is thinner, and the screen a bit bigger
the MAIN difference is the screen quality, man NOTHING can beat Samsung now a days
However, I would like to know if there are news about HTC Vigor or the Prime
I am having a hard time figuring out why I should change to Sprint just for one phone.
Let's say Verizon does comes up with a phone that has dual core 1.2Ghz or 1.5Ghz in the near future, then that phone would be the best
the Samsung Galaxy S II was able to achieve 8000 kbps/s
The HTC Thunderbolt was able to achieve 16000 kbps/s
So, none of them is a clear winner, one has bigger more beautiful screen, but the other has faster internet
Anyway, I think I'm going to try the Samsung Galaxy SII, just because I bought the HTC thunderbolt cash, so I can cancel the contract, and I can go back to Verizon any day I want
Right now it's the time to test all carriers (I am testing all except AT&T which has a limited bandwidth for customers), and decide
My co-worker is amazed by his S2! He suggested I switch out of Verizon....Now! I laughed and told him my unlimited plan is keeping me with Verizon. He measured the speed of the phone and it was twice the speed of the bionic. Maybe that phone will come to the Verizon network as the Samsung Function soon!

I to went into sprint and played with the sgs 2 and it is VERY nice. I was thinking about returning my bionic and going with sprint also. I know the quadrant scores are for losers but I was able to get about 2400 with my bionic. I ran it on the sprint store phone and was able to get repeat 34-3500 scores! However, I was only able to hit 4mbs down and .645 up on the same phone. My bionic in the same location hit 16 down and 5 up.
Latest word on PhoneArena:
Vigor release: 10/20
Prime release:11/3.
Take it with a grain of salt, but that's the latest word.

T-Mobile Jump: All Hype

Last time I was in the T-Mobile store, the clerk told me about their "Jump" program. It sounded great: You give them your old phone, they give you a new one, your monthly payments stay the same. No brainer. Go for it.
Something, however, didn't feel right. I went over the words again in my mind. You give them your old phone, they give you a new one, your monthly payments stay the same. What could possibly be wrong with that?
I took it apart:
1) You give them your old phone.
No problem. It's old. I want a new one.
2) They give you a new one.
Trade in your old, obsolete phone for a band new, cutting edge device. Cool.
3) Your monthly payments stay the same.
Paying the exact same amount for a brand new phone as what I was paying for my old phone. I can afford that.
Sound too good to be true?
It is.
When you do the math, it becomes obvious that when you jump, you lose money.
Think about "You give them your old phone". Notice the word "give". That means you get nothing in return. You may be thinking, "No, I AM getting something in return - a band new phone!
Wrong. T-Mobile makes it seem like it's all one big happy transaction. The Jump, however, actually consists of two separate transactions: giving them your old phone, and, getting a new phone.
1) Giving them your old phone
T-Mobile makes you think that when you give them your old phone, you get a new one in return. It sounds great because we think that the value of the old phone necessarily is less than that of the new phone. You say to yourself, Wow! I can't believe they're doing that! Well, they're not.
You have been paying off the old phone for quite a while, and have built up "equity" of a few hundred dollars, which is the basis for the true value of the old phone. When you jump, you give T-Mobile those hundreds of dollars as a gift. It seems like you get back the amount still left on the loan because T-Mobile "pays" it for you. That amount is always smaller than what you've already paid. It has to be, otherwise, T-Mobile wouldn't pay it. They make sure that they never lose money on the deal in two ways. 1) THEY tell YOU how much your old phone is worth, and, 2) You can jump only every six months (after which the amount you've paid on the loan exceeds what's left).
Now, what is the value of their payment of the balance of the old phone? Zero. When you give them the phone, you no longer owe the balance. You don't have the phone any more, they do. If you were to continue paying the loan off, you would be building up T-Mobile's equity rather than your own.
What is really happening is the following:
- You pay full price for your old phone, and then you give it away for nothing.
2) Getting a new phone
When T-Mobile says, "You get a brand new phone but the payments stay the same", they are drawing your attention away from the fact that when you jump, you take out a loan on the new phone for its full price. The payments don't "stay the same". The same as what? The loan you had on the old phone, which, as we've seen, is a separate transaction. So, the fact that the payments "stay the same" doesn't put a dime in your pocket. Ironically, you are the one ensuring that the payments stay the same by putting down a couple of hundred dollars. Oh, wait a minute, I forgot something. T-Mobile charges $10/mo to jump. So the payments actually increase.
What is really happening is the following:
- You pay full price for the new phone, and pay T-Mobile $10/mo for the privilege.
I didn't jump.
From my understanding if you owe money on the 6 month or less "old phone" then it is paid off. If you don't owe money on the "old phone" you get the trade in value of the phone. Which is what you would get anyways. And for someone who likes to switch there phone up every 3 or so months when a new "interesting" phone comes out, its a pretty good thing....

You're wrong on the "Jump every six months part". You initially wait 6 months after signing up to be able to use Jump, after that you can get two new devices within twelve months with no wait time in between. I verified that with three T-Mobile reps. Say I buy the Nexus 5 this week (which I am) and the Galaxy S5 comes out next month and I want that.. Guess what? I can go trade my device in for that S5. But then I'm out of upgrades for almost a year..
jump program from what i was also told is that it comes with warranty, so if i lost my phone or what not, it will be covered.....
Dude the $10 replaces your old php/ warranty which could be higher . so no its not a separate charge. I was paying 15 for insurance/ warranty and when I registered for jump it REPLACED that charge for $10. So I saved $5 a month. Also when you trade in your old phone any balance left is paid off and yes you are technically leasing a phone but you don't have to JUMP every six months. It actually works out better than their previous plan. I have two separate payment plans before jump because I didn't realize they were actually starting a new credit line for every phone you financed. I thought it was adding to the total. This plan leaves you with one balance to pay and not multiple.

Sorry that's not how it works either. If you buy your nexus device with jump you have to wait six months in between for the twice a year upgrade. I've also been told this by a few reps. I'd like to know the specifoc s of this.

That's very possible for it to be that case. But for me to be misquoted by three reps is pretty bad on T-Mobile's part. The last time I called was to verify my Jump Upgrade date last week and the guy went through all the specifics of the program and said after you wait the initial 6 months, after that you can upgrade two times in one year regardless of the time between the upgrades. But I just like the fact that I can upgrade two times in one year and have it added to monthly bill.
Well, it sounds like if you consistently jump you're basically leasing your phones...
Pay monthly for it, JUMP to a new one, and continue paying. Might be okay for some people, might not. Really depends on how often you upgrade and whether or not you really need to. I love having the latest stuff, but the Nexus 5 seems to satisfy me in every way possible. Don't know how it could get much better right now (camera, MAYBE - I never really take pictures anyway), so I may end up keeping this phone past my typical year of owning a device.
I haven't paid insurance on my devices in quite some time. Waste of money for me considering how cheap the Nexus line is nowadays, plus I've never broke, damaged, or lost a phone in the past 10 years. Wouldn't really like paying the $10/mo, plus the new phone payments, even with a value plan.

This is correct. When you first sign up with jump you have to wait six months to"jump". After that you can jump twice a year whenever you want, you can jump twice in one week but then have to wait another year to do it again. There are pros and cons to this plan and depends on the person to decide if it is useful to them. Remember OP just like flashing it's your choice, don't try to blame T-Mobile for a choice that you make.

Let me break it down for you a bit:
Person 1 buys an HTC One at full price through T-Mobile at $600 (price when I purchased mine) no JUMP.
Person 2 buys the same HTC One for $0 down with payments equalling $25 beginning in Month #2 with $10 per month for JUMP.
Both parties pay the tax for the full price of the device so that's a mute point.
6 months down the road (when you are JUMP eligible for the first time) you trade in the HTC One for a Nexus 5.
Person 1 sells the HTC One for $369 (the current avg selling price according to Swappa.com) and buys a Nexus 5 from Google for $350 (again we ignore tax) making the total outlay:
0-600+369-350 = -$581
Person 2 walks into T-Mobile and trades the HTC One in and walks out the door with a new Nexus 5 for $0 down and $16.50 per month. Saving $8.50 per month from the HTC One. Total outlay:
0-150(payments of $25 x 6) - 60 = -$205
Let's also mention that JUMP gives you the insurance as well.
With the cost of mobile devices depreciating head over heels it makes no sense to purchase your devices outright if you plan on upgrading on any sort of routine. The equity drops too fast, almost 40% in 6 months. T-Mobile will make its money in 2 places:
1- people who dont want to upgrade
2- people who put money down on their device due to bad credit or when a 0 down deal isn't running
Also its a 1 time 6-month buffer period until you can use JUMP. After that point you may use it 2 times per 12 month period starting with your first JUMP date

Depends on the area for sure. I'm in the Lakeland area (between Tampa and Orlando FL) and I've had LTE for a long time now and Verizon can't match it. T-Mobile has really taken off within the past 3 years

No problem, just trying to clarify it... The key is to only JUMP when they do the $0 down deals which is quite often.

I think it's a worthy mention that person 2 still owes the price of nexus 5.... so it be 396 + 205 if he doesn't upgrade again. He can jump to avoid paying the debt of the current phone, but eventually he'll be paying full price for a phone.
Person 1 can upgrade as soon as the new hot phone comes out. Person 2 has to wait for 0 down promotion or suffer a loss.

Yeah, you're exactly right, the $396 loss becomes obscured in the verbiage.
I prefer to just stick to buying my phones off-contract. With the Nexus line being so great at such an amazing price, it seems way better than perpetually paying $20+ a month to basically rent a phone.
Not to mention that pre-paid prices are *so* much better. Like, half the price better. And if you want insurance, you can always get it through one of the many phone insurance companies by yourself for cheaper.
